No, sorry Ski72....

You need something like this:

wonder if that is the same size as a cpu cooler mounting bracket?

Any design ideas are very welcome!

In my experience with KNC's 28nm hardware,  the primary thing stopping overclocking/better performance, was heat management.  The best solution was to make sure the underside of the board is cooled as well... even just placing a high speed fan on the bottom of the boards worked wonders.  I suspect that the neptune will be harder to overclock (the female pci-e connector and VRM's seem pushed hard on normal clock speeds, for one),  but having some sort of mounting solution to better cool the top and bottom of the board might be a good place to start. You could do this by having the metal sheet that you mount it raised slightly, and place vents underneath the boards (or cut little asic sized holes) to give room for some high powered fans on the bottom.  An even better idea might be to mount the boards upside down,  and give a place to mount fans on the top of the sheet, with holes in the sheet to allow air to go through.

If one were watercooling these boards,  I suspect that mounting them on their side might work really well also.  That way you could put, say,  a nepton 280L on the top side of the board,  and have a high powered air cooling solution on the other side/both sides to keep the VRM's and that PCI-e port cool.

Just some thoughts...

or if their was a picture of the bottom of the board...you could plan out one big heatsink for the bottom that would raise it up and then you could just put a high powered fan in front and would cool both top n bottom at same time...or just put copper vrm heatsinks on top n bottom like i did n use raisiers like i did...but i fear with the already high heat...you need above n beyond just the small heatsinks...unless maybe if you use server grade fans lol

could also just solder another female pcie connector on the bottom couldn't ya? idk anything bout that thou

kinda curious if that first nep. guy how his vrms are holding out? seeing any black smd caps yet?
585  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Hacking The KNC Firmware: Overclocking on: June 24, 2014, 12:12:59 AM
This is probably off topic so please forgive me. My KNC Jupiter case is all scratched up and looks like hell. I was wondering if anyone has powder coated their case? I called up a company and got a quote for $60 to do a flat black exterior power coat. I would remove all fans and modules and give them the case. What do people here think about the idea? Please don't hate on me  Smiley

i don't think anyone has done that...but why would you still be using the case? you get so much better temps outside the case Smiley

I don't think its an attack on eligius...luck is down on guild n slush too...unless they are attacking all the other pools too

588  Other / Archival / Re: Pictures of your mining rigs! on: June 23, 2014, 12:04:29 AM
0.17 BTC / day using what hardware? or did you buy hashing power and thats it?

so if its not profitable why all these guys have those mining rigs? xD

i currently have 6th/s online...2 th/s hosted for bout 260/mth...I just choose to mine whether or not i make a profit on the coin..i pay the power bill with my hard earned money and save coin in hopes of one day bitcoin takes off and i'm rich Grin a poor man can dream can't he? hehe and i get to help the network n try and decentralize it abit...but i fear KNC and big other mega farms will centralize it and it'll all come crashing down Sad oh well...i got my profit outta btc so this is all play money i guess...could go either way...won't hurt me none

As of last block:              0.061xxxxx BTC
Estimated Change:    +0.0087xxxx BTC
Estimated Total:              0.070xxxxx BTC

         Hashrate Average      Weighted Shares
12 hours   3,516.35 Gh/s          35368448
3 hours   3,728.03 Gh/s           9416704

Can someone please explain this?
I have been maintaining my hashrate average always @ 3.5 to 3.7, but in the last 2-3 days I noticed my estimated change drops like a bad habit.
In the last 9 blocks pool received; with maintaining the hasrate average of 3.5 to 3.7, my estimated total is only 0.070xxxx!
Also in the last payout, I was supposed to receive ~0.30xxxx BTC, but only 0.26xxxx BTC was received, which is not much concern.
What is concern me is, if the pool is punishing me for whatever the case might be!  It seems like my estimated changes is the same as PPLNS or less these days!

addy your mining with?
591  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Swedish ASIC miner company kncminer.com on: June 22, 2014, 07:21:00 PM
i find it funny that everyone is so surprised knc did everyone like they did...can you blame them? could you keep greed monster at bay to be loyal to your customers? i doubt it...then ya say well they'll lose all their customers...don't think their worried about that when they now have their own farm and don't need us anymore...this will happen to all asic companies...greed monster always wins and customers always lose...soon it'll be centralized currency and then poof there goes bitcoin....and all the asic companies will shoot themselves in the foot...but not before making out like bandits so i guess they really won't care about that...imho

well it'll be great to see the ddos'ers go after knc now if they do...and if they don't well maybe its knc who is doing the attacks lmao
592  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Hacking The KNC Firmware: Overclocking on: June 22, 2014, 06:15:01 PM
found the problem asic...silly me was looking at wrong side...turns out it is a board...while putting together the new setup i kinda lost my balance on step ladder and leaned on one module Sad doh...oh well least it still hashing some...dam me Sad

I can vouch for the stability.  My miner has been running since 6/16 with no problems.

Although I might be looking to sell my miner soon...

zyhsu815: Can I transfer my hosted miner to someone else?

no problem, you can sell the miner any time, just send me hosting pool and account, don't forget it is your hosting station.

