Scrouge Mc TruePrimernaire is funny. It's dead! Dead I tell you! That's why I use my company servers to mine it.  Huh  Shocked Cheesy
62  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: February 05, 2016, 11:30:56 AM

Nice! I will look forward to getting that up and running later this year. LMDB, Ring-CT, and plugin flexibility in a GUI. Maturing...
63  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: January 08, 2016, 04:05:27 PM
I beat Dr. Bookmarks to it (aka Debruyne)!

https://forum.getmonero.org/8/funding-required/2450/ring-ct-c-crypto

A Noether is asking for funding for the ring confidential transaction stuff!!!!

2375 of 3150 XMR funded in 5 hours. Impressive. I can't use my wallet until Monday, but I'll throw a few XMR into the hat if any are still needed (which looks doubtful with this progress).

64  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: -> Monero Community Hall of Fame <- on: December 21, 2015, 02:43:32 PM
Should there be two new Dans added to the Hall of Fame? Sticking with what the current setup is it would look like 9th Dan would be 10,000 XMR, and 10th Dan would be 25,000 XMR. I think Articmine is the only member of 9th Dan.

I'm not sure if diamonds would be adequate for these Dans, can anyone think of something more luxurious?  Cheesy

I would love to see more people donate. Donations feed the progress of our beloved XMR, and that will make it worth that much more. Cheesy

How about endohedral fullerenes, currently priced at £110 million per gram:

Can we please fix ajiekceu4 with 7666 XMR. He or she belongs in 8th Dan and should also be recognized on https://getmonero.org/getting-started/donate/ with the other 8th Dans and above. Thanks

Good call. ajiekceu4 should be removed from the 5th Dan list too.

As mentioned, there are GUIs available. I actually prefer jwinterm's light wallet.
https://forum.getmonero.org/20/general-discussion/166/lightwallet-a-lightweight-monero-gui-account-manager

As do I.

Quote
I really, truly, do not understand the "official" GUI thing. How many people use the official bitcoin GUI? The best I can muster, I think the GUI thing is at best a red herring or at worst something monerians tell themselves for comfort regarding the price.

IMHO, the official part matters more earlier than later, and I'd argue it also matters more for a privacy focussed coin like Monero. Solidity over style is good. I'm absolutely fine with the GUI being lower priority than the database, but ease of use in general matters.

Quote
If one is truly concerned about price, then the best investment of time is probably into merchant integrations. Hell, the reason monero isn't on ALL of the exchanges is because 1) the "official" binaries eat your memory and 2) in general its so different than bitcoin these exchange sharks don't want to deal with it. If there was a detailed, step-by step guide on how to accept monero deposits *and* execute withdrawals *and* the official release only used 50 MB of memory, it would pop up more places.

Ultimately it takes so much more time because its not really important,  - so exactly what was said about prioritization. And as I've mentioned before, the prioritization chosen has direct effects on the security of the network. Imagine if the core team *had* continued on its work with the GUI as its #1 priority.... presumably, based on the logic of everyone that pines for a GUI, the introduction of the GUI would cause a massive surge in adoption. THis surge in adoption would then cause the blockchain to grow at a much faster rate than it already did. So now the blockchain is 10 gigs, and 5 people can run nodes....

the move of the blockchain to the database increases the security of the network by increasing node count and distribution (read = not datacenter), and as this is a financial network, this is *the* most important thing.

Focusing on the GUI is like if Ferrari spent their time focusing on the steering wheel. They don't.

A GUI is all of the interface, and the appearance - so that's the Ferrari's sleek exterior and interior etc, etc.

Perhaps only peripherally important for Monero but this news story is doing the rounds today. Example:

http://news.sky.com/story/1602546/police-raid-after-bitcoin-creator-revealed

Quote
Police have raided the Sydney home of a man named as the likely creator of cryptocurrency bitcoin, according to the Reuters news agency

Quote
However the police force said in a statement that the move was not linked to "media reporting ... about bitcoins".

Instead it directed all inquiries to the Australian Tax Office, suggesting the raid could be linked to tax issues.

The price is getting lower because buy volume is lower than sell volume  Grin

Nothing is special about it. Lack of new user, holders just had enough and don't want to buy more, inflation is still high

To put the bold in context, daily inflation is about 0.1% currently and monthly is 3%. Falling fast.

69  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XMR] Monero - Marketing Team & Tactics on: December 08, 2015, 12:35:57 PM
I was not mistaken that is what all of you told me the last time Monero drama kicked up a year earlier.
Remember ?
How there was a backlash on this forum over Monero "Marketing"
Please do say "i forget" so i have an excuse to go dig up all those old topics Wink

Can you link to a post where a Monero core Dev said Monero was a "clone coin from the cloning platform"?
70  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Monero vs Boolberry Chess Challenge and CryptoNote technical discussion on: December 04, 2015, 04:55:04 PM
Your post history suggests you have a great interest in CryptoNote so that comment is hard to understand coming from you.  You know demand for privacy is far more than a small niche. Why else would you spend so much time involving yourself with privacy related coins?

