5261  Other / Meta / Re: Merit awarding as an alternative to posting. on: August 30, 2019, 04:21:43 PM
Likes and dislikes can often start flame wars.

This is my issue with stack. If you post something that's correct but the community hates it, you just end up with a load of downvotes (it shouldn't happen but it does - A LOT)...

Sometimes I just want a “Like” or “Agree” for that.

@jetty, does this come with stock smf (the out-of-the-box kind)? I saw it on fittotalk and a couple of your forums and I'm wondering if that's an extension or comes with smf?

I like the idea of using likes or merits (like what we have now) maybe we could have a softer version of merits (we could call them commendations or kudos points).

I rmember this sort of thing used to be done by PM before the merit system so we at least have evolved by then.
5262  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is there a culture where people are sorted by aptitude at age 9/10? on: August 29, 2019, 06:42:15 PM
Why would this be done anyway?

Most of the times I was in school I felt I was doing jothing. Maybe we should just make subjects a lot harder to ensure that everyone remains challenged but schools won't do that as they can't then assess students on it (schools won't get people higher qualifications if they don't need to)... Maybe something like this alongside the current school system might work so people get taught a fundamental knowledge but then have an ability to specialise in something in particular that they're good at... They ahould come up) with something that makes students better at doing lots of other skills rather than just being able to sit exams at the end of their time in education.
5263  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: 350 or 351 daily moving average? on: August 29, 2019, 02:00:12 PM
It's the average price over that number of days. I haven't heard of the 350 daily but I guess it's like the 50 weekly but with daily prices factored in instead... 351 includes the extra day and he's said he's made it easier by using the 350 so I'd say there's a negligible difference between the two.

I can do this if you still need it.
5265  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Mined Block Calculation | Mining Difficulty on: August 29, 2019, 12:13:50 PM
In addition to what bitcryptex said, if you take the numbers you quoted above and do this:

Average time a block is found = 10*theoretical number of block that should be found/number of blocks actually found

You get 9.458 minutes (to 4 significant figures). This means that while the number is still not exactly 10 minutes, it is fairly close to since the hashrate keeps rising and the difficulty doesn't change every block (people might time turning on mining equipment just after the reward has changed too to be able to mine more and calculate profits more easily).
5266  Other / Meta / Re: Add real-time Bitcoin price in the forum. on: August 29, 2019, 11:45:14 AM
Depending on whether it's possible to encapsulate the price when it gets stated, there might be ways attacks occur on the forum to try to deanonymise it's users and it might get annoying for some people (like if we have a huge drop and they want to just talk about bitcoin but they keep seeing the price falling/rising from their target)...

It's been suggested many times. Probably won't happen, but I think someone has made a script for it.

Be careful when using stuff like this as you may be giving access to more than you should with a price ticker (one I know of was one that changed the address in the blockchain.com web wallet).

It will be in my extension tomorrow.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5178297.0

That will be interesting to see, you might want to look at getting the exchange rate from somewhere like preev if they have an api (as they use an average for their pricing).
5267  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum error: not enough Credit on: August 29, 2019, 11:20:44 AM
Does the one seed store 2 cosigners then? I have an empty 2fa wallet and assume one is the trusted coin xprv and 2 are generated from the seed mnemonic or am I completely wrong.

jackg, my advice to you is, more sleep and less falling into trance Wink

Hmmm interesting reference there... Grin

Edit: deleted previous post so it doesn't confuse
Also thanks Lauda
5268  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is dusting attack? Is your btc secure? on: August 28, 2019, 07:46:02 PM
A couple of months ago it was with bitcoin though there was a discussion on tech support from someone confused with getting 500 Satoshi.

I think some people were saying one of the attacks with bitcoin was done to advertise a mixer too. Litecoin must be a lot cheaper to dust attack and, like eth, it's the go to for a lot of people who have been here a while if they want something a bit faster and a bit cheaper in fees than btc.
5269  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Why would someone keep sending 546 Satoshi to themselves? on: August 28, 2019, 06:59:53 PM
I read that omni uses omnicore, will this accept the bitcoin blockchain and is it compatible with lightning once I get that up and running (I want to test out omni and see what it offers) ?

I'm afraid for LN-based Bitcoin tokens you'll have to keep an eye on RGB:
https://github.com/rgb-org/spec

As far as I know neither OMNI nor XCP (Counterparty, a similar Bitcoin-based token project) are currently LN-capable and so far I'm not aware of any announcements in this regard.

No I meant can all three software accept the same blockchain files downloaded by bitcoin core? Lnd loons like it just runs on top of the chain does omni do the same or does it need it's own blockchain download?
5270  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Why would someone keep sending 546 Satoshi to themselves? on: August 28, 2019, 05:56:56 PM
You might want to see https://omniexplorer.info/ then. You could see several token/cryptocurrency which uses Bitcoin's scripting.

On a side note, the main difference isn't the usage of Virtual Machine, but Turing Complete operation.

I went through that and there doesn't seem to be anything but tether.

@dive, I always thought it was about 256 bytes to send an input and 2 outputs making it 256 Satoshi (maybe I need to click thst link before questioning this though). Yeah they've used a default value of 3000, id probably use ~1500 to determine dust instead but it doesn't really make much difference.
5271  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum error: not enough Credit on: August 28, 2019, 01:29:34 PM
Can you send us a screenshot of what the wallet says?

Have you already tried sending or are you waiting to send? If it's sent is the transaction unconfirmed and you want to speed it up?

