5781  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-01-02] HitBTC freezes customer funds before proof of keys event on: January 05, 2019, 12:35:15 PM
Banks haven't been doing anything else throughout their existence with people's funds, so why should crypto exchanges be different? Most of them are even more shady....

It is an interesting area as I presume there are no legal grounds to demand full backing, it's just assumed by users. That being the case I fully support anything that rams home how precarious certain exchanges are and proof of keys is the way to do it.

It looks like no one gave a shit. They're going to continue needing raping before they do take it seriously, though it should be clear enough by now.

5782  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 05, 2019, 02:25:26 AM
That's basically what I think. Being my idea of high 80%+

Yeah, once $10K is reached that would mean a great deal of confidence as you say.

There'll be many, many more people watching intently this time around compared to besting $1000 once again.
5783  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 05, 2019, 02:13:41 AM
Just curious... What you guys would say is the probability YOU give to Bitcoin to be over $10.000 at any moment during the next 4 years? honestly.

High. But I think it's going to be long road with much adversity. Despite it being half the ATH, I think a return to five figures will be the equivalent of getting back over $1000 and that was a three year grind. It'll be a huge hump that needs taking out and once it is a great deal of confidence will flow back in from the outside.
5784  Other / Archival / Re: Jordan Peterson BTC Donations on: January 05, 2019, 01:49:43 AM
This 'deplatforming' will lead to crypto exchanges doing the exact same thing. Indeed they do already - https://mobile.twitter.com/getongab/status/1081255271429681153

Exchanges will be the new gatekeepers in a way that deffo isn't the spirit of BTC. Let's hope P2P and decentralised exchanges become more of a thing. Of course the ideal scenario is the end of the need to cash out at all.

5785  Economy / Speculation / Re: January...The Next Few Weeks Will Be Crucial on: January 05, 2019, 12:46:30 AM
ETF was delayed so many times that people are tired of it and will not overreact if it gets postponed again. I know that SEC will not be able to delay it anymore but a denial will mean another delay because I don't think they will give up after that. They will make amends and file again and we will start all over and get delayed for another year. Boring!

In those circumstances hopefully people will have learnt and put it to the back of their minds. Doubt they will though. I totally forgot the Winklevoss appeal was a thing until it was exterminated for the final time last year.

I expect there'll be further bypasses of formal ETFs like GBTC and Bakkt that'll make an ETF approval relatively moot. It could be many years before there's a yes and no one may care all that much.
5786  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-01-03] Bitcoin ‘Too Scammy, Volatile’ for Mainstream Adoption: Analyst on: January 05, 2019, 12:39:29 AM
Man says 'I don't know very much'. Man says 'listen to me'.

Riiight.

It is obvious that it's not suitable for most people and it's going to be quite some time before it's a safe proposition for most people rather than us outliers, but I doubt many of the people using BTC in shithole economies are doing it for fun.
5787  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Max Keiser Says Bitcoin Will Become the World’s Reserve Currency on: January 05, 2019, 12:32:27 AM
i definitely agree with him on this point. bubbles are extremely distracting---people start focusing more and more on price and less on technological use cases and the ecosystem. it's during the bear markets that companies and infrastructure quietly get built and bitcoin's utility improves.

however, i'm skeptical of the "world reserve currency" narrative. i'm not saying it's impossible, but we'd really need to see a complete breakdown of fiat currency systems at a time when bitcoin was ready and tested as a robust alternative to the current system.

Trouble is many of those carefully built companies die during the withering of the next bubble. If I were a VC I'd plan accordingly. Not many seem to.

It's possible BTC might end up considered a reserve currency by real people rather than governments. There doesn't have to be one and one only.
5788  Economy / Speculation / Re: BITCOIN in 2029 on: January 05, 2019, 12:17:45 AM
I am a believer in Satoshi's prediction of Bitcoin's volume either being huge or nothing 20 years after its creation. We're either going a long way up from here or it's going to die. The former works considerably better for me at least. 10 years is a lot of room to either get entrenched or usurped.
5789  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Be careful, Google knows more about you than you can imagine! on: January 04, 2019, 07:33:39 PM
I'm so miserly with battery and data that 99% of the time my phone is in airplane mode and certainly no GPS. I mainly use it as a book reader and take the occasional photo. I don't want to talk to anyone with it. I'm sure that doesn't stop them attempting to scoop up info where they can.

It's the covert listening that intrigues me most. There are lots of people who are adamant that the things they discuss out loud in passing near their phones turn up in ads a short time later.

Happy 10th birthday, bitcoin.

Don't think I can be bothered to read mainstream coverage any more, especially the Guardian which is paternalist shite.

The amount of energy people spend pointlessly shouting at BTC could power transactions for several years. Nothing they shout or do will change the outcome. It's out of their hands. Why not go off and find something more fun to do?
5791  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 04, 2019, 12:54:01 PM
Have never dealt with an issue of this magnitude before, I am at a loss how best to proceed.

You have nature's friction sliding out of you every day. Smear it all over.
5792  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-01-02] HitBTC freezes customer funds before proof of keys event on: January 04, 2019, 12:36:23 AM
Going on chain activity it seems this event was ignored by users. There were no spikes anywhere. It does have more visibility than in previous years so I hope it grows as an idea.

As for HitBTC, their rep is toxic enough for this not to make it any worse than it already is. How somewhere like that still has any relevance is beyond me.

Is there anyone who can buy a copy of The Times for me please?

I can nip down the shop and see if one's still there. Would it bring you joy?

Yes it would bring me much joy.

Just obtained one just for you. Lemme know how to get it to you.

Why the  Kiss Kiss Kiss with every  announcement?

Everyone loves a peck on the cheek to help their news go down.
5796  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 03, 2019, 01:59:45 PM
I'm getting a few copies bought... Wonder if their 'sales figures' get a bump today.

Will it not end up like those 'collectible' coins and plates they sell in the back of newspapers?

I bought all 1000 'editions' of an airbrushed plate with a wolf howling on it from the Mail on Sunday. I smashed all but one and sent the sole survivor to Christies expecting it to raise millions. The auctioneer used it as an ashtray and told me to fuck off.

It's the stuff no one bothered to collect at the time that winds up worth something. A nice little souvenir all the same.

Instead of Chartbuddy bumping it every hour, is engaging It the new sign of thread deadness?

It's just as mechanical and uncreative.

So what will people be doing at 18.15 GMT tomorrow, the exact moment of birth?

I might bail out a bank.

With Doge.

Low-dose radiation from A-bombs elongated lifespan and reduced cancer mortality relative to un-irradiated individuals

Interesting.

I celebrated my 110th birthday in Nagasaki on a rather unfortunate day. I've been wondering what the hell's been going on ever since.
