How much was this site sold for?
That's probably one of the most difficult questions to answer. Of course the agreement is confidential, however one thing I can say is that Jed is still looking over us for now and that I am engaged to continue and improve mtgox for the best of the whole community.
562  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mtgox is changing owners on: March 06, 2011, 12:30:14 AM
Hi everyone,

For information, mtgox issues can still be sent to the usual email address, no problem there.

Considering the recent activity around mtgox, this might not have been the best time, but I believe this'll work out. Other issues that will be adressed in priority includes providing a legal context around mtgox (legal stuff such as terms of services). This will include strong privacy policies, and the required policies so problems do not get out of hand, and increases in security (ability to limit withdraws via a sms validation, for example).

Anyway the goal is to keep mtgox up and running as it is right now, while adding missing features and ensuring it will last. For information mtgox is not directly managed by me, but by my own company, which will hire some staff to get mtgox improved.

Should you have any question you can send mails to info@mtgox.com or contact me on IRC (nick: MagicalTux) and I'll make sure to answer anything you need. If there's too many question I may add a FAQ about this.

Looks like ns1.theplanet.com/ns2.theplanet.com randomly reply sometimes with the right ip, and sometimes with the wrong ip. This is really troublesome.
564  Economy / Marketplace / Re: btcex.com now works with Japanese Yen (JPY) on: February 06, 2011, 05:56:22 AM
Has anyone used the JPY account posted on btcex.com?

SWIFT/BIC: SMBCJPJT
Account Number: 8457299423
Account Holder: Tibanne Co. Ltd.

None at this time (this account is being verified daily as this is my company, so I'll know if anyone ever uses it).

I'm in South Korea and I set up 2 machines running the client today. I see on the map that one of them has appeared. It's red on the map in the OP and white when I look at the google maps link.

If my client window says I have connections down at the bottom does that mean it will be green?

One machine is behind a firewall I don't have access to do anything to (work computer) and the other one isn't behind anything, so I think I should eventually see one green and one red point near my location. Am I understanding this right?

Make sure your firewall on the machine itself is configured to allow incoming connections on port 8333, then your machine will appear green. You'll get connections even if you didn't configure your firewall, but it's better to.

The map is "updated" every 30 minutes. If your node is white it may take some time until it is tested. If it's red it won't be tested again before at least 24 hours.

Very cool, are locations generally accurate? I'm not seeing myself, but I almost always have bitcoin open.

http://www.maxmind.com/app/faq#accurate (I'm using the free city database)
567  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin across the world on: December 18, 2010, 10:53:05 PM
so if someone is running the client in a location, what does the color show if:
* the client is running with "generate" turned off?
* the client is running with "generate" turned on?
* the client is NOT running at all?

We cannot know if a given client is currently generating.

However if the client is NOT running at all, the dot is red (and disappear within 3 hours)
568  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin across the world on: December 18, 2010, 08:46:23 PM
It means nodes that had not been tested for whether or not they accept connections. Red mean down, green mean up, according to MT.

And "down" means that either the node is down (and will be removed within 24 hours) or that it's not accepting connections from outside (in which case it will be kept here, but in status "down", until its ip changes)

MTux, make the dots bigger. I want to post this on a forum but you can hardly notice some points.
here you go!
570  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin across the world on: December 18, 2010, 06:16:38 PM
Just for fun I started gathering IPs reported by bitcoin clients and make a database of unique ips and test which ones are live, which ones are not.

Since there are ~1200 bitcoin connected to the irc channel I was assuming to find a similar value, but right now I'm still querying nodes and got over 6000 nodes (for now about 25% are accepting inbound connections).

Anyway since it's probably not telling you much, I transformed the ips in coordinates, and made a google kml file anyone can see in google maps (suggested by slush_cz)

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=https://smsz.net/btcStats/bitcoin.kml

UPDATE: Now the node color on google maps tells you if that node accept connections or not.
  • GREEN means the node has its firewall correctly configured and accept connections from other nodes
  • RED means we were unable to connect to the node (it is either down, or do not accept connections)
  • WHITE means the node is still in the queue, and will be checked soon
UPDATE 2: Now only nodes I heared about from other nodes within the last 3 hours are taken into account. The other nodes are excluded from the map and other stats (except versions)

You can also have a (json) overview of bitcoin versions across the network: https://smsz.net/btcStats/version (yep, still some 0.3.0 around)

PS: another json feed: https://smsz.net/btcStats/accepting ("up" nodes are node accepting connections from outside, "rate_accepting" is the current ratio between nodes accepting and not accepting connections)

Voilà j'ai créé quelques pages, et modifié la page d'acceuil.

