61  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ★★ DigiByte ★★ [DGB] Custom MP Code ✈ DigiShield v2.0 Mandatory Update ✔ on: February 26, 2014, 12:16:34 AM
I've never had to deal with an update, being still new to all altcoin stuff.  I've downloaded the new wallet from the post Digibyte put up, and of course I have not addresses, I am assuming as I did not have any DGB in my wallet and had only used 1 address while trying to set up my miner that it doesn't really matter and I am essentially starting from fresh right?

Also what happened to pickaxe pool.  I had a few DGB on there (459 maybe) not much at all i know but it was just what I earned while I was testing but I can't even load up the site now.

Rather than downloading the whole new wallet what should I have done to keep the addresses I had generated ( thinking of future updates when I actually have a wallet with something in it to want to keep)

Just found mint and thought i'd give it a try, any suggestions on the best pool?

Use SGMiner 4.0 instead of 4.1 for the optimized .CL and .BIN files to work.

Any ideas where I can get a compiled version of sgminer 4.0 to save me trying to compile it myself

Am I the only miner on pickaxe??

Is there any benefit to these P2P pools I see shouted out?

Also Mezza  I tried again using the .cl file and .bin file and it turns out sgminer ignores both and makes a new .bin file using the ckolivas.cl as it shows here

http://prntscr.com/2u1jq4

what bin files are in your miner's folder?

I might try specify the kernel again, though i didn't have a lot of luck last time with making sgminer work at all doing that

This is what I seem to be getting as it is

http://prntscr.com/2u1kb2

What do you think of the khs and WU figures

This is using following

--lookup-gap 2 --thread-concurrency 8192,8192,8192 -g 2 -I 13 -w 256 --auto-fan --temp-cutoff 90,90,90 --temp-overheat 85,85,85 --temp-target 68,68,68 --gpu-memclock 1500,1500,1500 --gpu-engine 1065,1065,1065 --expiry 1 --scan-time 1 --queue 0

I need to play with GPU 0 still,

Mezza I would also like to know how you used that 'optomized' BIOS file cos atiflash doesn't recognise it when I try.  Maybe because its a .bin file not a .rom?  I followed crytobadger's instructions like when I unvervolted my card and it still won't work

Also thinking about it again I'm not sure you have been using the 'optomised' kernel file... because when I have multiple .cl files int he kernel folder, like you said you did sgminer just picks one for me...I'd be really interested to see whatyou .bin file is once you've been hashing
67  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Can't break 700Kh/s with 280X Dual-X OC (11221-00-20G) on: February 19, 2014, 08:11:59 PM
Quote

As far as the kernel goes, I simply renamed my existing kernel file "scrypt130511.cl" to "scrypt130511.cl.backup", and then copied the modified "scrypt130511.cl" file in to the same location as the backup. I didn't specify anything in my arguments, the miner just picks it up. Incidentally, how can you tell which .cl file the miner is using?

CGWatcher just gives you a nicer way to look at your stats, but I prefer to just look in the miner window since it's gives you immediate stats on what it's doing right that second. I primarily use CGWatcher because it can reboot the miner or even your computer if things crash. But it has a ton of other cool features like e-mail updates (which I just discovered yesterday, pretty cool). I notice that my hash rates jump up and down a lot in the first 15 or so minutes that the miner starts, so any time you make a change to your settings give it at least that long before determining if what you've changed helps or not. After it's been running for several hours the average rates should hardly change much at all. If it continues to jump around for a long time it may mean you're getting errors or lots of rejects (so I've heard).

That's as much as I know right now. Feel like I'll never be an expert at this though since there seem to be no end to the variables that can influence performance. Wish I were an engineer, alas I'm just a lay person trying to make a buck. Wink

Yeah me too. Proving harder than I had hoped too.  The .bin file that you'll find in the sgminer folder has the name of a kernel file at the begining of it. Mine always seems to pick ckolivas.cl.  I had the scrypt130511.cl file in the kernel folder, but it doesn't pick it and if i delete the others it doesn't work and I can't make the kernal argument work either... so far.

