triple check all your spellings in the seed

This! Are you sure the seed you used is correct (spelling and order) and for the correct wallet (electrum) as well as version (1.9.Cool?
5902  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Attaching value/deeds to the Blockchain on: September 11, 2015, 01:42:11 PM
-snip-

these ideas are just great and should be implemented the sooner the better. also will's should be on the blockchain too.

Why do you (both) think more data will lead to more value of the currency that is in direct competition to the same storage space? The available space on the bitcoin blockchain is currently limited to 1MB per 10 minutes (on average) and we already have a very unhealthy discussion how to fix this. Adding more fuel into this fire is not a good idea, in my opinion.

With all that being said, the bitcoin blockchain is used for data that has next to nothing to do with transactions, but I dont think its raising the value in any way nor do I think there is a reason do discuss whether it should happen or not. As long as bitcoin is uncensored it will be used for other data. The only question is how expensive it is.
5903  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to sign a message?! on: September 11, 2015, 11:47:42 AM
I added several wallets to the list of those that can not be used to a sign a message. You might notice that they are all for iOS 7.1.2 which is the latest available iOS version for an iPhone4. I have access to such a phone over the weekend. If you have any wallets that do not require iOS 8 (e.g. Mycelium does) you want me to look at let me know here or via PM. I have some more on my own list (Hive, YardWallet, Zebpay, Coins)[1], but the Wireless for the phone seems a bit unstable. My personal priority here is Hive as its the only wallet I know about that at least in some versions allow you to sign a message[2].

[1] some of these might not actually be wallets, but they turned up when I searched the store for "Bitcoin Wallet" and did a bulk install.
[2] https://github.com/hivewallet/hive-mac/issues/278

I think that you should include also that you can not sign a message from coinbase android app, there is no option for it.

Done, thanks.
5904  Other / Meta / Re: The latest change in the trust system has a flaw making it abusable on: September 11, 2015, 09:19:57 AM
I'm not sure.  According to Theymos I should be adding another new feedback which would be three.  wouldn't that be weird?  or would it be a good record showing Wardrick keeps editing?

Listen to me for one second because I am being very fucking serious here.

I have only edited that feedback twice. I want to edit it again to explain myself but I am not going to ever touch it, I will make a thread with all of my evidence and ask others to leave him negative trust instead.

I am doing that only because you people are accusing me of gaming shit I don't even understand fully. Please do not accuse me of "gaming" the trust system, that is a complete lie and you either know that or you're mistaken as to how many times I have edited my trust.

It has not been edited since 09/09, that is shown on the trust page. So please shut the fuck up or post proof that I am "gaming" the system. Do you have proof I have edited since 09/09? if you do then ppst it as there must be a bug in the trust system as it clearly states the date that the feedback was posted on.

If editing trust is the equivalent of gaming it then the system is broken is it not?

It adds a certain dynamic to the trust system that might not be wanted. The way I understood theymos though the system works as intended. The question whether we that use it understand it the same way still remains though.

Does anyone else reading this thread see what is going on here? These are clear attempts to discredit anyone who tries to leave negative feedback on tspacepilot. Even going as far as to tell me I'm not allowed edit my trust to explain myself. I won't be accused of gaming the trust system so that is why I am going to prove to everyone that tspacepilot is a scammer and let others leave the negative trust instead.

The claim that you gamed the system IMHO came up because you left a negative rating at some time in the past which was already responded by a counter rating from jonald_fyookball.

Code:
jonald_fyookball 39: -0 / +5	2015-09-09	0.00000000 I don't agree with Wardrick's feedback that tspacepilot stole from TradeFortress because according to tspacepilot, TF knew he was working on a bot and then demanded an arbitrary sum (1.5 BTC). Since TradeFortress is a known scammer, I believe tspacepilot's side of the story.

