5541  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S19xx vs Avalon 1246 vs Whatsminer M30S/M31S on: February 04, 2023, 11:23:44 PM
I do not own any miners, but have been running a 2mw hosting facility the last 8 months and started with the company(and mining) 18 months ago. At my site we have about 600 machines currently. And host all of the above mentioned miners. 360 s19 series, about 100 avalon(1246 and 1166 pro), some L7, goldshells, and some what's miners m21-m30s++.

The facility is non climate controlled with temps ranging from 10-102f.

My experience has been most positive with s19 series, main failure being psu but also bad soldering on hashboards.

I very always liked avalons(started with 1046 and now to 1246 and 1166pro). They're simple to work on and once you understand the kernel log typically pretty easy to figure out any issues.

The site has about 40 what's miners. There has been 1 WM fail since we began hosting. They have by far been the most reliable. They also run the hottest by far. And due to the really low failure rate, that is the miner brand I have the least experience with lol. Really small sample size(40 out of 300 compared to 360/600 s19 series).

Our company started a sister site that just got fully set up a few months back. 10mw. Running exclusively WM.

Depending on where you live(weather/temp based if non climate controlled) can be a main reason for going with any specific miner. Power consumption/availability is the obvious first factor. Understanding flow dynamics and keeping fresh intake cooler air coming in and not getting heat swirl from the exhaust coming back into the mine can be a huge challenge. Once you get that figured out, it makes keeping a lot of miners physically in close proximity to each other consistently mining.

Long story short, even though WM are the least experience I have...I'd go with WM. Specifically because that is the least experience I have out of the above mentioned miners(they have stayed mining consistently excluding curtailment periods). More uptime means more money, less failures equals less cost.

Good luck! Hope this helps. This is my first post. I'm pretty much self taught with mining, so take my advice with a huge grain of salt!  I'm the only employee at my site now, and have managed to keep 600+miners running 99% of the time, with a failure rate under 2%, for the last 8 months(similar results the previous 10 months but completely different setup/dynamic). Saying all this to give an idea of why I'm giving my input/recommendation.

Nice first post.

"What balloon?"

-------

How is that global warming working out?

Coldest wind chill ever recorded in continental US, say forecasters
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-64485092

that's just a weather extreme and proof of global warming......  Roll Eyes

Actually it is a two day shot of cold air.

We will be 30 degrees warmer by Sunday.

Back in the days when I was a teen you did not get a 2 day shot of cold, more like 2 weeks.

NJ weather =

Sat   22
Sun  50
Mon  52
Tues 50
Wed 54
Thur 59
Fri    60
Sat   45
Sun  40
Mon 49

and zero snow this winter.

https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/nj/jackson/KNJJACKS28

1) I am certain global warming is happening.

2) Not so certain if people can speed it up or slow it down.

You should argue point 2

not point 1

This winter in NJ Dec 21 to Feb 4 is 45 days and 40 have been over and 1 tied and 3 under.

I have been to that mountain that they recorded 101 below and that's is more a factor of high wind speed plus cold temp.

It -30 temp and 71 mile speed per hour makes temp = -101

But -40 temp and 40 mile speed per hour makes temp = -80

My point is global warming is supposed to make higher windstorms which could do what you want.

Why not find glacier photos to prove its not melting?

Hint most glaciers are smaller.

I don't mind global warming it is happening.

But politicians fuck with it. Look into CFL vs LED

LED = great
CFL = garbage

obama pushed CFL's on USA  when LED's were 2-3 years away.

Really fucking bad thing to do in the name of global warming as CFL bulbs are loaded with mercury.

bla bla bla bla.

go back to 1992-2003  gold charts.

it stayed in a 200-400 usd slot for that entire time.

It is now at 1800

btc has been in a 15k to 69k slot since fall of 2020 about 2.6 years.

we could stay in that slot for 10 years and then go up to 310k .

gold did that btc could to.

the analysis I gave is as valid as the op's

patterns may match him or me or entirely some other thing.

That latest U.S. jobs report is pure BS. With all the mass layoff announcements? In the first two weeks of Jan?

No. Fucking. Way.

I'm sure the numbers were fudged, probably pulled forward holiday and contract hires, just to dump on the longs.

They'll revise down months later.

The Fed really wants to keep this inflation narrative and rate hikes going, drag it out for as long as possible.  Roll Eyes

Probably a better measure but not reported in the media:

That is pretty bad and about the same as the UK where many over 50 year olds have given up working as it just doesn't make sense with the high taxes, especially on large pension pots.

And you know which other country has a 62-ish % labor participation rate?
Russia!

Most of Europe in fact scores worse. Only The Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries do a bit better.

