Since we live in this universe and it's rules, we cannot observe things that have no postulated method of being observed, hence why physicists start to turn into wacky metaphysical philosophers after too much education.

Or people who try to think about physics without enough education Wink.
5562  Economy / Services / Re: Will answer any question about physics/math for BTC tips on: June 13, 2012, 03:23:02 AM
Honestly, this is enough to at least be coherent with your theory. Physics is math in the real world, so it's unlikely the theory would "work", but still, explain anyways. I'd be very interested in reading this mass-independent factor.

It's related to the "law of attraction" and how certain people seem to have what can only be referred to as "gravity".  They grab the attention of young children and calm the minds of adults merely by their presence.  Probably too much hocus-pocus for a real physicist.  I have no idea how this would translate to a mechanism for gravity or celestial motion though.  As you can probably tell, I have very little physics education Tongue.  And no, I didn't bring this up in the situations where I was ridiculed, but you seem like an open minded individual who will at worst politely dismiss me.

Obviously, mass is the strongest factor in gravitational forces, but perhaps there's another factor that can create gravity without mass.  Or perhaps people who don't have "gravity" simply have some sort of repelling force that counteracts their inherent gravity given by their mass.  As you can probably tell, this is something I haven't thought through much and even if I tried, I don't know enough physics for thinking it thorough to be fruitful.  Or perhaps my theory lies more in the realm of psychology and is just bastardizing the term "gravity".

However, I have heard several mystics claim that the force of gravity is lessening in our universe, but we don't notice since it is happening evenly throughout the universe.  I don't know how they would know this or what the mechanism is, but I find it interesting to ponder.  If it were true, how could we know?

And now that I've thoroughly proved my ignorance, please continue with real math/physics discussion Smiley.

I'd much rather see a Bitcoin to Checks service... that way, you could issue me a new check and void the original with your bank if it gets lost somehow.

That said, I've been waiting for a service like this to pop up!

Most banks charge steep fees to cancel a check.

Also, explain gravity. Elaborate on your answer.

This.  I asked a physicist on these forums this before and all I got was a bunch of trolling about how I was an idiot.

I'm not sure what you mean by "explaining gravity", since we still do not really know how it arises. We have excellent models for it (read: general relativity), but it's origin is still one of the big unknowns out there.

Thank you.  That's what I believed to be true, but I've been ridiculed on several occasions by people who don't think past "duh, it's gravity".  We don't know how it arises, but we can observe and predict its effects.

Its actually crazy when you think about it. There are parts of our model for gravity that don't quite add up. For example, the stars in galaxies are moving too fast to be held in by what is our model of gravity, requiring the postulation of dark matter-- but dark matter has never actually been observed and we have no idea what it could be-- only that it has gravitational mass.

I have a theory that gravity isn't constant given mass, but I don't know enough physics to be taken seriously by anyone.

Has pirate made any progress on trying to get leased work for other applications beside bitcoin mining?

I really believe gpumax would take off if there was leased work for things like rendering, password cracking, scientific research, etc. it would also help people with large farms hedge if bitcoin ever had any issues.

I totally agree, those options seem like they would have so much potential as there is a wide range of industries that could utilize the hashing power. Ideally to have some type of secure API that a customer could plug into to get work in and out. It would future proof GPUMAX for bitcoin and beyond. It would be a hell of a lot easier to secure funding too. Right now they read your business proposal and are like bitcoin what??

Any thoughts on what other fields would benefit from brute forcing numbers through 2 rounds of SHA256?  Realistically that's what we're all doing, and that's all our miner hardware is designed to do.

I assumed they meant utilizing GPUs, because if you're talking about custom mining hardware then it's probably pointless.  Although, I suppose a system could be set up where bitstreams for FPGAs could be sent out.  You would only have a limited list of supported FPGAs, but that could work.

I followed you steps exactly other than waiting 5 minutes and couldn't reproduce.  I've reloaded the page and I will wait before trying again.  If it's not too much trouble the HTTP packets might be helpful.  It might be better to email it than to flood this thread.  If you're okay with revealing your email, send it to yrral86@gmail.com, otherwise a PM will do.

That "secure API" would be very difficult to design.  GPUs can upload code to CPUs and hijack the OS.  Don't keep any wallet.dat's on your hashing machines.  If you're talking about just performing various hash functions, that might work, but generic computation is a can of worms I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.

