541  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why is bip 39 a very much reoccurring word in Bitcoin on: March 18, 2024, 04:29:28 PM
In BIP39 our "password" is the mnemonic which is encoded from an already strong entropy of between 128 to 256 bits. Adding more "security strength" on top of it is not needed.
I agree with this and it seems logical, but I want to point out that I don't possess enough technical know-how to actually know if your interpretation is correct.
BIP39 seeds are a much more user-friendly representation of a long string that can easily be read by humans. Usually, when you add user-friendliness and simplicity to something, you also compromise security to some degree. How much and if any security at all was compromised with the introduction of the BIP39 standard is something for the more technically-gifted to comment on.

Jambler could organize raffles that include real physical items for those users willing to accept them and have them shipped either to their home address, their place of work, a PO box, etc. But if the winner doesn't want to give away their personal information, which some don't want to do, the alternative could be to offer the same value of the physical item in BTC. Both types of winners can get a prize that way.
543  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: DIY Seed Storage on a soda can on: March 18, 2024, 04:12:33 PM
Is BitCan's glyph system a widely recognized standard?
No. I have never seen a similar system before.

For example, if something happens to us, will anyone else be able to figure out what this is all about?
All of us have a responsibility to teach our heirs and loved-ones how to access and what to do with backups. That doesn't change now with the introduction of a glyphs backup system. Someone who has never seen a 12/24 seed recovery word would have no idea what they are looking at, let alone glyphs.

Because glyphs represent whole words, what happens if we lose even a single element? For example, one punch didn't go all the way through, or corrosion may only eat away a small part of it...
You shouldn't lose any of the elements (the lines). You need the correct structure to decode the word. You should already have at least one paper backup somewhere. It's from that backup that you set up the glyphs recovery system.

It is good, but choosing aluminum for storing seeds is not good, especially since it is susceptible to corrosion, compared to stainless steel, which is less susceptible to deformation or bending and tolerates heat well.
I know. I mention that in my pros and cons section. You can use the glyphs to make backups on other materials.
544  Bitcoin / Wallet software / DIY Seed Storage on a soda can on: March 17, 2024, 09:40:37 AM
We have heard of storing seeds on paper and metal and now there is a new method to do it on soda cans. Grin
The company BitCan has released its solution for a DIY Bitcoin Seed Storage.

What's interesting here isn't the material used to store the seed but the type of encoding using glyphs.

What you need to create your seed

  • A soda can
  • A flat-head screwdriver
  • A pen
  • A piece of paper
  • A printer to print out the template

BitCan has created a template that anyone can print, and it looks like this:

After you print the template, you can translate your seed words into glyphs. You should already have a securely generated seed. Each word from the wordlist has its unique pattern, which you can see on the website. Here is an example:

Setup Process

  • Using the table with the glyphs, draw your seed words on the printed template.
  • Stick the filled-out template on a flattened soda can.
  • Take a screwdriver and etch the glyphs into the can. Use a light hammer if necessary.
  • Double-check if everything is correct, and find a place to store the metal backup.

Here are a few pictures of how it could look:

.....................................

Decoding Instructions

  • BitCan recommends writing down all glyphs on a piece of paper. Better yet, use the provided template.
  • Look at the bottom square of each glyph first to identify which starting letter the symbol belongs to.
  • After that, identify the upper square to find the correct word.
  • An alternative is using binary search to go through the word list.

Pros

1. It's inconspicuous. You wouldn't know what it is even if you saw it somewhere. Even those familiar with seed phrases wouldn't know what they are looking at unless they know about this seed storage method.
2. It's cheap/free. It requires zero investment, assuming you own an aluminum can, a pen, a screwdriver, a piece of paper, and a printer.
3. Easy to hide because it's thin and small.
4. Can be hidden in plain sight. If you are interested in ancient civilizations and have items or artifacts in your home, you could hide the plate there and make it seem like they are symbols from ancient history.
5. It provides protection against water and moisture.
6. You can use the glyphs system to make seed backups on better-quality materials than aluminum soda cans!

Cons

1. It won't protect you against heat from a house fire.
2. Aluminum is more prone to corrosion than other more durable metals.
3. The encoding and especially the decoding process is time-consuming.
4. The possibility of making a mistake is greater than when backing up common seed words.

