581  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL refunds works flawlessly and fast on: October 30, 2012, 09:24:31 PM
So far, few people have been requesting refunds. That's going to change as more and more delays happen they start shipping.

FTFY.  Roll Eyes

+1 for D-Links and Belkins. I recommend them without hesitation.

Well that answers one question... if you actually worked for comcast you wouldn't like either of those manufacturers.

583  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is this the beginning of the end to PayPal? on: October 30, 2012, 08:53:00 PM
Is this the beginning of the end for PayPal? No. Paypal has billions of dollars to higher the talent they need. Apple is going threw a restructuring of their executives, does this imply the beginning of the end for Apple. Not likely.

To suggest that Paypal's restructuring is going to lead to the demise of Paypal is a logical fallacy. Just because A causes B and B causes C doesn't mean that A causes C.

Actually - you're incorrect on both companies.

Paypal's layoffs are a sure sign that the company is struggling. Now given that they're enmeshed with ebay they probably won't go away entirely, but I'd be downright shocked if we don't see them being reduced to 'one of many' on the billing side of ebay within the next year or two.

Apple's on the way out. Job's is gone - and Apple's already too greedy to survive much longer. They'll ride idevices for another few years before the tech ages enough that they can't just reskin it and call it an upgrade, and then itunes will carry them for 5 or 10 more years, since people who've invested in purchases there won't walk away from it quickly.

But with Google jumping into the tablet market (and frankly destroying apple on cost, usability and tech) and microsoft redesigning windows to power handheld devices it won't be long before apple is exactly what it's always been before - 'advanced hardware at time of release, but no innovation and no ability to adapt to the marketplace' - aka it will settle to 15% of the market again.
584  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Project will be making a major announcement in September on: October 29, 2012, 02:01:14 AM
Technically, if you want to use GAAP, Bitcoin issued 21 million coins back in 2009 and hasn't done anything since then. Wink

Exactly.  GAAP is irrelevant to Bitcoin.  Unlike some currencies, Bitcoin isn't a debt-based, fractional-reserve, leveraged pseudo-money that requires fine-grained, exact time-based tracking in order to prevent fraudulent third-order effects (like that ever even worked, anyways;  high-frequency Bitcoins here we come).

You don't need to pay taxes on Bitcoin transactions.  In fact, you shouldn't.  And you shouldn't try to use Bitcoin as a means of transferring value denominated in inherently flawed, poorly-accounted-for, debt-based, fractional-reserve, fraudulently-leveraged pseudo-monies, either.

That's pretty obviously what this request is about.  And it's not even remotely in any Bitcoin users' interest to help make that possible.

In addition to this opinion (which I entirely agree with btw), is that none of these issues should be addressed by the ref.client - store the blockchain however you'd like to, mine it to calculate timestamps on transactions you're interested in. The vast majority of users don't need this functionality and probably don't even know why they don't want it.

585  Other / Off-topic / Re: New SC Little Single better than SC Single ? on: October 25, 2012, 05:10:40 AM
Hi, it seems the new Little Single (30Ghash) is better then the old SC Single 60Ghash, here's why:

1. Better value for money: 1 x 60Ghs Single = $1299, 2 x 30Ghs Singles ($649*2=$1298)
2. Better redundancy: If 1 x 60Ghs Single fails then you are down by 60Ghs, if one of the two 30Ghs Singles fails, then you are down by only 30Ghs
3. Even more redundancy: with 2 x Little SC Singles you get 2 power bricks.

I am personally disappointed that BFL now allows to upgrade the Japaleno orders to Little Singles, but does not allow the Standard Single to be changed into Little Singles orders.

-----------------------------------
Edited the numbers value mistake
-----------------------------------

You are so full of fail.

1) 2 Little Singles vs 1 SC Single is the difference of $1! One freaking dollar over a 1.3K USD investment? Who cares?
2) More parts =/= more redundancy. It just means more points of failure.
3) Same thing. If BFL has a 2% failure rates for their PSUs (I just made that number up), then you're twice as likely to get one that fails.

And as someone else said, you're also now looking at added costs of USB hubs, and space constraints.

Don't forget the added shipping cost. Additionally, the weakest is going to your usb hub. assume you're looking at 10 littles vs 5 singles. If your hub dies - maybe you have 6 usb on the motherboard. half your hash down until you've replaced that hub. If you keep replacements on hand, then you've driven the initial cost up. If you don't, then you're better off with the singles, because at least you probably plug all 5 into the mb and still have a port for a keyboard to launch your mining software.
586  Other / Off-topic / Re: [Announcement] Butterfly Labs on: October 25, 2012, 04:44:02 AM
and if you upgrade now, you can bet you'll be in the later rounds. Smiley  but please by all means dont order any more.. as a matter of fact, maybe you should cancel your current order... if you have one..

I've just got a 3 singles being upgraded (2000 ish order numbers) --- not doing the rest until it's inhouse production. I'm planning on getting a couple of sc rigs (or maybe a lot of bASIC depending on power numbers). Even with BFLs current numbers, bASIC is still more hash/$. But there is some added cost, due to not getting power bricks with them and having to rig up a stack or mounting board.

It doesn't make sense right now to keep piling on with with pre-orders. Unless your goal is to diversify by ordering from different makers. At this point might as well wait until they're in the wild and see what actual numbers are.
587  Other / Off-topic / Re: [Announcement] Butterfly Labs on: October 25, 2012, 02:03:17 AM
The word "assemble" can be misinterpreted. Soldering components to the PCB? Or putting the PCB (with all components already soldered) together with a cooler into a case? My guess is BFL's first batch will be soldered by the same place that did their FPGA boards, and BFL will put the boards together with coolers in cases in their own facility.
That's my impression too, but I think their end goal is to be able to do both, without any outside assembly at all.