What does you .BIN file start with, I wonder what kernel your actually using then?

sgminer has serveral kernel files but i don't know why it picks a particuar kernel
68  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ★★ DigiByte ★★ [DGB] A Professional Cryptocurrency ✈ Android Wallet, CoinedUp ✔ on: February 18, 2014, 11:37:17 PM
When you look at your BIN file name does it what does it actually say? Does it include Darkcoin in the file name because i've had trouble specifiying the kernel to use, Of all the ones in the sgminer kernel folder it uses ckolivas, not the srypt130302.cl kernel i downloaded which is supposed to be optomised for my cards
69  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ★★ DigiByte ★★ [DGB] A Professional Cryptocurrency ✈ Android Wallet, CoinedUp ✔ on: February 18, 2014, 10:52:44 PM
Anyone tell me if I should be worried if my pool hash rate doesn't add up to what my individual card hash rates seem to tell me on sgminer?  I queried it and just got told don't worry its because its calculated by somethings.. not really an explanation now and I'm too new to know one way or the other
what's your settings for sgminer, just curious im about to use and im stil using cgminer... i dont know how to setup for scrypt mining... what kernel to use etc...

to be honest i'm still working it out, my currnet settings are

--lookup-gap 2 --thread-concurrency 8191,8191,8191 -g 2 -I 13 -w 256 --auto-fan --temp-cutoff 90,90,90, --temp-overheat 85,85,85 --temp-target 68,68,68, --gpu-memclock 1500,1500,1500 gpu-engine 1065,1065,1065 --expiry 1 --scan-time 1 --queue 0

and i have undervolted my Sapphire R9 280X Dual-X OC cards to 1100/1120/1100 which seems stable right now

I haven't played with clock speeds yet

My temps come out at 67/77/67 ( the 2nd card is right next to the 3rd, but I think 77 is an OK temp now.... anyone disagree?Huh)

Hashrates I think I'm getting 710/717/718 at max i've seen, not sure about an average yet as the numbers fluctuate pretty rapidly still rather than settling on a certain kh/s

Quick update- I did some more tests this weekend.

  • tried Powertune +20, this did pretty much nothing for me (but I'm not ruling it out, it may be configuration dependent. Will experiment with this again later)
  • tried --thread-concurrency 11200: Not really any improvement. I keep trying this because I read in a tutorial a few weeks ago that to find your optimal TC number, you should start your miner with no TC argument and then see what it defaults to (found in the file name of the BIN file that's generated). When I do this it always uses 22400. So- since I'm using -g 2 (two threads rather than one), it *should* be 11200 for me. But, apparently it's still not. (may try again later... or maybe tri 11199??)
  • tried --thread-concurrency 8191 again: BAM! Hashrates jumped up. Now running a pretty stable 705,710,720,700 avg. hash rates across GPU's 0,1,2,3. Has been running stable for 24+ hrs now.
  • 8191 required that I could no longer use the pre-generated 8192 BIN file that I mentioned in previous posts. Seems to have made little or no difference, which makes me wonder if it was really helping initially or not.

Current arguments are:
Code:
-I 13 -g 2 -w 256 --lookup-gap 2 --thread-concurrency 8191,8191,8191,8191 --gpu-memclock 1500,1500,1500,1500 --gpu-engine 1065,1075,1085,1065 --auto-fan --temp-cutoff 90,90,90,90 --temp-overheat 85,85,85,85 --temp-target 72,72,72,72 --expiry 1 --scan-time 1 --queue 0

Up next, going to experiment with...

  • Lowering the voltage via TRIXX to see if I'm dealing with an overheating and therefore throttling VRM issue.
  • Ways to increase my WU/s and see if I'm actually getting my money's worth out of my hashrate (if hashrate is doing awesome but WU/s is low, what's the point??)
  • Ways to reduce rejected shares (what's the point of having an awesome hashrate if the pool is rejecting your work...??)

Comments always welcome. Thanks for taking the journey with me!

See I'm even more a newbie than you. what does WU/s do or mean.  I've reduced the VDDC on my 3 cards to 1100/1120/1100 ( the middle card was prevolted at 1225 the 1st and 3rd at 1175 stock which might explain why its needs a high VDDC to remain stable.

What kernel file do you use?  I downloaded the 'optomised' .cl from your earlier post and put it in the kernel folder, but it always seems to use the "ckolivas.cl", if I only leave the optomised .cl file it won't work and putting in "kernel : scrypt130302" into my arguments means sgminer won't work.. so not sure what i'm doing there.

