5361  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin Prehistory on: February 13, 2020, 11:39:47 PM
If you have the opportunity to get 1 Bitcoin, you are very lucky, many will not get it.
That's undoubtedly true but who knows what the ownership distribution is going to look like in a decade or two.  Right now I think there are a few people who own a lot of bitcoin, like the Winklevoss twins and some of the OGs from back in the day.

Anyway, speaking of bitcoin history (not prehistory, though), I'm reading Digital Gold by Nathaniel Popper on the suggestion of gentlemand and I'm glad I picked it up on Amazon.  I got into bitcoin relatively late and never really got to know who the big names are/were, and the book is doing a great job so far taking me through bitcoin's very early days (I'm only a few chapters in).  Not surprisingly, mention of bitcointalk started very early in the book but I was pleased to see that anyway.  If anyone hasn't read Digital Gold and is looking for a well-written journalistic account of bitcoin's history, you should check it out.

Sometimes I've seen names mentioned over and over here, but often that just leaves me scratching my head wondering who these people are--like Hal Finney and bitcointalk's own sirius.  It's very nice the book covers stuff like that, else I probably would have remained too lazy to ever figure it out.
5362  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin won't surge past 11k, your thoughts... on: February 13, 2020, 10:19:10 PM
and also why not try to check other sites than that one?so maybe you can find more sensible topics .
Lol, good catch on that one and good point also.

Anyway, that whole "surging past $11k" thing makes me a little bit antsy, because I'd rather bitcoin get there relatively slowly and preferably with some bumps and dips along the way.  Seems like bitcoin shot past $10k pretty quickly and while I'm happy to see that level again, I have 2017 fresh in my memory.  Hell I remember 2013-14, too, but I was just a bystander at that point who was marveling at the Mt. Gox failure.

But yeah, we could hit $11k soon.  I definitely would not rule that out.  But since I'm not looking for a particular price to sell at, I'm in no rush to get there.
5363  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Price Hits Fresh Yearly Highs, Profit Taking Push the Price Below $10000 on: February 13, 2020, 10:04:40 PM
Will go maybe more down to 9700 usd again
I think bitcoin actually did get as low as that after you wrote your post a couple days ago, but I'll be damned if it didn't rebound as quick as a bunny back to above $10k (barely).  We're not quite at the 2019 highs yet--or even the 2017-18 highs, but the year has definitely started off higher than last year in January, so that's something positive.  I think bitcoin was at around $3200 at the beginning of 2019 and I don't think I expected it to hit 5-figures all year, yet it did.

And 2020 is looking to be pretty sweet so far, although I'm well aware that anything can happen.
5364  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: #####WTS : BTC (i have) => Paypal ####### on: February 13, 2020, 09:58:10 PM
OP, how much are you looking to sell?  I might be able to help you out with an amount less than $75 if you're interested.  Drop me a PM if that isn't too small an amount--I'm not looking to buy a whole lot of btc right now, but I could help you out with $75 worth or less.
5365  Other / Meta / Re: Accusation topic removed? on: February 13, 2020, 09:36:20 PM
If scam accusation was valid he should have been banned and not nuked, imho.
Eh, unless I've completely misunderstood everything here, the nuked member is the one who made the scam accusation and that obviously would not be grounds for a ban.

Looks like the plagiarism did it, which is usually the case unless it's a ban evasion.  In this case neopotism was so new that he probably couldn't have been linked to an alt account that got banned unless mods are checking IP addresses or something, and I don't think that was the case.

Neopotism was annoying and good riddance.  What I'm wondering is who he was an alt account of, because if I recall correctly it was pretty obvious he was somebody's alt.  If that's true, then the main account deserves a ban, too.
5366  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Android wallet with notes? on: February 13, 2020, 12:03:03 PM
And If you are interested in a multi-coin wallet with a great UI, there is Exodus (closed source).
Good that you mentioned the code is closed source, and that's one of two reasons why I don't use Exodus--the other reason is that I can't stand the GUI for some reason.

Anyway, there's a obvious difference between being able to label transactions on your own end and sending a note to a recipient.  Are you guys saying there's an option to do the latter with these examples?