545  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why is bip 39 a very much reoccurring word in Bitcoin on: March 17, 2024, 08:28:32 AM
Neither of the three. According to this reply from Bitcoin Core developer achow101, it is not considered "safe enough":
I would say that falls in the 'not want to' category for the reason of the implementation not being safe enough.

Also, more generally, many Bitcoin Core contributors don't consider BIP 39 to be secure. It uses PBKDF2 which is generally regarded to be a fairly weak KDF so it isn't considered to be good for the secure storage of all of your Bitcoin.
Why do they consider it weak from a security standpoint? In other words, how much less secure is it, and are we talking about a worrying threat to a user's coins? A threat that is significant enough to not want to touch it.

Some software (such as Electrum) used BIP 39 in the past but have switched to using their own mnemonic algorithm because of this weakness in BIP 39.
Electrum's seed system came before BIP39. I think they are two years apart. But the older versions of Electrum used something else for seed generation. The seed versioning system we have today came after BIP39 if I am not wrong. At what point did Electrum use BIP39?

As @BlackHatCoiner said they don't consider it safe enough...
You missed the word "don't" in your post above.

Zasto mi je ova stranica nedostupna? Uvek mi otvara btse.com/en/home
Probao i preko VPN, svakako nije lokacijski.
Ista stvar i kod mene. Preusmjeri me automatski na početnu stranicu.

547  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Radical New Discovery Could Double The Speed of Existing Computers on: March 16, 2024, 04:53:15 PM
It could turn out to be groundbreaking technology for many reasons and use cases, but it's not going to revolutionize Bitcoin mining. ASICs are hundreds and probably thousands of times faster than GPUs. A speed increase of 2x thanks to SHMT won't make much of a difference. I am familiar with the idea of merged mining, but nothing more than that to comment on that part.

It's also going to be interesting to see if SHMT could have a negative impact on the lifespan of computer hardware. Perhaps the increase in speed also shortens the life of the chips.
548  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why is bip 39 a very much reoccurring word in Bitcoin on: March 16, 2024, 04:31:58 PM
By the way, is there a safer way to get the xpriv root bip32 to import into bitcoin core as a descriptor without using iancolam.io, since it is an html file that opens in the browser?
I don't use Bitcoin Core so I don't know the answer to your question. However, you should download the IanColeman tool and use it offline on an airgapped setup. That's the safest and most recommended way to work with it. If you use the tool on an airgapped computer, nothing can leak from it, which isn't the case when you use it on an internet-connected PC.
549  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Addressing Concerns: The Growing Data Demands of Blockchain and the Threat of Ce on: March 16, 2024, 10:28:32 AM
The price of both SSDs and HDDs is decreasing each year. So while it's true that you are going to need more and more storage long-term, historical records show that you can purchase said storage for less money.

There are two interesting charts here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/17sljc1/as_requested_an_improved_chart_of_ssd_vs_hdd/

Individuals often lack the resources to run full nodes, impacting their influence on network consensus.
The consensus is the law. This law applies equally to one node as well a hundred/a thousand of them.
550  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: (Ordinals) BRC-20 needs to be removed on: March 16, 2024, 10:06:38 AM
An off-chain layer for NFTs, with Bitcoin as the settlement layer, will be actually be the most ideal conclusion for the "Ordinals Drama". It's going to be more efficient, cheaper for users, and developers could actually build "trading" apps using them because transaction throughput will be higher.
That's assuming that's what they want. 'They' being the creators of Bitcoin blockchain bloat and spam. I don't think they are interested in moving their activities off-chain. I am ready to be proven wrong, though. I think making the Bitcoin blockchain congested is one of the goals, aside from tricking a big enough crowd that the inscriptions have a value. They are trying to prove a point by saying, you didn't want a bigger block size, so enjoy our Ordinals on your low-throughput network.
551  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Possible method for cold wallet spend with bitcoin core. on: March 16, 2024, 09:09:05 AM
for some reason i am weary about having to use other apps or programs in the process. that is either due to a lack of understanding or paranoia.
But if that is the reason, why aren't you worried about using Bitcoin Core? It's open-source, like many other software, but it means very little to you personally if you have no understanding of how it works under the hood. I don't see why you would be paranoid about Electrum and at the same time not be paranoid about Bitcoin Core.

also, isn't electrum quite difficult/not newb friendly?
It's more user-friendly than Bitcoin Core. It's a light client with a native seed format, but also supports BIP39 seeds. It's not hard to learn the basics.

