61  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Losers on: June 11, 2014, 07:24:13 PM
from most of the stories i hear about people losing a lot of money with bitcoin, it can usually be singled out to buying after a large run-up, and it never makes sense for me. you're late to the party, so you try to overcompensate by buying bitcoin at an ATH.. only to find out that it's heading down. i sure as hell wouldn't have bought bitcoin when it was $1100.. after jumping from $110 within a 6 week window.
That's true of buying into any investment. If you don't put the work into making estimates or at least guesstimates of an investments true value and potential then you deserve whatever happens to your money.

At the time of Gox my best guess was that the floor was around $125. I was prepared to buy more at each $100 mark and really press under $200. I missed a few marks as the price fell fast. And it never reached even close to my floor. I tend to be conservative as I like my money and I'm not greedy. I never cry about opportunity missed and try obsessively to understand what I missed when I make a misstep.

Patience, hard work and due diligence. And avoid blaming outside forces. The keys to success in anything.
62  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Losers on: June 11, 2014, 07:09:16 PM
Anyone else feel like one of the bitcoin losers? We hear a lot about all the winners, now including some 15 year old child, but very little on the currency's losers. I got swept up in the mania last November and dared to invest my life saving into purchasing 1 bitcoin, just as it was near peak. That turned out to be a terrible purchase for me as the value dropped since, so bitcoin has only ever lost me money. Anyone else in my boots? I'd still like more bitcoins but going on my past 6 months my confidence and trust in this new currency has been shattered.   Cry
Seriously, people like you shouldn't invest. EVER. IN ANYTHING.
You put money you really need in an asset that is highly speculative.
Now, you cry, because you are not a millionaire after 6 months.

6 months are nothing for an investment.

Where did I ask to be a millionaire? There was a lot of hype at the end of last year and I invested for my families future not to be some sort of spiv.
The "I have a family to feed"-"argument" doesn't change anything. You obviously just wanted quick money without working for it.
You gambled on a horse race. Your horse had a bad start. Now, you cry about the money you lost, even though the race is far from over.

Again, nowhere have I said that I wanted quick money for anything nor pleaded that I have a family to feed as those expenses are covered with my day job. I repeat I invested for my families FUTURE not be some sort of spiv and I'm interested in hearing from people in a similar situation to myself. Not people like you who are trying to put words in my mouth.
I was going to write something lengthy addressing the many things I find offensive about this post. But I'm going to keep this short as you have already expressed a complete lack of interest in hearing from anyone who might offer information from the perspective of success.

You started your own business, for which I commend you. You give no information but it sounds like you were under capitalized and when a downturn occurred you could not ride it out. Did you study what had occurred or did you just blame the downturn?

You stated that you bought bitcoin near the peak. Had you done any research on what bitcoin was and how market forces work or were you just being led by the hype?

And now you state that you don't want to hear from any of the successful people. You are demanding to converse only with the losers.

Are you seeing a pattern yet? Most successful people start off making a lot of mistakes. The key is they analyze what went wrong and learn from them.

BTW, you haven't lost any money. Losing money occurs when you buy high and sell low. Until you sell you have only lost potential and it makes no difference where value is at a given instance as long as you don't sell. I'd advise buying more when it is lower (now) but you've already said that you invested your 'life savings.' You might also want to analyze that decision.

Random generated. Too tidy for someone under drug effects and no message whatsoever. Someone wrote alot of words / expressions and put some very simple script to work to make it as random as it gets. I call it bad SEO attempt (that works more or less) in some degree.

To what end? I didn't go all the way to the but I didn't see any ads to be clicked.
Sorry, I'm not very knowledgeable in this area. But always curious about everything.

I can't figure out if this is another program failing the Turing test, output from a much longer version of the Bitcoin Bullshit Generator or proof you should never post really really high.

Not a single sentence that is correct factually or syntactically.

“[I'm] looking forward to the new world of virtual payment choice, which I believe can be the future of global virtual currency that people might embrace, especially the Gen Y.”

“I am holding the bitcoin. Because having a very big confidence the price of bitcoin is not the rates of today USD 650, should be higher than this price very soon.”

