521  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Lump vs DCA with real data on: September 09, 2023, 06:35:51 AM
From your data, it is clear that lump sum investments outperformed DCA's strategy.

Both strategies have their upside and downside, and they both need specific scenarios to outperform each other. If an asset has the potential to rise constantly in the long term, then a lump sum investment will give a big return, but the investor needs to have a reasonable amount of funds upfront. But if the market is volatile and it runs like waves, then DCA will help an investor reduce the impact of the volatile market in his portfolio. In general terms, lump sum investment seems to better-performing strategy, but if the price of that asset goes down and stays there for a very long time, then it will be a big loss for the investor.

There are some downsides that i noticed with these strategies.

1. They are both extremely good, but a more dynamic approach can give investors better ROI. Without buying everything in one shot, you can make a lump sum investment in every notable dip. This might provide a better yield.

2. Buying small amounts every month seems like a better choice in a volatile market condition, but frequent buying activity might charge significant fees over time. I think these fees were ignored in the calculation.

In my opinion, why sticking to one strategy when we can make a combination of both and create a better one according to market conditions. For example, we can lump sum in a notable price dip and perform DCA when the market moves sideways. This gives our strategy more flexibility. Also, making some tweaks to our strategy in different market conditions is a good practice as an investor.
522  Other / Meta / Re: Remove Proxyban (evil fees) - get whitelisted for free on: September 08, 2023, 06:44:10 PM
Complete KYC. If they comply, they are still banned and the evil fee doubles as punishment. Tongue

Pay the evil fee to an escrow, and if they are not banned in their first 30 days/after their first 100 posts/whatever, the payment is returned. Bonus points for doing so over Lightning to keep fees low.

The problem is that unless it is someone I knew from outside the forum (and no one I know outside the forum knows my forum handle), then it is near impossible to differentiate between a user who has previously been banned and someone who has just been unlucky with their IP address/is using Tor. Perhaps if the person could prove ownership of a Reddit account, Twitter account, or similar, which is in good standing and has displayed good technical knowledge, but such users would be incredibly rare and even then it isn't a guarantee.

Then we can put a user from a suspicious IP address in a testing mode. They will only be able to visit certain sections of the forum and make comments. Their exploration into the forum will be limited though they can read everything. If they prove that they have a mindful knowledge then they will get full access to the forum. Not sure if this method will be practical or not, perhaps this will be much more of an annoyance than its importance.
523  Other / Meta / Re: A concise 2FA/TOTP implementation (SMF patch) on: September 08, 2023, 06:27:02 PM
Your efforts and dedication to this forum motivate me to contribute more to the forum. There is no doubt adding 2FA security measures will add an extra layer of protection for the forum members and eliminate potential threats from scammers and hackers.

Also, i love the idea of giving theymos a set of 2FA primitives which will give him more room to implement the features according to forum needs. If theymos approve the idea and implement it into the forum then i think adding a guide for users who is unfamiliar with this concept will encourage users to use these features to make their account more secure.
524  Other / Meta / Re: Simplified view of bitcointalk. on: September 08, 2023, 06:09:33 PM
What I think should even be of much concern about this forum should be to strengthen its security and safety architecture by enabling 2FA and other stuff that will make account hacks a near impossibility.
It's on going with a SMF patch A concise 2FA/TOTP implementation. It is waiting for approval from theymos as I did not see any confirmation that theymos already approved it.

Some sneak peaks from PowerGlove.
The password reset screen used to look like this:

Now, it looks like this:

The first time it's likely to be encountered is here:

There's a tooltip on the "OTP" field that looks like this:

by enabling 2FA and other stuff that will make account hacks a near impossibility.
People still lose their exchange accounts with 2FA so with 2FA, your account can be hacked, it is not nearly impossible.

These look good. Actually few days ago I asked the same question in the forum whether we should have a 2FA option or not. Many agree with me and if i can use my Google Auth app to log into my account then i will feel more secure that no one will be able to gain access to my account even if they somehow manage to guess my password. I hope these security features will be implemented soon.
525  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Circulation review on: September 08, 2023, 05:29:48 PM
Those bitcoins will never be accessible again. They just simply out of circulation forever. it's a very small percentage compared to the actual Bitcoin market cap. TBH if you have a few million dollars in somewhere then you will probably make a backup plan so that if something happens to you, your family members can get that. Most of the bitcoin that is out of circulation forever because of some unexpected incident happened when the price of bitcoin was very cheap so no one cared at that time.
526  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How are we going to beat the reptilians when monkeys are kicking our ass? on: September 08, 2023, 05:22:00 PM
Your observation is pretty straightforward. The development of Bitcoin and its ecosystem was fast compared to other technological developments. Many think that bitcoin will change the global economic standard but they also think that this journey will not be unchallenging. Now we can see that this is true. If bitcoin can not face challenges like 'mempool congestion', 'spam' attack then how it will face the demand as a global currency?

