5261  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why doesn't c-lightning connect you to a list of peers by default? on: March 11, 2022, 12:08:20 PM
According to BOLT 7, Lightning doesn't rely on third parties to disseminate the peer list. So, it either contains IP addresses of several nodes, which doesn't seem to be the case, or you don't know any node on startup, but get the IP addresses the moment it connects to one node. (That'll then send their peer list etc.)
5262  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Consensus that rewards proof of mining efficiency on: March 11, 2022, 11:47:50 AM
From Bitcoin network security, i don't see any benefit.
Since they've mentioned the PoW regulation in the first post, I guess the benefit goes either to the environment or to the holders' pockets. (Due to the rise in demand, which happens due to a nation's approval)
5263  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Alternative way to set up full node without downloading the full blockchain? on: March 11, 2022, 08:52:36 AM
you do realise the network structure is far different now, compared to how it was in 2011.. right?
With computational effort, I refer to mining.

The difficulty has increased from few terahashes per second to hundreds of exahashes per second. It's much harder to gain the required computational power to accomplish a sybil attack without looking suspicious to your victims. Just having the IP addresses and the computers that are running a Bitcoin client isn't going to harm anyone.

Newbies' first step should be to actually learn what the hell they're buying.
5265  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Alternative way to set up full node without downloading the full blockchain? on: March 11, 2022, 07:28:11 AM
The most famous example I can think of is the Genesis block's address balance where majority of block explorers are showing the wrong balance.
What's the genesis block's address' balance is debatable. It's 68 BTC whereas 50 of those are unspendable. There are other unspendable outputs as well, such as those with OP_RETURN or those which had "0x14" replaced with "0x00" and are provably gone. Shouldn't it show there's a balance?

But, thanks for mentioning it.

[shitpost]
As always, franky pushes his own agenda and constantly twists my words. Sorry, but you don't get my attention.

You are trusting those 8 connecting nodes to not sybil you with a false chain.
A sybil attack requires computational effort besides full nodes left running. There was a thread made in 2011 regarding this[1]. By the same reasoning, I also trust a billionaire for not deciding to attack the network.

This is the last post, I shall make about this, because if you still can't comprehend it.
Well not really my problem.
And it has been repeatedly told you that you verify nothing when you visit a block explorer. Also, it's mentioned that you don't know their outbound connections, which is little significant due to the former.
5266  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Consensus that rewards proof of mining efficiency on: March 10, 2022, 07:38:15 PM
Wouldn’t it be more beneficial to reward them based on efficiency as it relates to computational power / energy consumption?
Again, it does. Efficiency is the work:energy ratio. A person who spends less energy than another, but generate the same number of hashes every second, gains a greater reward.

[...]
Sorry, but I lost you on the superblock header part. Can you describe how would this implementation make the system more efficient? Even if you changed some of the rules, as you say. Your phrasing is a little foggy.
5267  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Consensus that rewards proof of mining efficiency on: March 10, 2022, 06:55:32 PM
There's no need to change anything in the source code. Currently they are rewarded based on the efficiency of their mining rigs. The more efficient a machine is, the more hashes it can calculate at the given cost, therefore, the more money they earn.
5268  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Storing Cryptocurrency in Coinbase Vault Vs Hardware Wallet? on: March 10, 2022, 04:15:18 PM
People store their coins on exchanges and other third party services all the time, which is exactly the same thing.
It's not the same thing. I know few people who use Binance to trade shitcoins and few other who wanted to buy stuff with Bitcoin and used a similar exchange, but none who wants to keep their crypto in a vault they'll have no control upon, imagining they'll be safe there.

