I don't have access to MatLab either now, but that looks about right without any tools necessary. This hypothetical round (that never occurred & the admins corrected it as being three different rounds), however, went as far as 9.6 million shares. I know the subject is difficult for new miners though. There is a site with the old-type calculator that will show timeframes for block finding. Feel free to tinker with it http://www.alloscomp.com/bitcoin/old_calculator.php(Note that it works in khash not mhash like their new one, so for the hashrate of Bitcoins.lc, you would have to enter 600000000). As you can see, the 95th percentile already occurs at slightly after 9 hours. This round went past 99.999% @ 600,000,000,000 hashes per second after 19 hours p.s. This round did not actually happen, the administrators corrected the error. Nor has a 9+ million share round ever occurred on any pool as of today. Deepbit has had 5-6 million share rounds, bitcoins.lc and slush have had similar, but that's about it.

Seems they fixed it though, there were 3 blocks found within that 18 hour timeframe & the software bugged.
They just credited the missing blocks a few mins ago.

The current round should be mathematically impossible. The statistical probability of finding a block at 5.2*1566776 shares becomes 1 [100.00%]. However the site claims no block has been found after 5.6*1556676 [8717385 shares]

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess workstation cards may be involved.
FirePro, Tesla and Quadro cards are horrible for mining. A card faster than a 6990 doesn't exist. the 5870x2 ARES and a custom 6970x2 are roughly as fast as a 6990

So each machine has to output 66ghash/s.
Even if you fit 8x6990 in a MSI BB Marshall motherboard with extension cables for a total of 16 gpu's and somehow get it to work, that's only 6400mhash/s per rig, or 96ghash in total.
It would also cost over $90,000 dollars. A denser setup isn't possible at the moment; You can't get more than a theoretical 96,000mhash/s out of 15 machines with modern GPU's.

I thought of a more elegant way to illustrate my original point.
Let's say there are large groups of people who all play the lottery, with the promise to split their winnings if they win.
Saying that if these groups were taken down, the lottery would fail, is just as silly as saying that if pools go down, Bitcoin will fail.
Most people play the lottery alone. Most people don't mine bitcoins alone. Mining solo at this difficulty level *is* a lottery. Your chances of ever earning anything are very, very low.

The hash rate fluctuates between 31mhash/s and 35 in the video.
What's suspicious? Every single miner client out there does this. There is no such thing as a 100% stable hash rate. It will always slightly move up and down.
If you get a similar hash rate, then you have a very old ATI card (4350 or worse).

The hash rate has actually gone down massively today. Network total rate is at 5.4 blocks per hour.
Also, all the big pools have had insanely long rounds today (just look at deepbit or bitcoins.lc history in the last 24 hours). It *could* be luck, but if it is, it's a hell of a coincidence.
All of them have gone through the longest round in a month today. Even the small ones like triplemining.com are undergoing ridiculous rounds.

Two 6970s should have a higher hashing rate than one 6990. I wouldn't necessarily return them.
Not really, if you OC the 6990. You can get 410-430 mhash/s per core, about in line with what a single 6970 would get overclocked. Specs wise a 6990 is two full 6970 cores as well (1536 shaders each).

80 hours... are you freaking kidding me? This is just too painful to watch.
Just a very unlucky day in general. Even big pools are running into 6-10 million share rounds all of a sudden.

I only got into mining because I got bulk 5830's, 5850's and 6990's cheap (-30-40% under market price).
For example, 8x 5830's for $792 (2400mhash/s). 5x 6990 for $2600, (4000mhash/s). Bunch of sapphire 5850's xtremes at $99 each. There's of course PSU and mobo costs too, but IMO if you can get great deals, mining is still worth it.
Don't just go to Newegg and buy the most expensive thing. Look around, make phone calls and see if importers have some cheap ones.

Wow, that's complete BS.
If you want to set up a mining op quickly though, I'd keep the 2 cards and ask them to refund the remaining $1k dollars (assuming 800 bucks per 6990 and 300 per 6970) and start mining right away.
Then add the 6990 once they get them in stock & keep 200 bucks.

maybe divide big payments up into smaller transactions so you dont lose it all at once

Is there a version of those tools for ATI/AMD cards? It's just nice to test it out on locked ZIps,Rars I forgot passwords to from years ago to rescue my work files.
Just don't forget that cracking a .rar file takes a long time with a reasonable password. As I have found out. Remember.. Services that display "how many thousands/millions of years would it take to crack your password" are based on the compute performance of a typical single desktop cpu. It doesn't take in account an attacker with access to 1 TFLOPS or more GPU power 24/7. This sort of cluster can brute force 1000 billion combinations per second, about 2160 hours (3 months) to recover a 96-char password with alternating lower and uppercase characters, special symbols and numbers. 1 TFLOPS can be achieved with a farm of 196 radeon 6990's worth of hashing power. There are a few people with clusters this powerful mining all the time (maybe 2-3, Vladimir could have much more if he stopped renting his massive farms in the future)