Fee structures, the cost of running a node and its practicality, utility of lightning networks are some critical sector that needs a proper solution. Also, the rise of Dogecoin shows in the future bitcoin will not be the only player in the game when this sector is continuously evolving. Your insight into this current scenario is the bitter reality.
527  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why newbie may find it difficult to rank up in this forum on: September 07, 2023, 07:46:40 PM
👉👉Not ready to learn
👉👉To busy to read

These are the two main points why some members never rank up in the forum. It's true that it is not easy to make forum-standard posts at the beginning of a member's journey. But consistency and patience to do a lot of reading increase their post standard over time. Many of them came here with a mindset to earn money by doing campaigns when very few try to learn from their mistakes and follow higher-ranking members.
528  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Unfortunately, this problem is increasing yearly on: September 07, 2023, 07:38:55 PM
Someone from inside doing these. What are the points of using SMS verification for security purposes if that telecom company doesn't want to enhance its security measures? They need to identify these people who are bypassing the security and letting those scammers get account-to-user accounts.

I personally use Google auth and Authy for one-time passwords. Here is some hardware and app-based one-time password option that can be used instead of using your phone numbers.

531  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Don't look for investment, just hodle! on: September 06, 2023, 05:56:12 PM
Reason why many fail for scam is because they are looking for investment instead of just holding Bitcoin and wait for it value to appreciate organically

Great! But how someone will hold Bitcoin if they do not make their investment into Bitcoin first? If you are referring to investing in altcoin then i think you should revise your investment strategy again. I know we have a lot of bitcoin maximalists in here but there are people who like to take risks in altcoin. We have seen in every bull cycle project like polygon, solana, Shiba inu emerge and the investor makes a huge profit. Everyone wants that kind of gain. So if a very small portion of my portfolio is in altcoin I wouldn't mind.
532  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why is KYC mandatory in CEX? on: September 06, 2023, 05:49:51 PM
I think government want to reduce the use of cryptocurrency for illegal transaction so government want to increase it trace ability. honestly I am okay with KYC as long as they only use it prevent criminal activity. but I am afraid that government do abuse of power by force the citizens to pay tax or pay anything to increase country revenue which they will corrupt it. honestly I think the taxation system in my country is unhealthy and weighing the citizen, in my opinion those people who work in that related institution are too slick. I hope there are more wise, good and honest people who manage my country in the future and replace the bad people. I hope for the better in 2024.

Governments are concerned about illegal activities through cryptocurrencies. And they think that most of this activity is done through cex like Binance. They have a large user base and their P2P system is widely used all over the world. SEC is targeting these exchanges by saying they are involved with these types of activity. So they do not have any other option but to force their user to do KYC. If someone is not doing anything illegal they shouldn't be afraid of it or if someone thinks they should not share their identity then dex or P2P is the best option.
533  Other / Meta / Re: censoring foul words. on: September 06, 2023, 05:39:58 PM
According to loyceV “If you can be offended by someone online, it means you’re doing something wrong”.

I actually don’t see any need why the forum should start censoring post just because they included a curse word in it, if you don’t like the way an user responded to your post the best thing you can do is to ignore them and forget something ever happened rather than to start engaging in a heated argument with both of you insulting yourself, after all you don’t know them and they don’t know you, so don’t let anyone’s words get to your head.

Don’t forget that this is a forum and everyone should be able to give his or her own opinion without being censored. And once the content of user get removed because of their choice of words then that would defeat the whole idea of “freedom of speech”.

Some people practice such rush behavior that they easily get offended and attack others with bad words. I do not think there is anything we can do about it. Sometimes a word serves different meanings depending on which region of the globe that word is being used. One community slung can be one community's general expression. If the moderator starts censoring every foul word they they won't get the time to do other important work.
534  Other / Meta / Re: Is Bitcoin Forum a user? on: September 06, 2023, 05:30:32 PM
I think this is a default account for the forum that has been used to send automated replies. I have noticed that when the moderator deleted my post it's written there that "A reply of yours, quoted below, was deleted by a Bitcoin Forum moderator". But i am not sure why this account is on the merit list. That account should not be able to send merits if someone has done it. It's also possible that was a real account but it was deleted by the moderator. That user data doesn't exist in the database anymore that's why it's showing Bitcoin Forum.
535  Other / Meta / Re: Trust Flags!!! on: September 06, 2023, 08:42:45 AM
Have been wondering about this trust flag, trust issues or whatever is called...
Have been seeing so many accounts with numbers written on that trust position, some are of good (like the first one =) but my main concern is the one with (-).
An account with, let me say (-9) for instance, how can that be removed?
Does it mean that it will be like a scar on those affected account forever?
Is there no panel that someone with that kind of negative number (negative trust) such as (-9) go to, like to appeal for it to be removed?
If there's, how long will it take to be approved?

I need answers...

