61  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: HOWTO create a bootable usb Bitcoin wallet in 4 easy steps on: September 06, 2011, 04:17:47 PM
Oh great.  More worries.  Is there not a way to check this? Can someone not open this up and check the code to make sure there are no backdoors sending wallet keys to the maker?

LinuxCoin was created by drG33n and Im sure hell come here to solve any doubts you have. The official thread is here and so far is widely used and no one has complained.

Oh....! OH!   drG33n!!!!  What was I thinking!?  Thank God!  Now I know it's secure.  Now my mom and sister and family feel safe buying bitcoins and using this client! For a second there I thought it might have been written been J3lllE_Nz or smAH{{yfheeTz  or  Wyh0reMAHZMAHZpwnzCR@KzzR00K

Thanks god we have that solved and know for sure it's safe now written by drG33n.

(sarcasm note)

I'm just being funny no offense to drG33n, this is not a troll.  He put some work into what appears to be a great tool, but seriously for those not in the linux ubuntu scene is this thing open source and checkable by others?

Also why it is safer to order from within your region so nothing has to go through customs.

I get that - but then there is no need of all this bootable stuff... just create a new wallet and offline store it and send coins to it as it is buried in Michael Jackson's basement.

66  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: HOWTO create a bootable usb Bitcoin wallet in 4 easy steps on: September 05, 2011, 05:28:40 PM
Question on this...  you set it up, boot from it, create a new wallet, and now you want to send coins to it, but how do you get
coins to it if you are not online with it?  Or am I misinterpreting your statement do not browse the web with it....

A Bitcoin client/wallet doesn't need to be running or online in any way to receive funds. You can bury it in the backyard for ten years, sending BTC to it periodically, and upon retrieval it will update the block chain and discover your funds there waiting for you =)

So, you only need to be "plugged in" when sending money out.

"upon retrieval" you mean you have to connect it to the internet...to retrieve...  that's what I am talking about.  Does this install connect to the net or not?

I would like to have a bootable version with few coins that I use and can bring with me like a usb on a keychain, and then a "buried in the backyard" one as you say.

The currency is NOT totally anonymous unless certain steps are taken you connect your reputation to an identify on almost all the current ways of trading bitcoin.  With certain tumblers and what not you can achieve almost total anonymity but not absolute because of the traceable nature of transactions.  It is you who are clueless if you think bitcoin is completely anon.

Probably nothing would happen and you would be fine, but as far as I know if you are ordering a bulky package and silk road is involved this is probably not a good idea.  This should be able to be left in your mail box.

69  Economy / Speculation / Re: How much daily transaction volume does The Silk Road see? on: September 05, 2011, 05:07:16 PM
Why does picking up a package make it more suspicious? I order things off ebay that ship internationally and forget about them all the time. 3 months later I get a little notice in my mail that says I have a package, by that time I usually have no idea what I've received, but I go to pick it up anyway, whats to prove that package wasn't sent to me without my knowledge?
Hmm, okay i'll spell it out... slowly... if you pick a package up, it shows you ordered it.

If you get a package in your mailbox containing drugs the police will not be able to prove that you ordered it, someone could have mailed it to you with malicious intent.

If you pick a package up from the post office at a "poste restante" it makes it clear that :
 - you were expecting the package
 - you took steps to hide the link between the package and you

So, someone ships me drugs without my knowledge, I receive a notice in my mailbox that I have a package, I assume its an ebay package and go pick it up. Somehow there is proof that I ordered drugs?

You could argue your case, but why bother with a step that induces more. not less, risk?  You going to pick up a package
that you had sent on purpose to a PO box or to have held at the post office is more dangerous than just sending it to your house because it LOOKS like you intended and were aware of the package by going to pick it up.  Why would you go and pick it up if you were not expecting it.  Yes, you could make your argument, but it is foolish.  When you go to the post office to pick things up you have to sign for it and this is just not a good idea if you want to use a site such as we are discussing.

When you boot from this will your broadband connection still work? Doesn't it have to to get the client to run to get any coins you send to it?

I guess I'll just run it and find out.  Thanks for the help.

71  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can you install the whole bitcoin client on a usb stick? on: September 05, 2011, 04:29:20 PM
First of all, it is not secure to attach an USB stick to another PC where you don't know the security standards.

Anyways: Check the "datadir" command line setting (maybe with relative paths like . or ..).

As you need internet connection at your frined's place anyways, I'd recommend an online wallet with a bit of "cash" - you don't carry your whole savings account with you if you just want to buy an ice cream too, right? Alternatively you could set up a second bitcoin client on that USB stick and only transfer a bit of money there.

Well.. people carry around their bank debt cards which allows them access....  or a certain amount of cash.  I want to do the quivilant with btc.