Before the game is recorded in the DB, it the hash is recomputed to make sure everything matches up.  If the recomputed hash doesn't match the displayed hash, you get the tampering error.  I'm having a hard time imagining how what you've described happened.  If you open another tab with a new game, it can mess up the site's guess/salt that is stored in the server-side session, but then refreshing wouldn't have fixed it.  Was this a fresh game, or had it sat around for a while?  Was it submitted previously and had a different error?  Was there anything else you did that might provide a hint?

See my post immediately before yours.  I had the error happen 3 times in a row, on 3 different hashes.  The first time may have been over an hour old, I'm not sure.  But the 2nd and 3rd were newly generated.

I ended up sending BTC to the address it told me, and it worked fine.  But that may have been my 4th attempt, which didn't show the error.

Is it possible that my double-clicking the hash at the bottom of the game page then control-c'ing to copy it is causing something bad?

Yes, it is safe to pay for the tampered ones.  The games look to be fine on the server side.  Still, we need to figure out why this is happening.

It might be good to let the user see their list of unpaid games for themselves, and possible let them cancel them.  Otherwise they have to wait 2 (?) hours for them to expire if they create too many when playing around.  Unless there's a good reason not to, of course.

Can you try a Ctl-F5?  We made some changes to the javascript and you might be caching an old copy.

Will do.

We could possibly show the hashes for games from the user's IP, but those might not necessarily be their games.  We have no way of identifying individual users, other than possibly when they use the same payout address.

No wanting to risk it, I clicked the banner to get a new hash, put my deposit address, changed the bets to 0.10 and 0.20, input my guess, copy/pasted the hash into a text editor and hit 'place your wager'.  Again it told me something had been tampered with.

I tried again, and again got the 'tampered with' error message.

I tried a 4th time, not copy/pasting the hash, and that time it worked.

Then when I tried a 5th time, trying to find out if I could narrow down exactly what caused the problem, it told me it was sick of me and that I should go away.  Or something.

("Too many outstanding games from your IP address. Please pay for a game or wait for one to time out")

Can I find a list of outstanding games, so I can pay for one?  Is it safe to pay for the "tampered with" ones?

Just to be clear, the official word is that there are delays due to Dwolla's change in their TOS and all requests will be processed.  But yes, if you need USD funds quickly, buying bitcoin and selling them elsewhere is the only way to make that happen. (Or buying bitcoin and selling for a different currency then paying huge currency conversion fees to the wiring banks).

The only real wealth we have is the relationships we have with other people. The best performing asset class we can ever hope to reach for is a society that cares for all people.

+1 to the first sentence.  Good luck with the second.

Also, since you are insistent that people answer questions posed to them, please answer this one for me:
What is the sound of one hand clapping?
I provide what is probably a very boring answer, in that it's a combination of two contradictory assumptions. Or I can provide an arrogant one, "I don't care". They are both logically correct, but probably not what you want to hear. It's not the type of answer you are looking for. You are looking for meaning. Logic cannot provide that. Meaning needs to be made up. That is, I think, what Pratchett was trying to say.

Actually, I'm not looking for meaning.  I'm looking for how you choose to answer such a question.  Well done, until you assumed my motive.

And I do believe meaning is subjective.  However, just because it is limited to an individual, or other subset of the population, does not mean that it is imaginary.  It does mean that it isn't provable universally.

5580  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Credit Bureau on: June 12, 2012, 09:23:21 PM
I think it'd be great - but how would you prevent defaulting?

Prosper.com is USD-based peer-to-peer lending.  You should familiarize yourself with their history, problems, and how they overcame them before attempting a BTC equivalent.  Their biggest problem early on was the default rate exceeding the interest rate paid to the lenders.  They overcame that problem by doing credit checks and better digging into people's financial histories to give a more accurate picture to potential lenders.

In my opinion, you'll have to either do credit checks on the people asking for loans, or do insanely high interest rates to protect against defaults (which would likely only further aid the number of defaults happening).

To me, one of the most prominent aspects of prosper was that lenders only funded part of the loan.  This split the cost of a default across many lenders, and allowed for easier diversification of your funds.  Something like that with Bitcoin would be very interesting to me.
Right, and that's certainly a huge benefit.  But in the early days of prosper.com, most investors lost money DESPITE diversifying their funds across many different loans.  For example, if they invested in the D-class loans with an interest payout of 22%, prosper.com had an average default rate on their D-class loans of greater than 22%, losing the investor money no matter how much they diversified.

Yep... I ended up breaking even with the funds I put up there.  Now I'm not even allowed to participate because the state I live in isn't supported.
