5321  Other / Meta / Re: Gangs of BitcoinTalk :) on: February 18, 2020, 09:52:39 PM
I at least used to be in the Thick-Skinned Gang, though I've tried to be less insensitive in certain areas as of late.  Certainly I've tagged enough idiots and subsequently ridiculed them to qualify.  And I'm pretty sure I've been accused of being in the merit cycling business, though there's no substance to any of those arguments--Foxpup has given me the majority of my earned merits if I'm not mistaken, but that's on him if he likes my style.

Nice thread, OP and it's obvious you put some work into creating it.  The forum feels much less gang-y than it did back in 2017 or so, or maybe I don't know what the hell I'm talking about.
5322  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Any idea why some exchanges keep coins in perpetual maintenance mode? on: February 18, 2020, 12:10:13 PM
because they are trying to save their server resources!
Please don't laugh at this question, but do exchanges necessarily have to run full nodes for each coin?  I know there are wallets for a lot of coins which aren't full nodes, and even if exchanges did have to, wouldn't they just delist a coin instead of stringing their customers along by keeping the wallet in a maintenance mode that it never comes out of?  I could see shutting down the node for a period of time and then restarting it, but to have a wallet permanently disabled just doesn't make sense to me.

I'm not sure Yobit is keeping RDD stakes for themselves when customers trade it, and I just checked and deposits are disabled.  I have a feeling they're running a bucket shop for coins like that.  You can buy and sell them, but there aren't actually coins being moved around.  I bet you Yobit doesn't even have any RDD on hand.
5323  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Craig Wright: A Very Wrong Person on: February 18, 2020, 11:33:55 AM
Or do you think we should all just let him be so he can live in his own fantasy world and be happy/deluded at the same time?
Yeah, I'm not sure he could be compelled by a court of law to prove that he has a pseudonym.  I would think if the government was interested in that, it would be the IRS and they probably would be looking into it.  I don't think it's worth any sort of fundraising effort, plus I think it goes against the privacy that bitcoin stands for.  If CSW wants to live in a fantasy world, let him.  That's his right and it doesn't matter if part of that fantasy is that he created bitcoin.

I don't know much about the man, to be honest.  He's not really a lawyer, is he?
5324  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: RIPPLE CEO goes on CNN , attacks Bitcoin on: February 17, 2020, 09:21:32 PM
I certainly appreciate you posting the link to the video and your commentary in it, but that audio of the interview sucks--it's so bad that it's hard to understand (or perhaps I'm going deaf).

Anyway, I can't stand XRP as a cryptocurrency.  Never could, because it's so centralized that it has its own CEO--and not in the way some coins have a foundation (like Dash) with one.  If he's talking about bitcoin kinda-sorta being centralized in China, then what does that imply about Ripple?

BTW, I'm listening to the vid as I'm writing this and OP made the above point I made about Ripple being completely centralized.  Props.  I'm also curious to see where that Texas mining farm goes as far as hashing power.  I know it's supposed to be big, but I don't think it's going to give China a run for its money.
5325  Economy / Reputation / Re: Vod is a liar. on: February 17, 2020, 09:08:01 PM
I will be posting the details on his activities and public views involving children and their sexuality.  <snip>

I will not be posting any links on this forum, since the link itself will be a "dox".
OK, it's a serious accusation (though it's one I see a lot of people make just as a slur, often with zero evidence presented) so I look forward to you posting the evidence, and also to hear what OgNasty and everybody else has to say about it.

3) You can help us convince OG to let it die and apologize.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that won't work.  Anyway, I will now bow out of this thread and "shhh".
5326  Economy / Economics / Re: Are crypto hedge funds still a good business? on: February 17, 2020, 08:49:00 PM
Starting a hedge fund now is probably like starting one in 2016.
I wasn't aware there were such things, but I agree with you about the above.  I'm not sure if we're starting another huge bull market or not, but bitcoin and altcoins are both up quite a bit compared to where the market's been the past two years.

I don't know what crypto hedge funds do exactly (aside from holding/trading coins), but starting one now might be a bad idea but if someone had started one in 2018-19 they might be poised to make some decent money.  Not sure how many people would have had the intestinal fortitude to do so after everything looked dead for a long time--especially the altcoin market.
5327  Other / Meta / Re: No threats to inflict bodily harm, death threats. on: February 17, 2020, 08:20:07 PM
I do not think that YOSHIE threatened you with anything.
I don't think so either, just based on the wording of that post.  Honestly, I have no idea how to interpret that--but if that was a reply to my question, I wouldn't take it as any sort of threat.  I might be puzzled as to what he meant and might even ask for clarification, but I wouldn't see it as mean-spirited and certainly wouldn't report it.

