61  Other / Meta / Re: Merits from your friends? on: January 28, 2018, 12:43:19 PM

Merits will never have a value
My signature campaign already announced to require all participants to have earned at least 10 Merits four weeks from now. That gives a (large) monetary value to Merit.

Isn't this propagating the problem? Merits start having a monetary value and there are only a number of merit sources who (except goodwill) are not obliged at all to give you merit. I find the idea behind merits perfectly OK, it is the execution that is flawed.

Some tweaking is definitely needed in order to make sure that merit does not become the very problem it intended to solve.
62  Other / Meta / Re: How about a merit bounty & services subforum? on: January 28, 2018, 09:48:09 AM
It would make things a lot easier for people. People could agree to do jobs, etc. in exchange for an increase in merit. It would help users find a predictable and reliable supply of merit, and it could help encourage rapid distribution of merit throughout the forum.

This is not adressing the problem at all, you are trying to solve the issue by introducing another questionable concept. The forum does not need people to do jobs to ensure an increase of merit. Unless the people have a legitimate reason to give merit (because they do not have that right now), this system is not going to function. What we need is a real incentive for people to give merit to other people.
63  Other / Meta / Re: what is the shitposting? on: January 28, 2018, 09:43:09 AM
Shitposting is generally making extremely poor quality content with not much effort going into them and/or done in very poor English. For those who struggle with English it is suggested they stick to their local language board or thread. The rules can be found stickied in Meta along with stickies in other sub boards that you should read before posting in them.

Well it's not entirely fair to tell people to stick to their local boards just because English isn't their mother language, is it? Most local boards offer limited content and discussion, as such, people want to be where the majority of the action is going on.

However, there should be a distinction between people who are not native speakers but making a genuine effort to write good posts, and those who blatantly use google translate to translate whatever they wrote in their mother language, and just copy and paste without checking the content. The second group should not be excused.
64  Other / Meta / Re: Merits from your friends? on: January 28, 2018, 09:38:05 AM
Merits will never have a value as they are not meant to be sold.

No further discussion needed unless you want people tagging you. Merits are meant to be earnt with quality posts. Sure you will see lots and lots of bias, but that won't last as once all the initial sMerits have been spread about people will need to earn them, something earnt is worth a shit ton more than something given

Accounts aren’t supposed to have a value, but they do, and this forum allows the buying and selling of them.

It’s not written law that you can’t buy or sell merit, it’s already happening off site on telegram, in discord.

I myself will be picking up a nice shinny new account with some extra merit, as this forum encourages account selling by allowing it to take places, merit is no different.

Prepare for the red tags fella.. DT members don't like this behaviour

Dislike it as much as you want, that’s a blatant abuse of the trust system and a perfect example of why it’s slowly loosing all meaning outside trading boards

no its not, Trading accounts lead to scams.. that is a fact.  Either scamming campaigns - by earning when not deserved, receiving airdrops or trying to scam people who trade. nothing good can come from account trading

In that case we need a system that makes sense, and not implement a faulty system and try to keep it under control with further checks that cannot be enforced realistically. Eliminate merit sources, because merit sources create a bottleneck in terms of what has become a valuable resource on this forum now, and bottlenecks can and will always be exploited.
65  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Price of Iota and tron on: January 28, 2018, 09:21:35 AM
Hey guys,

I'm pretty new here on this forum. I have a question with regards to the user case of coins such as Iota and Tron. In some price speculations you see people saying that the price of Tron could reach 30 dollar and Iota 50.000. I am not that much interested whether it could be true/realistic so just assume it is.

What will happen to the user case of the coins if the value of the maximum devidable value is e.g. 30 dollar ? How would the system deal with the fact that if something would cost 5 dollar and the smallest amount to pay with is 30 dollar?

Thanks!

You can divide all coins into fractions, so you can own less than 1 of any coin. Which means the scenario you describe should never become a problem.

