5441  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Another (same old) reason to avoid centralized exchanges on: November 02, 2021, 06:58:13 AM
Bitcoin was never designed for centralised exchanges,  if you are going to deposit your coins to exchanges like binance then you need to be prepared for such things. My account was limited and I kyc was not approved on binance, they said someone else has attempted kyc with my ID ( wh is something impossible). It took me 3 complete days to fully activate my account.
P2P accounts are decentralized but they are prone to cyber stacks which are lesser in centralised exchanges.

Bitcoin was designed to pay without any third party. As simple as that.
From here on everybody can make his own use case and everybody has to pay attention that the other party of the deal/transaction is not malicious/scammer.

It seems such a day is becoming less likely; more crypto users are getting comfortable using centralized exchanges which takes away the responsibility of building their funds themselves, at the cost of their privacy.

Unfortunately far too many have also proven that they cannot be careful with their keys, they cannot be careful with their funds, they cannot make any (financial) step without having support and insurance.

Isn't this all rather moot considering that BCH implemented 2-way replay protection? Huh

* I didn't follow BCash hence I didn't know whether that was implemented. Possibly OP also didn't, hence it's good that you've mentioned that.
* it can be seen as a hypothetical question for other forks, especially if by chance OP knew that this was implemented in BCash

The price of gold has nothing to do with its usefulness, it's more related to the hoarding of gold by banks, states, ...
What he's telling you is that the price of gold and its usefulness are implicitly connected. Yes, the price isn't directly related with it, it's a matter of supply and demand. But, if it wasn't useful, why would it be demanded? People evaluate goods by their utility. If they all had the properties of a store of value asset, they could also be used similarly by the belief that they will be used essentially in the future.

Gold does have these properties and is, thus, stored with the conviction that someone will use it to either create jewelry or experiment with it in chemistry, or use it into electronics etc.

Sorry, I disagree. I think that the price and the hoarding are more related to the (perceived) scarcity than usefulness.
And that's what I try to express, but maybe I'm failing to do that, or maybe I'm wrong. I guess that we have to agree that we disagree on this and just move on  Wink
Thanks for the attempt to clear it up though. Wink
5446  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Andreas' current use of BTC on: November 01, 2021, 04:48:56 PM
Gold has other uses - jewelry, electronics, chemistry, healthcare. Even without it being used as a currency, there will always be demand for gold for these reasons. Now, if bitcoin could not be used as a currency and could not be spent anywhere, why would there be any demand for it? It cannot be used for anything else (or at least, any other purpose for it is exceedingly inefficient).

The price of gold has nothing to do with its usefulness, it's more related to the hoarding of gold by banks, states, ...
And I see this similar with bitcoin too: I don't think that those hoarding it as a store of value would care much whether bitcoin is used as a currency or not, as long as they can use it as an asset, even if not traded so often (and bitcoin price is also a result of hoarding more than actual usage).

And with the rise of LN, with far too many keeping their coins in custodian wallets, the users who want to spend may soon not even use bitcoin, they may use IOUs without knowing it.

If I move my BTC to a SegWit address, then on BCH it will appear as a "anyone can spend" UTXO therefore immediately stolen?

Wouldn't it "steal" those BCH.. by moving them to your (new, safe) bitcoin address?  Wink
5448  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to spend Bitcoin Cash without the corresponding transaction being mirrored? on: November 01, 2021, 03:53:39 PM
what is to prevent someone from stealing his coins on BCH?

All the proper tutorials about claiming fork coins tell this:
before claiming the fork coin - no matter if it means to send the fork coins to an exchange or other operations - the very first step is to move your bitcoin into a new safe wallet.
This is necessary not only because of mirroring tx. This is also necessary because the fork coin wallet may be malicious, for example.

due to "backlog"

I find this funny. I guess that they're extensively logging users' every step if the logs have became too big to handle  Cheesy
I guess that the logs filled up some disk space that was shared with other services involved in withdrawals - I don't exclude an instance of bitcoin core either.

Not your keys, Not your coins!

If people would go more by this and would keep at exchanges only small funds for short time, they would not freak out for every announcement like this. I wish to see those days...

sa iti transfer tie echivalentul sumei in BTC pentru ele

5453  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Air Gapped on Windows or Tails? on: November 01, 2021, 01:24:39 PM
Tails can work without persistent storage at all. You keep your seed on a paper and you're good.
I don't think that Windows can do that. And in 10 years you'll forget why that old PC was never online, you'll sell it and somebody may recover the wallet.