Very nice to see a huge player have such confidence in the currency.
67  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ebay CEO finally surrender to Bitcoin on: June 06, 2014, 04:35:51 PM
I think that it is a bit problematic for ebay to allow payments in bitcoin because it will reduce the usege in paypal and paypal will not let it happen
I haven't been on eBay in over a decade so things might have changed but how would letting the sellers accept bitcoin be any different from letting them accept MC/Visa as far as PayPal is concerned?
68  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How die hard are you? on: June 06, 2014, 03:17:00 PM
Ok, let's assume that the following scenario is actually possible, I would like to know how you feel when all these thing happen at the same time:

Bitcoin is under a 66% attack (double spends are happening)
Is also banned by the US, Russian, EU and China government by threat of 30 years jail time.
The real satoshi (proven by something) is found dead, killed.
Uh, you mean 51% attack?
No actually 66,6% attack
Whats the difference between a 51% attack and 66.6% attack?

15,6%
I'm not sure why but that really made me laugh. Thanks.

70  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best way to hedge against BTC value movements. Bitcoin futures / options? on: June 05, 2014, 07:55:26 PM
Let's say I want to have an "insurance" so that 1 or 2 days from now I'll be able to buy Bitcoins at today's price, paying a small premium for this insurance.

What is the best way to currently do so? I have been looking at several options on the market but I can't seem to find the solution yet:

- Icbit.se: unclear operation and as far as I can see, futures are for longer timespans (3-6 months away)
- 796.com: seems good with tight spreads but settlement is only once per week

Any other suggestions/strategies?

While the blockchain protocol seems to contain all the needed functionality (not that I am even close to an expert) to make short and put options a reality as far as I know no exchange has yet implemented options. I've been waiting for this myself as I think it would remove a lot of volatility from the value of bitcoin by letting investors limit their exposure.

A lot of people that want bitcoin to only be a currency are against such features being developed. I think lowered volatility is vital to it being more accepted as a currency.
71  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Height of Greed- Deny Satoshi's Bitcoin on: June 05, 2014, 03:53:11 PM
If coins held by Satoshi is destroyed/denied my democracy called Bitcoin. I'm sure, everybody gains. And every rational human being tries to maximize profits. So why aren't they denying his fortune which in fact is no use( Of if it is used in future, it would only cause instability to Bitcoin economy)
Why not people are working on it?
Is Bitcoin truly democratic? Tongue

Genius like him are never into money. What good is money for him?. Wink

Out of curiosity what is your native language?

Hindi! Any comments? Please, feel free to speak out your curiosity.
If I was a little more awake I would have noticed your user name  Smiley
Thank you for your swift answer. I've gotten pretty good at placing native language by unusual sentence structure, but I didn't have a clue here. Thank you for indulging my curiosity.

Back OT: having created a world changing technology I think he is entitled to whatever he can make from it. I don't see how his using it would destabilize bitcoin any more than any one else doing so.
72  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What stops a Federal Reserve crypto scheme of their own? on: June 05, 2014, 03:43:52 PM
Please discuss.  I mentioned it in another thread and felt compelled to raise a new topic.

Just a little heads up, folks.  They are not subject to FOIA like a government agency.  But they have all government agencies at their disposal.  So, why hasn't anyone pointed out the obvious.  The medium they choose can be theirs, BTC, alt, or Doge (for the love of dogs everywhere).  This is brewing as we speak.
Because a centralized decentralized monetary system makes no sense. And if they don't centralize it than it becomes difficult - other than by whatever initial coins they deem as theirs - to make a profit of it. And if they aren't doing that then they are just undercutting their other profit making mechanisms.

If they do try to profitize it than other alt coins make more sense and as the Fed's indirect regulatory power extends only to the US the other cheaper coins would flourish overseas and underground in the US.

Yeah, but do could a stash of cash under your bed too if your wife doesn't know about it  Cheesy.

"A number of forums devoted to Bitcoin have been filled with husbands discussing the option of using digital currencies, a London divorce lawyer has claimed."

There's been a few discussions about it on here too.

