What I don’t get is why there is no official announcement as yet, other than that the site has been compromised, and that the events are being looked into. I say this from the point of view of the fact that the site is back up and running (and has been so for quite a few hours), and anyone who read the news, should actually be in doubt as to whether the site poses any danger at all currently. I don't mean about the doubler thingy which is no longer there, but the conceptual gap between the site being up and running and the latest status on the events.

Possibly in light of this: https://bitcointalk.org/sbounties.php, although the reward bounties are security related, and despite explicitly mentioning that one " should not expect any payment for non-security issues", perhaps there may be some exceptional wiggle room.

That was the intent on the scam modal screen use on bitcoin.org (see Newbies, please be aware that Bitcoin.org is compromised! ): Click (amount button) & easily pay a fixed sum of 10$, 100$, 1000$ or 10000$ in BTC, or alternatively enter a custom amount. The odd looking BTC amount corresponds to the BTC equivalent of 100$ at the time. Note: The URI modal was accessible yesterday on archive.org, but it isn’t today. It is though at https[colon]//archive[dot]ph/ERUpl (beware: scam modal screen).

There are literally hundreds of topics on the matter here (search around on Beginners & Help and you’ll see), and even some options to practically guarantee earning a bunch with just a few (albeit interesting) technical skills that can be obtained with a bit of effort. Regardless, the prime method is simply to create interesting enough content here and there, and that accounts for things like questions, answers, information, criticisms, helping others, well-versed opinions and so forth. <…> If you have a close look, you will recognize that merit is produced by the founding users of Bitcointalk and their close circle. <…>
Not really. There are many Merit Sources that are rather newish to the forum, being just two or three years old, with likely lack of connections to anyone previously here.

This is actually the format that the scammers were using on bitcoin.org’s doubler pop-up scam. Clicking on the chosen amount’s button would modify the amount parameter, making it easier for the transfer to be initiated (providing your software is set-up to process URI). Scamming made easier, at the click of your mouse ... i.e. code taken from their pop-up’s generated URI: bitcoin:1NgoFwgsfZ19RrCUhTmmuLpmdek45nRd5N?amount=0.0022883

Same crap as sites with near to exact content and even better scam deals in terms of ROI tan the one you provide (you’re being ripped-off by what’s being "offered" in the OP by comparison): https[colon]//invest-alliance[dot]org https[colon]//www[dot]cryptofinancialfreedom[dot]com/ https[colon]//royaltrade[dot]ltd https[colon]//abacusinvest[dot]net/ http[colon]//gctempdemo3[dot]buy4script[dot]net
Same old, same old. Get a massive ROI in a very short time span. Probably see some virtual gains, to be asked for more investments and an extra sum to attempt withdrawls. I’ve only listed a few sites with the same scammy claim above. This is what they do. They use a similar template, change the offers, and host them on different domains. Then they spam the links all over social media, or use contact site participants to lure people to these sites.

If anybody want’s to take a careful look at what the hackers did on the site, there is an archived snapshot of what was going on before the site was unplugged: https[colon]//web[dot]archive[dot]org/web/20210923025255/https[colon]//bitcoin[dot]org/Essentially, they created a modal screen stating the following classical bullshit: The Bitcoin Foundation is giving back to the community! We want to support our users who have helped us along the years. Send Bitcoin to this address, and we will send double the amount in return! Limited to the first 10000 users! Use this QR code or address below
ANY AMOUNT SENT TO THIS ADDRESS WILL BE DOUBLED AND RETURNED TO THE SENDER!
Then they provided some selectable "contribution" amounts (10$, 100$, 1000$, 10000$ in BTC ,or custom value), and provided an address to sent the BTCs to. You apparently couldn't get past the modal screen, so that’s all you could get access to whilst the hack was running.

( too late now).

If anyone want’s to take a sneak peek at what it looks like managing (custodial) bitcoin through Paypal, their website now has a video that pretty much shows how it works through their app: https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/cryptoIt seems pretty easy to manage. Of course you’re missing out all the fun and part of actually being their custodial (with the entailed responsibility), sending and receiving transactions, and even making payments (for now) …

Ver: https://www.coindesk.com/business/2021/09/21/leaked-slides-show-how-chainalysis-flags-crypto-suspects-for-cops/