These countries surprisingly all score (much) better:
The Republic of Congo 66%
China 68%
Ghana 68%
Kazakhstan 69%! (Borat will be happy, also with that number)
Central African Republic 71%
Niger 73%
Zambia 73%
Cameroon 75%
Bolivia 76%
Rwanda 82%
Madagascar 85%
Qatar 87%

Laughably low labor participation figures in the west. I think we are done for with this self destructive path, including big problems with demographics and scamming cunt politicians and central banks.

Maybe Bitcoin can save us to a certain extent but except for that I suspect the continent that has a bright future ahead in the next 100 years is mostly going to be Africa.

. Well  the gov is feeding money into the over 62 crowd.

This looks to be ideal for the home miner with use in someone's garage or basement.

Not to sure I would put this in the living room however.

Wish that my residential power was cheaper, I'd be a buyer if it was!

It has a lot of options.
It can hook up to your pool in the summer.
It may be able to heat hot water tanks.

Our mine has 100kwatts of spare power. if a tank pulls 6kwatts we could do at least 12 maybe 15 tanks.

Thus 12 x 200 = 2.4ph

And if we use m50s++

12 x 250 = 3.0ph

"Bitcoin crashes due to another fork threat!"
Blah blah blah. Some shit, different year.  Roll Eyes

"Bitcoin crashes due to child pornography permanently written into the blockchain"

I want no part of any of that.

For that matter you could put top secret documents on it.

Anyone with a full node blockchain could be accused of child porn and with treason.

UK interest rates to 4%

It may not sound like much but with most of the economy being used to near zero rates for over a decade I doubt this will work out well for the economy over the next few years.

I see two outcomes:
1. The higher interest rates will continue to slow down the economy hugely, a downturn in the housing market (which is already happening) with prices going down 30% (price effects are minimal at the moment with many people holding out but eventually things will shift). Rates will thus be cut pretty soon and possibly down back to 0.5% within 2 years. Inflation hopefully disappears and we may even see deflation.

2. People will weather the storm to a certain extent but will expect massive pay increases (we are still having many strikes in the UK). With layoffs in the tech sector especially I can't see this happening but IF salaries do increase inflation will simply not go away and in turn we would need even higher interest rates.

It will be interesting to see if further global events will cause even more problems: Russia either destroying Ukraine completely or giving up. The latter I can't see happening no matter how much the west wants that. Maybe things will escalate even further and give China ideas with Taiwan. China energy demand (due to reopening) leading to higher oil prices.

the rates act like a wealth transfer.

Here in the USA we are over 4 closer ro 4.5%

So a large fund in the USA is available to US government worker.  "G fund tsp" https://www.tsp.gov/funds-individual/g-fund/

It is based on bond rates and is paying about 4%. There is about 300 billion in it . It was paying 1.2% Dec 2021.

so 2.8% is 7.4 billion a year more  in interest.

from a google search :

"How much does the US have in savings accounts?
How much does the average household have in savings? While the median bank account balance is $5,300, according to the latest SCF data, the average — or mean — balance is actually much higher, at $41,600."

2.8% of 41600 = 1165 a year

So two types above are getting money moved to them here in the states.

While apple stock holders and Tesla stock holders are getting wealth taken from them.

this swing has to happen every once in a while.

go back and look at rates from 1973 to 1997 they were really high.

Wow a 4 MB block is mined today first time in Bitcoin history... I don't know how that happened but does not seem right.

There must be something missing here, What if someone tries to add much larger jpeg. Can it be exploited?

@jjg..sorry, I am too "beat up" at work this week to post numbers, will try to sum it up sometime during the weekend and/or on Fri...

Yeah well I am prepped for 10 years of sideways motion.

Check what gold did from 1992 to 2001

no reason btc can't do exactly that.

20k-35k for 10 years in a row is certainly one possibility.

So + 25 points as expected

https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/federal-reserve-meeting-interest-rate-hike-february-2023

"Today's Developments
Watch Live: Federal Reserve News Conference
Watch Live: Federal Reserve News Conference
Watch Live: Federal Reserve News Conference
Play video: Watch Live: Federal Reserve News Conference
Stocks pared declines—with the Nasdaq recently flipping to a slight gain—after the Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate by a quarter percentage point to 4.5%-4.75%, slowing increases for the second consecutive meeting.

That gives officials more time to study the effects of its tightening as they debate how long to continue raising rates and how long to hold them at that higher level. ..."

And btc is back around 23.1k

we peaked near 23.9k on the 29th

with the expected +25 points I am think we drift upwards a bit soon.

We get a CPI on Feb 14th for the month of January
Then a CPI on March 14th for February

if they drift under 6% maybe we go flat for March fed rate

15% shot predicted for that. see below