I haven't used an Android wallet in quite a while, but I don't remember that ever being an option (though I wouldn't have used it anyway).  Nor do I think I can send notes with any desktop wallet like Electrum or a hardware one like a Ledger.

Edit:

For example if I send Bob 1 BTC as a gift, I would like to add "gift to Bob" in my list of transactions so I can recall later on what specific transactions were all about.
Oh crap, I misread this the first time around.  So I'm assuming there really isn't a wallet that lets you send a note to someone on the receiving end of a transaction, right?
5367  Other / Meta / Re: BitcoinTalk can become the facebook of money on: February 12, 2020, 07:31:22 PM
Can I make a formal request that we aim to not become the Facebook of anything.
Hear, hear.  Facebook is nothing but an informational black hole, whereby people willingly give up details of their life to a private corporation without knowing what's going to become of that info.  That's why I don't use social media, and not just Facebook.

OP was on my ignore list before I even opened this thread, and after reading his post I'm pretty sure I remember why I put him on it.

This is a forum, not a social media website where teenagers post photos to get likes and comments.
Spot on, and sadly it isn't just teenagers who are using social media sites like Facebook.  Seems like everyone is on it these days, and that's scary to me.
5368  Other / Meta / Re: Analysis – Who ranked who, and was ranked by whom (with an 'r’' not a 'w') on: February 12, 2020, 06:37:06 PM
who have I wanked please dude..
Congrats on being the head wanker (oh that sounds so bad).  I always knew you had potential.

But seriously, it's nice you've done this for a bunch of members--taken them under your wing, so to speak.

I've done the same with one or two members who've taken me up on my offer to review their posts via PM, and I'd invite anyone else who's interested to do the same.  Just drop me a note asking me to review your post history if you're a lower-ranked member, and I'll do so.  If I think some of your posts are under-merited, I'll be happy to help out and if not, I won't--but the way I see it you've got nothing to lose by contacting me.

Props to OP for compiling this data, too.
5369  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Research paper about crypto trading on: February 12, 2020, 06:28:09 PM
1-Reputation
2-Volume
OP, I don't trade derivatives and never have, but mikeywith is probably right with his top two criteria--reputation is extremely important in the world of cryptocurrency, because there have been so many exchanges that have turned out to either be outright scams or have gotten their customers' funds hacked.  I think it would be critical that the site be secure and have whatever protections are in place at other derivatives exchanges--like the CME and anywhere else you can trade stock/commodity futures.

Volume is also important as well.  I think one of the reasons why Bakkt hasn't succeeded like many thought it would is because there aren't many people using it as of yet, and the market needs to be liquid in order for traders to have confidence in it.

Anyway, good luck on your report, OP.  I don't think this is the best place to get answers, but I'm sure you'll at least get some.
5370  Economy / Speculation / Re: Scammers move 12k BTC - dump is comming? on: February 12, 2020, 05:43:47 PM
If the coins are known to be tainted, will exchanges even accept them?
That's a good question.  I would imagine that hackers would be able to find at least one exchange (which is probably all it would take) that would accept the coins, likely not even knowing they were stolen.  Bigger, more reputable exchanges like Binance most likely would not, but who knows.

As far as OP's question goes, I don't think there's necessarily a drop coming because of a large sale of stolen coins.  12,000BTC is a lot, and the thieves might even dump them all at once, but I suspect it's only going to involve one exchange and won't affect bitcoin's price much.  This situation has happened before with other hacks--I'm not saying the sale of the coins worked like that--but bitcoin has proven to be pretty resilient to stuff like this.

The MT.gox coins got sent to BTC-E which then got closed down I think is some relevant history.
There you go.  And that represented a larger proportion of available coins than this current allotment does.  Then again, look what happened after the Mt. Gox fiasco.  Bitcoin crashed to the floor almost.
5371  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC made a move above $10k today due to this? on: February 12, 2020, 03:46:03 PM
nope. zoom in to the hourly chart. bitfinex came back online 2+ hours before that big green candle through $10k.
Even if there was a temporal relationship between these two events, I highly doubt bitcoin's rise was due to what a single exchange was doing.  We're not back in the Mt. Gox days anymore.

