61  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Catcoin - Scrypt meow! on: January 12, 2014, 02:40:27 AM
I've tested it as much as I really can without a working -testnet.

It's live, see http://kittyco.in/p2pool , and it's up to you all to vote with your hashes on which side of the fork at block 20999 you want.
I didn't realize it was live and in the world - and a potential 51% diversion for CAT.  As much as I admire the work of all that have been involved in this coin from the beginning, I'm not happy about either another knee-jerk decision to change the coin.  I think that no code should go 'live' unless/until at least the new 'board' is, well, on board with the changes.

And yes, I suppose you could say 'under attack', but it's really just a product of rational profit-seeking behavior, which is an easily programmable fix.
Sure - I get the profit-seeking behavior - no worries there.  But I'm seeing the hash spikes happen at the end of our painfully short low-diff periods - which appear to push the diff up and make the coin less profitable to mine.  The confirm rate for the long almost-dead periods is painfully slow.  I'm mining, though only control about 2M hash, and when I want to take advantage of the low-diff points, I come in a few blocks early and then get out before the low-diff period ends - but that seems to be when the 'attackers' come in with a drastic spike.  Either the automated pools have slow reactions or someone's playing games.  I don't know which.

First off, this "live server" is as close to a test net as we can currently get, unless these changes get over 100 Mhash (or essentially a vote by hash by the community), there is absolutely ZERO way this is going to "take over". Remember only the longest block-chain is legit, unless a majority of users were to move over to hozers code, it's not and will not be the official code. Calling this Knee-jerk is a little bit incorrect, as these changes are far from official or being "THE" catcoin blockchain.

Secondly, we're looking for these changes to be adopted into KR105's fork and pushed out as an actual hard fork to the code. We're looking for the community's input on the potential 1 block retarget, 36 block average method. I've repeatedly tried to get comment on this system, and repeatedly the conversation has been derailed by unrelated conversation. Elbvu1's method has promise and so does hozer's stake mining, as long term solutions. In the short term, I personally think the 1 block retarget, using the previous 36 blocks average diff will allow it to step up and down. The diff will almost look as if it is going up and down a flight of stairs. I'll give you an example to demonstrate.

Here's an EXTREMELY rough paint diagram to illustrate how I envision this working.

(Forgive my paint noobishness, I just banged this out real quick. Put down the pitchforks people! Tongue)

http://imgur.com/9Q6coVg

Take a look at that, this is the behavior we want to see implemented, and due to the 1 block retarget the jumps are LIMITED by the average of the previous 36 blocks, it will limit the extreme spikes to this "stepping" action. We may need another fork down the road to add more functionality and to look at loyalty credits or stake-mining. But in the short term this should fix the brutal jumps and make this coin more attractive both in reliability and profitability. Comments?

Guy's, no offense but would it be possible to try and keep this thread on topic. I'd be glad to help any of you out with hardware issues, but this isn't really the thread for it. THat being said, can someone take a look at hozers proposal?
63  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Catcoin - Scrypt meow! on: January 11, 2014, 05:44:45 AM
Any thoughts on the 1 block retarget, average of previous 36 blocks idea?
64  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Catcoin - Scrypt meow! on: January 11, 2014, 03:53:25 AM
The Facebook page has been updated with new info. I'll be posting some lolcats and such to generate new content. Also, we're still discussing fork options, and are open to suggestions from the community.

As a starting point. We're talking about once again modifying the diff recalculation algorithm. The best suggestion we've see so far is to re-target the difficulty EVERY block and take an average of the previous 36 blocks to allow the diff to step up and down, but much more quickly than it does now. This would eliminate the jumpiness we see now.To our knowledge, no other coin uses this method, and would be effective at integrating the multipools quickly if they joined, making them unprofitable as quickly as possible, while returning to respectable difficulty levels quite quickly once they depart. We are curious why no one is using this already, and plan to test it extensively to ensure there will be no issues. We are asking for comment on this plan, and looking to see if any of you can detect any issues with the algorithm.

We also plan to patch a small issue with the tool that estimates the network hash rate. This tool has no bearing on the function of the coin, just how the wallet estimates the hashrate. In our opinion it is not reacting quickly enough to dramatic hash rate changes, which is why the wallet and catcoins.biz are so different in estimates. It's also affecting the diff predictions on IRC and at the pools.