But that's just me.  Since it's such an odd response and is open to whatever interpretation you give it, I can see how it might be perceived as malicious.  The language barrier on this forum doesn't help matters either.

probably just bad English.
That's what I was thinking.  If he really wanted to be threatening, I'm sure he could make it clearer.
5328  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Battery Question? on: February 17, 2020, 07:50:03 PM
jerry0, every few months you seem to wake up from a winter dream and start asking stupid questions (no offense).
Ouch, lol.

I'm actually glad OP asked this question, because it's something I've never even thought of--and I haven't read all the documentation about either Ledger device, and I probably ought to be more curious about the workings of them, but I'm not.  It's like all those cars I've driven in my life.  I never learned to fix anything past the basics of changing a tire or oil.

Interesting about the Nano X battery.  I don't have an X but have thought often of getting one.  Not that the battery issue concerns me, but it's good to know about.
5329  Economy / Speculation / Re: Pomp 100,000$ Prediction on: February 17, 2020, 07:23:22 PM
Damn, I just couldn't imagine if the price reached that high in 2021, the term "when Lambo" will be trending again.
Uh, yeah....if it did, the market might be in serious trouble.  And it's not as if I'm being pessimistic on bitcoin's prospects of big gains this year, but you did the math: 5x its ATH would be unbelievable, and bitcoin's price would likely crash big time afterward.  That would be exponential growth, and while it might feel extremely euphoric if you're a bitcoin holder, what goes up must come down.

If bitcoin achieved even half of that ($50k) it might be too much.  But as I've said before, I thought $10k would be a sign of a global currency crisis back in 2015 and yet bitcoin got there and look where it's at now, holding on to a price that's hovering around $10k.  So I'll just have to shut my mouth and see what happens I guess.
5330  Economy / Reputation / Re: Vod is a liar. on: February 17, 2020, 05:50:58 PM
I feel using children's sexuality to forward an agenda is very wrong, but so far he wants everyone to know he has no problem with it.  :/
I don't feel like re-reading this whole thread or searching elsewhere for the answer, but where is the post/evidence that he's done something like that?  I don't recall reading anything related to such bad behavior--if you've got a link, I'd like to read it.

You look like an big shit on the name of anonymity.
Vod's never been anonymous as long as I've been a member of bitcointalk.  He either got doxxed or revealed his identity long ago.  He just doesn't go around referring to himself by his real name or pointing out where his personal info is.
5331  Economy / Reputation / Re: Is franky1 making libellous statements about BitRefill? on: February 17, 2020, 05:26:15 PM
I'm not sure about other statement since i'm not export nor fan of LN, but comparing BitRefill with HYIP scheme is very ridiculous.
I'm probably even less of an expert since I know very little about LN or Bitrefill, but what franky1 wrote sounds like just about any other post that's raging against something on the forum.  It's one thing to have a negative opinion about something (like mine with the Keepkey hardware wallet) and something entirely different to misrepresent facts and accuse someone of wrongdoing when they didn't do anything wrong.

And I'm not a lawyer, either, but I don't think franky1's statements rise to the level of libel.  I do think it would probably be a good idea for Bitrefill to refute what he's written if Bitrefill does indeed have a forum account--that way, any reader of that thread can make up his/her own mind.
5332  Economy / Currency exchange / [H] $50 PayPal [N] btc at preev 1:1 on: February 17, 2020, 05:17:15 PM
As stated in the title, I need $50 of BTC at preev 1:1.

I will not send first unless you have significant green trust or if I've done business with you before.

This will be a neutral feedback transaction.

Send me a PM if you're willing to help me out, as I might miss seeing this thread if you post here.

Local rule:  Please do not post here unless you're interested in doing this deal.  PayPal is very risky because of the chance of chargebacks, but I have never done this and won't ever.  Also, I won't deal with anyone under Full Member unless they're willing to send first.

