Computers are absolutely crucial to humanity's survival..thus I'd say whatever pollution the produce either directly or indirectly (externalities) is completely justified....now pardon me while I add more power hungry computers to my hashing cluster..*pets mining rigs*
Oh god allinvain I'm a bit sick over here, and reading that post almost made me cough up a lung! Hilarious stuff.

Who went and made you moderator again?
And I don't care if I lose my power. Why don't you simply give it up then? You have made it quite clear right now that you do not care to keep your position.

You should. This isn't "your" forum.
And I don't care either way. Who went and made you moderator again?

* kiba shrugs I don't really care. You should. This isn't "your" forum. Are you high right now or something? Go take a break and step outside or something please...

I considered currency competition between various bitcoin blocks an economic issue.
Hrmmm, and I considered it to be more of a bitcoin-centric/generic issue pertaining to everybody who owns or participates in Bitcoin, not just those who are interested in the economics of it. What to do?! :S Maybe we could have a forum process of waiting for a few forum readers to suggest to the moderator(s) that a post be moved... that way it is somewhat more of a democratic process. Inb4 I hate democracy -kiba I think that that thread was fine where it was. Kiba, calm down with the moving man. People put stuff where it goes roughly, that's all you can hope for.Exactly my point. I have participated in many forums in my time and it is quite rare that a thread actually gets moved. Usually if you blatantly post in the wrong section you will be called out by a few members for doing so and you will not do so again. If the forum sections are too vague/limited then that is not my fault. Don't get me wrong though kiba, I appreciate you doing your job as moderator of this forum, I simply suggest we democratize the moving process a bit and get some more input rather than just one man determining what should go where. EDIT: Lol, and now this move two minutes later? Are you kidding me? My post about possibly being addicted to Bitcoin is more related to the "bitcoin discussion" area than it is "off topic"? I was purely joking, obviously...?

Muah ah ah ah. Wow, we would not get along! I am a tree hugging hippy apparantly. A left leaning libertarian. On par with Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama apparently

Ok, most of my bitcoins have been recover. I had to wait for the index to be built at block 120,000 or something.
Guys, the lesson I've learnt is: do not underestimate the importance of backups!
Lol, I am surprised that you did!

So I have spent almost 48 full hours logged into and participating in this forum since I discovered bitcoin around mid march of 2011. Although I feel as though the forum's counter is slightly off, probably under valued! I can't seem to get enough of Bitcoin. I try to tell myself "it's ok, you can take a break and watch some tv now or have a drink" - but I don't, which is odd. Anybody else experiencing these addictive properties of Bitcoin? I fear that I might start experiencing withdrawal symptoms or something if this forum ever gets DDOS'd!

Me neither, but I am damn glad this post didn't get any replies. I don't want a bunch of stoners in charge of creating the currency of the future

For the record, I realize that this topic should be in "meta", but nobody reads that section... I just created this forum topic in this "Bitcoin Discussion" section, and it was instantly moved to the economics section: http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=7774.0I fail to see how the topic is more related to the "economics" of bitcoin than general bitcoin discussion itself? I was talking about the security/acceptance of the bitcoin blockchain, not the price or cost of anything. That and it seems like there have been like 10 posts moved in the last 10 minutes...

I know namecoins are only "meant" for registering domain names... but what if people start to use them like bitcoins? Or is that impossible since there is an unlimited supply of namecoins? iirc
It's very much possible, but at the same time it's not a bad thing. Not for anybody but the early adopters and their current bitcoin wallet value I suppose.

This is a complaint I hear pretty often: Unfortunately the developer of bitcoin has set a maximum of bitcoins to ever be created, which will make this currency highly deflationary. The more users that will want to use bitcoin, the more they will have to compete for the use of a limited amount of coins. Coins will become worth more and more, meaning less bitcoins will buy more product. Those who will profit from this deflation are going to be the “first come” users, those who created bitcoins when it was still relatively easy.
I believe bitcoin is an interesting proof-of-principle for a user-generated currency, yet it is not a currency that can guarantee price stability. Because of the fixed total amount of coins to be created, the currency cannot be adapted to a growing market. I think I have a pretty good understanding of why the bitcoin generation scheme is better, but I'm not going to discuss that now, my theories haven't convinced anyone as far as I know. I propose we try it out. Modify the Bitcoin code to simply continue generating the same number of coins/time forever. You could even call it a time limited currency. At any given time there will be a limit on how many coins exist, maybe this will be god enough to lure some people who are on the limited/unlimited fence. It is still surely better than a centrally issued currency where we can't tell at what rate money will be printed or what the distribution rule will be. The infrastructure that exists already for Bitcoin can mostly be converted in minutes and this applies to all infrastructure that will be created in the future. A BTC/TC exchange site would be trival to set up and be virtually riskless legally. This would let Timecoin piggyback on all the existing and future BTC to state currency exchange sites. Just go to a BTC/TC exchange then take your BTC to MtGox or wherever. If it catches on there will be direct exchanges I'm sure. My point is that people don't have to be really really devoted to this idea to make it happen like the developers of bitcoin are. They only have to think that this one difference is even a slight improvement, everything else is already available, practically free. There are even a bunch of miners already set up that could switch on a dime. If Timecoin allows for a growing market and Bitcoin does not we'll know for sure and don't need to worry about theory. Empiricism! Sounds kind of like namecoin, does it not?

So in about seven hours the difficulty will change. Where do you see it going next? It is going to be around 156000 today.
My guest.... 170000
My guess.... 222222 You know you can bet on this on http://bitbet.org? Unfortunately that site is down and will be for some weeks as it seems due to hw fail. I would never bet on something that can be manipulated by another bettor.

this happens every time the difficulty changes.
I sure hope you're right
