5461  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: a flaw in the 21 million BTC? on: January 16, 2013, 04:41:51 PM
A shave and a hair cut used to cost 2 bits ($.25).

Now you could get the same for $25.00.

That is a 1,000 times increase.

1 BTC is currently $14/BTC.

Why is it unreasonable that it too could not have a 1,000 times increase?
Your example is of a 1,000 times decrease in value.

A 1,000 increase in the value of a "shave and a haircut" (with regard to the dollar).
Sure, you can look at it from both perspectives but it's better to stay consistent within the conversation. If Bitcoins increases in value as a currency by 1000 times, that the opposite of what the dollar has done in your example.

This isn't something they learned, it was something they were BORN with. How do I know this? EEG and active MRI technology now enables anyone with the correct equipment and training to demonstrate which areas of the brain are active during specific activities designed to activate target brain areas while under observation.
They are born with a susceptibility to sociopathy, but it requires environmental triggers to manifest.

James Fallon was born with the brain of a sociopath but didn't become one due not experiencing the environmental triggers during early childhood.
5464  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Food for Thought: Nature of Justice & Why nations were formed on: January 15, 2013, 08:38:02 PM
Wrong question.
No, it's the only question that matters.

Obviously if someone wants to be part of a nation that has this tax rate and policies then they agreed to be subject to those laws.  If not then they would not be part of the nation, they would be part of some other nation where they agreed with their laws and taxes or lack there of.
Now I understand why you didn't want to answer the question.

I need to start planning for this so that the obvious choice is living with my sister.
Why do you need to do anything? Aren't you an adult who is free to choose who you do and do not associate with?
5466  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Food for Thought: Nature of Justice & Why nations were formed on: January 15, 2013, 08:08:39 PM
Around 10-19% seem to be a range I feel would be acceptable and would meet the needs of basic services.
tl;dr

Should other people be free to disagree with you, or should they be forced to comply with what you think is acceptable?

Not looking forward to having my mom move in.
So don't let her.
5468  Economy / Speculation / Re: A word of caution to those who have bought recently on: January 15, 2013, 06:42:50 PM
I'm the black sheep of my family because I do not "respect my elders", because they hold to this exact false sense of entitlement.  If I try to explain it all to them, I'm either being a "know-it-all" or just an asshole.
Just remember this phrase for when the time comes:

"Sorry about your bad luck."
5469  Economy / Speculation / Re: A word of caution to those who have bought recently on: January 15, 2013, 04:04:51 PM
I don't feel as sorry for them as I do the younger generation.   People who have lived their entire lives under a lie of unfunded entitlements aren't suddenly at age 60, 70, 85 going to say "oh well guess I need to get back to work it is the fair thing to do".  No they are going to use their considerable power as a voting block to ensure they keep as much of what was promised.  The consequences to the overall economy, the future of the country, and the quality of the life for the next generation be damned.
They'll try, but it won't work for long. The pensioners and retirees in the West will end up just like the ones in the USSR.

I use the watchlist as a way to narrow down which new posts I want to see by using the "Watch board" feature.

Until someone publishes a grandma-easy Bitcoin client that makes secure backups, most old people with money won't know how to invest.
Most old people don't have any real wealth to invest. Their retirement plan is to have the government pillage the younger generations.

Making up a story based on the observed results to explain the behavior is Science. Wink
This is a common, but incorrect, description of science. Whether your stories are about atoms or are about leprechauns, telling stories isn't science.

Presenting repeatable process for logically deriving conclusions from empirical measurements is science.
5473  Other / Off-topic / Re: Perpetual motion device - Free Energy - Do you believe in it? on: January 14, 2013, 10:23:14 PM
[Alt-science warning]
Nobody can know what exactly atoms are. We only have theories and a bunch of statistics. I do not think the electrons are spinning around nucleus like pictured in countless text books. I think the entire atom is rolling around it's axis, or better, is itself just a whirl, with it's center rolling fast and the outer parts moving slower (just like our solar system). The speed of the whirl depends on temperature, at absolute zero all motion ceases and and matter decays back to background of space. Opinions welcome Wink
Learn what epistemology is so that you can understand the difference between science and just making up a story.
5474  Other / Off-topic / Re: Perpetual motion device - Free Energy - Do you believe in it? on: January 14, 2013, 06:53:12 PM
I really want to ridicule the OP for posting about perpetual motion but considering that I'm posting rooster / cock pictures can I really take the moral high ground here?
At least roosters and cocks actually exist.
5475  Economy / Economics / Re: Why a fixed aggregate makes sense on: January 14, 2013, 06:09:37 PM
Joe and Jane sixpack don't care that they can buy 1/XXXX of everything.  They want 1 coin to buy 1 gallon of milk today, tomorrow, next year and 100 years from now.  To them that is a consistent measurement.
I'm skeptical that the apocryphal people in your example would prefer the coin which buys one gallon of milk today to only buy one gallon of milk in the future instead of more than one gallon.

I think what they actually care about is not losing purchasing power, not consistent measurements.

We need a "FUD MAKER"/"IGNORE THIS GUY"/ tag for people like lucif
Sometimes his FUD is funny. I laughed at the the parody interview with the BFL customers video.
5477  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The best Bitcoin cold storage? on: January 12, 2013, 11:01:34 PM
Dude.  That is NOT how a magnetron works.  Magnetrons are oscillators, not accelerators.  And the frequency is controlled by the geometry of the resonant cavities, not the voltage.  If you increase the gate voltage, you might kill yourself, but you won't get x-rays.

Shut up before someone gets hurt.
The part about cathode ray tubes was correct.

If you ever get your hands on a schematic for a CRT display you'll find marked components for X-ray protection. They keep the voltage in the flyback transformer from exceeding a value which could produce X-rays.

5479  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Deciding whether to use my coins or hoard them... on: January 11, 2013, 01:11:43 PM
I'm trying to move as much of my routine spending into Bitcoin as possible. So far I'm successfully paying for mobile phone service with bitcoin, and I've convinced my landlord to open a Coinbase account and make a payment page so that I can now pay my rent with bitcoins.

By the end of 2013 I want to pay all my expenses directly with bitcoin or via a bitcoin-funded prepaid debit card. At that point I'll convert every paycheck to bitcoin and hold no dollar savings.
5480  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: radioreference.com considering Bitcoin payments, but no interesst in Userbase on: January 11, 2013, 01:32:59 AM
A little while ago I spent like 72 hours starting a thread and discussing Bitcoin on the most popular German silver-forum.

The thread was quickly filles with total irrational reactions and personal insults from other forum members. Most of them did not have a clue what they were talking about but accused me as if I had suggested to give Satan a blow job.
Some people buy metals because they dream of becoming fabulously wealthy when society abandons paper money and reverts to a gold standard.

The idea that this might not happen is extremely threatening to the hopes of such people and they tend to respond by attacking anyone who suggests alternate scenarios.