No different than what they've been doing with offshore accounts for decades.
75  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The problem with Bitcoin is on: June 03, 2014, 09:25:40 PM
I think another problem is, that it's using alot of electricity, that is bad for the world.
Especially when alot more people are going to mine it, I mean it's already gettin more every day.
Maybe one of the eco friendly coins are a help with that, or bitcoin could implement something to reduce electricity use.
Okay, we build a device to turn the excess heat into electricity and using experimental "grounding" technology we funnel this electricity into the Earth to combat AGW.

I think I've covered all my green bases. Where do I collect my government grant funds?

Got to go, trying to think like a politician has giving me a headache.
76  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If Bitcoin Wants Serious Investment, It NEEDS Options Trading on: June 03, 2014, 09:06:55 PM
There is already enough speculation with Bitcoin. We don't Need another tool for more speculators, even if you call them Investors instead of speculators.
You want to invest in Bitcoin? Invest the little time that is needed to implement a solution for your customers to pay with Bitcoin. That's all Bitcoin really need.
The goal of Bitcoins is to become a currency, not to stay a commodity.
That is not my area of expertise. I highly encourage those that are capable to help expand bitcoin's acceptance as a currency. However back in the current reality it is the investors that are driving the value. If bitcoin's value was still around $25 there would never have been the interest (good and bad) that has propelled bitcoin forward toward becoming a currency. Admittedly there is a potentially valid point of view that it has become too noticed too soon. But I'll leave that discussion for someone else.

I plan to do my part as an investor (not the same as a hoarder) and hope others take advantage of that raised profile to further position it as a currency. When it is advantageous beyond just conceptually to use it as a currency, I will do so.

But we all have our parts to play.
77  Economy / Speculation / Re: When will Bitcoin reach $1 again? on: June 03, 2014, 08:26:51 PM
Probably tomorrow when the big bad news hits....

Hi florica, welcome to the forum.  Smiley
Did you know there has been a constant flood of good news about Bitcoin lately?
Just look around and enjoy...

Have you noticed on the forum that when the news about btc is predominately good, the value goes up, and when it is not good the value goes down? Just something I observed..

Have you noticed that more it is talked about, good or bad, the more folks have heard about it and more places start accepting it? Bad news always scares nervous investors (those that don't understand their investment) but this helps us to determine the true floor. Currently this appears to be around $400. That is up substantially from before this year of news coverage.
78  Economy / Speculation / Re: When will Bitcoin reach $1 again? on: June 03, 2014, 08:23:19 PM
Bitcoin might lose 99.9% of its value at some time, but we're almost sure that the dollar has lost more of its value by then. The USD seem to lose 70% of its value every 100 years or so.
$100 in 2012 had the purchasing power that $3.48 had in 1900. A loss of 96.4% in buying power.
79  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If Bitcoin Wants Serious Investment, It NEEDS Options Trading on: June 03, 2014, 01:02:04 PM
I can see a good financial services market in bit coin but we don't have to use to imitate all of the bad ideas in fiat currency. If you want to hold a position in bit coin buy some bit coin.
If you are in the group which treats bitcoin as a commodity, as an investment vehicle, which I think is by far the largest group for now until more of the marketplace begins to accept it, options become a great avenue for more people to invest.

All an option is is the option to buy or sell at a set price within a set time frame. It's a bet placed against someone else willing to make the opposite bet. But the effect it has is being able to limit your risk. So if a person is staying away from bitcoin because he has been told it could be worth nothing tomorrow, this is a way for him to invest without that concern. Once he has done this a few times he might have enough confidence in bitcoin to buy some for real.

Options have nothing to do with derivatives. Options are a wonderful investment mechanism and I think would be very good for bitcoin being accepted by a wider range of investors.
80  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Bullshit Generator on: June 02, 2014, 11:12:30 PM
Bitcoin will ultimately fail unless we recontextualize trust-free addresses. Until such time my efforts will be to cultivate proof-of-stake meta coins.

Only if we facilitate private-key private keys to mine global paper wallets!
Yeah those public-key private keys are a big security problem.