Starting to get real tired of all this bickering.

Focus on saving the coin not your egos.

+1

Kuroman, that conversation was largely over and done with. Why did you pour gasoline on the fire? Let's just move on, both you and LeoC are valuable members of this community, we need everyone to work together to get this place fixed up. Lets move on and get this coin restarted.

On a side note: I apologize for the delay with Facebook, had some RL stuff take priority (my wife has pneumonia), so I've been kinda slow with updating it. I hope to get some work done on it this afternoon.

Weird. New Wallet won't sync past 4 days ago. Is there another patch needed?

C

Press the help button, go to debug, then console tab.

Type (without quotes , press enter after each command) "addnode eu.coinium.org add", "addnode us.coinium.org add", "addnode teamcatcoin.com add".

If that doesn't work, and your in windows 7, type back here and we can try a couple more things.
Done. No go. It's the 0.8.2 wallet, right, and 8 nodes connected.

Hm.

http://www.catcoin.pw/catcoin-0.8.7.0-win32-setup.exe

0.8.7.0. The one in the OP. update the wallet. then run it, if you unzipped your original wallet, the installer installs somewhere different. Make sure you're running from the correct location. If it's still stuck on block 20290 after that. Let us know.

LeoC,

If you haven't already, check my post out from a few pages ago here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=380130.msg4399260#msg4399260

We're very much still into this coin. I've got 4 Mhash on it 24/7 loss or not, and I actually am doing ok-ish..... 350 coins in past 5 days....so still more profit than LTC, at least IMHO. THis coin is set to go great places, we just have to get it forked, and I actually have to have 5 consecutive minutes to rebuild the social media pages. I sent you a PM, I'd like you to join our dev team and help us from a marketwatch/finance side of things. If you're interested, please PM me and I'll give you the IRC channel, we'd love to have your insight to better position this coin and get it mainstream.

Thanks!

KM

what's happening - blockchain stuck?

What do you mean? We found like 10 blocks in an hour, it needs to level out a bit still.
71  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Catcoin - Scrypt meow! on: January 09, 2014, 08:31:11 PM
YOu must download the new version then install.

Unrelated:

The network hash prediction is quite big right now, for some reason, Coinium is finding blocks WAY quicker than they should. like every 2 minutes, so I believe that's artificially inflating the estimated hash rate, we can only hope that trend stops or the next diff is really going to suck......

http://cat.coinium.org/index.php?page=statistics&action=blocks

http://catcoins.biz/charts/

What's with all those blocks found by anonymous?  Undecided

It's just people that anonymize their stats.

By reading the OP.......

You need to update your wallet.

Looks like diffi will end in an disaster one more time.
Weather price goes up to a level miner stay mining on current diffi or it will die because
during unprofitably time transactions are too low and investors get rid off the CAT

No it won't actually. We're only getting an extra 500 MH currently from somewhere, down from 4 GH two days ago and 1.5 GH yesterday. Whoever is behind it is holding back. Also next diff estimate is 37.9 which is fucking perfect for us to get back in the game. Let's hope that goes through.

EDIT: looks like new diff might be 59, sure it's not 37, but at least it's not fucking 80 again.

It's 59.5, which isn't terrible if we can keep enough hash around to keep it over 35 the next change.

itīs waisted time  Huh

No, it isn't. We're going to save this coin, it is far from dead, if people would just be a little more positive and provide us with some giveawyas and more gambling sites and stuff so we can continue to build our already large community, this coin absolutely will go places. I'll be updating Facebook at some point today to give it fresh info and possibly a new look.

I agree, it's not fucking 80 again or something stupid like that, people might actually hang around. we're sitting at 0.420 GH currently.

yeah, it wasn't instant this time, remembers those tools are only a guess, it's not estimating 4 GH this time at least Tongue Diff is still gonna get boned I think though.
79  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Catcoin - Scrypt meow! on: January 09, 2014, 02:52:22 PM
Network is estimated at 390 MHash right now. We shall see if middlecoin shows up to the party (that's who I think is behind those spikes, FYI)
390? more like 150 Mh/s no?

We got 9 blocks in 35 minutes, that's a lot more than 150 MH/s

Middlecoin is bouncing between LTC, DOGE, and something at 12.94 diff (848K). No CAT so far.

Teamcatcoin has the majority of those blocks.