I was really into privacy back then. CryptoNote was a radically fresh approach a couple of years ago when I saw it. I was growing more interested in crypto scene, but I seemed to be overlooking the way the technology is adopted and what drives large corporations. I reconsidered a lot of things since then.

Yet, I like CN as a technology, and I did get quite knowledgeable in it during the last years.

So, are you out of Bytecoin now (i.e. own none), Rias? Just curious.

Just to confirm, Lightwallet does work for me with the Win64 0.9 beta bitmonerod.
I'd have thought Linux users in general are more likely to be happy on the command line.
Not sure about Mac's
72  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [NEWS] Monero David Latapie French Police Fraud [updated] on: December 02, 2015, 02:37:04 PM
So that's three Monero hate threads on the first page here now. Can't say the same for any other coin. Thanks for your concern guys, but Monero is doing just fine.
73  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency - 0.8.8.6 on: November 27, 2015, 01:53:22 PM

you can set download and upload rate limits with a startup flag on the daemon. The new release doesn't change the bandwidth usage per se.

but ultimately, the amount of data being dloaded and uplodaded is going to depend on how much traffic is on the network!! if there's enough traffic to force blocks up to a constant 50 kb, then there would be significantly more bandwidth usage.

Although that would be an interesting option / feature. I setting to make a data cap for capped people, so say you know you can only afford to give 1 gb of data transfer for monero, then once that amount is reached.... the daemon stops? Hrm, but then you just run into the same problem every month

Thanks. I will look into the rate limits.

I remember discussion quite a while ago in which it was stated that bandwidth would be used up to whatever was available and that it wasn't necessary to do so.  I believe this is where the bandwidth rate limits came from.  Maybe this is where Quicken' question came from.

I haven't looked closely since the 0.9 beta but with 0.8.6.6 it used to max out my bandwidth.  I have a fast connection with no monthly limit.  I am now syncing 0.9 to compare.

Yes, I have a metered broadband connection at home and foolishly launched the daemon with over 150 days to catch up yesterday - promptly hitting my broadband cap two weeks early - oops. It must have used several GB (unsure exactly how much as my supplier is useless with available stats). I need to look into general utilities to limit total daily data usage.

Currently syncing up the 0.9 beta at work.. just finished actually while I was typing the reply (height 844220). Very smooth. Lightwallet syncing now...

EDIT - synced @844226. All very nice. Side note - how about a 1 million blocks celebration?

THE TIME IS NOW !

These centralized exchanges just don't work.
I don't mean in some philosophical kind of way either.. i mean they are broken.
Trying sending coins.. cross your fingers Wink

Wait, you're posting in the Monero Speculation thread now? Who are you and what have you done with Spoetnik?

Could anyone share some stats on what the bandwidth usage is like for running bitmonerod 0.9 vs 0.8.8.6?

Obviously the RAM requirement is a big plus; just wondering how it looks for metered connections (GB/month).

OK, I gave the items to CHURCH (hope that works). Sold the Gold medal to Jacket (for the museum). Only the house/land remains. Open air museum sounds good.

Quentin Moon's everything must go sale has progressed well, and he now feels confident that his affairs will be in order by the time of the impending health challenge. All gold coins have now sold, and Angus has picked up assorted bargains. :-)

For previous kindness, Quentin would like to donate some items to the prince-bishop. Is there a list of usernames to enable gifts?

Just two remaining items for sale:
1) A rare, ancient, and most elaborate gold medal (100 CKG) [GOO-48]
2) A desirable, very centrally located house on a 300 sqm plot (ripe for redevelopment) [1-N-H3]

MEAT certainly seems to be important. Saddam, Riddick, and Gabriel each consumed 100 MEAT and 100 CAN. Staples of the CK diet. In addition, we also drank W1600M, W1603A, W1609, LAG, and ate some VEG. A couple of us consumed a few CIGs. We all dropped the health challenge down to none with ample amounts of these items, and we all have room left to spare.

Buy CAN!

 Grin

I drank V.S. Cognac, Louis XII Old Cognac, French Wine -1600 and 1604, Beer and Mead
Ate mostly VEG and about 50 MEAT, and consumed 200 CAN

Now:

HEALTH
You may still eat 0 units, drink 0 units and use 0 units of wisdom this year. Your remaining health challenge is Severe. Your overall health is Weak

Hey Ho.