Let's face it, bitcoin was feeling some bullishness even before it broke through $10k this time, and it would have been a pretty easy prediction to say that it was headed there.  It was hovering in the $9800 range for a couple of days if any of you recall.  As to the real reason?  I say "who cares" and also it's not something that can be pinpointed to any one event.  There hasn't been any major news, rumor, or anything else that would account for its rise.  I think bitcoin had been beaten down enough over the past two years that investors are starting to muster the courage to get back into the market.

Lots of buying=price increase, and to me it's as simple as that.
5372  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A clue on how to make them see that bitcoin isn't a scam on: February 12, 2020, 03:04:43 PM
I thought bitcoin was a scam when I first heard about it--and the Mt. Gox situation didn't help my viewpoint, but I eventually realized that it was nothing of the sort.

You don't need to convince people nowadays that bitcoin isn't some kind of Ponzi scheme or whatever, because it gets enough mainstream media coverage--which essentially is vouching for its legitimacy--that you'd have to be completely ignorant of what it actually is to think it's inherently a scam.

I suppose if you had to pick a way to prove that bitcoin isn't a Ponzi, show someone its 10-year price chart or show them how much money you've made by investing in it--or show them some online retailers that accept it as payment.  But in any case, I think the population of people still in the dark about bitcoin's legitimacy is shrinking.  It's definitely not the same as it was back in the 2009-2013 years.

The popular opinion about bitcoin is that it's more "hacker's money"
That's accurate, I think--but that doesn't mean people think bitcoin is a scam because of that.  And if they thought about it rationally, ransoms have traditionally been paid with cold, hard cash.  Same thing for drugs and every other illegal thing you can purchase or could have purchased throughout history.
5373  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC is back with a bang. on: February 11, 2020, 09:28:00 PM
BTC crossed 10k mark and went down to 9.5k, right now it's 10297$
Yeah, it's bouncing all over the place and I'm actually surprised that bitcoin rebounded so quickly after dropping back below $10k the first time.  I'm definitely not into TA, but that tells me that there's some solid bullish sentiment in the market right now and my guess is that we're probably headed higher in the short term.

How high?  I've no idea and won't even venture a guess.  Nor would I be particularly surprised if bitcoin drops below $10k again, because volatility is usually a part of movements like the ones we're seeing.

Dit it really went down to $9500?
Close to it at least.  I guess it depends on how you're checking bitcoin's price.  I generally look at preev, but some people might look at what it's trading at on specific exchanges.
5374  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: ANOTHER YOBIT SCAM: THEY WANT TO MAKE 419 BTC IN THEIR NEXT SCAM ! on: February 11, 2020, 07:05:33 PM
The merit system was made specifically for shitcunts who post like that.
Indeed, and I've visited cryptotalk just to see what they're all about, and it's just a ridiculous collection of shitposters, as if they'd skimmed off the crusted bottom layer of bitcointalk members who could never legitimately earn a single merit if their lives depended on it.  And, after having looked at the disaster that is cryptotalk.org, I will never return to read any more nonsense posts there.

Also from what I've seen there, there's much Yobit ass-kissing going on which makes me want to puke.

But anyway, only suckers would invest any money in Yobit's IEO and doubtless they'll all get burned in the end.  Not much can be done about that, even if you try to warn them like JollyGood is doing here.
5375  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: William Shatner doubts Craig Wright’s claims to inventing Bitcoin on: February 11, 2020, 03:52:11 PM
It looks like Cointelegraph's running out of things to write about lmao.
Seriously--and it must be hard to come up with new material anyway, unless it's ridiculous non-stories like William Shatner making a statement about who Satoshi is or isn't.  There hasn't been much in the way of bitcoin news that I've seen, except for the recent price action....but anyway, Shatner has always been a Hollywood media whore but I'm surprised he's still trying to remain relevant given how old he is.

