61  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Running BItcoin Core in Dubai on: April 28, 2019, 02:43:43 PM
hi there,

I just understood that WhatsApp and Skype are blocked in UAE / Dubai... what about bitcoin core? can you run it?

it seems they also don't like people running VPNs...

anyone had experience with that ?

thanks,
Gabrio

I don't think so. It seems to be something that occurs regularly..

Yes. You can ignore this.

This means that some miners have mined (still compatible) blocks with a version number unknown to Bitcoin Core.

Generally this indicates that some miners have mined blocks that signal non Bitcoin Core compatible soft- or hard-forks. Very likely a 2MB hardfork after BIP109 implemented by Bitcoin Classic.
And generally means nothing special really..

thanks!

hi guys,

I was just syncing my Bitcoin Core, which I usually do on regular basis and I just noticed this message at the top:

Warning: Unknown block versions being mined! It's possible unknown rules are in effect.

Do I need to worry about that? What does it mean? It seems is syncing as usual...

thanks,

Everything back to normal - correct balance updated at the end of the sync!

Great news!

It's the 3rd time I get the database corrupt though, is there anything that can be done as a maintenance to prevent this? Or is it due to the fact that I keep it on external hdd and sometimes that happens? With that plug/unplug devices, etc

I'm 99% sure that the issue is caused by the external HDD.

Two things to start with would be:
1. After closing Bitcoin wallet, check with task manager it was indeed closed (check, but not kill).
2. Use the "safely eject" functionality and wait for "it's now safe to" before unplugging.

Maybe some will hate me for this advice, but if you don't need Bitcoin core wallet, maybe you could use a SPV wallet (Electrum), or at lest use Bitcoin wallet in pruned mode (much smaller blockchain), on the internal HDD.
I think that you can also set in your system for external HDD (or USBs) to make it safer for unplugging, but I expect that'll make the data transfer much slower (and not sure how it can be done).

thanks for the tips!

You just need to wait for Core to re-sync, that's all.
1.5 days, so that's about 210+ blocks and if the previous transaction was new, that might be the cause of the "weird balance".

If you want some assurance about you wallet's balance, check the address' balance on an online blockexplorer like: liveblockcypher.com or blockchain.com/explorer.

btw how do I check my wallet's balance on the blockchain.com ? shall I use the last address I sent payment to?

thanks

1. Open list of bitcoin address generated by your wallet (You can find it by select File > Receiving addresses)
2. Copy each bitcoin address listed and paste into blockchain.com (or other block explorer) search bar

thanks, sent you a PM.

69  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Database Corrupt and recovering question on: March 31, 2019, 09:01:02 AM
hi there,

I am running bitcoin-0.17.1-win64-setup, the other day I sent a transaction, went in the pool and stayed there for a while (I was a bit stingy with the fee have to say), anyway, after that, while waiting Bitcoin core to catch up, had a database corruption on the external hdd since i had to unplug it or something (shut down Core of course, but it was not finished with the syncing) where I keep bitcoin files and the blockchain's stuff... btw i got that transaction where it had to be so it's in the chain OK.

Long story short, after a few re-starts to see if it would catch up, it would say database corrupt, so I hit OK and is reprocessing all blocks starting with a 0 balance wallet - not re downloading the entire blockchain - have seen the log, and it's about 1.5 days, I reckon today it will complete....wallet balance is weird right now.

Main thing is how to handle the wallet, is it going to catch up when it picks up last transaction before I got the corruption in the database and all be back OK?

OR shall I restore the last wallet (pre latest transaction) when it finishes catching up?

many thanks,
Gabrio

list of transactions are all there so it's under Sent and Receive, all looks normal there.
71  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Just lauched bitcoin core as usual and database errorr on: October 23, 2018, 08:55:28 AM
hi guys

I just launched bitcoin core as usual and I got a database error, can't remember if it said corrupted or what...anyway, I keep my core on an external hard disk and I feel sometimes the cable bends so the connection isn't 100%... long story short it's now reindexing blocks on disk... which doesn't mean downloading the whole chain right?

I can see wallet balace to 0 but there's a list of recent transactions which are right, so it's just a matter of waiting, yeah?Huh in case I have an old wallet backed up!

always living on the edge with bitcoin! hehehehe

thanks,
Gabrio

Hey,

where do I find the most recent blk*.dat and rev*.dat files??

I run Bitcoind (wallet only through terminal)
Thanks.

they are in the /blocks folder if you are running bitcoin core. not sure whether or not Bitcoind is part of bitcoin core though.
73  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: bitcoin core slow sync today? on: August 12, 2018, 02:17:38 PM
Hi

You might try what worked for me... bear in mind it will reindex the chain which took about 2 days in total. First pass goes fast then the next one takes longer.

I did the "deleting the most recent blk*.dat and rev*.dat files"
74  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: bitcoin core slow sync today? on: July 31, 2018, 09:07:39 AM
hi guys

it seems to have worked, it was syncing all day, now left at 25 weeks behind, so far so good... hopefully also the newest transactions will work OK

Great to hear! Let us know when you get up to 100%.

it's complete now, finished and all back to normal.

The problem is that your node is rejecting block 533816 which means that any node which attempts to give it that block or any of its descendants will be disconnected from immediately.

Open the Debug Console (Help > Debug Window > Console) and then enter this command: reconsiderblock 0000000000000000001f642d24d3968eeef81460531346adbfb9882dd711ed45. If it returns with null, then the block was accepted and you should be able to connect to nodes and sync the rest of the blockchain.

Otherwise, start Bitcoin Core with the -reindex-chainstate option. That will reindex the chainstate (not quite as bad as a full reindex) and that should also fix the problem.

If all else fails, deleting the most recent blk*.dat and rev*.dat files and then starting Bitcoin Core should work too. That will trigger a full reindex as well as redownload the most recent blocks.

thanks a lot, actually I did the "deleting the most recent blk*.dat and rev*.dat files", it took 2 hours and 30 minutes for the database, now doing the "processing blocks on disk" and seems to work......I reckon other few hours for this round and let's see...thanks!

In safe mode now and it seems exactly the same... teued to get connections for a bit then blinks then off again.

The whole chain? Well im on a 17mbit connection.. that will be long.

Any other ideas?  Oh actually the pc went to standby when i was home without shutting down the core client .. laptop ... altho that happened before.

Thank you

It won't redownload the chain it will run back through it but it will still take quite a long time to do that.

If by standby you mean hybernate then that shouldn't be the cause of the issue.

I'd suggest waiting between a few hours a day for someone who can work out the exact error in the debug.logs that you have provided as they should be indepth enough for someone who knows more about the source code of bitcoin core.

Right that makes sense.....now deciding whether doing that re-download thing (if that is at all a viable option) or doing something else... in that case.. ANY EXPERT around???

thanks for all your help jackg anyway!

What does it say at the bottom of the screen next to the loading bar?

Is is saying that it is syncronising with blocks or "no block source avaliable" etc...

it seems as "normal" although I see 0 connections, sometimes it goes to 8 then goes away....

So it's sticking on connecting to peers according to that, do you have any new firewalls that could be blocking it (or your ISP) although it's not even loading up the list of peers that they normally have...

nothing new really... I tried to use a proxy just earlier but no difference, I can see that there is network traffic, like 3MB... this is very odd.. on another forum someone suggested to delete the latest blk and rev file.. what u think of that? thank you

If you do that it'll reindex your entire blockchain.

How long did it take to sync, as it'll do all of that again?

I'd sooner suggest booting your computer in "safe mode with networking" and run your bitcoin core to see that it definitely isn't a firewall issue.