After that you edited your rating which put it on top of the counter rating. My personal opinion on the matter is that this system change is so now and this is probably the first case where its relevant that hardly anyone can blame you for doing something you did not understand. Probably most here (including me) did not understand it was intended to be used that way. I was aware that it was possible when theymos announced the changes, but since most ratings are not left as arguments I did think it would ever come up.

This is btw my current interpretation of the ratings on tsp's profile, the arguments (and opinions) are no longer within a (lengthy) thread, but part of the trust rating. I am not entirely sure I like it. It certainly has positive sides though as its easier for someone to get a rough picture than it would be if you had to read a few hundred posts.

My XAPO wallet

3Jhz9HSdYMv4r5LQXRBAAbKyDFyCpefHvf

Xapo can not be used to sign a message, on top of that there is no standart way to verify a signature for a multi sig address. Posting this address here does nothing for you, but increase your post count by 1.

Code:
THIS POLL WILL RUN FOR 7 DAYS

Is voting here with known (or secret) alts ok? Wink
I was one of the first people to consistently push for the use of escrow, even before default trust existed.

I view escrow as a trusted third party that can act as a mediator should the buyer and seller disagree. It also prevents the seller from running off the coins, or the buyer stealing intellectual property without paying for it.

An escrow can either be free, ask for tips, or charge a flat or sliding scale.

If the person you are trading with is also the escrow, you have no protection from intentional fraud or accidental issues.

What do you think?

YES - Earn what you can, however you can.  Doesn't matter if a service is being purchased and not provided.
NO - An escrow should be a neutral third party.  The fee paid is considered like an insurance premium for protection

I know you made up your mind and I hope you are aware that the question is loaded.

IMHO an escrow should be a 3rd party, no matter what. Everything else should not be considered escrow. As BadBear said regarding moderation one should not moderate issues regarding oneself no matter how competent one is. Same goes for escrow, no matter the trustworthyness of your main account if you want to make a deal with another account get someone else to escrow. There are plenty people offering escrow and it should not be too difficult to find someone.

@QS if you agree with TF's argument that the proof provided by TSP regarding your alt is nil because of confirmation bias you should agree that an escrow that is not a 3rd party without any ties is also biased. The same can be true for someone very close, yes.

-snip-
True they should get ban... Tomatocage abusing trust system too.

No rules have been broken, there will be no ban. This is a DefaultTrust issue and should not involve the staff.

5908  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Issue with bitaddress.org 20BTC reward for assistance on: September 08, 2015, 05:36:43 PM
I do feel for the OP.  But this points out a MAJOR flaw in bitcoin..... the fact that it's leading supporters / proponents / educators are currently a merry band of inbred idiots.  Here's why I say this....

All over this site, I see people screaming in fear about the dangers of not using exchanges to hold your Bitcoin.

Exaggeration, but I get the point and the warning of the dangers are true. The past has shown that an exchange might run into problems and your coins will be gone. This is very simple with bitcoin, you either control the private keys or you dont. Only if you personally are in control the coins are yours, otherwise you should consider them someone elses and you have to trust them.

If you don't hold your private keys, you don't really have your bitcoin.  So here you have this schmuck that goes out and dumps a bunch of bitcoin into a situation that he really has no discipline / technological maturity, or understanding, of what he is doing - and he loses his money/bitcoin.  The reason this happened is because he probably listened to the advice of a bunch of idealistic morons on here - and ultimately he got over his technological head.

My personal guess is that OP either did not listen to any advice or bad advice. Whether or not there ist an ideology behind the advice is your speculation.

Which is SO DARN IRONICALLY AMUSING - because everyone here crows about how Bitcoin is a global currency, and yet they don't have the brains or wisdom to understand that the global population is NOT technologically savy to the degree that they can be trusted not to screw up their bitcoin.

Most wallets do a very good job at hiding the underlying things hard to handle, e.g. the raw private keys from the user. OP decided to go out of their way to download a piece of software that removes all layers of protection other wallets offer. The software used has proper warnings in place that OP either did not read or ignore.

