521  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: List of CPU Friendly AltCoins on: April 09, 2014, 06:13:49 PM
A couple days Hashcoin (HASH) was launched. It is very similar to Darkcoin (X11 and DGW). It is already in a few exchanges (none of the big ones though: Exarena, Swaphole and Europex, that I know). I cpu mined a bit in the beginning with the same settings I use for DRK or HIRO, so I guess it belongs in the list. This is the ANN thread:

522  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What qualities would a new coin need to not be considered a scam on: April 09, 2014, 09:35:35 AM
I think we should reserve the term scam to those who actually lie to deceive people to give them something and then don't deliver. A bad coin is not a scam, it is just a bad coin.
523  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Golden rules for newbies pt. 1: “Investing” in cryptocurrencies on: April 09, 2014, 09:31:54 AM
If we don't get involved and don't get the currency adopted then we are just playing with tulips. Money is worth something because it can be used. It doesn't matter how advanced the algorithm is if nobody will accept your coins.

haven't read the article. but the hope for cryptos is that we all use the most advanced coin...

the problem is, that doesn't always happen. VHS vs Betamax is a good example. VHS was more popular, but Betamax would have been much better and more usable.

That is true. I didn't want to diminish the importance of the coin being technologically advanced, I was just pointing that the other part is also necessary. In fact I think that the other part is more difficult to achieve because you need more people and assets that are not always under your control (public opinion, regulation, news, merchants...).

BTW, fully agree about video, VHS sucked!

If they attempt to search your laptop and find that the whole drive is encrypted... they will ruin your trip to America, especially if you refuse to provide the password.

I think that it would be smarter to leave your bitcoins at home and uninstall all bitcoin software from your computer.

I agree, encryption is a red flag for law enforcement always. I don't share the view, but it can give you a lot of trouble. Having said that, Truecrypt is great.

However, I don't see the need to uninstall bitcoin software. Bitcoin is widely accepted and it is no crime to have them. My concern would be security, but apart from that I see no reason. In fact, with the recent IRS ruling that bitcoin is property and not currency, I understand there is no risk of being accused of introducing more money that the declared amount.

526  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Besides Doge, who are the 3 top Alt coins? on: April 08, 2014, 05:52:36 PM
Truth is, none of us know everything about every coin. There are so much that it is impossible to keep up. We have our favourites depending on when we entered the market and our personal circumstances. That usually led to investments and then we all defend those we are invested in, sometimes forgetting about other coins and their development.

My choices would be Darkcoin, Vertcoin and Mintcoin, but there are many more that are really interesting. Whatever you chose, you'll leave out great options.
527  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Question about customs and taxes for BTC. on: April 08, 2014, 05:07:13 PM
They CAN search into your laptop but I've never seen them do it. I've traveled to the US around 30 times in the last 3-4 years, always with a laptop, and I have never been searched. Nor I have heard of it happening outside of the news. Most laptop searches are related with child pornography, not with Bitcoin.

Anyway, if you are going to be travelling with your laptop maybe it would be a good idea to not carry all your BTC always with you. I assume you have the wallet encrypted and backed up, but still I don't see the need Smiley

Darkcoin was instamine and people are buying it.

Completely true, but it is also true that is the biggest shadow it has around. I'm quite into Darkcoin and I'm not more invested into it because of that.
529  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What qualities would a new coin need to not be considered a scam on: April 08, 2014, 12:16:54 PM
A coin is a scam if the main reason the coin exist is to enrich a very few people (devs/early adopters) at the cost of the majority who buy useless (and in reality worhtless coins) because they believe they have value.

Money is a fiction by itself. It has value because we decide it has value. This is just the same.

Adding exchanges so soon isn't important. Nobody knows the coin, so there will be no buy orders. The people hanging around this thread are either mining or criticizing, but the coin is unknown to potential buyers.

I think you can use sg-miner for graphics cards. downloading and testing now

I'm also trying but it says I need to specify at least one pool server.

The cpu miner says HTTP request failed: Failed connect to 127.0.0.1:9332; No error

Downloaded wallet but I get 0 active connections to hashcoin network. I already have the line you suggest in hashcoin.conf.

Aditionally to the wallet, how can this coin be mined?
533  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [CONTEST] Win .5 BTC (IPO) by suggest us a good coin name for the Munich Project on: April 07, 2014, 05:00:37 PM
Pancoin

Pan means all in greek. Munich project learns from all the previous coins to make a better one, so it could be said that it add them all.

535  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 05, 2014, 05:44:25 PM
Those that want anonymity for nefarious reasons will still use the coin. They will give a price boost to darkcoin when darksend is ready. But they are not the target audience, IMO.

I'm a broken record here, but IMO they might not be the target audience, but they will be the ones who have the ability to increase price based on adoption.