Unless Wright comes up with those private keys, nobody is going to believe he's Satoshi--and that's the bottom line.  It'll be interesting to see what comes of this, but I think he's just putting people on, stringing them along just like many scammers do (and I'm not calling him a scammer, just that this behavior is reminiscent of that).
5376  Other / Meta / Re: Request an option to cancel a report. on: February 11, 2020, 02:55:49 PM
I wouldn't worry about it too much, happens to the best of us.
I'm not saying I'm in the "best of us" category, but that's definitely happened to me before (multiple times) and I recall wishing each time exactly what OP is suggesting, a way to cancel reports.  While it's not critical, it would be a good feature to have especially if it wouldn't take much effort to implement--and I don't know exactly what it would take, but I'm assuming it wouldn't be a big deal for Theymos to do.

I think it's been requested before and would be a good idea.
Yep, I do remember this being brought up before.  But as with most suggestions, it was discussed and then nothing was done about it.
5377  Economy / Speculation / Re: Buy only bitcoin or take chances in altcoin casino? on: February 11, 2020, 01:58:58 PM
I'd suggest diversification at least among the major coins.
I tend to agree with that, though I'm mostly for holding bitcoin exclusively.  There are some altcoins I like, but there aren't many and they generally don't represent any of the top 15 on coinmarketcap.  Being able to stake Tezos from a Ledger is appealing to me, for example.  That's the only coin in the top 10 that appeals to me, and I think those rankings are misleading anyway.

Altcoins have come roaring back--at least just somewhat, but that's probably because bitcoin itself has been up significantly.  I do get the sense that they'll be the first to crash if the market takes a dive, and they'll probably fall much more than bitcoin.  The altcoin market really is like a casino, and I'm sort of averse to gambling.
5378  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to Throw a 10K BTC Party on: February 11, 2020, 12:50:41 PM
Music
Okay so crypto music hasn’t quite hit the mainstream yet, but you can still get your listening on, on blockchain streaming platforms like Musicoin.
Curious to contemplate this--has there been any music thus far that's even mentioned crypto in its lyrics?  I can't say I listen to much contemporary pop music, so I wouldn't have noticed if there were any songs that even mentioned bitcoin or cryptocurrency even briefly.

Anyway, it's way too soon to celebrate with any $10k parties, especially now that bitcoin has dipped under that price.  And in any case, it's not like we haven't seen that level before.  It was only last summer that bitcoin was at $13k or whatever the 2019 high was.  I'll be very happy if we can see it stay above $10k for a while, but I won't be attending any parties even if I knew of any--though a get-together with some forum people might be interesting in itself.
5379  Economy / Speculation / Re: Tone Vays Stands by $4K Bitcoin Price Pre-Halving Prediction on: February 11, 2020, 12:53:28 AM
Man, that would suck if bitcoin dropped to anywhere in the $4k range this year, either before or after the halving.  But despite this guy's prediction (which is crazy bearish in a market that seems to be bullish), I don't think it's going to happen.

True, bitcoin did drop back below $10k in the past day but that was probably people taking their profits off the table, which is to be expected.  To drop 50% would take some seriously pessimistic views on bitcoin on the part of a lot of investors, and I don't see that becoming the case this year.  It certainly doesn't seem to be the mood of the market right now.

This seems to be one of those public prognostications which are made to keep someone's name in the news.  Whoever Tone Vays is, he might really believe bitcoin is going down to $4k, but if that's the case I think he's a bit delusional.
5380  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: YouTube Binance impostor: what is happening right now? on: February 10, 2020, 11:09:55 PM
there have been thousands of youtube accounts being hacked and taken over by the hackers and posting crypto related stuff like fake giveaways.
Recently?  I wonder how hard it is to get your Youtube account hacked--I guess it depends on whatever your password is (the obvious answer) and how easy it is to recover it once it is hacked.  I wasn't aware that this was becoming a problem, but maybe I've had the naive belief that it would be hard to pull off a hack/scam on Youtube.  Makes me wonder if this is at least somewhat in response to Youtube's banning of crypto videos not too long ago.

Someone just sent a 0.2BTC tx to the address they've placed in the video.
Oh crap.  I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but damn.  Who in their right mind would send bitcoin to an address in a Youtube video, even if the channel is claiming to be that of Binance?  Hopefully that didn't represent the person's life savings.