Whether the prices will reach that far, is highly debatable. I don't think both of these coins will ever reach the price points you mention.
66  Other / Archival / Re: Bitcoin price will be 3000$ on 29 Feb on: January 27, 2018, 09:34:28 PM
Hi one of my best friend he is a big Crypto exchanger telling me

Bitcoin price will be 3000$ on 29 Feb Bad news for bitcoin Lovers can anyone confirm this ?

How do you expect anyone to confirm this? No one can confirm something like this if they are not a fortuneteller or a time traveler.

Perhaps more important than that, check out a calendar. February this year has 28 days.
67  Other / Meta / Re: Merits could be a character molding. on: January 27, 2018, 04:36:57 PM

Earlier it was more about posts, ranks were counted on posts, not quality, yes, no, mmmm, agree, bad, helpful, ICO...monolugue got me 6 posts with activity.

Those posts weren't worth anything without the merit system anyway. All signature campaigns mandate that the comments be constructive and above a certain number of characters, so the posts you describe were and still are worthless.

As I also said in another thread, the problem is that there are no incentives to give people merit. It is not changing the user experiences of the people who give merit on this forum so there is no real reason for anyone to give merit.
68  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The future for BitConnect??? :D on: January 27, 2018, 04:28:33 PM
Maybe the coins may be worth something as a novelty, similar to how people like to collect old banknotes and coins and so on. Due to this I think the price will never reach $0 although bitconnect has collapsed, since there will always be some interest in this token for comedic purposes.
69  Other / Meta / Re: Vital Facts and Figures about Merit Point System.(Answers to your Queries) on: January 27, 2018, 04:17:53 PM
I get the point alright, but I think it won't work, because you are relying on the benevolence of total strangers who are supposed to do you a favor even though they gain absolutely nothing from it.
You're wrong here: I gain a lot from improving the post quality on this forum.
I have reported many bad posts, and the spam only got worse. I see Merits as the opposite: I can now reward good posts! Of course I'll keep doing that. I already think a Jr. Member with 35 Merit has much more interesting posts to read than a Legendary with exactly 1000 Merit (which means nobody gave anything to more than 1000 posts).

I would agree with you if there was an easy way to identify these posts, like sorting posts in a thread by merit; which probably wouldn't make much sense in a forum setting as well because the order of the posts is integral to understanding what is being discussed. As such, in its current state, I'm not convinced how merits are going to improve the quality of discussions in an average thread.
70  Other / Meta / Re: Vital Facts and Figures about Merit Point System.(Answers to your Queries) on: January 26, 2018, 06:44:03 PM
My question still stands: What happens if they expire? Even if I had millions of sMerits which I could give to people every day, why should I give merits? Giving out merits is not changing my life in any way.
You should give merits so as to encourage quality posts on the forum. This will help new members to rank up. There is no monetary benefit for this. But if everybody starts thinking the same, you will also remain stuck at current level. Hope you got the point.

I get the point alright, but I think it won't work, because you are relying on the benevolence of total strangers who are supposed to do you a favor even though they gain absolutely nothing from it. Especially when you consider that there isn't enough merit to go around in the first place.
71  Other / Meta / Re: Vital Facts and Figures about Merit Point System.(Answers to your Queries) on: January 26, 2018, 05:37:21 PM

So in summary, my question once again: Why would anyone give anyone merit?

Thanks in advance for anyone's response to this question.

Merit sources need to give those Smerits (about 9000 per month) otherwise they expire. It is mentioned that if hoarding of merits is seen in future, they might be nullified.

My question still stands: What happens if they expire? Even if I had millions of sMerits which I could give to people every day, why should I give merits? Giving out merits is not changing my life in any way.
72  Other / Meta / Re: Vital Facts and Figures about Merit Point System.(Answers to your Queries) on: January 26, 2018, 05:03:17 PM
I have a question which I think hasn't been addressed yet: Why should anyone give merit? What is the incentive behind it?