J'espère que je suis bien dans l'esprit du truc.

Yep, j'ai ajouté des liens vers l'anglais pour les pages, et davux a collé sa FAQ Smiley
572  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Official Bitcoin Unicode Character? on: December 17, 2010, 05:41:41 PM
Hi,
I tried getting all the suggestions so far for a bitcoin symbol and have listed them there:
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Bitcoin_symbol

May be easier to add pros and cons there until the choice becomes obvious (or not). I didn't add all the possibilities listed in this thread (missing the 8-based ones), however you are free to.
573  Local / Discussions générales et utilisation du Bitcoin / Re: French on: December 17, 2010, 04:53:11 PM
hum...

Ok, after some finalizing discussions on IRC, it seems obvious that people willing to submit under WTFPL will not mind CC-by-3.0, however people who want attribution will mind WTFPL.

I'll be switching the license to CC-by-3.0 for https://bitcoin.it/
575  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Post your static IP on: December 17, 2010, 04:29:29 PM
Hi,

I'm digging this thread and bringing it back up to introduce the new fallback nodes list on bitcoin.it.

The list is parsed by a mediawiki bot every hour, and nodes are checked (are they up, are they up to date, etc).

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Fallback_Nodes

Explanations are given on how to add your own node in the list. I'll add the ability to poke tor nodes to the bot later. Nodes which are down for more than 24 hours will be removed from the list.

We could also do like meta and have some pages under WTFPL.

In fact being under WTFPL bars us from using content from the existing wiki, and some people seem to mind it. On the contrary I do not think anyone who would write content under WTFPL would have any objection to write it under CC-by-3.0.

Would be a shame if people (ie theymos) are not able to contribute to one of the wikis because of the license.

Hello tout le monde!

Pour information, le nouveau wiki communautaire bitcoin a une place prévue en français!

https://fr.bitcoin.it/

Pour l'instant y'a rien, mais un peu d'aide serait la bienvenue!
578  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Wiki on: December 17, 2010, 07:39:07 AM
I desire attribution for my contributions. WTFPL, at least, seems to suggest that I would be OK with people plagiarizing, which I am not. Copyright should be abolished, of course, but I don't want to encourage people to take my work without attribution.

There are probably legal problems with it. Compare it with the similar CC0 license:
http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/legalcode
One sentence is not going to cover all of the legal issues. Potentially someone could sue us for using our own stuff.

WTFPL is less restrictive than CC-A, so legally copying material from the Bitcoin wiki would require you to get permission from all page authors.

I prefer CC-A -- including a link back to the page is not a huge legal burden, and it clearly indicates that plagiarism is not acceptable. No one's going to sue anyone, anyway. I wouldn't mind CC0 or any of the more restrictive CC licenses.

CC-by makes sense for many people, I see how this can be interesting.

The intention of WTFPL is to show that you don't care a shit about copyright laws. At least that's my interpretation.

I don't even care about attribution. That why I asked MT to use WTFPL rather than anything else.

I guess you won't care if we thank you for your work. Anyway this whole license issue is a problem to copy content from the current wiki, so I believe the switch to CC-by-3.0 is pretty much obvious. If anyone has an objection, please state it here.
579  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Wiki on: December 17, 2010, 06:48:13 AM
WTFPL is not an appropriate license, in any case. It would have the same legal problems as declaring that something is in the public domain. It is also incompatible with the CC-A license used on the Bitcoin wiki.

Unlike "public domain", WTFPL explicitly states what you can or can't do. Its phrasing may be a bit crude, but as far as I know it does not have the legal problems "public domain" has (the FSF lawyers do not see any problem with that either).

If enough people believe the license is a problem, we can switch back to a CC license (since people who submitted content under WTFPL explicitly allow us to switch to another license), however switching from a CC license to WTFPL is impossible, that's why the initial choice was the broadest one.

Now this is a community wiki, so you can suggest a license change to CC-by or CC-by-sa and list your arguments.

The CC-by license on the bitcoin wiki is indeed an issue, however if all the contributors of this wiki (who are not that many) give their authorization, changing the license wouldn't be that complex. We need to list pros and cons for both cases. Smiley

Distribution to multiple servers is good. What do you think, should we keep the "Documentation" wiki, or link straight to bitcoin.it? I think the wiki might become better and more complete documentation than a separately maintained documentation page.
For the documentation wiki, I think we should wait until at least the same informations are available on bitcoin.it. It could be a good idea indeed to link directly there, in which case we might have to give priority to have an acceptable documentation on the new wiki.

We can also link the dokuwiki from the future documentation page while it is being put together.