Code:
To safeguard this wallet you must print or otherwise record the Bitcoin address and private key. It is important to make a backup copy of the private key and store it in a safe location.

and

Code:
If you leave/refresh the site or press the "Generate New Address" button then a new private key will be generated and the previously displayed private key will not be retrievable.

This thread really is the best advertisement in the world for why people should put their money into a "Professional Fiat Bitcoin" style Exchange (Circle, Coinbase, etc).  Because your money is not only protected better from thieves (they have much better security than the average citizen), but more importantly, loss of an individuals money is best protected from THEMSELVES - their own stupidity.

Yes, for some people it makes sense to trust someone else instead of their own ability. It is however not the communites duty to judge which kind of person someone is nor has anyone here the capacity to do so. The people that constantly give good advice like e.g. DannyHamilton tend to advice in such a way that the user has a wide varity of options and can choose what is best for them. In the end, no one here can do the decision for you we can only show you possible ways.

And yeah, the big money running the exchanges.... they are greedy, evil, part of the system, basically the same people that are migrating over from running the fiat banks etc etc yatta yatta yatta.

You sound like you have an agenda which has next to nothing to do with the issue at hand.

But lets be perfectly clear.... ANY TIME that a person on this board makes reccomendations to people (who they have no idea what their technological maturity level is) that they need to be in charge of their digital money..... is basically just as evil as the banksters..... because ultimately you cause innocent people to lose their hard earned money.

No. Any time someone freely makes a light and rushed decision that involves a significant amount of value (regardless whether its BTC, FIAT or another crypto currency) it is their own fault. Bitcoin teaches harsh lessons in that regard as your transaction can rarley be undone.

Ohh, and PS.... I hate bankers more than any of you, and at least I have put a few in prison, more than I guess any of you posting here can say.....  But reality and wisdom trumps paranoid teenage-minded anarchistic views any day.  Bitcoin needs to grow up if it is to enter the mainstream, become a global currency etc.

Mabye thats not where bitcoin is heading?

Damn man, that's a lot of coins and a lot of money. What I am not getting, is how this person got a hold of so many coins without knowing how to take care of them? Did some newbie just come and drop $30,000+ without knowing how to secure their investment? This is the only logical explanation.

He was taking care of them by using a paper wallet. He just pressed the wrong button at the fatal moment. I've done it plenty of times with vital things myself but thankfully there wasn't any wealth involved.
Smaller batches would have definitely been a good idea, nothing more than 5btc per wallet. Satoshi did 50btc per wallet when they weren't worth anything right?

50 BTC was the mining reward when bitcoin started. I also dont think that anyone can tell how many wallets satoshis has or had, but you are probably refering to addresses. The point still stands though, test with small amounts until you feel you understand what you are doing well enough.
5909  Other / Archival / Re: Can I get a third party to look at this message log and mediate? on: September 08, 2015, 05:08:54 PM
IMHO[1] it happens way too often that people start acting before every party involved agreed on all terms and provided all details. On the other hand, that might be just me or the few deals I do. Anyway considering that both parties had communication problems and that the work is done. I would not suggest that Razerglass pays the "agreed" amount (you did say OK to the amount regardless of later attempts to negotiate a better price) of 0.125 as it was stated in the left feedback, but a slightly lower price somewhere in the middle. This would since the lower price seems to be 0.035 the middle price would be 0.08 (half way between 0.035 and 0.125). I also think the rating left by Vod is a good idea, but its probably better to clear your communication and be more precise in the future. That is too both of you, repeating what you think the agreed terms are might seem like a waste of time and slow, but in the end it helps avoiding drama like this.

[1] you asked for opinions right?

I dont. I understand that you are protective about your privacy, so are many here. Some have more to fear others less. NO amount of scam busting puts you in a position where its ok to do shady things. Try if you can and see your actions in this thread as if they where someone elses. Would you consider that person trustworthy?

