Likewise I have signed and returned the contract to theymos with a holding address: 1BuANiueZAiNashSCfGV5Gmj9P8ReG1D8N
5422  Economy / Economics / Re: How to replace the myth of compound interest on: March 17, 2013, 01:45:00 PM
Agreed - when I was young even a "standard" savings account at a bank earned compound interest - but now unless you have over 5K and pick the right account (which they don't tell you about by default) you end up with *zero* interest.

The current system is failing and that is why Bitcoin appeared at pretty much the perfect time (maybe that's why it didn't appear before).
5423  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin in cloud computing on: March 17, 2013, 01:01:30 PM
Well if others are interested then I would be happy to contribute to something like this (haven't looked into freenet yet but will take the time soon).
5424  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin in cloud computing on: March 16, 2013, 11:57:59 AM
I anticipate that we will soon see the end of local computer systems.

It's funny that similar statements about "central" computers disappearing with the success of the
PC were being made back in the 70's and 80's yet now we have almost come full circle (the only
difference being that the technology has changed from central "mainframes" to central "datacenters").

Although you could be quite right I tend to think that the move to and from centralisation is one
that is likely to repeat. I have envisioned for many years the concept of the "home server" which
securely holds your private data in the security of your own home allowing secure access from
anywhere you are travelling without having to trust untrustworthy 3rd parties (and this makes
even more sense if you are also storing wealth in the form of digital currency on your server).

The more that companies like Google and Facebook use/invade every users privacy for their own
gain the more likely that the "home server" concept will take off.
5425  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: -rescan on: March 15, 2013, 12:34:14 PM
Whilst sorting our my wallet yesterday I came across a few posts that mentioned that "-rescan" is not necessary anymore (since 0.7.(?)), as the client does it automatically at start-up.

This is not correct (although perhaps the other posts were talking about a specific context that the "rescan" option is no longer necessary).

Doing a "rescan" is not a trivial operation (before upgrading to 0.8 on my laptop it would take well over 15 minutes to perform).
5426  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Does dumpprivkey command output include public key? on: March 13, 2013, 02:47:53 AM
Bitcoin does not use public key *encryption* but instead uses an ECDSA (Eliptical Curve Digital Signature Algorithm) and a Bitcoin address is indeed derived from the private key.
5427  Other / Off-topic / Re: I resigned from my job on Friday ... on: March 12, 2013, 02:18:57 AM
Great stuff!

I *sacked the boss* back in 2006 and even though I've been fairly low on funds from time to time since then I have never regretted it.

If it wasn't for having done that I seriously doubt that I would have paid any attention to Bitcoin at all and now I see it as being a major part of where my future lies.
5428  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Want to send bitcoins from the command-line in windows on: March 10, 2013, 12:50:22 AM
You need to have setup up at least rpcpassword in bitcoin.conf first then to start the daemon use "start bitcoind" and to test a command:

Code:
bitcoind -rpcpassword=password listtransactions

If you are wanting to use the RPC commands with bitcoind whilst bitcoin-qt is also running then add "server=1" into bitcoin.conf (then start bitcoin-qt first rather than bitcoind as a daemon).

I would also recommend adding "rpcallowip=127.0.0.1" so that external IP addresses cannot send RPC commands.
5429  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin-Qt / bitcoind version 0.8.0 released on: March 09, 2013, 11:23:30 AM
Issues that I'd had before with my notebook *freezing* at every new block arrival have *gone*. Smiley

It is much smoother and appears to be much quicker (in catching up blocks) also.

Great stuff guys!!
5430  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Want to send bitcoins from the command-line in windows on: March 09, 2013, 10:45:23 AM
The standard Satoshi client for Windows comes with bitcoind which acts as server and as an RPC client.

5431  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Someone just paid 94.35425882 BTC in transaction fee on: March 09, 2013, 08:13:27 AM
What confuses me is how people can presumably-accidentally waste this much money, and apparently never even notice so they can try to recover it.

This is purely speculation but if someone with a high rep on this forum had a brainfart like I did doing a raw tx then it is possible that they might forgo the chance to recover it in order not to be identified as having made such a mistake in the first place (it did cross my mind for at least a second or two before I made my mistake public).
5432  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Working on an idea for simple web-based alternative to bitcoin-otc web of trust on: March 09, 2013, 04:03:14 AM
About time for me to unwatch the thread - best of luck OP and PM for further discussion if interested.
5433  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Working on an idea for simple web-based alternative to bitcoin-otc web of trust on: March 09, 2013, 03:56:23 AM
Maybe you should look up trolling.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^  Why? When you've just showed us all a perfect example right there.
5434  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Working on an idea for simple web-based alternative to bitcoin-otc web of trust on: March 09, 2013, 03:48:18 AM
I think you need to check the definition of a protocol, this is uniform way of doing trust at best.

As far I can see the OP is about creating a send of standard conforming tx's over the Bitcoin protocol that can be used to define a WoT system - if you have something other than terminology disputes or arguments about how easy GPG is or isn't to use that would be helpful to this thread otherwise your input is just coming across as trolling (if you think people should just use Bitcoin-OTC you are entitled to that opinion and I think you've already made that point here so can we keep OT please?).
5435  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Working on an idea for simple web-based alternative to bitcoin-otc web of trust on: March 09, 2013, 03:07:42 AM
at least on the plus side, it would be nice to have a range (similar to the 5 star system).

I understand but IMO that just makes it easier to *game* the system (i.e. getting 10 +5 *fake* ratings is certainly going to be easier than getting 50 +1 *fake* ratings - I have the same problem with the "skill points" system I have implemented in CIYAM Open and am now thinking of changing it for just this reason).
5436  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Working on an idea for simple web-based alternative to bitcoin-otc web of trust on: March 09, 2013, 02:17:36 AM
A couple of things I'd like to suggest:

1) rather than ratings between -10 and +10 why not just keep it minimal so: -1 (failed), 0 (resolved) or +1 (succeeded)

2) reserve the entire 8 digits of each protocol tx so that the protocol can be extended

and of course it would be advised to *formalise* the protocol *before* starting up the service.

Apart from rating specific transactions for services or goods it would be useful to have *special* ratings for things like GPG identity and perhaps even other *real identity verifications* that could useful for services such as loans.
5437  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Working on an idea for simple web-based alternative to bitcoin-otc web of trust on: March 08, 2013, 10:29:21 AM
Well that is true, but they will figure it out that it will be more and more important as there bitcoin career goes on.

Even worse - these people want to be paid via PayPal !!!
5438  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Working on an idea for simple web-based alternative to bitcoin-otc web of trust on: March 08, 2013, 10:12:30 AM
Also If they are giving up that means they are probably frustrated and sometimes it is the teacher that can cause that.

Sure - although they never even got as far as asking for help (basically just complained that they don't want to use GPG and would only join if it they could use their "Google" or "Facebook" accounts to login).

(a bit hard to teach someone that doesn't want to even learn)

Cheesy
5439  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Working on an idea for simple web-based alternative to bitcoin-otc web of trust on: March 08, 2013, 10:06:00 AM
I have yet to see that, really.

And I have already had several people simply *give up* on joining CIYAM Open due to GPG - really!

(perhaps I should refer any future such people to you to get them somehow magically converted?)
5440  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Working on an idea for simple web-based alternative to bitcoin-otc web of trust on: March 08, 2013, 09:52:04 AM
I don't think that the GPG software is particularly hard to use myself (compared to say configuring Email apps years ago) - but people just "don't want to bother with it" is the *real* problem (especially non-geeks).