Of course, it can be seen as an extreme example, but it's you who has to think on the full use case. On short term, as long as neither will ever go online, there's not much of a difference.
On Windows you may have to also set it to not auto-start USB devices if you plan to use an USB stick for transferring unsigned/signed transactions. To avoid surprises...
5454  Economy / Economics / Re: $1 Billion Science Fund to Use Blockchain Projects to Extend Human Lifespan on: November 01, 2021, 01:12:08 PM
Then can you give me an example of projects that had “those tokens” that used a database that was BEFORE Bitcoin, “blockchain technology”, and cryptocurrency exchanges?

Sure. All the pharmacies, and gas stations, and shops that had for you cards where you gathered reward points. Those were basically tokens in a database and you were able to exchange them back for "value" and buy something.
Lately supermarkets and credit cards also have that. I don't know which were introduced first though, in my country pharmacies and gas stations did it first.
5455  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: PROBLEME BITCOIN CORE on: November 01, 2021, 10:29:11 AM
First thing is that the HDD where you had all that have to not be started. If you installed a new operating system on it and that's what you are using, the chances for recovery are slim.

If he only installed a new operating system after flashing, then the chances of recovery are much higher assuming it is a quite large hard disk (>=256GB), because only a few gigabytes of data are written as part of an OS installation.

My post was also contained the part "and that's what you are using", i.e. other parts were also rewritten, and being rewritten with every new thing he's doing on his PC (of course, depending on the OS and software).
Of course, the bigger the HDD, the better the chance the old files can be recovered, but he should stop using that HDD.

Since bounty managers seems really not interested in this no-ending issues,

2 of his 3 applications are in bounties where the managers themselves are red-tagged.
I see there some sort of "infinite loop" and the red tag seems to be a "detail" too many just ignore, as long as they may(or may not) earn a few extra dollars here and there.

I think that somehow more than red tag is needed, but I'm not sure what, since all the ideas I can think of are against the forum's policy vs "freedom of speech", so I won't express them Smiley
5457  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to Know address hosted by an exchange on: November 01, 2021, 09:20:46 AM
Aside from what @o_e_l_e_o said, i doubt the exchange will do anything without demand from police/government.

It depends on country's legislation. In some countries the exchanges may also auto-report to authorities for monitoring their users' income.
I don't know though how it works and who is complying.

You also could check similar service such as https://ethonym.com/. There's also paid service with free trial such as https://blockchain.ey.com/, although i never tried it.

I think that https://oxt.me/ may also be worthy for the list. It looks more up-to-date than walletexplorer, especially for the new transactions.
5458  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Andreas' current use of BTC on: November 01, 2021, 09:01:57 AM
He was talking about living on Bitcoin and he said that he HODLs his BTC and basically spends only USD.

While his point may have been that if you want to spend, you better spend fiat and keep the bitcoins, he should have also emphasize that he also spends bitcoin, just because he is a model, a trend setter.

Bitcoin was built to be a currency. If you want to buy and hold it as an investment, then that's your right - anyone is free to use bitcoin in any way they choose. But if no one in the world ever used it as a currency, then it has no point and no value.

Not necessarily. Gold is also a store of value and it's being used only as an asset, bitcoin may also go on this path. I don't say it's a good direction, I only say that it's possible. And it won't make it worthless/pointless.

10 years from now let’s imagine the following scenario :

- Mr. Mars and its companies own about 1 million BTC.
- Saylor and his Microstrategy own 2+ million BTC.
- Various other companies around the world own another 2 million BTC.
- Grayscale and similar funds that will soon become ETFs own about 10 million BTC.
- Several dozen countries have declared Bitcoin legal tender owning about 2 million BTC.
- Between 2-4 million BTC is irretrievably lost.

The question is what will eventually remain for the average Joe? Probably a lot of worthless fiat...

In 10 years from now people may spend Satoshi or sub-units of that. Bitcoin can still function as a currency, the 8 digits after the decimal point is a lot.
It all depends whether people will still spend or will be convinced to just HODL.
5459  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: PROBLEME BITCOIN CORE on: November 01, 2021, 08:41:36 AM
I have some of my bitcoins on bitcoin core unfortunately I flashed my hard drive on my old computer and I did not note my seed on paper or I did but I can not find it anymore, how little we do to recover his seed, please help me I will pay in bitcoin whoever will help me find my seed

I also think that you should get some professional help and if possible, under your supervision (to avoid stealing; keep in mind that anyone who has your keys can spend the coins).
You seem to confuse terms here - for example bitcoin core doesn't use seed phrase, HDDs are not flashed - and somebody may have to actually try to see what you have there.

First thing is that the HDD where you had all that have to not be started. If you installed a new operating system on it and that's what you are using, the chances for recovery are slim.
5460  Local / Altcoins (Monede Alternative) / Re: Se merita sa minez o criptomoneda noua?!! on: November 01, 2021, 08:30:19 AM

Corect. La ambele.
