61  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is this real? on: March 12, 2018, 12:04:58 PM
I don't really see Coin Hive as a big deal, and eventually browsers and virus protection will catch on and allow users to block it, if they haven't already.  But I did see that "hackers" -- probably IT department insiders, really -- are secretly installing mining software on government and corporate computers.  That is a perhaps a bigger problem, but still not a big threat to anyone, other than in the case of government computers, it is theft of tax payer funds for the extra electricity used.  Again, it will be dealt with tweaks to virus software.  And from what I've read, such software found to be installed on 1000s of government computers, and the miners made less than <$50.
62  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: List of Forks [updated 3/11/2018] on: March 11, 2018, 03:07:46 PM
Weekend Update.

Added "Ethereum Inc", which claims to be a 1:1 fork.  Added Bitcoin Classic (BCL) which lists the same ticker as Bitcoin Lunar.  It also seems to be confused with BitClassic (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3095296.0), which I posted last week.  Not sure what is going on with these two.  It's not an impressive announcement so this may not be a serious project.

Also, move Abitcoin to the excluded list because it has a limited claim period.

The Bitvote block explore came back online, so I'm removing the "reported dead" tag from that one.

And, Bitcoin Private was added to Coin Market Cap this week, so that one is looking more legit.

Can you tell me the fork block number and/or date of the fork?  I keep a listing for forked coins.  Thanks.
64  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: List of Forks [updated 3/1/2018] on: March 11, 2018, 02:45:58 PM
ABitcoin seems to be an airdrop, not a "real" fork.

Thank you.  I will move it to the "Excluded" section for the next update.
65  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: List of Forks [updated 3/1/2018] on: March 08, 2018, 08:59:07 PM

There are actually two projects using "Bitcoin Lite", as you pointed out, the ERC 20 token that launched in the wake of the eBTC madness ... and this one http://www.bitcoinlite.us which claims to be a hardfork with it's own block chain.  And they are both claiming the ticker BTCL.  This one might be dead, though.  Their launch countdown timer ran to zero weeks ago and no further developments seem to have been made.
66  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Tokens (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][AIRDROP]Ripple Cash - THE NEXGEN PAYMENT SOLUTION on: March 07, 2018, 04:06:16 AM
Why would this be any different than the dozens of other ERC20 tokens that claimed to be an improvement on Bitcoin, Monero, Ether, etc?  For the most part, they all died.
67  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: #ETC Update on: March 06, 2018, 11:01:12 PM
Well, guys, did not repeat the script ZCL.ETC Not lost and 50% after snapshot.Probably investors think that they are cheaper than now they will not buy ETC.My opinion is that ETC has a stronger foundation than many people think. We observe how events develop 8)And more, forgive me if I write incomprehensibly, I use a translator. I'm Russian)

Really glad to see this.  We have been down slightly more than the overall market average, but we didn't have the bottom fall out.  I guess the means maybe there was not much interest in getting the free Callisto, though.
68  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How careful are you? on: March 06, 2018, 10:57:40 PM
Do you...

1. Keep a cold storage for your hodl coins.
2. Use a ledger.
3. Keep a paper copy of your priv-keys
4. Create your transactions off-line and then launch them on-line.
5. Have different passwords for ALL the services you use.
6. Change your password often

How many points do you "score" out of these typical security advices?

I do 3 (keep it in a safe) and 5 (which I think is the most important safety measure you can take).  I guess I score 2 points.

I don't have a ledger, or use paper wallets, but I keep my coins in encrypted desktop wallets, and rarely open them.
69  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Americans jail a 24 year old for selling bitcoins wthout asking for ID on: March 05, 2018, 06:19:38 PM
A little more on the story ... the guy was previously convicted of heroin trafficking, so he was likely already on the feds radar after getting released from prison.

http://www.philly.com/philly/business/bitcoin-crime-nets-pa-heroin-trafficker-prison-time-20180228.html

Exactly, it wasn't like a regular person was trading bitcoins in private, this dude was a criminal king pin and they wanted to lock him up for as long as possible. Only worry if you're on their radar

I don't know if he was a criminal king pin -- he might just be some dope that sucks at staying out of prison -- but I have to wonder if his new business was discovered because he was still involved in the heroin trade.  But This time, as a money launderer instead of a smuggler.

It is quite possible that undercover agents are trying to make contact with under the table bitcoin dealers because they believe it will lead them to all sorts of illegal trades.  Then they found this guy, ran his record, found he was on probation, and decided to hit him up with some rarely used charges to send him back to prison.  The prosecutor did say these kinds of cases are rare.

71  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: No country for Bitcoin miners. PoW change when? on: March 05, 2018, 04:33:06 AM
People seem bothered that bitcoin mining in Iceland uses as much electricity as household use, but why don't they mind that aluminum smelting in Iceland uses 15 times as much electricity as household use.

