61  Economy / Economics / Re: Difficulty.....It can't keep going up 30% each increase. on: December 23, 2013, 08:50:10 PM
So what's your best guess at hashrate added to the network by March 31?

Code:
1 TH/s = 0.14 mil difficulty
1 PH/s = 140 mil difficulty
1 million difficulty = 7 TH/s
1 billion difficulty = 7 PH/s
1 trillion difficulty = 7 EH/s

10 phs? 25phs? 50? 75? Difficulty increases of 1.4bill, 3.5bill. 7bill, 10.5 bill respectively?

I've seen so-called "conservative" predictions of 5.5 billion difficulty thru end Q1 2014, which implies about 30 petahash.  And potential tapering at some point.  Sound reasonable or no?

Thank you for sharing..
This is USD-BTC-USD, right?

Quick question: I'm having trouble with step 1. USD-BTC

I opened accounts at several of the exchanges:
MT Gox: verified acct, but typically best place to sell, don't know how fast they fund
Vircurex: VouchX closed, no way to fund acct
CampBX:Either check by USmail, or money order, 5-9 day lag before you get deposited
CryptoTrade: Only working funding method appears to be the russian one, payeer, I didn't try
OK Koin: website was in japanese.

I tried Coinbase: once verified, funding was fast, but converting to btc takes 4-6 days
Any recommendations?

Is it possible the big equipment manufacturers are currently producing, testing, and "mining while the mining's good" with your prepaid-for machines?
That could explain the network hash rate increase, which I suspect could mean the big hash rate increase we are expecting Q1/Q2 could be already be being averaged in.
However, a quick glance at the network hash rate http://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/difficulty
Shows that we have experienced/are experiencing a significant hash rate decline.  Why? I have no idea.  Guesses: Any combination of China's policy change, rise in ddos attacks, bitcoin price volatility, and seasonal/holiday fluctuations.  I hope that trend continues for a little while.
64  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Now that Bitcoin prices just plummeted, what will happen to difficulty adjustment on: December 19, 2013, 02:18:30 AM
Correct me if I am wrong..  BTC price has no direct impact on difficulty. Only hashrate, and that is not going to go down.

If network hashrate went from 3500 Ths to 5000 Ths in November (15k increase, and difficulty went from 400M to 600M)....

And.... in the first 18 days of December, hashrate has increased from 5000 Ths to 9000+ Ths.(additional 4000+ and counting Ths's, with expected difficulty rise to 1.1B or so, up ~300M, due in a couple days.

And.... there has been few large shipments of new equipment(is that right? Maybe some Antminers or cubes?)

Then.... Where is all this hashing power coming from?  5 Petahashes in 3 weeks? MY assumption is that one of, some of, or all of (Neptunes, Prosperos, Terraminers, Coincrafts, Sierras etc..) are coming online as we speak, i.e. for testing or flat out raking in BTC.
If hashrate increases are coming from bitfury chips and old idle eruptors/hobbyists, and all the new equipment is truly still in production to be shipped as scheduled Q1 (or not, lol), difficulty will go absolutely crazy, and be much, much higher than the 30% increases going forward the next few months. Does anyone have an educated guess as to how much hashing has been preordered?

However, I don't think that's the real picture.  This spreadsheet has been pretty good so far
 https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Auya3iRE6az1dDc0UVgwMU52YVpTazVjSHByOGNiWHc&usp=sharing#gid=8
(I'm sorry I don't remember the author, but thank you!)
Even if it's slightly and self-admittedly pessimistic, I see no reason to believe it's not going to be a decent ballpark estimate going forward, which means to me, all(or alot of) the new equipment promised/paid-for is already hashing, and more coming online everyday, and going to continue until sometime in April, when the manufacturers decide they are done teasing everybody with those fashionably late "February Batch" or "Q2" machines, and they decide to start production of their first petahash units.  At which point they'll empty the warehouse a little more freely, fully knowing those units are almost useless.
So, my guess is that it would make sense if the difficulty increases will be close to 30% near-term with an upside bias (So Jan 1 guess something like up 500M, then 600M, 700M, and 800M until everything is hashing (yet, we won't have, or will slowly get, all that new hashrate)

But "IF" that spreadsheet is even close: You'll lose thousands in 12 months of mining with even top-of-the-line equipment (even if it puts out more than advertised), at which point electricity costs exceed returns, and you have to throw it out.  http://mining.thegenesisblock.com/a/f56883f7cb
UNLESS.... BTC goes back over $1000 and you manage to break even.  (That could be stressful depending on WHEN , or possibly "if", it goes back over $1000)
So I still don't know the answer, but I do think the game is rigged to some extent.

Big question for me is "Is this the pipe dream, carrot dangling, get rich quick scheme I've been looking for?"  Or is it truly history in the making.  Whats after 28nm 500ghs asic chips?  Where does the technology hit the wall?  Are they gonna let me pre-order these 14nm cpus they'll be stuffing in my smartphone in 2014 that can hash as well as any ASIC chip and tell me I can get a group buy for 100 of them for $25 ea so that I can populate my wasp and hive with, getting 2 gazillion hs's?  But hey, if BTC is $100,000, that's a deal maker, right?
65  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help with USB 7 Block eruptor setup and cgminer on: December 01, 2013, 06:08:08 AM
It was none of those, it was the 10 port hub.

But, I believe you were right.  I put in one stick at a time while the miner was running, and they appeared until I got to stick #5.  Then I got the error.  So I stuck the rest in the USB ports on my box, with a fan on them.

Not sure why someone would sell me a setup like that if it did not work as intended.

Thanks for your reply..

Darcie.

The cgminer thread is 685 pages long.  While I tried to search through it, the search feature limitations and the sheer size of the thread made it impossible.

I have a 10 port Rosewill USB hub and 7 block eruptors in it.
I successfully changed the driver to WinUSB drivers using zadig and I was also able to start cgminer.   I created a .bat file, which did not ( and still does not) work.  It just opens up quick, and closes, almost imperceptibly.  I must have the command line wrong, but I was pretty sure I had it right.
If I open up cgminer.exe, I can manually enter the pool and user information, and the miner starts running.

Looking at cgminer, I noticed I was running close to 333 MHS, which is what I would expect from 1 block eruptor, not 7.  Pool also confirmed 333mhs.  I also noticed that when work is accepted, it is always from AMU 0.  Is that the ID of the hub or am I missing 6 eruptors?  I hot swapped one block eruptor to an open port on the hub, and after a few error messages, the AMU changed to AMU 1.

Then I started trying different ports, and well, just messed it all up.

Now I get:

"USB init, open device failed, err -12, you need to install a win USB driver for AMU device 5:5"
"icarus detect <5:5> failed to initialise <incorrect device?>"
"No devices detected"

I keep reading the README.txt, but it's just not sinking in.
The silabs driver kept reinstalling itself upon reboot.  And I kept changing it to WINUSB, but it's winning the battle.   I think I got rid of the bad driver, but what now?

My question is, how do I get all 7 to work?  I'm sure there's a thread devoted to this already, just need to be pointed in the right direction.  (Also, my device manager is only "seeing" 6 devices.  They all have lights lit on them, not sure what's going on there either.)

I can probably get the one to work again but what's the point of that.

Thanks

Darcie

I'm using version 3.8.3 cgminer, let me know if you need more specs.
