Hi everyone. I am totally devastated today. I just woke up to see a very large chunk of my bitcoin balance gone to the following address:

1KPTdMb6p7H3YCwsyFqrEmKGmsHqe1Q3jg

Transaction date: 6/13/2011 12:52 (EST)

The theft occurred right after someone broke into my slush's pool account. In a moment of sheer stupidity I did not think that maybe my whole system was compromised. I merely thought that someone brute forced my slush's pool password. I then proceeded to change the password on the pool from a secure computer.

The transaction sent belongs rightfully to this address: 1J18yk7D353z3gRVcdbS7PV5Q8h5w6oWWG

I decided to look up the theft on https://blockchain.info/address/1KPTdMb6p7H3YCwsyFqrEmKGmsHqe1Q3jg
and guess what I found?

Whoever stole the bitcoins is another bitcointalk member (aaronbarr)

This guy also seems to know some stuff about robbing bitcoin

AMC may issue up to 20,000,000 "Early-Adopters" shares which may be posted for no less than 0.0005 BTC
each and will also issue 20,000,000 growth and expansion fund shares to AMC.  The "Early-Adopter" shares
may be posted in batches with the first batch being 5,000,000 shares.  Only the first 40,000,000 issued
shares will receive 100% of the monthly profits after all expenses until the total dividends paid is
equal to .0005 BTC per share.  AMC will only issue 40,000,000 shares (20,000,00 "Early-Adopter and
20,000,000 AMC growth and expansion fund shares) until the total dividends paid is equal to 0.0005 BTC
per share and 12 months have elaped from the date of the initial offering.  Should it be determined that
it is not feasible to develop an ASIC chip, then the remaining funds in the research and development/purchase
fund will be added the growth and expansion fund.

Additional shares may be sold at no less than .001 BTC each.

Further more the first Batch was far less than 5,000,000 and you didn't publicly increase the IPO price, you removed the IPO offerings and have ever since then sold them whenever you feel like it.

I contacted BitFunder and they are now investigating this IPO.
Really?   But the assumptions of OP seem so reasonable.   He was only assuming taking (and maintaining) 25% of the entire network for the next 24 months by purchasing 8% of the available avalons (he sent Yifu an email you know) and then making his own chips....
Not sure if he assumed no one else would have any interest in competing with him.    He is only 8 months behind friedcat so why not?

Yes. While I love the concept of the security and the work they are doing, the way they don't offer their shares publicly at the announced IPO prices is very dubious. It seems like the Issuer (AMC) shows up to the market a couple times a day and does a massive sell, saturating all the BIDs over the IPO price of 0.0005.

This is far from my understanding of how IPOs are supposed to work.. but then again, maybe I'm wrong. That's why I've been asking AMC to explain what's going on, but didn't receive any response. Maybe they'll respond to BitFunder.

65  Economy / Securities / Re: [BitFunder] AMC-The Official Active Mining Cooperative Discussion on: May 24, 2013, 10:27:37 PM
AMC is a hybrid Bitcoin mining and development cooperative describing itself as "the next big mining cooperative" is releasing today an offering to early-adopters of Five million (5,000,000) BitFunder virtual shares and issuing another twenty million (20,000,000) BitFunder virtual shares which will be used for the growth and expansion fund, which will receive a total of 100% of the company's virtual-currency profits after all expenses until the total dividends paid is equal to the offering price of .0005 BTC per share and 12 months have elapsed since the initial offering. The Cooperative is hoping to raise up to 2,500 Bitcoins. The offering price will be 0.0005 Bitcoins for the first 20,000,000 early-adopter shares thereafter the price will be .001 BTC per share. If demand is strong enough then share prices may increase throughout the IPO.

If the IPO of the first 20 000 000 shares is stlll ongoing, why aren't they priced at 0.0005 as per the initial offering?

The IPO is still going on.

See: https://bitfunder.com/assetlist

The two largest holders used to add up to almost 40 million shares. Some of those shares were put up in a single ask at around 4.5 million or so. During that time maybe about 300k were sold. Then the ask was pulled, and the price rose. Large volume buying ensued, so that right now they have sold over 1 million shares. Much of that has sold at well above 0.0005. You can find out whether one of those larger accounts is selling at 0.0005 by taking a snapshot of the assets list, buying one share, and then taking another snapshot to compare. How long that strategy remains useful is hard to know because we may have some sales happening between two people who own the same account -- a possibility that is very real given the circumstances.

For the record, I'm one of the top ten shareholders, and this activity does not serve my interests.

Thanks for taking the time to explain this.

AMC: I've been following this stock closely and own a relatively nice chunk of them, however I will stop buying more unless I see them at the IPO price. Heck, might stop for good: I feel very stupid now because I paid upto 0.0008 for some of my shares. I thought the IPO was over because there were no asks at IPO price.

AMC: is it you who keeps on selling massive amounts of shares to push the price down to 0.0005? I can't see how it would be anyone else and I think this is very misleading, since people have put up offers 50% over the IPO price in good faith. Please elaborate.

I love the mining concept, but something isn't right here or at least needs more transparency.

Source ? Last time i checked China happily encouraged people to use Bitcoin on their national propagandist TV.

It seems that so far text messages with "bitcoin" in them have been requested to be blocked, but Bitcoin Internet traffic is still running fine.
72  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Project Meshnet: Hardware for cjdns to enable new, censorship free Internet on: May 24, 2013, 09:31:24 AM
Couple of slight problems.  For one, the earth is spherical in case you have not heard.  It also has a gaseous atmosphere...for now at least.

It actually is fairly do-able to have long distance radio links on pretty much a DIY basis, so there is probably no need for sharks and lasers and all that.  But as I say, your link is likely to be visited by a drown within a few minutes...and quite possibly vaporized not long after.