TC 8191 did seem to raise my hash rates up  707K/710kh/s  its the blue bit that i'm taking that from.  My numbers still seem to jump up and down alot though,  does this watcher program help give you an average so you can tell if it really goes up?

this may be a dumb question but my figures i see on screen fluctuate alot while i'm watching

when looking at for the hash rate my cards produce and I see    705.2K/710.8Kh/s  I am assuming its the rights side figure thats important the 710.8kh/s

Because sometimes the left side is higher and sometimes the right side figure is higher but it never stays around 1 figure for long enough for me to decide what i'm getting
73  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][TAG] TAGMining.Com- Try your chance at our weekly jackpot! on: February 18, 2014, 03:54:36 PM
I reduced the VDDC to 1100 on all 3 cards using VBE7, the 1131 cryptobadger suggested for his 280x cards wasn't an option on the drop down menu.  Now does anyone have some understanding off undervolting?  I've never tried it before.  My orginal VDDCs for each card were 1175/1225/1175.  I set them all at 1100 and at one point I was getting 710/724/724.. though it fluctuates.  Then card 1 started

It's basically finding an equillibrium between efficiency and stability, reducing the voltage the card needs to lower heat and sometimes increase or decreash hash in a stable fashion. You typically do it in slight increments per card to see what works best.

restarted.  Does it stand to reason that as it already had a VDDC that was higher than the other 2 cards (no idea why they are all the same card bought at the same time) I've set the VDDC too low on that particular card?  I'm going to try chaning the bios again tomorrow i think because the 1100 VDDC on that card clearly doesn't work.  Also has anyone set a VDDC lower than 110 on a 280x card. Or is it a case or changing it around untill the driver doesn't crash?

I don't undervolt but I understand it. Every card is different just because of component variance, even if you buy 10 of the same model/brand. Generally speaking same-model cards should have the same default operating voltages, so if you have 2 cards which have different "stock" voltages, make sure they're actually the same model.

Yes, you can undervolt too much and cause an issue. You typically want to do it in increments. Lots of people go in steps of .05, sometimes .1

Using VBE7 I only get a drop down menu to choose new figures from

1275, 1256, 1250, 1225, 1200, 1188, 1175, 1163, 1150, 1131, 1120, 1100 an so forth.

With TRIXX I can adjust it down by 1 unit.... not sure how 0.05 and 0.1 relates to these figures.  Later tonight I was just going to play around with VBE7 and the figures above increaseing to the next option higher on card 1 till it is stable

My cards are all the same model all Sapphire R9 280X DUAL-X OC version with the same sku and PN numbers on the label

Well I am no planning to attach a fan to the wall above pointing into the case, and leaving all the panels off. testing it i.e. holding it above the rig, seems to keep temps to the 70s C. some progress there and might enable me to leave the cards where they are.  I haven't decided if I can actually find a way of taking the middle card out and suspending it some how with risers.

Then card 1 started getting 800+  like this

http://prntscr.com/2ti12h

which as much as I wish I could get that stably I doubt thats right and the screen crashes and windows recovers from a driver failure with sgminer saying something about card 1 having a problem and can't be restarted. Yes I have and it got it working. I was just removing things and trying it and removing the kernel bit did the trick,  So now i'm wondering if I delete all the other .cl files and just leave the optomised .cl file that i downloaded for my card in the kernel directory

I also have to flash the bios on the cards yet.  but I was getting 2 cards at about 707kh/s and 1 at 680 kh/s, this is an improvement on the cgminer results.  temps are about 70/81/78 but as you can see from the picture cards 2 + 3 are very close together.  I found a fan I can attach to the wall (box fan) which seems to get the temps i mentioned rather than a pc smouldering 90C so I'm hoping with the undervolting the temps will be more stable and I can start fine tuning the settings

I followed this thread as it got him decent results with my cards

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=453067.20

I've got a complied version of sgminer, downloaded his .cl file and .bin file and written the .bat file like his (as below) and all I get is "unexpected extra commandline arguments" from sgminer.. Why?

that thread has --lookup-gap 2 in his .bat file as well, though that has already been pointed out it doesn't need to be there, but I get the same problem whether its included or not.  The kernel file is simply the name of the kernel file, but again i've tried the zuikkis.cl and that doesn't change anything.  So where am I going wrong.. still...

EDIT: deleting the kernel : scrypt130302 allowed sgminer to work. Does that mean I should delete all the kernel files that i don't sgminer to use so it will only be allowed to use this 'optomised' .cl file ( backing the others up somewhere of course)

As a side note why is it on my pickaxe pool dashboard does my hashrate never add up to what I'm apparently getting from my GPUs?
