Total streams for the month of July: 13963

The number is based on the trend reports we receive (trend reports are unofficial sales data). It will be interesting to see how this develops going forward as more people receive FANTOKEN.

In the grand scheme of things 13963 is a low count, but it's way more than what we've previously received. Maybe there is a little bit more understanding around what the project is all about. Looking at the statistics, out of all our listeners it seems like we have one fan streaming 24/7.

I've updated OP. It's easier to receive tokens now:

All you need to do is follow Block Label on Spotify then post your Spotify username and bitcoin address:

Head over here to do so.

This is a cool project.  I do not want any free tokens or anything like that (Rather give those out to people more keen on them... [fans and listeners] )

I would dig to throw one of my tracks into the mix. Cheesy  Sorry maybe I didn't read the thread correctly but how do I submit my music?

Here is one of my more recent compositions.  I often release under different names and my music has never been more than a hobby. But perhaps you like it and wish to sign me up : https://soundcloud.com/blockchain-project/this-is-gentlemen

That would be great! I'd like to hear more of your stuff. You can fill out your info here: https://blocklabel.com/invite/

This is kind of a shameless plug. The music project I run has an artist with a bitcoin related song.

This is a great track!
Which instruments did you use to do it? It definitely deserves more views...

I'm not entirely sure what instruments were used. I asked Jack on twitter: https://twitter.com/blocklabel/status/891972632303861761

Got an answer: https://twitter.com/schmellypanties/status/891988015110922240

It's apparently Andreas' voice!

I'm posting this under Off-topic as I feel it's most appropriate. I hope the moderators keep the thread here since I purposely don't want it as an [ANN], [ICO] or some other [next big thing] post. If you're here looking to get rich, move along, nothing to see here.

Just to be clear:

No ICO, there won't be a sale of any sort

No radical technological innovation under development

No team with years of corporate business experience. No PhDs, MBAs...

Okay, great we got that out of the way. Now to the three of you that kept reading, here's the deal:

I run a project, it's a music project called Block Label. Conceptually it's very simple and I think it's pretty cool. The project releases music for artists on services like Spotify and Apple Music. In return the artists receive some tokens. These tokens receive most of the profit the project generates. That's it, pretty simple.

The artists can send these tokens to anyone they want, meaning they can share their profits. I've sent the same tokens to people answering trivia and also sent some to charities. Here's where it gets interesting. Everyone with the token that listens to a Block Label release on Spotify and Apple Music are essentially generating a small portion of their own return since listeners are the ones that create the streams, which in turn generates the income the project gets. Profits are sent to the tokens, which are held by a listener, who then listens to a Block Label release...you get the picture, full fucking circle! I'll leave a link at the bottom of this post with some info about the neat thing about sending these tokens to charities and The Pirate Bay.

While all that may sound nice, we aren't reaching the numbers needed. Which isn't surprising regardless of the quality of music being released. There isn't any traditional marketing being done. Instead of paying Google and Facebook for ads I'd rather see it go to those that create the revenue, hence the tokens. A bunch have already been sent out, yet we aren't seeing any change in the amount of listeners. So, I want to try something. I'll send tokens to anybody that wants to become a fan and listener. You'll have to prove you're actually a listener first though.

  • All you have to do is follow Block Label on Spotify then post your Spotify username and bitcoin address.
  • Head over here to do so.

Any bitcoin address can receive these tokens, it's only when you plan on sending them you'll have to use a Counterparty compatible wallet.

I'll send tokens to no more than 10 new fans/listeners every month. If a lot of people happen to participate they'll go on a waiting list for next month and so on. We can slowly start to measure if people are actually listening and also see if people are being honest, that they aren't creating multiple accounts to get more tokens. Regarding the issue, if everybody created two accounts, that would lead to only half the amount of new fans/listeners per month. If you receive double the amount of tokens, but the total number of streams (profit) is half of what it could have been, it becomes a zero sum game.

It's great seeing submissions to become a fan and join the street team coming in!

Some seem to have either entered their Spotify username incorrectly or forgot to follow Block Label's profile properly. A list of bitcoin addresses that have had issues will be posted. If you see the address you entered below, resubmit the form with your correct username and double check if you are following Block Label on Spotify.

The correct username to use is the one that's displayed on Spotify, check your profile in Spotify to confirm what it is.