Edit:  deal done with adroitful_one, locking thread now.
5333  Economy / Reputation / Re: Extending "~" to peers of your untrustees through association - Why? on: February 17, 2020, 05:01:07 PM
Thus, if A = B and B = C, then A = C. However, this rule doesn't apply to people.
I agree, and it's the old maxim of not painting people with the same brush as you would their friends.  Unfortunately that happens a lot, not only on this forum but in the world in general.  I think as human beings we're wired to look for patterns and see them even where they don't necessarily exist--thus there's a lot of prejudice and situations like OP described.  I've certainly been guilty of it at times, but I'm looking to get better.

However, sometimes on the internet you just have no idea in situations like this--especially when so many people have alt accounts and whatnot, so I'm not going to pass judgement on someone who extends their bitcointalk distrust list, because there may be reasons I don't know about--and it's not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things.
5334  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Yes, the Keepkey is a worthless black bricklet on: February 17, 2020, 02:19:59 AM
At least it can be used as doorstopper.
Too light, even for a cat door.

Followup:  I sent a message to ShapeShift, directing them to this thread.  It wasn't even easy to figure out how to send them a message, since the links to communicate with them are buried--or in any case, they're harder to reach than they should be.  And yes, I'm probably being overly critical and certainly nitpicky but they're a business and they should care about customer service.

This is what I got back:

"Thanks the message. Sorry to see all the frustrations you are having/had with KeepKey/ShapeShift.

Believe it or not, I've shared your post with the team so they can get a better understanding of our user's experience. We appreciate the feedback and are working hard to optimize our services.

Have a great day!

Best,
Mark, CBP
"

So I'm at least glad someone replied to my concerns.  The damn Keepkey device could be so much better than it is, and as I said I like the simple-looking, minimalistic aesthetics of it (way better than the Trezor but perhaps bigger than it should be, at least compared to a Ledger).  A pretty-looking brick just won't cut it if it's harder to use than it needs to be, and especially if it doesn't support anywhere near the number of coins the Ledger does.  Anyway, that's probably all I have to say on the matter.  Hopefully the ShapeShift/Keepkey team can improve on what they've built, because the potential is there.
5335  Economy / Exchanges / Any idea why some exchanges keep coins in perpetual maintenance mode? on: February 17, 2020, 02:01:36 AM
This is a pet peeve of mine and I'm really curious as to why they do it.

One coin that I've been interested in for a while is RDD--I like PoS coins in general, and I like the way rewards are earned with RDD (even though I'm well aware that it's a complete shitcoin and isn't destined for over 7 sats).  However, there are very few exchanges that even list RDD and two of them--Yobit and Upbit--seem to always have the RDD wallet in maintenance mode.  And as an aside, the other exchanges that have it listed all require KYC, so my only viable option to buy it is Changeangel.

Yobit in particular has a great many coins listed, but you can't withdraw them because of perpetual maintenance mode.  The only thing you can do is to trade them on the exchange, and while that might be fine for some people, for a coin like RDD which has Yobit listed on their website as a place to buy it, it's very misleading.

So my question is why do exchanges do this?  Is it because of lack of customer deposits and not having enough coins on hand?  Why wouldn't they just delist a coin if trading volume is extremely low?

Any theories would be appreciated, and I'll be happy to give out some merits to good replies.
5336  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Yes, the Keepkey is a worthless black bricklet on: February 16, 2020, 12:09:47 PM
maybe there are really people who enjoy something that is complicated, or it might be better to say in what works on slightly different principles.
You are correct, and my OP here is just my opinion--but I do think most people are not looking for an overly complicated hardware wallet if they're looking for one at all.  And if some people love the Keepkey, cool.  It actually does have a nice display and has a very simple design.  It's just all that other stuff that puts a very bad taste in my mouth.

As far as I know The Pharmacist is a Ledger user
You got it.  I own a few altcoins that I wouldn't consider obscure, but I like to keep them on a hardware wallet and that's one of the best things about the Ledger, lots of altcoin support.  And it's sooo much easier to use than the damn Keepkey.

Have you tried a trezor?  (I kept thinking that while reading your post)...
No, because I don't need another hardware wallet right now and I don't particularly care for the look of it.  And yes, that's important to me.  Aesthetics in all things, you know.
5337  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Uptrend Broken on: February 16, 2020, 11:47:26 AM
Bitcoin bulls were surprised to wake up to a massive early-morning drop that sent the cryptocurrency reeling down to lows of $9,700
Did it get that low?  I must have been asleep, because I did see bitcoin dip but I don't recall seeing it below $9800--but whatever, it's on the edge of $10k again anyway.