I understand that we are trying to implement a system similar to reddit where people are motivated to make high quality posts in order to get upvotes, but the way reddit displays posts is so different than us. Redditors are motivated to upvote posts because high quality posts always appear on top, so whichever thread I go to, I'm likely to see high quality posts at the top. That means it is in my interest to upvote good posts because I always want to see good posts at the top.

But this is a forum and no matter what the merit count of a post is, it will always be in the same position, so giving merit is not affecting anybody's user experience on this forum. As such, I feel like there will be a huge lack of merit, especially for relatively new users, because no one will feel the need to hand out merit.

So in summary, my question once again: Why would anyone give anyone merit?

Thanks in advance for anyone's response to this question.
73  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: When is crypto gonna blow up? on: January 26, 2018, 04:11:02 PM
It's because governments still have not taken an official stance on bitcoin and cryptocurrencies as a whole. There is the threat that exchanges may be banned, or income off of crypto declared illegal, so a lot of people are not willing to take this risk. If bitcoin were to finally become legitimate, we wouldn't see mooning coins anymore but the market cap would definitely go through the roof.
74  Other / Meta / Re: People might sell they're merit points. on: January 26, 2018, 04:04:04 PM
Just because he was a newbie doesn't mean he can't have any merit points. If he wrote a good quality post and people find the post good they can give him merit.

But why? Why should any user give anyone merit? Do they earn something if they give merit? It's not like reddit where merited posts appear above others, it's not changing anyone's forum experience at all.

The scarcity of merit aside, as long as you can't create incentives for users to give merit, this system cannot work.
75  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Investment or speculation ??? on: January 22, 2018, 06:29:31 PM
Let's think together and give opinions.
Bitcoin investment or Altcoins is speculation rather than investment?

I don't think it can be considered a speculation, because it has such a huge scale and a high market cap I find it not viable that an operation of this size is running on speculation (although people against bitcoin believe this). It is definitely an investment, albeit an unconventional one.
76  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why does bitcoin crash occasionally? on: January 21, 2018, 05:26:35 PM
Fear of the bubble bursting i think was a factor in the correction we had last week.
There was a lot of talk and hype about crypto being in a bubble which was going to burst,
Which didnt happen.
I think any major hype at all in the markets and a lot of people will jump on it.
We saw this before christmas when we almost got to 20k and we saw it again last week.

OK, let's assume the initial drop was due to people being scared that bitcoin is a bubble about to burst.. After that sudden drop the price had begun to recover, so why the drop now? Not only bitcoin, but pretty much every single altcoin is down by double digit percentages.
77  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How many coins & tokens have you bought so far ? on: January 21, 2018, 05:23:37 PM
I have invested in quite a number of different coins so far, and although I have made profits off of most of them, everytime I buy a new altcoin, I leave some of it behind because I use binance and every time I trade I leave some dust behind. Hopefully I will be able to recover those bits and pieces of coins eventually.
78  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: I am ruined... on: January 21, 2018, 05:21:19 PM

Sorry to hear that man, I hope you will recover eventually. Crypto or not, for any market, it is not advisable to invest all your money in one single thing, although the profits may seem very attractive. You have to always diversify your portfolio.
79  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: RailBlocks on: January 21, 2018, 05:18:53 PM
Raiblocks have gone down a lot. It's cheap now compared to ATH. It's a good project imo, with a good dev team. Zero fees and instant transactions is always nice Grin

Those features are of course nice, but a lot of new alts are offering those two things nowadays. Are there any other features that RailBlocks has, or is it just another generic coin? I see people on the internet are very optimistic about it, but I haven't read anything so far which made me think this coin is special.
80  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: what is your plan? on: January 19, 2018, 07:11:02 PM
By plan i mean when do you plan to cash out. Is it when you have made enough to buy a car, a house maybe? or are you setting your sights higher?

Personally i'd just like to own my own home, after that i would just play with spare change.

I don't have a concrete goal, I hope to know the point that I'm going to cash out when I get there. But in any case I don't have any dreams of becoming a crypto millionaire or something; just some additional money in other than my salary would be more than enough for me.
