61  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple: The Best Way To Legitimize Bitcoin on: December 14, 2013, 03:37:13 AM
How is the quantity of Ripples in circulation determined?
62  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin's intrinsic value on: December 13, 2013, 03:41:12 PM
The intrinsic value of Bitcoin is several things rolled into one.

1) first to market advantage
2) inflation rate is known
3) upper limit / scarcity known (21 million coins)

When combined with the current 'flight from fiat' (i.e., there is no safe fiat currency currently) and gold / silver prices are manipulated.  People are looking for a safe store of value.

So Bitcoin, although not perfect, fits the bill as a safe store of value relative to everything else.

If gold / silver prices surge / are not as strongly manipulated, some may move from bitcoin back to these.  Or, if some country (i.e., China) or some countries (the BRICS) release a stable, gold-backed currency, the same could happen.  People want a safe store of value.  Right now that is Bitcoin and it's likely to carry into the future, unless it gets hacked.

Just check out www.ripplescam.com

From their site:
"Ripple™: It’s highly misleading and not what you think it is. Ripple is a centralized payment system that allows the transfer of artificially printed tokens that claims to be money, like “USD” or “BTC”. OpenCoin Inc goes to great lengths to camouflage the fact that they have total control over the Ripple network, and calls themselves a distributed payment network."

The true power in Bitcoin and the like is:

1)  The inflation rate is known and can't be manipulated.
2)  The total number of bitcoins that can ever be created is known.

Central bankers don't like that...so the created Ripple, for which the number of coins can be increased at their whim.  Also, the upper number could be increased at their whim.  Just because they tell us there is an upper limit means nothing, since Ripple is not based on mining.  They can overnight say, actually, we just created another billion coins.  Just like central banks, which are printing $85 Billion per month and in the coming months they plan to increase this even further.  This type of inflation is not practically possible with Bitcoin and other cryptos, unless it is done at the outset.

Ripple is a bogus, central banker-initiated, attempt at usurping the truly decentralized nature of bitcoin and similar cryptos.

Ripple is not decentralized, it is distributed, big difference.  There's nothing peer-to-peer about ripple.  It relies on 'trusted gateways'.

It will be really interesting to see what happens once the price gets into the $1500+ range.

This might release the floodgates towards the upside, towards $10k.

The same thing might happen, if there is ever a transition into mB.  Psychologically, this might act as a 'reset' where Bitcoin is viewed as Cheap by the general public.

It's interesting that the creator of litecoin is the brother of the owner of BTCChina.   You would have thought they would have listed litecoin before the other exchanges.  Wonder what is going on there.

Bill Still (the guy who is plugging Quarkcoin) is THE guy on monetary reform and has a huge following.

Check out his excellent free YouTube film:  "The Money Masters" (3.5 hours, so get comfortable).

He also has a more recent, shorter free YouTube film called "The Secret of Oz" which is great.

The best one-hour overviews of how our current debt-based money system works are:  "Money as Debt I, II, III."

The best book that I have come across is by Michael Rowbotham:  "The Grip of Death:...".  Bill Still also has a book:  "No more national debt."

Bill Still also does. "The Still Report."  on YouTube.

The best website/organisation that I have come across on the topic of money reform is:  www.positivemoney.com

Bill Still's two key recommendations are:  1) Governments should no longer be allowed to lend money that they don't have; and 2) Banks should no longer be able to lend money that they don't have (i.e., no more fractional reserve lending...1 to 1 only).

Local Bitcoins is the fastest.  You meet someone face-to-face, you give them bitcoin, they give you cash and you part ways once you see say four validations...faster than any exchange.

If the price isn't manipulated by the upcoming wallstreet money that is entering the crypto space, then this price is quite possible.

Hopefully 'they' don't use their capacity to essentially print unlimited amounts of money (85 billion per month currently) to buy up a bunch of cryptocurrency and manipulate their price to their agenda.  Look what they've done with gold and silver.

Ripple is, I believe, a lot more in line with Central Banking ideology than other cryptocoins.  It is distributed but not decentralized.  But they claim the opposite.
