61  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Network Hash Rate Stabilization? on: January 23, 2014, 07:17:00 PM
That's what it seems like, it's starting to plateau. Some of the older miners with their USB sticks may be giving up, and especially those still trying with GPU's may be into the scrypt altcoins now, as the interest there has really taken off. The rush to get into it as a newbie may have peaked as well, seeing how the ROI factor isn't worth it to buy most currently available "affordable" newbie rigs for themselves. It's still going up though, and as you say there will probably be another few big jumps once the next gen new rigs come online, but how will they factor into the total hashrate over time. So it looks like there's a temporary respite now, but it's still going p by about 22.6% in about 20 hours according to Bitwisdom, not a welcome jump at all but much better than the 30%+ jump they had predicted earlier in the cycle.

A great step for the industry, they know we need computer equipment, and many of us keep our cash in BTC rather than the bank.

So if I were to trade my spare .005 BTC on Coinex - what would get me the best return in 1-3 days, just for fun. Looks like EAC and DOGE are both going up, but MOON is really going up. I already have 42,000 EAC from mining so not going to sell them. Looks like interest in the scrypt altcoins is really rising as BTC is not gaining in value, so it may be time to play the market with a bit of BTC.

Coinwarz is now showing moon less profitable the DOGE again, and the diff is supposed to triple in 115 blocks.

Just created a wallet under Ubuntu, and it works:

created a directory in my home folder "mooncoin" and opened a terminal in it:

git clone git://github.com/realmooncoin/mooncoin

added needed dependencies:

sudo apt-get install qt4-qmake libqt4-dev build-essential libboost-dev libboost-system-dev libboost-filesystem-dev libboost-program-options-dev libboost-thread-dev libssl-dev libdb++-dev libminiupnpc-dev

Then ran these from a terminal opened in the top-level Mooncoin folder I created which now contains build, doc, share, src, (etc).

qmake
make

Then you will finally have a mooncoin-qt executable file in the same folder when it's done compiling.

67  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Next difficulty ~2,000,000,000? on: January 17, 2014, 09:04:17 PM
Now bitcoinwisdom is saying it's only going up by about 29.6% in 7 days, that's about 2% less than was estimated yesterday, maybe a lot of smaller miners will start to pull the plug and head towards other altcoins.

I still have over 26,000 I mined about a week ago, then the price crashed so I'm not selling them until they are at least back in better days, and will definitely hold if the price keeps rising after that.

OK, so in one hour the amount of coins you can mine will double per hashrate? and for how long, 24 hours? If the price is at its current floor it may be worth mining them again for a while. Then holding onto them for a few days or weeks until the price recovers or there is a steady upward trend.
70  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin in 5 years on: January 16, 2014, 08:36:56 PM
I see Bitcoin as becoming more mainstream and stable, also as a hedge against economic conditions. Fiat money keeps being printed as well, and the value of dollars is gradually declining vs the goods that it can purchase, as well as how it can fluctuate in the world currency market. The oil market is based on US dollars, but that can change too. I see Bitcoin as a good long term investment that will not lose relative value in purchasing power. Right now it's more in the discovery/adoption phase and there is still some uncertainty, but once past this hurdle should become more stable. I see the price going up steadily soon as more people invest in it and business adopt it, then later the valuation should still keep going up, but less quickly. I do think it will always beat having fiat money in a bank, and many will soon realize that.
71  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Why buy Neptune KNC? Bitcoin Diffculty on: January 16, 2014, 07:46:42 PM
How do you all think the ROI would be at some point in a few months if someone were to use these to mine in a coin-switching SHA256 multipool spread out over a dozen coins to keep the diff low in each. Seems like none now are consistently more profitable nor predictably stable or going up in value, (maybe Peercoin?) but if they received enough attention their value may consistently bring a good ROI in time. Just wondered if anyone had a best-conceived strategy on miners as it becomes less and less profitable to mine BTC.
72  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Call To Arms: War on the shitcoins on: January 15, 2014, 06:00:40 AM
Yes, I've tried several, and some were very polished-looking with sufficient hype and dozens of forum pages, but none have been consistent ROI mules as Doge has, so I've come back to mining them. There are a couple I'm holding onto in case the value goes up, but for consistent income, DOGE has been doing very well lately.
73  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Tweaking R9 290 scrypt mining - cgminer on: January 15, 2014, 05:56:10 AM
I've found that if you have your browser open in another window, the screen refresh cuts down the hashing quite a bit while looking at the browser page. It could go down by 100 or more. I don't have to close my browser, just go back to the screen where the terminal window is running, and it will quickly go back up. I'm using Ubuntu where you can have 4 "pages" or "windows" and have apps running in each. So before I turn off the monitor for the night, I make sure I'm looking at the page which shows the terminal window. Regardless of whether I shut down the browser or not, it hash rate will stay close to the max just by looking at the terminal only, on it's separate screen.

I've been using the Eclipse Mining Consortium for a while now and have no complaints.
75  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do you store your passwords? on: January 15, 2014, 05:02:14 AM
I use multiples of pi to 5 digits, and insert them periodically into a different spot inside my passwords, and keep a log of the way I do it as a system.
76  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How many people pushing bitcoin on this forum have a vested interest? on: January 15, 2014, 04:46:53 AM
I actually had zero invested, but laid out about $700+ in buying a bitcoin plus over $2500 in mining rig equipment in the past month. $979 for a block erupter cube and about $1500 to upgrade one GPU rig and add 2 new GPU rigs for non-BTC altcoins. So far my equity is about $1250 in returns.  So I still need about $1950 to ROI, and it's currently earning me about $20 a day, so I still have 100 days, but as the diff goes up on both BTC and altcoins it may take a bit longer. But I'm hoping this craze catches on to the mainstream and the actual coin values jump soon. That's when it will pay off. I'm earning a low income and had to take a lot out on my credit cards, and I'm old enough to be only a bit more than 2 years from retirement, but I'm a computer geek, and "work from home" YES, I like when the miner profits roll in, checking the graphs each day, etc... It's worth just being in the game for the excitement. And you can bet I coin hop for the ones that do better from day to day, and hold the ones I think are good investments. I'm sure it will pay off eventually, but in extra income per month after the ROI period, I don't know as the situation is changing so quickly.
