So it looks like "reverse stings" are legal, but the buyers can get away with it with a pretty lame excuse (the lawyer argued that since the police never intended for the buyers to get away, they were never in possession).

http://www.kpho.com/story/22102426/police-reverse-sting-operations-under-scrutiny-by-az-supreme-court

Also, I know in the state of Maryland and I think Virginia as well, the cops will not sell real drugs. Because buying fake drugs with the intent to distribute as if they were real is illegal, they do this instead.

Finally, trying to sell drugs through an anonymous market would be pointless, as they can't prove that it was the recipient of the package who placed the order. Plus, it seems counterintuitive to distribute drugs to stop distributors...

Happens to all of us. Who wants to read a wall of text in a sea of useless data...infact, who reads anymore? A picture is worth a thousand words.

It is the second line of the terms of use. You would have to be looking away from your computer in order to not see it.

I don't think I've ever read a TOS.

I don't usually, but come on... This is the big and scary TOS:

Quote
RESTRICTIONS FOR NEW MEMBERS

After registering, you will be unable to post in any section except "newbies" until you have spent some time on the forum and have published a few posts.

If you are registering to ask a question, please ask it in the newbies section. Do not wait to ask it just because you must post it in "newbies": the question is very likely to have already been asked. If you don't end up getting good responses, you can ask it again elsewhere after you are established, or you can move the entire topic.

If you are commenting on Bitcoin, use your newbie wait time to read more about Bitcoin. If you are criticizing Bitcoin, find similar criticism using the search tool to see which points have already been covered. A good use of your newbie wait time is reading Satoshi's old posts.

Thailand’s fundamental basis of law is quite different – in Thailand, every act is ILLEGAL, unless there is a law (and process, and procedure) to make it legal.

Is this true? Who has the time to make all of the laws?

If it is true, then wouldn't selling any new product be illegal, since there are no laws regulating that new product?
524  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BTC Inflation? on: July 29, 2013, 05:10:09 PM
If bitcoins are unregulated, this means that bitcoins are constantly circulating right?  It's not like government money that is constantly tossed while new crisp bills are being made.  Eventually this means that there will be so many bitcoins as they get mined that a single bitcoin will have nearly no value, right?  Or am I missing something?

You're missing the cap of 21 million. Eventually 1 BTC will be worth thousands if not millions of dollars. When the cap is reached most transactions are going to be in very small fractions. This is assuming that it continues to grow and expand, however. Also, while bitcoins are continuously mined, it gets harder and harder to mine as time goes on, leading to them being distributed slower and slower until the 21 million mark is reached. Because of this, bitcoins should be heavily deflated by the end as opposed to inflated.

Good. I always liked Bitstamp more than Gox.

This article is very interesting. In particular, the small section about the site "Atlantis" peaked my interest. Could it really be the police? Are the police allowed to sell drugs? I thought that they could only pretend to be interested in buying them in order to catch dealers.

At least in the US the courts have found that the police can use deception, lies, trickery, etc to catch criminals.  Undercover police officers pose as prostitutes so posing as a drug dealer wouldn't be materially different.

It is true that they can use deception, but I was under the impression that they could not actually sell drugs, because if they did they would be committing a worse crime than what they're trying to stop. It's counter-intuitive. They can pose as prostitutes, but they can't have sex with the client. The cop can't say "Hello I am a prostitute pay me money for sex", they have to stand around looking whorish and hope that someone tries to solicit them. Similarly, I can't see how Atlantis could be cops. They can't offer (or ship) drugs and then arrest people- they would be guilty of drug trafficking, whereas the person they caught would technically be innocent of all crimes, since the police can't prove that it was that person who ordered the drugs.

Now what I could see is the police posing as buyers, getting drugs shipped and then tracking the package back to the source. They could potentially catch some people, but I doubt that sellers ship from the same town in which they live.

Why was this bumped? Clearly OP was wrong...

You are right, why have a clearly decent discussion when we can spend time being right!

