I used to be pro-nuclear, but this is starting to scare the crap out of me.

Also, this was a rather interesting comment below the article.  Makes you wonder how much more of this sort of thing we're going to see, even if the situation doesn't worsen from what it is now.

Reactor 1's core may have melted all the way through the concrete by now.  Reports of cracks in the surrounding area with steam coming out of them indicates it may be hitting small amounts of moisture in the ground, outside of the containment.

If it hits a groundwater source, it could cause a hydrovolcanic explosion much worse than anything seen so far...

I'd have to agree with ALPHA on this one.  Why is it right to force other people to work so that more people can live?

And if we are forcing other people to work so that more people can live, where do we draw the line on life or death?  If it costs $10 to keep a person alive, do we force people to do it?  What about $10,000?  What about for $10,000,000?  At some point, we will have enslaved ourselves entirely to the diminishing returns of saving people's lives.  But shouldn't saving lives be optional in the first place?  And if not, who decides who lives and who dies?  It's a scary place to be when the government is dictating those choices for us.

These questions require some effort and cost/benefit analysis, which is hard. Therefore, we should just let them all die.

In libertarian crazy world, the only thing worse than a government taking lives is a government saving lives.
I'm open to suggestions.  I don't think it should be up to a government panel though.  I think it should be up to individuals what lives they want to save.

Most of my cards are not set to 965. Right now none mine higher than 850 but I will be seeing what they can do in the next few days. Now I know what to shoot for:)
Keep in mind that the wattage usage goes up exponentially when you overclock.  Unless you don't pay for your electricity, there's likely a point of reversed returns where you'll be losing more money in increased electrical costs than you would be gaining from the overclock.

I'd be interested to see some more detailed analysis on that though.

You're clueless as a door knob,

Do you know what the word "exponentially" means?

What detailed analysis do you need? Pull out a damn meter and do some test.

Yes its exponentially difficult to understand.

1) Thanks for making me laugh with your lame attempt at an insult.
2) Yes.
3) I don't have a meter, or I would.
4) It cannot be exponentially difficult to understand.  It's really rather simple, I just don't have the equipment to do it.
5565  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Mother of 15 Kids: “Somebody needs to pay for all my children." on: December 02, 2011, 07:22:01 AM
Children should be given equal opportunities in life regardless of their parents' decisions.  Though the mother is clearly an idiot for saying that "someone should be held accountable" (you mean yourself? idiot), the children should not have to suffer for her lack of responsibility.  If nobody is willing to support them voluntarily, then I must argue that this is one of the few cases where the coercion of the state is necessary and justified, not to guarantee equality of outcome, but to guarantee equality of opportunity for these kids.
However, the mother should not get a single cent for her irresponsible actions.

Somebody has to care for them to want to enslave people to have these children cared for. Otherwise, they would be left to die. The fact that it's an issue shows they will be cared for. It's only a matter of expressing that compassion morally without tyranny. In the end, if violence has to occur, it's only due to laziness from the people who send the brutes to get the children cared for. It's uncalled for. If you "care" so much about the children, go care for them yourself but don't force anybody else to do it.

In the end, it's just a desire: you want the children cared for. You may also want your lawn mowed and a steak; that doesn't justify violence to achieve these ends.

5567  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin accounting and taxes on: December 01, 2011, 11:43:25 PM
Here's a good question for the accountants.

If I were to have had 350 bitcoins in my wallet in June when the price was over $30 (and am in the U.S,) would I be required to file an FBAR?

Quote
United States persons are required to file an FBAR if: The aggregate value of all foreign financial accounts exceeded $10,000 at any time during the calendar year to be reported.
No.  Not unless/until Bitcoin is considered a foreign currency or foreign account.

Another good one can people who lost funds in mybitcoin.com collapse write that off as a catastrophic loss?
Catastrophic loss?  That's not a term I am familiar with with regards to taxation.  I'd be more inclined to just call it theft.
5568  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - a new thin client on: December 01, 2011, 11:07:41 PM
I'd love to see this in a java format.  EVERYTHING can run java, quickly and easily!  Python would be great if it were built-in to OS platforms, but a lightweight java client could mean instant accessibility for anyone on any platform.

I think that until an official ruling on Bitcoins is made, the best and simplest route to go is to just record income when (and if) Bitcoins are turned into USD.  This is assuming you are accounting for Bitcoins creating through the mining process.

...And a corollary, it seems likely, would be once an official ruling *is* made on *Bitcoins* it might turn out to be time to focus more on alternatives on which no official ruling exists... (How far would one need to slip on which slippery slope to achieve that, hmm?)

-MarkM-
Eh, doubtful you could go there.  They'd probably make a new law broad enough to cover all similar "electronic currencies" or something.

If you make money trading Bitcoins, then that income (loss) should be reported as capital gains (capital losses) when the Bitcoins are sold.
5571  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Downloading the blockchain on: December 01, 2011, 06:14:49 PM
My estimate is 4-24 hours, depending on your connection speed and the connection speed of the nodes you are connected to.