Well, too be fair, there are not many options when it comes to smelting metals.  If there were a more energy efficient way to do it, industry would adapt.

With ASIC mining, and the race to higher difficulty, we are using an insanely energy inefficient process to accomplish the same thing that could be accomplished with a couple of raspberry pi’s.  I mean, the primary purpose of mining is push along the BlockChain and process transactions.  It’s doesn’t have to require so much energy.
72  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Top Privacy Coin of 2018? on: March 05, 2018, 04:24:03 AM
For best overall coin, I think Monero has proven itself, but it is priced at the “best in class” premium.

For coin with the most growth potential, I’ll go with Deep Onion.  It seems that the airdrop is holding it back, due to fear of dumping and major exchanges are avoiding it until the airdrop is done.

I think it will have rough ride as the airdrop closes, but find it’s footing.  Despite what people say, it has good development.  Coin Gecko ranks DO’s development #42, and community #63, out of the 1400+ coins they rank.
73  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Binance started a war between Elastos (ELA) vs WePower (WPR) on: March 05, 2018, 03:43:50 AM
Is there still no update from Binance?  There message said they would review the voting results and make a decision within 1 week.
74  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Bounties (Altcoins) / Re: EQUAL BOUNTY CAMPAIGN v1.0 - (LIVE NOW!!!!!!) on: March 03, 2018, 09:55:43 PM
Hi Developer, I think there is an error in the calculations.
20% of 2.8 million coins can not be 93333, as you have in a signature company.

The signature campaign is spread for the 3 month campaign and then it was halved due to there being less than 30 successful applicants
I agree, the developer can establish any rules, only these rules are not in the topic.

Yes, that rule is stated in the topic ...Under the header "Important", it does state that if less than 30 applicants are successful, the reward will be cut in half.  I'm disappointed, too, but it was a fairly implemented rule.
75  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Finally, BitConnect Lawsuit has Begun! on: March 03, 2018, 01:58:16 PM
I hope they are going after more than just the Youtubers.... what about the people that actually stole the money?

Just about everyone knew it was Ponzi scheme, and every Bitconnect thread, reddit post, twitter feed, had warnings so none of the "investors" can deny that they were not warned.  Can they prove the Youtubers had insider info that wasn't available to the rest of us?  I don't know if it will be that easy to prove they were scammers.  They have the right to free speech, and can deny that they knew it was Ponzi scheme, claim they lost money, too, claim they were victims ...

While I hope something comes of this, and some justice is served, I also hate how much attention this is getting and how it will be another event to bring down the regulation hammer.  If the Bitconnect suckers had used their heads in the first place, and listened to people instead of calling them "FUDers", then this wouldn't have been a problem.

76  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Binance started a war between Elastos (ELA) vs WePower (WPR) on: March 03, 2018, 12:50:40 AM
WePower has said the results are being examined for vote manipulation and Binance should make an announcement soon.  They say we will get 200 if Wepower is declared the winner or 50 if not.  That is generous either way.  I was in the WePower bounty campaign and 50 or 200 will be a nice bonus.
77  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: EtherBTC (ETHB) on: March 03, 2018, 12:44:24 AM
ERC20 tokens are supposed to be utility tokens, tokens that get value from having a purpose, like renting your harddrive, gambling websites, stabilized to fiat, etc....  so what is the purpose of EtherBTC?  If it has no purpose,  then it has no value.
78  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: #ETC Update on: March 02, 2018, 04:23:25 AM
how to check exchanges who support ETC hardfork ??
i already bough 0.1 BTC wort of ETC
but i am still confused where i have to hold etc in order to get callisto airdrop

I don’t think any exchange has announced support, and if none does, then you just need to hold it through the fork in an ETC wallet where you can access the private key.   Then, you should be able to claim the Callisto by downloading their wallet and importing your old ETC private key.
79  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Was my Wallet Stolen? (Litecoin) on: March 02, 2018, 04:14:11 AM
Unfortunately, all I have is a tablet. I do not have the key. What do you recommend?

Start by copying all those files to a usb drive to preserve them, but any attempts to reinstall the wallet is risky because it will overwrite files.

Do you think there is any chance your anti virus software is blocking the wallet from opening?

can you post a screen shot of the uninstall message?
80  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Was my Wallet Stolen? (Litecoin) on: March 02, 2018, 04:06:46 AM
I don’t think what you are describing is the symptoms of a stolen/hacked wallet.  Sounds more a software corruption.  Do not delete that DAT file.

If you have a second computer, you can try installing the wallet, and importing the dat file.  I would try on a second computer first, if you can, to ensure that you do not overwrite your current wallet files.

Of course, if you have the private key saved somewhere, you can restore from that.