This trust system makes this forum environment feel decentralized. The trust system is not moderated so anyone can give you a negative or positive trust but a trust rating from DT members matters. It's not like a centralized authority where the leader selects whom to trust and others follow his commands. I saw DT members arguing with each other on different topics. So if a DT member puts a negative trust rating with inequity then sometimes other DT members talk against it. So they always try to be careful when putting a trust rating on someone.
536  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which is safest wallet for bitcoin long term holding? on: September 06, 2023, 08:33:44 AM
Hello guys with several wallets out there, I want to be sure make the right choice, because I have seen posts were members of this forum are complaining about some wallets and exchanges because of their unprofessional behavior.
So my question is, apart from electrum wallet which other wallet is the safest for long term holding of bitcoin?.

A hardware wallet is the safest one.

With the current reduction of price in Bitcoin, is it the best time to buy bitcoin or should I still wait for the dip?.
Though I have seen some post talking about "buy now or wait for the dip" but the debating answers got me confused, so I need the final clarity from you guys.

If you want to wait for the dip then you will never buy Bitcoin. There is no bottom so no matter how dip the price of bitcoin goes some people will never be satisfied and will tell you the price will drop more. If you think the price will go down then buy in parts. If the price further crashes you will DCA to lower your average. This is the safest and most proven method I know of investing in Bitcoin.
537  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Share Your Bitcoin Hack Stories: Help Us Educate and Protect! on: September 05, 2023, 07:44:33 PM
luckily I have never been hacked before. But I was scammed once and prevented several attempts but none of them was with my bitcoin. I can share with you those stories.

Scammed: I was trying to participate in a token sale on a platform called Balancer. The scammer put an identical link to the main one.

1st scam attempted: One scammer offered me a job and wanted to take an interview. After the interview he wanted me to fill up a contract form that contained malware that would help him to take control of my computer.

2nd scam attempted: Another scammer pretended to be a game developer and wanted me to test his game. I was smart enough to use a sandbox to run his application which was malware as well.

There were a few more but I can not remember them well.
I have never been hacked but I am interested in responding to your post because it seems that you are experiencing the same scammed from the 3 cases described, you may not validate and check every site so you are very vulnerable to experiencing the same fraud cases from phishing and malware. We must increase extra security to protect important data stored on computers, make sure you know how to protect your computer from anything related to hacking and scam, because data related to private keys or phrases is very sensitive if you do not protect the security on your computer , another anticipatory step is to move important data to the hard disk and compress the data into a zip file with password protection.

Now all these scam attempts make me skeptical about every link shared with me by a stranger. I always tried to be cautious so that scammer wouldn't be able to get anything from me. I got a lot of messages in telegram and discord from strangers with some imaginary and lucrative rewards but they ended up being on my block list. That is why I stopped doing airdrops when some of my friends earned a good amount of money from them.

539  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bitfinex holds bitcoin on its balance sheet on: September 04, 2023, 07:45:06 PM
We know that very well tether is a ticking bomb. It will put a big hole into the whole industry and it will be bigger than Luna, UST, and FTX combined. Keeping part of their earning in Bitcoin is a good move by them. Most of the exchanges do it I think. Big exchanges keep their holding in bitcoin not only for investment purposes but also to manipulate the market. Most of the manipulating happens in bitcoin market done by these big exchanges and whales.

I think binance is holding more bitcoin that bitfinex because of its size.
You are totally right Binance has the most BTC in holding and Bitfinex is at second number. And you are also right about tether which is a sister firm of Bitfinex. And to be really honest I did not have that idea before but now while I Have the idea I think it is also not good for Bitfinex too. As after reading some of the articles both brother and sister firms are accused and blamed by many news medias that they are sharing funds to back each other up.

To be honest, these holdings of exchanges in BTC are not that much in compare to the total market cap of the BTC so I do not really think these volumes could really have enough potential to create manipulation but of course there are many other factors also included that plays important role in manipulation of market and these 3 exchanges could play an important role there specially Binance.

Yeah, we have seen how one company can impact another. Alameda research and FTX is a good example of it. If somehow tether go down in the future bitfinex will try to save it in any mean or their financial connection can cash destruction for both company. What I am concerned about is tether's market cap. When every other stablecoin's market cap is going down tether is going up. There is something that is not right about tether. Also, it's based in Singapore, and the SEC already mentioned that a foreign entity can not issue USD-pegged stablecoin. So they will have a hard time operating in the USA.

540  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Atlantis conference in Madeira Island on: September 04, 2023, 06:39:43 PM

Michael Saylor, Jack Dorsey are really going to attend the events?

42 euro for an event is not bad. Who are the organizers? I have just checked it seems legit to me.
I also checked the website and I can see that Jack Dorsey is amongst the speakers according to the site although I would need further prove like some information on this even from Jack Dorsey social media platforms.

It's easy to just throw in public figures name into an even to gain attention and yes the fee if legit isn't too much although there are more popular crypto-currency figures that would impact more knowledge than those mentioned on their list

You are right. That is why I was asking about the organizer's name. Maybe we can verify on their social media. Some well-known organizers can organize events like this so it should not be hard to check their authenticity. I saw some of the speakers wearing t-shirts with their logo on them on their social media. But the place is in a remote location and hard for someone like me to attend.