Yes, it is a scalability issue, but it will be solved with lite clients that don't store the full blockchain.
5572  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Biggest current auction site? Volume/users/items/etc. on: December 01, 2011, 06:08:56 PM
I wish bitcoinclassifieds.net would have sellers post prices in USD, then automatically convert them to BTC when displaying them on the site.  It's annoying to see old ads for 6990's for 85 BTC when the seller obviously wouldn't sell it for that price today.
5573  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Downloading the blockchain on: December 01, 2011, 06:03:48 PM
Hey guys,

I just installed Bitcoin on a new computer and moved my wallet.dat and started the client so it could begin downloading the chain. At the beginning it was downloading blocks really fast, but now that it is at 80% it's slowing down to a crawl with loads of HDD activity. Why is that? Why is it slowing down so much at the end? Are the blocks that much bigger? And why is it causing so much HDD activity? AFAIK the blockchain was only about 700ish MB last time I checked, so I'm not really sure why the HDD is a bottleneck when downloading the chain over a 25mb/s internet connection. Thank you very much in advance for explaining my questions Smiley
The earlier blocks only have a single transaction - the transaction to generate a new bitcoin address.  Laters blocks have hundreds, sometimes even thousands of transactions.  So yes, they're going to take a lot longer to download.

Look at the date on that - that was done a while ago!  I just looked to see if anyone had the firstbits 155555.
5575  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Mt.Gox reloaded : Welcome to Mt.Gox's new and improved design! on: December 01, 2011, 05:32:49 PM
I refuse to identify myself on MtGox to be able to use SEPA transfers.

Unfortunately, this is a legal obligation and we have to follow Europeans rules on that regard. FYI, each time you are using SEPA you are sending regardless of what you want/think most of your personal data the recipient of the transfer including your name and address, so basically you are identify yourself.
We Mt.Gox are then legally obliged to match both information sent to us and the one we have in our system. We understand that this overall process may be annoying for some and we would love to make it easier for all, but running an honest and legal business is what ultimately everybody wants and need!

Legality is ultimately a matter of opinion, and the people with the guns (governments) are expressing some really shitty opinions lately.
Legality may be a matter of opinion, but my opinion of Bitcoin operations who chose to attempt to skirt the law is pretty dang low.  Too many people getting burned by operations that are technically illegal and give out little information about themselves.  I'd rather go with a company who is more worried about complying legally, so that my funds don't suddenly get frozen by the government, and to avoid another "my bitcoin" fiasco.

Laws for money operations are there for a reason - to ensure that the consumer doesn't get burned.  If My Bitcoin had complied with all applicable money service business laws, you can bet your bottom that there wouldn't have been hundreds of users who lost 50% of their coins.

But, as you said, complying with laws and regulations is ultimately a matter of opinion.  It is my opinion that MtGox is doing the right thing with regards to that though, to ensure trust of their services and longevity of their business.  You can certainly continue using your sketchy, outside-of-the-law exchanges though.  Wink

Just noticed, a quick credit edit

I am not sure why someone would want to advertise using a quote from Wikipedia as the source for anything, when the actual source is better.

This "Part" is aimed to change with time, also, while I agree that BitcoinCharts is a nice choice as well, Wikipedia is here used for its "neutrality" toward Bitcoin.
Wikipedia is not a reliable source. Quoting it on the front page looks very unprofessional.
If someone edits the article and adds "Mt. Gox sucks balls", will you quote that too? Tongue
Would have to agree with this...  I did a double-take when I saw Wikipedia being quoted.  I don't think I've ever seen that before in my life, except on badly-written college papers that get an F.

Keep in mind that the wattage usage goes up exponentially when you overclock.

Incorrect. It scales linearly with clockspeed, so MH/W remains the same, or even increases for the entire rig. Its only when overvolting that you dramatically increase power consumption.
Eh, yeah, I was assuming some overvolting would be used.  Shouldn't make that assumption though.

This is downright hilarious now.  At least for me.

My question is, what hardware was Tawsix planning to sell to shakaru?  I can understand a closed-door liquidation to a "3rd party", because he could just pull out a part of that $15k he scammed everyone and say that was what he was able to get for the hardware, but if he was serious about giving a hardware list to shakaru in order to sell the rigs to him, what would have that hardware list said?

Just a paranoid thought and throwing it out there.

Deprecration & used parts.

If you "speced" a $900 rig 6 months ago and then price what the same parts used off ebay would cost today it isn't $900 per rig.  Maybe $500.  Maybe there is no hardware list because he hasn't bought used parts to replace the rigs that never existed.
Yeah, that's kind of what I figured - if he was in a pinch, he'd just find good prices on some used hardware and give that "list" to shakaru.

Shakaru - how well does your rental fee for the 8 GH/s match up with Tawsix's "electricity" fees each week?  Any correlation there?