That's hilariously tragic.
5269  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Merit] [Faucet] Hey Bitcoiners! Wanna try out the lightning network? on: March 10, 2022, 03:19:44 PM
Bump. I've raised it to 3,000,000 sats as maximum.
5270  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What will happen to the Bitcoin network if Russia blocks access to the internet? on: March 10, 2022, 03:13:34 PM
Take a look on North Korea and their internet. It is limited, it is controlled (lol).
Their internet is highly censored. The pages you can visit are limited, let alone the services that accept Bitcoin. There is no reason for a totalitarian government, of that level, to get involved; they already control everything.

Even if I had high chances of getting away with it, I wouldn't even try, because there's a small chance I won't have a head afterwards.
5271  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Stable coin on BTC main chain on: March 10, 2022, 01:09:29 PM
For example IIRC Binance charges 10 USDT if you choose bitcoin chain and charges something like 0.1 if you use BinanceChain (since it is centralized they also don't need that many confirmation so the transfer is very fast too).
Not only for centralization, if you allow me. It's clearly for their benefits. They want you to stop using BTC/ALTs as this would push you onto their shit-chain. Therefore, the shit-chain's demand increases.

Also, I'm not quite sure, but they either charge large amounts so it can be confirmed instantly or you pay both Binance and the miners each time you make a transaction.
5272  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What will happen to the Bitcoin network if Russia blocks access to the internet? on: March 10, 2022, 12:54:20 PM
the title.. What will happen to the Bitcoin network if Russia blocks access to the internet? kinda gives away the scenario
No internet doesn't necessarily mean they'll restrict the internet usage. I understood that they would simply limit it to their country only.

I really think that the Russian government doesn't care about Bitcoin and it would ignore Bitcoin for sure.
That isn't true. The minister of finance is pushing forward the regulation of cryptocurrencies, in general. In fact, I think we're in a period when every government is going to introduce them in their economic mechanism sooner or later. EU has withdrawn every one of their bad intentions regarding PoW. Biden took a step towards on regulating cryptocurrencies recently.
5273  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Alternative way to set up bitcoin core without downloading the full blockchain? on: March 10, 2022, 12:40:17 PM
And I responded that 3 different block explorer would have 3x8 connections for a total of 24.
How can you be sure about that? You have to trust the block explorers while the technology promotes the opposite. By running your own node, you trust no one. Don't you like the maximum number of connections? Increase it, it's in the source code. Be your own block explorer.

The OP lost $80 on excess mobile data just from attempting sync
Because they're doing it wrong. No one should use their mobile data to sync the chain, for the same reason they shouldn't use them to download a 4k 3-hour movie from a pirate site; better just buy it, it'll come cheaper!
5274  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What will happen to the Bitcoin network if Russia blocks access to the internet? on: March 09, 2022, 09:23:43 PM
Ooh. No internet. Got it now... Excuse me, I thought we're talking about a scenario where the country is simply incapable of connecting outside. It's hard to imagine a world without internet.  Tongue
5275  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Storing Cryptocurrency in Coinbase Vault Vs Hardware Wallet? on: March 09, 2022, 09:12:17 PM
You do not have the ability to withdraw your coins without Coinbase's approval and cooperation.
This is unbelievable. Are there people who use it, for real? Can't they realize there's something really faulty with it?
5276  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What will happen to the Bitcoin network if Russia blocks access to the internet? on: March 09, 2022, 09:08:57 PM
having no internet means no fork, no different chain. it just means no competition from russia.
Cutting the internet connection doesn't take their computational resources. They can still use them to mine blocks, even if they had been using them to provide shares in a pool outside Russia.

there was no chain split when kazahkstan went dark last year. because no internet means NO INTERNET
I can think of many other reasons why they didn't split Bitcoin. One's that it makes consensus harder to be achieved. Another is that there wasn't enough demand for a fork to occur.
5277  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: C-Lightning-REST fails on start on: March 09, 2022, 08:26:29 PM
Are you sure that port 3003 is correct? You should set it to the same value as "rest-port" in your c-lightning config. Also, try removing "/v1" as it should not be necessary.
Apparently, it's not a port issue, but rather a web socket one.