@moc I expect its the error message on the bottom left that says "not enough funds"?
5272  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Why would someone keep sending 546 Satoshi to themselves? on: August 28, 2019, 11:43:56 AM
Ahhh thanks pooya I'll have to take a look at omni I haven't looked into it but it looks like a way of making tokens and contracts much like on ethereum (without the virtual machine part).
5273  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: August 28, 2019, 01:06:29 AM
I'm getting a 502 on the dot com is that under attack too?
5274  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Why would someone keep sending 546 Satoshi to themselves? on: August 28, 2019, 01:03:08 AM
I was looking at this address (just randomly scanning sites) and came across 11 pages of someone sending 546 Satoshi to the same address? There have been no other transactions to that address, is there a reason where this is a good idea?

https://www.blockchain.com/btc/address/1PuaisyDbJSG7TM2TgawDDUL8xSHSfFUkH

Edit: it was a site that looked a lot like a ponzi scheme so maybe they're trying to make it look like they have genuine investors still while shredding one of their addresses for not very much?)
5275  Other / Meta / Re: Different IP Login on: August 27, 2019, 11:49:07 PM
You need to understand there is always a difference between a session and a cookie and their way of functioning. Session info is stored on the server end and cookie on the user end. So when you don't use the forum (i.e you have opened the forum and kept it idle for 10 minutes or so) your current session gets timed out (Sessions also end when you close the browser) So when you refresh the forum to continue using them, the newer IP is stored in the IP Logs replacing the older ones. This is completely different from the login feature available in SMF forums probably.

Have you found this session stored (I'm presuming you mean some sort of session ID as the session looks to be every event you do during your time on a page - before something loads but I might just be confusing my javascript knowledge with this). I spent a couple of minutes fiddling with the console trying to find a session Id and have failed so far - the cookie for login will be there though.

I always thought the mechanics were that the cookie stored a number on here and the server stores a cooke number that grants access to the user account when you send the number at the start of a session, I thought this number was used as the session ID (not sure on this though) normally when developing sites - on assigments - you just keep a session ID of the user (which could be what is stored by the server) and this ID doesn't go when you refresh the site and only goes once you've shut down the browser (but this isn't using javascript, it's normally using backend server programming).

The 60 minutes thing is definitely right and I skipped past that thing as I read the thread going down, if you don't tick the box and you get logged out on your new session - all of your sessions will get logged out as there is only one cookie stored [a session in this case is the cookie ID which just gets rejected by the server and has to be overwritten when you next log in).
5276  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Bounty hunting is past it's glory days on: August 27, 2019, 10:42:54 PM
I'm not entirely sure how bounties go but I've seen a lot of icos that don't actually launch so I guess a lot of bounties must do the same and earn you nothing...

If you're into bounties, what happens if you hold the coins? Based on forks of bitcoin, once airdropped the base rate of the coins are pretty low but then they normally go up and then back down again (like bch) do bounties do this sort of thing? Maybe it's just people are selling too quickly and killing the price because they're after immediate gains (but I have no idea on how the community works).
5277  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: It costs more to use bitcoin on bitpay than bitcoin cash on: August 27, 2019, 06:09:28 PM
A lot of bitcoiners hold both, I always suggested the smart thing to do was to hold both coins at the fork.  BCH has hung around better than a lot of people expected and I wouldn't be surprised if it pumped to insane levels like it did during the last bull run.

I've still got plenty which I've been happily spending over the years. I fully expect it to go nuts again. But Bitpay embracing is a dead end all the same. No one's going to buy it to save a few cents on fees. The chain is empty which shows that hardly anyone is using it.

I just checked an exchange and they're valued around 0.03 which is really low based on how endorsed they are by other companies. I had money on an exchange, maybe I should've given in and paid with that but I also don't want to hold bch and it seems better to pay without coming from an exchange (not sure why they don't realise that).

With that $15 they have to move it twice and make and hopefully make a profit on the sale of the BTC So they assume the worst case fees.

It sucks, but it's their business model. And for now it seems to be working for them.

-Dave

While the money is in there addresses, they have it. They could easily try to stockpile coins on another address to make fees cheaper and send those at 1 sat/byte.

This is the business model of quite a few sites in cryptocurrency, I saw some leaving transactions at 1 sat/byte to confirm that were months old.

Fees for credit cards in the UK are at 1% (debit is about 0.25-0.5) - paid by merchant - so this makes it much more expensive to spend bitcoins than it would for the merchant to accept debit, but it's nice to pay with btc so...
5278  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: August 27, 2019, 05:38:04 PM
It fails for me after the capt ha on mobile too. Says the connection was reset...

Clearnet looks to be down too
5279  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: bitcoin core wont connect to mainnet on: August 27, 2019, 04:20:59 PM
Try changing the port to something like 22 (if you don't use SSH) and see if that solves the issue or use 9333 (a few alts use that one I think not sure about monero), testnet is also 18333 so you could try that on your core.

it looks like to change the port you just use [1] to change the port either passed as an argument or put in the conf:
Code:
port=18333

5280  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Antiviruses on: August 27, 2019, 12:39:13 PM
@cryptojor

anti-virus is a pointless waste of space, just delete the av program

They normally get rid of tracker cookies and other stuff that can be silently downloaded by Web browsers flaws...

They also tell you the exposure of most applications and how likely it'll be to get a virus from one: not that it's popped up for me for about half a year on the windows machine. A lot of things I use are only made for windows (which is a shame because they'd run much faster on Linux - even Ubuntu is faster and less power intensive than Windows).