Below is the list of entered bitcoin addresses that have had issues:

- 1Aar3kCDwcF8ERBrXEGEA4dMJvcwf45AJY
- 1EAECn7nzqMbk7FD3qa1dvbYkWj58iSV69

!!! If you've submitted the form correctly, but haven't received anything yet !!!
We're using minimal fees, it may take some time before you see your tokens in your wallet. Don't worry, profits won't be distributed to the tokens any time soon. The following addresses have pending FANTOKEN transactions:

No pending transactions

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good to know:

* This project has actually been running for two years. I've been a little reluctant posting about it on this forum, I was concerned that people would treat it kind of like mining. That token holders start streaming as much as possible on all their devices. Which isn't such a problem now that our catalogue of music is longer. Even if one were to stream our playlist all day long, each song would only be played ~6 times. I've heard songs played on the radio more often than that!

* The total number of tokens isn't the important part here. The amount circulating outside the originating address is.

* If there's a profit, Block Label receives payment around 4 times a year. It's important to be aware that distributions will only happen a few times a year.

Each stream doesn't pay much, this article gives a good breakdown of it.

How many more are actually listening then? Again that would be an estimate I guess.

75  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is BTC for you? on: July 16, 2017, 10:50:38 AM
My last reply seems to have been deleted, probably because I didn't elaborate on it. I wrote: It's the door that opens up to a better world.

What I meant by that was that bitcoin brings us new ideas and possibilities. Not just surrounding wealth and new business models, but how we treat each other on the basis of how we can transfer/give/share value with one another.
76  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How many people were into bitcoin in 2009? on: July 16, 2017, 10:23:34 AM
How would more people with a 20,000 usd node help with decentralization?

Nodes don't need to be a small server farm to run.. More cheap nodes would be better for decentralization than a few high end ones.

It was probably around 3,000-4,000 and now it should be around millions at least all around the world. But this couldn't change that situation. We wanna get involved with the bitcoin and we don't have money. What should we do? Nothing? Or pay $20,000 ? Very stupid, unfortunately.

So what did he mean by helping the network, or is there really no substance to the claim?

It's just another question that can't be answered definitively.

In 2009 I'd think that you're talking about less than 100 people.  You can view the old mailing list.

In November 2009, satoshi started this forum.  Notice how many posts there were on the new forum thread that were actually from the time?  It's only two.

Even going into the 2010 threads which satoshi posted in, you're talking about less than 100 different users posting in them.  There were very few people until Bitcoin's first bit of mainstream publicity from Wikileaks and PC world.

Appreciate the reply with links and all! I have a follow-up question, made me think about the number of users versus number of nodes. Made a new post about it here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2024134.0

77  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Node per user ratio on: July 16, 2017, 10:11:17 AM
I'm aware we can't know for sure how many users bitcoin actually has. But it would be interesting to know how the number of nodes have grown in comparison with the number of users.

Looking at https://bitnodes.21.co it says at the moment there are 7856 nodes. So, for the sake of the example we say there are 1 million bitcoin users in 2017. That means only ~0.8% of users are running a node.

My question is what were these numbers throughout the years? I'm guessing in 2009 it was 100% of users running a node and has since declined. Anybody want to fill out the blanks and give their estimate?

2009: 100% (100 users, 100 nodes)
2010: ?
2011: ?
2012: ?
2013: ?
2014: ?
2015: ?
2016: ?
2017: ~0.8% (1 million users, 7856 nodes)

What are people listening to here?

There are so many sub-genres, can't list them all. If you're into polka infused jazzmetal, select "Other".

Would be interesting to see what you all are into. Post whatever you're currently listening to as well, it'll be fun. I'll start:

Garrett Dale - Two Ts EP https://play.spotify.com/album/2fO7WpOEIYz3F0PeI2rygb?play=true&utm_source=open.spotify.com&utm_medium=open

Metal always... The Faceless- Black Star

It's been a while since I've gotten into a metal album. The last one was probably something by DragonForce.

If you like punk, The Lillingtons latest release is pretty awesome!
80  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is it too late to buy bitcoin? on: July 12, 2017, 01:24:41 PM
My guess is that anybody getting into bitcoin now and the next 5-10 years will be considered early adopters in the future.