What happened?
You want to sell the miner already?

got scared for roi? idk i haven't felt scared after this purchase...the OP seems trustworthy...ppl order miners and they get the HW they paid for...simple as that
594  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Hacking The KNC Firmware: Overclocking on: June 22, 2014, 12:43:12 AM

Here is how I did it.

I could see a difference but cannot reach 1.5T per 6 boards.
I am on 1.25T.

My ambient is 35C.

With proper cooling and 1.01-padrino FW you should be able to reach 1.5 TH/S. My modules have heatsinks on the VRM's and I have fans blowing on the bottom of each board.

Not sure how to change the date on the stats page, but I just took this screenshot.

Whats your ambient?

Also, can you post a screenshot of the advanced page with the vrm temps?

Thanks.

ambient is room temp 70F  the other 3 look the same...well except the non working one Sad
595  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Swedish ASIC miner company kncminer.com on: June 21, 2014, 11:39:48 PM
anyone have a idea of why a controller would all a sudden ramp up volts on vrms? I've tried everything i can think of to try n get this module back up n running...and its not the module cause i swapped it out for another and same problem...all i did was rearrange to a new setup and now i have this problem...tried different plug on psu..tried different psu all together...the spot that is messing up is a new solder connector to make it a 6 mod controller...even redid the solder and no dice...what could i have done to piss it off?

I can get 3 cores to stay on @ 1000mhz and -0.1245...but the 4th will ramp up volt turn off, come back on at half then after a bit ramp back up n turn off etc...that seems low volts for 1000mhz and no cores are off...if i try a higher OC it'll go back to usually 2 ramp up n 2 work fine...it'll also flip which 2 work or ramp...the higher the oc the faster the ramp up n shut off...it was fine at 0x335 n 0.000 volts Sad I just don't get it...it was working fine for few weeks Sad anyone? I'll tip ya if i get working module again...oh even tried different wire too...wish i had another 6 module nov. jup to try it out

also get fault 16 n fault 81 on bertmod sometimes...but i don't see how it could be the module since i've tried a different one
596  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Hacking The KNC Firmware: Overclocking on: June 21, 2014, 08:11:37 PM
Underneath??

ya just picture the copper heatsinks on the bottom...don't really need a picture for that Tongue well the heatsinks will help even more on bottom too...spec. with neptunes since they are already oc'd so much it'll help you get the most outta it i think

you can't do both i don't think...ya the plate is alittle hot, but the reason its hot is cause the vrms are screaming hot...i really don't think its sucking up the heat from the vrms..i think its hot just from being around the vrms...oh and those gray things block air flow and trap heat in...and so does the case Cheesy hope this helps

also i made the mistake of leaving the grey pad on 4 of my modules and only been ran for few weeks like that but you can see the damage it did...the caps are dark...i mean almost black now Sad so i picture in a week or so with all those neptunes heating up, all vrms will be toast and probably break...that grey thing does nothing but heat up the vrms more...or maybe it just transfers the heat to the smd caps...idk but if i was a neptune owner i wouldn't be running them in a knc designed case...they may make a good 28nn chip but they suck at designing cases or heat management

Thanks for the info.... Now I think of it: the plate is heating up from the Tower (and ASCI chip) as well... but removing the plate will also tumble down the Tower >> that's a major DIY project...

or you can try and do what someone else said is remove the grey pad and use some paste and the metal bracket directly on top of vrms...dunno if the screw will screw all the way down thou...

i urge all neptune miners to not use the grey thermal pad n metal thing on top...i'm willing to guess that this will fry out your vrms way quicker...i left that grey pad on my nov. mods and oc'd it and the smd caps are now almost black...so imagine what this will do to your unit with even higher power vrms and heat...just a warning to ya'll

That's not easy at all. ... This because the large aluminum plate has an |_|_| shape (3 fingers).  The middle-finger is holding the Tower, the rest is shaped over the VRM's......  removing the plate, needs some other plate to fasten the Tower.

well after a few days, keep an eye on the smd caps and see if i'm right or not Smiley not trying to spread FUD, just trying to help ppl not fry out their expensive units...it wouldn't surprise me none that knc tested these units and saw this is what was gona happen and shipped them like it anyways...

Are you willing compensate Neptune owners for the damage that may occur resulting from people taking your advice ?

point taken, didn't think about that...edited my post, Thanks

*snip*

Here is how I did it.

I could see a difference but cannot reach 1.5T per 6 boards.
I am on 1.25T.

My ambient is 35C.

that is why...you thought the chips needed the cooling when they don't...the fans blowing on bottom n top will get you 1.5th/s per 6 or close to it...my 6 were doing 1.436th/s cause i had 1 vrm that didn't like to go that high and would drop out...now putting together my new system i messed up my controller board Sad 1 module is all wonky now and the fans blowing in front still get air flow thur heatsink...my chip heatsink isn't even that hot

and wow link for those heatsinks? wish i got those instead...they are huge...if you move those fans down like mine you'd get more then 1.5th/s cause you could push'em faster i bet
