61  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Leave btc in Change address? Or move it to regular address? on: March 20, 2015, 12:49:45 PM
There is no need to move the funds from a change address. If you want to send 2 BTC it will pull it from all available addresses.

Perfect. That makes it pretty easy. Thanks for helping a newbie.  Smiley
62  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Display summary data from different crypto currency wallets on a Win7 pc. on: March 20, 2015, 12:46:42 PM
You can simply use MultiBit.
"MultiBit is a secure, lightweight, international Bitcoin wallet for Windows, MacOS and Linux"
https://multibit.org
So you can 2, 3, 30 BTC addresses in one app, stored and ready to use.
But one app for many crypto currency in one, did not came out as far as I know.

OK, thanks. On my Win7 pc I have the Electrum wallets for my BTC and LTC, I have the Darkcoin wallet and the Doge wallet. I'd love for someone to create an app that allows me to see the summary balances from each of these wallets and the current USD value for each of the coins. That would save me some time when I do my quarterly financial summary.

Is that impossible to do? Or pretty easy? I'm not a coder so I can't even guess how hard it would be.

Thanks, -Advait
63  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Newbie here: Bitalo reputable? Or risky? on: March 20, 2015, 12:37:54 PM
m3110w: did you ever find out if Bitalo is trustworthy?

Thanks for your reply. I'm using Coinbase and Cryptsy and so far they're meeting my needs very well. So I kind of forgot about Bitalo. If anyone thinks Bitalo is really great (or if they're just a scam), let me know. Otherwise Coinbase and Cryptsy are working for me.

I never hold any coins in Coinbase or Cryptsy. I do my acquisitions and trades and then immediately move the coins to my wallets. And I have multiple backups of all my wallets and seeds.

Thanks for helping a newbie. -Advait

PS: Is there some way to mark a thread as solved?
64  Economy / Speculation / Re: Purchase and hold some alt coins with play money on: March 20, 2015, 12:29:38 PM
i think it's better to just focus on bitcoin instead of altcoins.
there are so many altcoins that have lost 99% of their value.
if you still decide to invest in altcoins make sure you avoid the bad coins.
I think it is not possible to avoid 'bad coins', as you called them. The only thing you can do, once you decide the altcoin arena, is to diversify your investment so that you don't have all your eggs in one basket.

Yes, that is what I'm doing. Just getting small amounts of a small number of altcoins that have high market cap. Once again, I'm only using play money. And it will be a "invest and forget" investment.

I think we all agree that its *very* early in the evolution of crypto currencies and I guarantee we'll see some Black Swans that will totally surprise everyone.

Perhaps the next Chaiman of the Fed Reserve will be a big fan of Shiba Inus and dogecoin will shoot to the stars!  Grin   I'll be ready...

Thanks to everyone who has replied. Its very helpful for a newbie like me! I'm slowly getting the lay of the land.
65  Bitcoin / Electrum / Electrum wallet updating best practices? on: March 20, 2015, 12:00:58 PM
Hi All,

Newbie here. I've got the Electrum ver 1.9.8 btc wallet installed on my Win7 laptop. What is the best practice for keeping it updated? Do I just check for and download and install the latest version every month or so? Is there some way I can get automatically notified when a new version of the Electrum Win wallet is ready for download?

Should I uninstall the old wallet before installing a new version?

(I will do multiple local and remote backups of my wallet before doing any installs or upgrades.)

Thanks for helping a newbie,

Advait
66  Bitcoin / Electrum / Leave btc in Change address? Or move it to regular address? on: March 20, 2015, 11:53:23 AM
Hi All,

I'm a bitcoin newbie. I've got the Electrum btc wallet ver 1.9.8 installed on my Win7 laptop. One of the "Change" addresses has about 0.5btc. And one of the "Receiving" addresses has about 1.5btc.

Should I move the Change btc to another address?

Is there some way to combine all my Electrum btc into one address? Should I try to do this? Or doesn't matter?

If I try to send someone my total account value (2btc) will the send be successful? Or will it fail because my btc is spread between different addresses?

Thanks for helping a newbie,

Advait
67  Other / Beginners & Help / Display summary data from different crypto currency wallets on a Win7 pc. on: March 20, 2015, 01:43:11 AM
Hi All,

I'm starting to play around with crypto currencies just to see how they work. On my Win7 pc I've got wallets for BTC, LTC, Darkcoin and Doge. Each of these wallets has a small amount of each coin. Is there an app that can give me a one page summary of what's in my various wallets? I would also like the app to display the current USD value of each of the various coins. That way I can get a quick summary of my crypto currency position when I do my quarterly financial summary.

Anyone know of any apps like this? I did some googling and didn't find anything. Thanks,

Advait
68  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Altcoin presales on: March 19, 2015, 12:04:55 PM
presales work like this:
1st) hype it up
2nd) premine 100% at the press of a button
3rd) sell it to the fools and newbs
4th) buy into your own presale so you can have the largest marketshare and as many free coins as you like as you will also get the BTC from your own presale back
5th) hype it even more to get best price to sell before abandoning it. In case you missed out on step 4 just go ahead and abandon the project right after launch
that's how presales work - good luck with making money on that, haha
I translate for you: presale means you hand over your money for tokens which have been effortlessly (and centrally) produced (and distributed) on the press of a button and your decision to throw your hard earned money at that happens based solely on promises. Also you trust the dev(team) to not buy his own presale.  You're clearly in for a rude awakening.

Hello waaat?, Thanks for the reply. For a n00b like me its actually good to be reminded to be careful. From what little I know there are different kind of presales: Those that are scams and those (much fewer) that are legitimate. For example, from what little I know, it seems that presales like the ones from Ethereum and Gems were legitimate with some chance of a reasonable return. It seems that Koinify is listing legitimate presale events.