I received the following PM:

!!! WARNING: This user is a newbie. If you are expecting a message from a more veteran member, then this is an imposter !!!

This is regarding to the downgrading of my trust by you

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=trust;u=536759

To increase trust, I am ready to use multi-signature address, with trusted established users of this forum, for all purposes of this scheme.
Link for the scheme
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1133407

Please undo the downgrade, I am doing everything possible to increase the trust,
and contribute to this forum in positive manner.

My answer is: Contact me again in 30 days, not sooner. I will see what you did in the time given and reconsider my rating based on that.

Please review my contribution/involvement  to the bitcoin community in the last 30 days, and reconsider your ratings as promised.

Rating removed, not because of progress, but because I dont think anyone will bite and the section rating should be sufficient.
5912  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to sign a message?! on: September 04, 2015, 09:41:51 AM
Is it common when trying to do the signature on blockchain for the skript to stall and be unresponsive?
Wanted to try this out but keep getting "unresponsive skript".  Huh

I never had that problem, but I also dont use blockchain very often. Its probably best to contact their support about this. Might just be an server load issue.

5914  Other / Meta / Re: Everyone calling for Quickseller to end war on tsp; QS ignores thread for weeks on: August 20, 2015, 08:57:18 AM
Tsp asked me to rethink my opinion about the issue and I did.

My overall assessment of the situation is (boiled down):
- the issue is from the ancient (in internet terms) past
- there has been no other issue since
- there is no concrete proof, just assumptions and interpretations
- the circumstances under which QS dug up an old post as well as the behavior[2] after the rating was left, indirectly removed (BadBear removing QS from DT) and reinstated (TC adding QS) along the several[1] ratings make me question whether this is personal or not.

Yes, there are no rules regarding the DT List, but I would suggest to remove the rating or at the very least change it to neutral.

[1] @QS Im not sure whats wrong with that word, but you left 3 ratings, as QS, as ACCTSeller (now removed) and as FunFunnyFan.
[2] Both sides seem to be locked in some sort of vendetta now. This is does effect other threads and posts.
5915  Other / Meta / Re: just make a "BitcoinXT" section somewhere on the forum. on: August 19, 2015, 08:47:34 AM
So whenever we see "lots of complaining about censorship, lying etc." do they open a section somewhere on the forum? What if other altcoins do the same? Remember, this is Bitcoin forum.
If they don't like rules here they are free to open bitcoinxttalk.org. Wink
valid point, I'm mostly just putting the idea out there as xt is one of the bigger topics of the present. mostly just an idea to consider.

It will pass, just like the other big topics. Afterwards we have a subboard that is no longer needed.
5916  Other / Meta / Re: Everyone calling for Quickseller to end war on tsp; QS ignores thread for weeks on: August 19, 2015, 07:32:43 AM
I was asked to add another point that I noticed in a recent exchange about this.

Quickseller you left negative ratings with several of your alt accounts. While they are not on default trust, I think its still considered spam.
5917  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Can't use wallet seed on: August 18, 2015, 07:46:11 PM
13 words

If you input more than 12 words, the next button will grey out. Your seed should have 12.

You cannot use a seed from different wallet (Armory for example or anything else than Electrum).

Nope, 13 is correct for electrum 2 wallets.

5920  Other / Meta / Re: Forum governance? on: August 18, 2015, 06:58:40 PM
Forums donations aren't for Theymos personally otherwise he would be a millionaire by now , 1.5 million (5,853 BTC now) is basically going to be for the new forum software to get developped , some others should be for moderators (I hope one can confirm) and for administrators but ti's not that much if we compare it to their hard work I believe .

So in that case, who takes decisions about how to use that money?

theymos.

If the money doesn't belong to theymos but he has effectively the right to freely decide how to spend it, it comes down to the same thing, right?

Yes, unless theymos does not make it the same thing. He has decided to spend most of it for the development of a new forum that will open source and thus available to everyone, including those outside the bitcoin community.