Really then please explain who is the target audience and what is the target use? "People concerned about privacy". What does this mean? How will the coin be used in "private" on a large scale? Those who wish DRK adoption to the general public, that's all fine and good but DRK's main selling point doesn't matter to the majority of potential users.

I use Bitcoin for 3 purposes: 1. Hold for future appreciation, 2. Redeem for fiat, 3. Buy non-illegal stuff online (TigerDirect, etc.).

So what do i care about being private? For #3. I HAVE TO GIVE SHIPPING INFO. I think i'm generally in the mainstream when it comes to crypto, i use it, i invest in it, i believe in it, but I don't care about being anonymous.

I'm not trying to be a smart-ass, but please, give me some idea of what non-illegal transactions that it would be imperative to use DRK (and primarily DRK) for?

I just think it's naive to think that DRK can somehow gain mass appeal without -first- being adopted by those who want to buy their pot.

If you don't see how darksend can benefit the general public, you won't have any problems posting a history of all transactions from your current bank account, or all bank accounts you have ever had for that matter. Sure, bitcoin addresses do not necessarily have a direct link to any individual or organisation, but in many cases it would be easy enough to establish the owner of the wallet, especially if the information is posted in a public forum. If somebody has your address they can see all transfers in the blockchain and may be able to establish who you have done business with. If legitimate businesses accept bitcoin a lot of them would probably want to keep the same address, so payments aren't sent to the wrong address, causing problems with their clients. In many cases it might not be important but many people are not such exhibitionists that they wish for their finances to be public information.

+1

If we are in a buy / sell transaction, and I can see your purchase history and how much you have, I can gain an advantage over negotiations.

There are thousands of reasons why financial privacy is essential.

Again, this is not really giving me anything other than the "privacy" issue. In the current state of crypto, even Bitcoin can be considered a niche financial tool with limited acceptance (outside of the "crypto community").

In terms of mass-adoption, what do you need? Demand. What causes demand? The ability to use it to purchase services/goods or a likelyhood of appreciation.

I'm looking for scenarios on the demand side. I'm not discounting the end-goal of more privacy, I don't discount this is a good thing. My point above was to address the people who constantly harp on the "evil" side of things (drug deals, etc.). The privacy thing is great, but I don't think this is the reason BTC doesn't have wider acceptance (knowing that we're still in the infancy).

The point is I still think it's naive to think the privacy thing is enough to put DRK over the top while trying to avoid potential "bad transactions", because there simply aren't enough "good transactions" in the world of crypto.

You are right when you say the privacy feature is not enough to be the only coin, but it is definitely more than what most crypto coins have. We are in the infancy of crypto coins. Way too many exist right now. Demand will build up slowly and the few that survive will get the big pot. I believe Darkcoin will be one of them, but it will not be alone for sure.
536  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XPM] Pool mining primecoin using DigitalOcean (VPS) on: April 05, 2014, 05:27:31 PM
So, buy some xpm if you want cause price will soon increase as we get rid of the botnets at last!

I know very little about Primecoin and I'm doing my research... why do you say that having/getting rid of botnets affects the price? I can understand that it may have some effect in the image of the coin, but I can't see why price should move a lot.
537  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What is your end game if BTC crashes overnight? on: April 05, 2014, 05:20:21 PM
I don't invest in BTC the money I need tomorrow and I don't look to the price too much. I believe in the premises behind BTC, so I believe that a complete crash is not likely.

Have fun and stop worrying.
538  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What currency CPU do you recommend? on: April 01, 2014, 04:19:32 PM
I'm into Darkcoin. I don't get a lot because it is already GPU mineable, but it is a coin I believe in. Price is quite stable right now, so you can make your numbers.
539  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: List of CPU-ONLY AltCoins on: April 01, 2014, 04:15:29 PM
Hi,
the groestlcoin (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=525926.660) may be also a coin worth to mine.
I've got an E5-1620 and I can mine at 1200 kh/s (~500 kh/s on hirocoin X11).
at this speed it seems to be more profitable (or less bad Tongue) than Hiro or Riecoin

That coin is GPU mineable since day 1. This list is intended for coins that are CPU only or were CPU only in the beginning.
540  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: Buying 10 Darkcoin for $4 USD on: April 01, 2014, 03:45:10 PM
Buying 10 Darkcoin for $4 USD through paypal.

Escrow is welcome and can be used.

I will prntsceen the messages on here showing that I am paying the 4 usd for 10 Darkcoin, so a chargeback on Paypal will fail, though I will never do one anyway.. only 4 usd man.. Tongue

1 Darkcoin = 0.6 USD, so I'm paying a little above.

You are not paying above, you are paying way below! if 1 drk = 0.6 usd (in fact right not it is around 0.7), then 10 drk would be 6 usd, not 4. And you are trying to buy off an exchange and with paypal, so you should offer a premium.