I highly doubt that you would get into trouble if you're using the standard WIFI channels for your mesh network. If you do, there are much bigger problems to worry about that Bitcoins / Internet.
73  Economy / Economics / Re: Japan. The Yen. The Hyperinflation. on: May 24, 2013, 05:18:56 AM
I've got a few related questions.

In general, isn't practically every country, hence the world, in a giant bond "bubble"?

All G7 countries, yes. (Well, other countries too.. But I think you get the point)

How is it that yields are so low when risk of default is at least perceived to be so high due to the sheer, hulking, clearly impossible amount of the debt itself?

The yields are artificially low. In US and Japan, the central banks are buying ~70% of all newly issued bonds

Doesn't the fact that everybody can plainly see the debt growing hyperbolically contribute to the bubble popping risk of the bond market where yields skyrocket one day?

Yes, but as long as the music doesn't stop you can make big bucks by taking near zero interest loans and invest them in high-yield bonds like Italy/France. Also, if yields start going higher, inflation will increase too. So if you can lock-in with these low rates, you can pay the debt back with cheaper currency.

What happens when it pops, like all bubbles do?

I think that people will stop trusting the Fiat currencies, which are (backed by) debt.

What else can happen besides instant default and collapse?

The debt slavery and austerity will continue and worsen, before people stand up and demand the banks to take responsibility and more equal incomes overall.

Is all this money printing supposed to keep this bubble from popping in the first place or is it intended to somehow make it magically not catastrophic when it does pop?

Yes, QEs are keeping the markets alive but what if FED/BOJ can never pull out?

If it somehow never pops and the money printing is done and it "worked", is not everybody's taxes going to be like 20 times their income in order to just service the resulting amount of debt?

Well it depends.. EU is vowing to end tax evasion, US seems to be heading the same way (Apple). Recently 200GB of tax haven data was leaked, still waiting for action based on the evidence. In a very unlikely scenario, the tax evasion might be stopped and that could cover a massive portion of the deficits.. but I think that it will more likely trigger hyper-inflation (so far we haven't experienced inflation, because while money supply has increased, money velocity has taken a nose dive. If the big money starts to flee from tax havens -> increased velocity -> inflation hits main street).
74  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Project Meshnet: Hardware for cjdns to enable new, censorship free Internet on: May 24, 2013, 03:35:27 AM
AFAIK cjdns doesn't compromise speed for "extra anonymity" ie. it uses the shortest/fastest path for the traffic.

There are even more hardcore projects like Fennec, although it's just a whacky idea inside some guys head for now: https://github.com/coyotama/fennec/blob/master/README.md

I will try to persuade a Project Meshnet contributor to join the forum to answer questions.. meanwhile, you can ask them in the reddit post linked above.
75  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Project Meshnet: Hardware for cjdns to enable new, censorship free Internet on: May 23, 2013, 10:57:58 PM
With the newsrumors of China starting to censor Bitcoin traffic, I find this very important. And they accept Bitcoins for donations (I just donated 1.79 BTC).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Project Meshnet, cjdns, Hyperboria and the Seattle Meshnet Project?
Project Meshnet is a colation of meshnet groups that works to promote the development of local meshnets. Cjdns is a networking suite that is commonly used to set up local meshnets, and Hyperboria is what we call the networkof cjdns nodes that weave in and out of both local meshnets and the internet. And on a closing note, the Seattle Meshnet Project is a local meshnet group based out of Seattle that has organized this crowdfunding project.

Why is wireless router support so important, and what does it mean for meshnets?
Once cjdns runs on routers (which means it will run atop the OpenWRT platform), it will be possible to easily and affordably bring Hyperboria in to the average home. Right now it requires somewhat advanced computer knowledge in order to join the meshnet and connect to Hyperboria, but once OpenWRT integration is complete, it will be as simple as plugging in your new router. Our network has grown quickly as it is, but to really bring the mesh to most homes setup needs to be simpler.

How do I know this will even work?
The Seattle Meshnet Project has ran previous group buys and sucessfully paid our current cjdns developer to fix bugs in cjdns. We intend to parlay this experience with paid bugfixing and group buys of hardware into this crowdfunded bugfix, and as with our previous group buy, we'll be distributing hardware and signed posters too.

Mods: feel free to move the thread to a better sub-forum. I think this is related to Bitcoin due to the China censorship rumors.

79  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC buying power of Gold!?!? on: May 23, 2013, 08:12:31 AM
Here's what I would do:

Short term (0-1 year): hold and wait. TPTB will continue to raid gold as long as they can to hide inflation and persuade people into stocks/bonds.
Medium term (0-10 years): hold and buy. Buy especially if similar huge drops occur or inflation starts to kick in.
Long term (10+ years): hold and sell. Be on the lookout for cheaper energy prices or high gold prices to justify for asteroid mining.

Then again I personally invest more in silver. GSR (gold-silver-ratio) for prices is ~60:1 where as GSR for production is ~10:1. Silver is mostly a mining by-product, so it's more difficult to ramp up production if demand surges. And historical GSR price ratio is ~16:1.

EDIT:

In regard to BTC/Gold.. Short term: Buy Gold, it's much more widely accepted as a safe haven. Long term: Buy BTC, it has limited supply and can't be confiscated.
80  Economy / Economics / Re: Japan. The Yen. The Hyperinflation. on: May 23, 2013, 02:33:22 AM
All the major currencies are sinking together, the effect of a dramatic drop in one is similar to poking your finger at an inflated balloon.  The effects are seen in the overall dimensional space, which is not linear a-->b event space.

Feel free to make your own predictions. Just saying E=mc2 or talking about "overall dimensional spaces" doesn't add any value to the discussion.