But come on--this thread title is totally wrong.  Uptrends can have dips; they're not always in a straight line and anybody should know that if they've ever seen a chart of something that's trending upward.  I'd say that bitcoin rebounding very quickly is also evidence that we're still in that uptrend.  In fact, the speed at which it bounced back is indicative of how bullish the sentiment is right now.
5338  Economy / Reputation / Re: Entrust or distrust for this? on: February 16, 2020, 11:41:37 AM
Yeah, I'd say that feedback is uncalled for.  At best it should be a neutral, but it's trust page trolling anyway and certainly should not be a negative.

TECSHARE might be aggressive but I don't think he rises to the level of a cyberbully--and most of us are always preaching how members should grow a thicker skin anyway, so I don't think he's deserving of a neg for that.  Hopefully TMAN will reevaluate that neg, but we'll see.
5339  Other / Meta / Re: Boring Arguments Section Room on: February 16, 2020, 10:08:21 AM
Yeah, we should set up a nice little room for trolls like CH/TOAA/whoever where there's a circular hole in one wall with the circumference of a Coke can.  That way the more reputable members of the forum could show them their true feelings in an anonymous fashion.

Better yet, use that ignore button if stupid arguments and nonsense drama aren't your cup of tea.  And honestly, it's pretty easy to see when cryptohunter has made a new alt account since apparently he's constitutionally incapable of altering his writing style or his themes.  I don't know if that's who OP's talking about, but that's the first thing that comes to my mind.
5340  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Yes, the Keepkey is a worthless black bricklet on: February 15, 2020, 09:15:00 PM
I’ve posted my about my frustration and disappointment with the Keepkey wallet a couple of times—for some reason I bought one on Amazon last year when I didn’t know too much about hardware wallets.  Long story short, it’s been hiding in its box since I tried using it shortly after receiving it but last night I gave it a second shot.

I got an e-mail from ShapeShift that had the wonderful title of “Buy Bitcoin Easily With Your Debit Card”.  Why wonderful?  Because ever since Circle jerked us all around and made their way out of the bitcoin world and wesellcrypto.com shat the bed, I haven’t had an easy way to do what ShapeShift is telling me they can help me out with, i.e., buying bitcoin with a debit card.

Another long story short, I didn’t read the fine print and did not realize the significance of that omission until after I’d gotten myself all set up and KYC’ed with ShapeShift (sort of; I didn’t have to submit a photo but did have to give them some personal info).  Turns out my state is excluded from being able to partake in that buy-bitcoin-with-debit-card service.

As I said, I finally got the damn Keepkey working.  And it’s so goddamn annoying in comparison to a Ledger, it’s not even funny.  The main issues I find head-slappingly, teeth-grittingly irritating:

1) The number of altcoins supported is laughable.
2) The PIN input is a stupid puzzle-type thing that’s completely unnecessary.
3) The Keepkey/ShapeShift website kept opening new tabs whenever I clicked a link.
4) They basically required me to register with ShapeShift in order to use the Keepkey, and I find that ludicrous—I’ve heard there’s a way around that, but it sure isn’t obvious from any of their instructions.  And again, if you compare the Keepkey’s ease of use to that of the Ledger, the Ledger wins hands down every time.
5) And my final thought and last foul morsel of annoyance is that the Keepkey is just a mechanism to get people to use ShapeShift, but you wouldn’t know that if you were just on Amazon and saw the Keepkey description, which is exactly how I got suckered into buying this piece of shit.

Luckily it wasn’t that expensive and the box it came in will make a nice place to put my silver coins in.  If I can figure out what to do with the actual device, there might be some closure for me but I won’t hold my breath.  It’s too light to be a paperweight and too plain looking to put in the display case.

Some people might be able to figure out a way around the ShapeShift thing and may love their Keepkey, but it's way too hard to just set up and use easily and intuitively.  As many of you probably know, I'm no tech geek and I also have little patience for bad design, so the Keepkey seems to be aimed toward either suckers or tech-savvy people who like figuring out stupid problems that shouldn't be problems in the first place.

Love to hear your thoughts on my thoughts.

Edit:  Oh wait!!  I forgot that I had to download the fucking Brave browser in order to get everything to work properly.  I found that to be almost a slap in the face, the icing on the shit cake, and the last straw.  To me, that's just downright disrespectful.