What discussion is there to have, at least on this thread? Clearly there was no invasion, and I still think that there won't be. Why did you choose to necro it two years after it was started anyways? If you have new evidence, why bump this as opposed to making a new thread?
528  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why do most Bitcoiners seem intelligent? on: July 29, 2013, 04:38:14 PM
When I give a peek to 4chans /pol or reddit, facebook, twitter, pretty much any big community and/or social network people seem to be so ignorant and willing to voice their ignorance whereas in communities such as Bitcointalk (and a couple others which I shall not name) people are able to put together logical arguments, have discussions and view the current events without the glasses with a thick layer of crappy propaganda on them?

Seems that you rarely stumble upon ignorant fools on here.

The two main differences between Bitcointalk.org and facebook are:

1. Bitcoins take a little bit more technical know-how and effort to acquire, whereas anyone can sign up for facebook and use it to its full potential.
2. Bitcoins are money- by default people should be smarter when dealing with them than with facebook or twitter, where it doesn't matter how dumb you are. If you're stupid on facebook, oh well. If you're acting stupid with bitcoins, you lose money.

However, like others have said, Bitcoiners only seem to be more intelligent. People you agree with are going to seem smarter than they really are. There are a ton of conspiracy theorists on here. The average person may see everything through a "thick layer of crappy propaganda" but there are a lot of people on here who are just as bad, just in the opposite political spectrum.
529  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: 2013-07-29 Bitcoin Illegal in Thailand on: July 29, 2013, 04:27:34 PM
Theoretically, I could see the similarity between the commonly-used BTC and ฿ being the source of antifraud kinds of laws. On the other hand, I'd say someone who thought they were receiving ฿1000 and ended up with BTC1000 should keep their head down and enjoy their good fortune.

What is ฿, as opposed to BTC?

I haven't found a reliable source for this yet. Does anyone have one? And please don't link to reddit or another thread on here. If the reddit or bitcointalk thread has a source, I'd like that.

OP is the only source. And his link is to his own website.

That is why this should not be in the press section. OP is not in the media.

To be fair, when I googled "Bitcoin illegal in Thailand" a lot of sites came up saying that it was. But they were all small time and none looked reliable. I figure that if bitcoins were made illegal major news sites would be on top of it.

101 now on Mt. Gox. I'm hoping that it will stay there until I can buy some later in the week, and then start climbing up.

I'm on there having a hard time any advice?

What are you having trouble with? You can't buy the BTC directly. You buy SLL and then transfer SLL to BTC. But once the account is verified it only takes a few extra seconds to do so.

I wrote ~100 words to explain some points I saw on the "Yes" side.

It hasn't gone through and isn't even counted to the "No" Side. This site is a scam  Angry

No way I will try again, it took enough of my time on the first try.

Also, a site where every single point is reviewed by a Mod with his own opinion before it gets even posted is hardly a debate.

Sorry for the double post, but if you make an account the comment is posted instantly. The site's not a scam.

Yes, I think that Bitcoin is a scam and makes people believe that they are receiving free money.

Yes, when I pay $100 for 1 bitcoin I believe that I'm getting free money  Roll Eyes

Just put your computer to work on its own in order to make easy money for you.

It seems as though people have mining confused with bitcoins.

There is no supporting, stable (= governmental) infrastructure.

This is backed by nothing, but "faith".

There is a community supporting its value, which is much better than a single government. The Weimar Republic, Zimbabwe, and Cyprus would like a word with you...

Also, all currencies are backed by faith. Paper money is worth only as much as people believe it is.

Overall, it seems as though the people arguing "yes" have no idea what they're talking about. The only valid point I saw was that it fluctuates too often to be used as a normal currency (but that was in the No section for some reason). But as more bitcoins are added, and are distributed into the hands of more people, mass purchases and sells will have less effect, so I can see stability in the future. I'll definitely vote "No" and write up a good argument, however I fail to see how Bitcoin can possibly be a "scam", seeing as there's no central authority to profit off of its success...

I need a easy location, to either use debit card of cash deposit thanks.

VirWoX accepts debit cards through moneybookers. It takes 2-3 days for your account to be verified after your first purchase, but after that all transactions are instant.