So would you say the Ethereum and Gems presales were scams? Or legitimate? Is Koinify a scam? I'm new to the whole world of crypto currency so your thoughts on this will be helpful for me.

If anyone else would like to weigh in on this that would be appreciated. I want to learn from more experienced people.

In general, I'm only using "play money" to acquire various crypto currencies. Play money means only a small amount that I don't care if I lose it all. And I'm happy to take that small risk for a small chance of a big payoff. No payoff without risk.

Thanks, Kind Regards,

Advait

Looks like Koinify in a good place for looking at pre-sales also.

Announcements (Altcoins)

Hi All, Is there a way I can get an email notification when a new thread is started on a particular forum? For example, I would like to get an email notification every time a new thread is started on the Announcements (Altcoins) forum.

I don't want to get notified of any replies, I only want to get notified when a new thread is started.

Is that possible? If yes, how?

Is there a way to sort the forum thread display by Start Date so the newest threads are at the top?

Thanks,

Advait

(please move this question if needed)

Hi All,

I'm new to the altcoin world and I've been able to acquire some of the various popular altcoins. I'm a little bit up the learning curve. I've recently become aware that Ethereum had a presale and also Gems had a presale. Is there a place that lists all the upcoming presales involving bitcoin and altcoints and related? Thanks,

Advait
74  Economy / Speculation / Purchase and hold some alt coins with play money on: March 07, 2015, 09:26:42 AM
Hi All,

I'm new to the crypto currency (cc) world. I have a little bit of play money to buy and hold some various cc's. ("Play money" means a small amount relative to my total assets so I don't care if I lose all the play money.)

I've been listening to some cc podcasts and reading some cc articles. My simple minded plan is to buy and hold some bitcoin, darkcoin and litecoin. I have some bitcoin and I'm in the process of getting some darkcoin.

What other cc's would you suggest I purchase? Litecoin? Others? Any suggestions would be appreciated. If you can offer a sentence or two to support your suggestion, that would be great. That way I'll learn what to look for re cc investing.

What are the best sites to learn about cc investing? The cc podcasts I'm listening to are giving me a general idea of the cc universe.

I do not plan to do any day trading or anything like that. I just want to buy and hold long term and see what happens. If any holdings go 10x I may sell.

Thanks for helping a cc newbie, Cheers,

Advait
75  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Cryptsy reputable? I'm considering getting Verified on cryptsy. on: March 03, 2015, 12:11:16 PM
Since you are just looking to trade for low amounts, you should be fine on other exchanges like Bittrex as well. They usually have more trading for someone who would like to day trade.

Thanks. I went ahead and registered with Bittrex and will check them out with some small quick trades. I don't plan on doing any day trading (there are much more fun ways to throw my money away). I'm a newbie so I'm just walking up the crypto currency learning curve and absorbing the basics. In the future I may do some research and figure out which currencies to hold for long term investment using my play money.

Cheers,

Advait

Hello xstr8guy and finnile,

Excellent, thanks for the info. I'll get Verified on Cryptsy and do some quick in and out trades. I did some research and it looks like Cryptsy had some problems in their beginning but now it seems they're OK.

It says that Cryptsy is incorporated in Belize and I'm sure the Belize crypto-currency laws are fully state-of-the-art.  Cheesy   Wink

Also says its managed in USA.

In any case I plan to do only quick trades and never keep any significant assets there.

Thanks!

77  Economy / Service Discussion / Cryptsy reputable? I'm considering getting Verified on cryptsy. on: March 02, 2015, 10:48:28 AM
Hi All,

I have a basic account with Cryptsy. I'm considering submitting my ID documents to get Verified on Cryptsy for low amount, occasional transactions in various altcoins and USD. I do not plan on keeping any significant amount in Cryptsy. I just plan to deposit, then do my trades, then quickly withdraw most or all of my currency.

Does Cryptsy have a good reputation? Anyone one get burned by Cryptsy? Any relevant links?

Thanks for helping a newbie,

Advait

78  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Newbie question re transfering bitcoins on: March 01, 2015, 10:22:20 AM
@m3110w was your old bitcoin wallet running automatically at start up all these years? I mean was it running in the background day in day out since 2011? It's difficult to believe how it could be up to date with the blockchain otherwise.

No, I carefully restrict what runs at start up and bitcoin was not allowed. I went to the bitcoin directory and the blkindex.dat file was 212mb and the blk001.dat file was 500mb. So it appears the original blockchain files were never updated. (however, both files are dated Feb 25, 2015) And I only briefly opened the wallet about 5 times since 2011.

The wallet version was circa 2011 and was never updated.

So you're saying its strange that I was able to successfully send my btc out of my old wallet? Maybe the Electrum system had something to do with the success?

Thanks,
79  Economy / Service Discussion / Newbie here: Bitalo reputable? Or risky? on: February 26, 2015, 11:05:48 AM

I read the thread about bitalo connected to the bitmarket.eu scammers. Should I avoid bitalo?

80  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Newbie question re transfering bitcoins on: February 25, 2015, 04:06:54 PM
The old wallet had 0.01 as the minimum possible fee. And $2.40 is no problem. I'm happy to support those hard working miners. :-)

The transaction now has 11 confirms. OK, now I'm a bitcoin pro! I'm now listening to some bitcoin/blockchain podcasts so I'm learning a lot.

Thanks everyone for your kind help,

That fee was too high. Should have been .0001.

IDK but that old client might have had that as the default minimum fee - in 2011, bitcoin was worth much less.
Anyway, 0.01 is just $2.40, so although that was unnecessary, it's not a big financial loss, and some mining pool out there will be grateful for this generous fee Smiley
