I am forum gold. Behold and speculate on my comedic value.
5642  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin at Starbucks (or anywhere) on: January 15, 2012, 05:48:09 PM
Actually, it's doing what bitcoins were meant to be used for--- as a tool for transferring value.

This is exactly what everyone should be doing, just like if someone handed you a rare coin or gold.

Aww....thread topic fail.

Lets collect some data, shall we? And to put this in perspective: They received 2814+ BTC by now.

Of course they have. Did you think they went into arbitrage trading flat broke? This is just an experiment. It will be over soon. If you're not comfortable with it, don't put money in that you can't afford to lose, as always.  Roll Eyes

Relax.  Those that gamble on bitcoin are not children - they know what they do and what are the risks.

I'm guessing their bitcoin client is crashed, see:

http://bitcoinmedia.com/merchant-developer-tutorial/

<?php
    require_once('jsonRPCClient.php');
    $bitcoin = new jsonRPCClient('http://username:password@127.0.0.1:8332/');
    # now check for appropriate funds in user account
    try {
        $username = ...
        if(isset($_SESSION['sendaddress']))
            $sendaddress = $_SESSION['sendaddress'];
        else {
            $sendaddress = $bitcoin->getnewaddress($username);
            $_SESSION['sendaddress'] = $sendaddress;
        }
        $balance = $bitcoin->getbalance($username);
    }
    catch (Exception $e) {
        die("<p>Server error! Please contact the admin.<p>");
    }

Whats with that code? Did you see it somewhere on bitscalpers site?
Which would suggest they at least have a bitcoind..

Less.
5648  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The risk on: January 15, 2012, 10:09:29 AM
If Bitcoin is to take off it needs to work to feel a bit more mainstream imo.

Roger that, I wholeheartedly agree.

Bill Gates said similar things about the Internet. We all know that the steamlined proprietary networks died and the hairy Internet made it.

That said, it'd be nice if they put some functions into the GUI menu that are available from the command line. Like an easy backup. It's 5 lines of QT calls, but someone has to put it in.

I vote for anu.  He apparently knows QT Tongue.

My, my, you sure are a QT.  Kiss
5649  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Bitcoin BIP 16 /P2SH/ is bad, your action is needed! on: January 15, 2012, 09:19:37 AM
TL;DR?

Bitcoins are growing up, people are making decisions that they need to make, while others are biting their nails.

For security purposes, bitcoin wallets need 2 keys-- at least-- and that point remains unargued.

How it would be effective for escrow however is beyond me considering that it wouldn't do anything other than provide a false sense of security, unless of course you made it 20 keys and trusted the opinions of all of those people (who knows, maybe that's the future of the internet? Wink)

Bottom line, Gavin is kind of a project leader, and as a fellow project leader I understand him when he makes a decision based on an interest in providing an actual result. Bureaucracy slows things down. Luke Jr is a also a project leader who doesn't want bitcoin development decisions being rushed into. I understand him when he brings these issues to the public as they are quite serious. Everything development related reflects on the entire bitcoin community.

So here's my two cents-- Gavin, at the risk of 'wasting your time', can't you have two separate developments going on and test them both for functionality? Isn't that what a project leader is supposed to do? Luke? Can't you just start working on the direction you'd like to go and present it in a way that could be agreed with?

You know, not everyone here on these forums is a bitcoind code wrangler, but that doesn't mean we couldn't all learn. Situations like these make me think I should get involved myself.
5650  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is there a pool like Luke-Jr's, but without Luke-Jr? on: January 15, 2012, 08:47:46 AM
Did you post this in the correct thread?

As ridiculous as my post may have seen since I did go a bit into a rant, I have a hard time believing anyone could look at this thread and not think of it as just more picking on Luke Jr. (For the record, don't know him, don't care).

And let me show you:

I've been using Eligius a long time now, and it is really designed good. Is there another pool that does not require registration but is not affiliated with Luke-Jr? An alternative, that is.

A) he knows the name of the pool he is a member of; and

B) has been there a long time

Why wouldn't he just ask "Are their any other pools like Eligius?", unless of course he was just trying to stir the hornets nest. No offense need be taken. I am just presenting my viewpoint.

OK, I see where you are coming from now since you aren't implying it anymore and just telling me directly!  Cheesy

Oh, I didn't take offense. When I said I was disturbed, I meant it felt like I was in the twilight zone when reading your post. After all, you do mention alt currencies for the first time in the thread as if we were having a discussion about them!

Honestly, I don't care about any of the Luke-Jr stuff. I just want the network to me more robust against DDOS, the 51% attack, and anything else you can think of that might rear it's ugly head. And that's why I stopped by to mention the advantages of P2Pool.

I've mentioned P2Pool in other threads about Luke-Jr as well, for what it's worth. Not because of anything Luke-Jr did, but because I don't think people should be so willing to give up their "vote" in the network so easily, regardless of who they are giving it to. And if Eligius was a P2Pool, what many have suggested happened, couldn't have happened. I've been very vocal about deepbit's size in the past as well, but I have no problem with [Tycho] what-so-ever (other than the fact that he allows his pool to grow so large when it causes a few concerns for the network).

+1 about Deepbit's size.
5651  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Donations on: January 15, 2012, 08:46:51 AM
I work for my money, and I pay for people's work. "Donations" is kind of pointless imo. Why donate even to the bitcoin client itself, when you could just charge the communty fees for development? Ever example of donations being useful can be met with an argument for how to earn money through work. Just my opinion.

Don't you love how highly biting, aggressive, taboo or politically incorrect topics related to people's businesses are started by newbies who are surprisingly well educated on the history of the businesses and forum presences despite having less than 5 posts, but whose questions are answered almost immediately by those with over hundreds of posts?

Not implying anything, just strikes me as odd that this happens moreso in topics of alt-currencies moreso than any other.

Did you post this in the correct thread? This is about mining pools, not alt-currencies.

Edit: Also, there was no "highly biting, aggressive, taboo, or politically incorrect" speech in this entire thread! If the OP has an issue with Luke-Jr, he certainly didn't take the chance to bring it up, and even commented on how well Eligius is designed. The more I read your post, the more it disturbs me. And for what it's worth, I answered because I've been promoting P2Pool as much as I possibly can, because I believe the mining situation is far too centralized for the health of Bitcoin, which I do hope still exists far into the future (Bitcoin that is, not the mining situation).

Honestly doesn't even sound that good to begin with

WHOO BUST YOUR ASS FOR WEEKS/MONTHS AND GET 25% OFF!! WHOOO

Big fuckin deal, worth minimum wage, buy two PS3s instead of the one you could have gotten with Lockerz

That's true on its face, but it's more about lack of opportunity. The people who use lockerz are statistically mostly 12 years old. There isn't much opportunity to get a job and the owners are exploiting that. Like I said, marketing genius.

Yeah I basically figured it out after a week of thinking about. I think the key to making it so big and profitable was making it invite only at the start. Not only do people feel like they need to join cause possibly there is free shit, but also the idea if you don't get in soon you won't get anything. Also making it easy to get the points was a great idea.

As was the inevitable inflation and value of points dropping with time.

Lockerz accounts are essentially worthless, an awesome scam pulled off by one of the best in marketing men of all time.

They fed 5% of their userbase with actual products in order to create hype and interest for themselves, then abused that userbase by allowing only 10 items out of 100,000+ members to be redeemed in a period of 60 seconds.

The reason you are here is because you are a part of perpetuating that scam, whether knowingly or otherwise.