The confirmation that the existing foundry would be used for the first wave of ASICs has forced me to delay upgrading the rest of my fpgas. The QC at that place is just sloppy - so chips that aren't flush.

I don't really think I'd want a rig that comes from there... hopefully they'll get fully in house before the second round... up the quality a bit.
588  Other / Off-topic / Re: Petition: BFL SC Single should be 65Ghash and not 60Ghash on: October 25, 2012, 01:58:43 AM
Wouldn't it be hilarious if the 30GH units were identical in every way to the 60GH units, except that there are 4 processors instead of 8... which could be manually placed if you could get a hold of them.

Actually I am pretty sure that's how they will look like. They could even be completely identical from the outside, the only difference being the  30Hh/s unit has some faulty cores disabled.

That's much more likely - little single is the way to get rid of under-performing singles... disable some acis - downclock to get the right hash rate... or if a chip isn't stable at the 60gh range, just underclock it by 50% and sell it for half price.

considering the falling cost of hardware

I see what you did there...

I can't think of anything more fun than firing some old radio equipment and knocking drones out of the sky.

590  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Anyone think Ron Paul could win 3% of the popular vote? on: October 23, 2012, 01:24:10 PM
Is it that truth is spoken and appeal is made to reason that you think is lunacy?

Or perhaps you are deluded enough to think his appeal to allow competitive currencies would threaten your position?

Give us something more please Smiley

No. It's his manner that makes him come off as crazy. Listen to anything where RP is speaking live... half the time he sounds perfectly sane and the other half he sounds like he's senile. That's the reason people think he's crazy, because of the 'drift off' and him losing his train of thought.

591  Economy / Economics / Re: Defaltionary Spiral -- Is there a way to make this workout? (hoarding bitcoins) on: October 23, 2012, 01:15:30 PM
That's a good point, if BTC's price can rise continuously, then it is very reasonable that everything paid by BTC will get at least 15% discount

If everything is cheaper in bitcoins everyone will buy bitcoins before spending driving the price to even more maddening heights!

edit: And don't tell me it will be canceled by the merchants unloading them because why would merchants lose 15% just to turn around and get fiat!?

Not entirely canceled by merchants cashing out... what I'd expect to see is they routinely cash out enough to cover costs and save the remaining bitcoins. Eventually, they'll be able to buy from their suppliers in btc and they'll stop changing it to fiat in general. . .

592  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Don't secure the internet, it needs crime on: October 23, 2012, 01:08:26 PM
Yah - this guy doesn't understand much at all.

Crime doesn't stimulate anything. . . see 'broken windows fallicy'

Also he's incorrect about saying it isn't scalable. Linear costs very scalable - having a fixed cost per user/customer is measurable and easy to define a business case for or against. Most service industry business is linear and scalable... see 'premium tech support'
593  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Donate to Gary Johnson in BITCOINS on: October 23, 2012, 12:56:37 PM
Nah that's ok.

Gary has a serious marketing issue. He's the poster child for fiscal conservatives pretending to be libertarian, although he's at least honest about not being a libertarian. He missed the republican nomination and shouldn't run at all (if he's ethical) because any votes he takes from romney lends to obama getting a second term.

594  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Anyone think Ron Paul could win 3% of the popular vote? on: October 23, 2012, 12:46:28 PM
I think RP is a non-starter. He's just too crazy, too old and too out of touch with the modern age.

I actually feel bad about him pushing some good ideas (like flat tax) because it tends to scare the moderates to the point that they dislike the idea...

IMO RP supporters need to get over it, write him letters, convince him to fund an articulate younger candidate that shares the core values but someone who'll be able to speak without sounding like a loon.

595  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Anyone think Ron Paul could win 3% of the popular vote? on: October 23, 2012, 01:17:07 AM
I'm pretty sure he would except most of his 'supporters who would actually vote for him' are probably in mental clinics and the like.

Ron Paul is basically a death association tool for the mainstream. He's a total loon who just happens to "believe in" some good ideas in addition to everything else. If RP really wanted to help the ideas he supposedly believes in, he'd sit quietly in the background and pay so someone more respectable could present those ideas.

597  Other / Off-topic / Re: why not pump and dump those jerks? on: October 22, 2012, 03:43:28 AM
Oh and you can take all your pro-drug bullshit and shove it because here's the absolute truth.  Drugs are for people to unhealthily deal with their problems and as a temporary replacement for dealing with actual psychological problems.  All that BS about it being really healthy and an okay thing to do and respectable people use them and they don't really damage your health are basically on the same level as people's excuses when they get a speeding ticket.  People can justify anything they know they shouldn't be doing when they know they're wrong.  Keep living in pretend land though if that works for you.

Good people break bad laws. That is true of speeding and of drug use.

Legally wrong doesn't equate with morally wrong.

Pump&Dump is morally wrong - drug use isn't.
598  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTB] BFL Single for $500 on: October 22, 2012, 12:00:55 AM
heh - won't de-rail your thread with a bidding war - Just don't pay more than BFL sticker price for them.
599  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: 1 BFL Single rev. 3 on: October 21, 2012, 09:57:09 PM
You'll get the same offer I've given elsewhere - 550, and you pay shipping.

*Never pay full price for used hardware.
600  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTB] BFL Single for $500 on: October 21, 2012, 09:56:16 PM
I'd buy em for $550 - no higher.