and getting a paper back up of a btc core HD wallet is difficult/cumbersome?
You would be backing up a long string of letters and numbers that make no sense to the human brain. It's not user-friendly, and it's easier to make a mistake with a random character than it is when backing up a set of 12 or 24 English words. Don't forget, there are no seeds in Bitcoin Core.
552  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why is bip 39 a very much reoccurring word in Bitcoin on: March 16, 2024, 08:42:02 AM
That's correct. The reference implementation of Bitcoin called "bitcoin core" doesn't support mnemonic algorithms so if you want to use your BIP39 mnemonic in it you'll have to derive the extended private key (xprv) from that seed phrase and then import that into core using "getdescriptorinfo" command with the desired derivation path.
Some people may hate me after I say this, but Bitcoin Core isn't a very newbie-friendly bitcoin wallet. BIP39 has been around for a decade, and they could have added support for it. The developers either don't want to, don't see a great need for it, or there aren't enough requests to add it. Sure, you can use the master private key instead, but it's even easier with a seed. Bitcoin Core's biggest plus is the full-node feature and being able to use a locally verified copy of the blockchain. Bitcoin Core as a wallet is of secondary importance and isn't for everyone.
553  Local / Hrvatski (Croatian) / Re: ELI5 on taxes in Croatia please? on: March 16, 2024, 07:46:29 AM
I have close family members living in Germany and I don't remember them complaining about having a problem finding place to to live. Then again, they live in smaller cities so maybe that's the reason.
554  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Possible method for cold wallet spend with bitcoin core. on: March 15, 2024, 06:11:20 PM
If I were you, I'd buy myself an airgapped device instead of a hardware wallet. Either Foundation Passport or SeedSigner. It is an opportunity to educate yourself about the Bitcoin space as well.
I would add the Blockstream Jade to that group. It can be used as a normal hardware wallet (not-airgapped) or as a stateless signer, as it uses SeedQRs just like the Seedsigner. The one thing that is questionable is that it requires Bluetooth or USB connection with the Blockstream Green software wallet during the initial setup to download the firmware. After that, everything can be done with QR code scanning. The official shop is in the US, but they have a bunch of resellers all over the place.
555  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Are bitcoin core psbt and electrum psbt cross compatible? on: March 15, 2024, 02:58:02 PM
Yeah, I'm not certain what it means about the fees being later maliciously adjusted.

Seems strange.

Does it mean.

A. If you had 10 bitcoins in your wallet someone could charge the entire 10btc in fees
Even though only want to send 0.01btc to the recipient and want to spend 0.0002 in fees.
I have never heard of such an attack or read about someone suffering from it. I remember seeing mentions of maliciously altered fees, but that's all. I don't know how it's possible to modify a transaction that was already signed by a private key that only you have access to. Wouldn't such a modification require access to the signing keys because it's different transaction data @nc50lc? In that case, you would need to ask yourself who has got your private keys?

557  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What to know of Nodes and Running a Node on: March 15, 2024, 02:39:33 PM
That's because of the conservative design decisions made by the Core developers. Because IF they did what the Ethereum developers are currently doing, it will definitely be harder to run Bitcoin using consumer hardware, then the network will centralize towards the entities who could afford to run full nodes, weaking Bitcoin's value proposition. How then would the community validate the blockchain for themselves?
Ethereum has never been user-centric. Their philosophy is worlds apart from that of Bitcoin. It has always been a network where a selected few who belong to the Ethereum Foundation has the say on the future. Just remember the big DAO hack of many years ago when these 'big' players lost. What did they do? They simply clicked the restart button, and it never happened. That same button would never have been hit if you and me lost that money or anyone else of less importance to them.
558  Economy / Gambling / Re: 🐳 @Whale - Whale.io 🐳 💰 Daily Cashbacks 💰 #SometimesLoseAlwaysWin on: March 14, 2024, 08:12:07 PM
Interesting slogan. I mean the #SometimesLoseAlwaysWin from your subject.
It's true to some degree. You get cashback when you lose, retrieving a part of your lost wagers. Is the cashback applicable only for lost wagers or all bets in a specific time frame? Most casinos give cashback only for losses, but occasionally, you can find one that considers all bets.

A tip. Perhaps you shouldn't call the supported altcoins shitcoins. They are, but still. Maybe some of your players will take offence. Cheesy