Yes I realize your security point and obviously I would be carrying around an amount on this stick that I am comfortable with not some
ginormous amount of coin.  I don't have a ginormous amount.

I'll check into the above guide I just wanted to understand if/how this could be done.

72  Economy / Speculation / Re: How much daily transaction volume does The Silk Road see? on: September 05, 2011, 04:21:18 PM
Basically, if you are going to engage in ordering something I would follow the guidelines and send it to a real address you have access to not somewhere you have to sign and pick it up. It works and is fairly safe for small amounts of things and the worst  and more realistic case scenario would be that it would get confiscated in the middle and you just don't get what you ordered and lose a few btc, not some sting operation for a minuscule amount, if you're not silly and order some ridiculous amount of something - if that's the case go move to Portugal where everything is legal.

Let me state again that I am not endorsing using silk road, but I like the idea of freedom.

I support individuals right to freedom and don't think drugs should be criminalized, especially non addictive or psychedelic shamanic ones.  It is a constant amusement to me that alcohol is legal and pot and mushrooms are illegal. That all these deadly anti-depressants and benzos are legal yet sacred plants that can help you are illegal.  I don't even smoke but I can see that it clearly should be legal.  I've been attacked or annoyed by a nutty drunkard plenty of times but really, when has a stoner ever done anything violent other than maybe eat all of your snacks?

That's a stretch but if you makes you feel important knock yourself out.

Never said anything about feeling important.  Simply stated that the log shows the Davis person admitting guilt and being a jackass and that a good course of action would just be to release his info so no one ever does any trading with him again at minimum and at maximum someone might do something not so nice.  I just do think the tone of this thread, that it's cool that he did what he did and you're f&^cked because you use bitcoins is cool on any level and shouldn't be encouraged - legal argument or not.

74  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Can you install the whole bitcoin client on a usb stick? on: September 05, 2011, 02:02:11 PM
Ok I get the wallet / key thing now and backup up, renaming, encrypting, and creating new wallet.dat files to store away multiple wallets...

I toy with the android app but it seems I bit sketchy I don't trust it too much.

Can you install the entire bitcoin client / wallet on a usb stick? Is this explained somewhere?

I have tried to but it always put's the wallet in the same place on Win 7... ... yes.... I know, I know - run linux but this is not always practical.

How would you bring your bitcoins along with you and spend them using another computer? Is there ANY secure way to do this
other than bringing an entire bootable os installed on a usb key and is that even secure?

Say I go over to a friends house or a meet and I want to use my bitcoins on their machine to show them.... how would I do this without an online wallet service or ridiculous and dangerous wallet file swapping...

?

Wasn't that supposedly figured out and the issue is done with? I don't see Bruce on here organizing anything anymore.

Post the log, and post the takers personal details.  That is the only recourse and some of these so called 'nerds' can cause some serious havok if the want to.  Need I mention lulz?  They did quite amazing things and accepted bitcoin donations.

lulz has what to do with this forum again?

Bitcoin was lulz primary form of payment.... and this is a _________ forum? Come on smarty pants you can figure out the answer!  Good troll! Good little troll!  Now go away.

Jeeze...

76  Economy / Speculation / Re: How much daily transaction volume does The Silk Road see? on: September 05, 2011, 01:42:34 PM
If they go pick a package up at a post office they can't claim it was mailed to them without their knowledge in case the cops are also at the post office.

True, but the risk would seem pretty low to me unless you're buying something that warrants the police staking the post office out for two weeks or however long they hold unclaimed parcels.

That's not the point.  The point is that IF using this method for something you shouldn't be mailing (which of course you would never do)

#1 it looks more suspicious
#2 makes you absolutely liable because you go and provide identity and sign for the parcel

Bad news bears all around.

77  Economy / Speculation / Re: How much daily transaction volume does The Silk Road see? on: September 04, 2011, 05:46:35 PM
I can confirm that a friend tried silk road and got what he ordered.  I myself was surprised.
The question is what is stopping some government agency from creating an account, creating fake buyers,
buying up to get a 100 rep, and then targeting all addresses that buy?

Money I suppose.  Is the FBI really going to waste time sending an agent to someone's house who bought a few tabs of blotter worth under $50?  The pay for the agent is so much more the economics don't work out.  Also, if one followed the rules one would not send to one's primary residence and not to their name, and there would be no way to prosecute since anyone can mail you anything and this does not prove you ordered it.  Again - to go into the manpower involved in the digital forensics would ONLY be worthy for some HUGE purchase or shipment, not a small order.

NOTE: All the above is fictional discussion.

Problem not solved. Huge market avoided...

Problem solved = a way to sell those bitcoins to that market safely.