That's what I mean with governance: Is the forum a private entity (ie, theymos) or if it's somehow community-controlled, how is this done? Implicitly, if at all?

There is no clear answer to that. Theymos is in legal terms the person that would be considered the sole owner as it currently is. However he does not think of himself as such. I guess his spirit is beyond ownership in that regard.

I think this quote will help you understand what I want to say with this:

I've decided not to create an official announcement thread today. But I will answer some questions.

Quote
Who is the owner of the forum?

I've answered this before.

The forum was created by Satoshi and Sirius. Without any explicit agreement or assignment of ownership, it came to be the case that I am now chiefly responsible for forum management. The domain is owned by Sirius. I have no way of forcing him to do anything with it. (Though I recently did gain partial access so that I can change DNS records.) I control a lot of the forum's money. Sirius cannot force me to do anything with this. Various treasurers control other forum money; they're bound by the treasury agreements.

I am not a lawyer, so I can't say for sure who the forum's owner is legally-speaking, and this is irrelevant to me unless I'm dealing with legal stuff.

Quote
Who is the owner of the BTC collected by the forum?

I've answered this many times.

I control most of the money. I consider it my responsibility to appropriately manage this money for the non-profit benefit of the forum, Bitcoin, and the world. I take this responsibility seriously. However, I retain sole control over how the money is spent. No one has any right to influence my decisions, though I can be convinced by reasonable arguments.

The rest of the money is held by treasurers bound by the treasury agreements. Under the treasury agreements, I have a lot of decision-making power, but I can be over-ruled in some cases.

Again, talk to a lawyer if you want to know who owns the money according to governments. I don't care about this unless I have to.

Quote
Is bitcointalk a registered not for profit?

No. I avoid the term "non-profit" in official materials to avoid giving the impression that a government has assigned the forum with a non-profit label, but the term does accurately represent the philosophy of the forum. No one gets or will ever get any kind of dividend from forum revenue.

Quote
Why do you think we needed to spend so much for software when there are free or much cheaper option available?

The most popular forum software is:
- Old.
- Written in PHP, which sucks.
- Written insecurely and messily.
- Difficult to modify, especially safely.
- Not much more featureful than SMF, if at all.

There are a handful of newer forum software packages which solve some of those problems, but all of them are very sparse in features.

The goal of this software project is to create new, open source forum software which will compete with SMF, phpBB, etc.

Quote
What special features will the forum have?

This isn't completely defined yet. It'll have almost all features that we have now. A main goal will be improving filtering and data presentation so that users can more easily manage the flood of posts both board-wide and within threads, while simultaneously reducing the need for centralized moderation.

Quote
The $350,000 was just a down payment or the full amount owed? If it is not the full amount how much more could this end up costing us?

The total cost will probably be around $1 million. The $350,000 covers several months of work, after which I will evaluate the performance of Slickage Studios and choose whether or not to continue. In any case, the code will be open source, so no work will be lost.

Quote
When will the software be finished?

About one year from now.

Quote
Are you getting a kick back from this operation or do you hold any interest in his company?

No.

Quote
Any plans for implementing some sort of a 2FA in the new forum? (this is especially important for people conducting trades over the forum)

Yes, there will be 2FA.

Quote
What do you think about creating new boards or subdomains for altcoins for a recurring (monthly or quarterly) fee? They could even be excluded from the main forum's statistics, and have their own rules and policies (only retaining a few obvious such as no linking to SR-type onion sites or no trades of goods which are illegal in the buyer's or in the seller's country).

Maybe. I don't see any harm in that if it isn't too difficult/expensive.

Quote
Will there be a working non-javascript version of the forum?

Yes, though some advanced functionality may be unavailable without JavaScript.

Quote
Why is the forum paying people a fee to store the forum's bitcoin when storing bitcoin is free? Can't the forum find enough people that will store bitcoin for free?

Some of the treasurers do store funds for free, but extremely-trustworthy people who will do this are rare.
