61  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner on: May 31, 2016, 10:03:15 PM
How is the cost of the miner determined?
62  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How/where can I get hold of old, used miners? on: May 30, 2016, 08:44:10 AM
Sense it is to promote and tech with, i do  have one Alchemist script miner board i will give you you pay shipping it does work on a rasp berry PI i will even throw in a PI with cables with 2 fans to cool it  free no PSU ,you pay shipping as long as  it's what you say its for which i will have to trust you on, that boards going price if it works is worth 200 or more im willing to give to you for teachings purposes pay shipping it's yours.   to any one else don't ask I'll sell it .

il even give what support i can to get it running they do run off of a pi now, i do it with five boards .
i have eight boards or the full miner all eight work was thinking of selling one or two boards or try to make or find a case it fits and sell it as a 28 mh miner they go for on eBay for 400 easy but if it goes to a good cause why not give one a way free .
but it's for teachings only i trust you will use it for that ?.

I want nothing in return, so don't offer, if you do i will then, so don't offer.,

Shipping to New Zealand might be a pain but i'm willing it's the customs part that gonna be the pain but the offer stands .I'll be totally honest i have never shipped one thing out of the US only bought it out of the US then had it shipped to me but im willing if you want it , let me know .

Thanks a lot toptek. This is 100% for going into high schools and for learning. I've just started this project so I'm still figuring out a website and sorting out the details but I've got the general idea.

I've benefited a lot from the open source community so for me, it's all about sharing what I know to everyone else. You won't be disappointed. Just give me some time. I'll PM you if that is ok.

Thanks a lot.

Are stickminers an option, or are you only looking at standalone units?

That is another good point. As I am starting up, I would take anything actually. Those USB stick miners would be neat too.
64  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How/where can I get hold of old, used miners? on: May 28, 2016, 04:37:47 AM
I have a 8 AntMiner S1s that are underclocked/volted to 140Gh 180W draw with the pencil mod.  Makes them nice and quiet also.  And they still make $0.17/day each!  (LOL)

Don't have PSUs for them, but the S1s were built like tanks and very fun/easy to work with.  I would part with them for just the cost of shipping if I knew they were going to a good cause!

That is awesome. Are you sure? coz they are still making money (17c lol) for you! I'm from New Zealand so do you know what shipping would be? Maybe PM me and if it's not too dear that would be really appreciated.

Feels like this is a game for the big boys. Something you guys probably knew a long time ago! SFARD's initial philosophy was promising (open source and community driven/support) but I guess they also succumbed to reality/economics.

Well, like they say, if it was easy, everyone would do it.
66  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Who Are The Manufactures Currently Selling Chips ? on: May 25, 2016, 09:13:26 PM
All I got was the publicly-available datasheet.

Ah, so you had to MacGyver the rest. That's impressive.
67  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Who Are The Manufactures Currently Selling Chips ? on: May 25, 2016, 08:28:30 PM
I've been self-employed for 4 years, somehow scraping by the whole time. Been making a living from serving the bitcoin economy for about two and a half years.

Yep, sourcing chips is a nightmare. I guess I got lucky that Bitmain was even willing to talk to me last spring, and even luckier that they sold me some chips.

That is awesome. Yeah, I guess we all manage to scrape by when we need to.

Can I ask re: design of a board, when you managed to get some chips, how much support did you get from the manufacturers? ie datasheets, dev boards, sample pcb layouts or did you basically just get the chips and had to figure out the rest?

The reason I got excited about SFARD is because they had a lot of this material available as open source.
68  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Who Are The Manufactures Currently Selling Chips ? on: May 25, 2016, 02:10:32 PM
No shame at all. You're doing much better than me. I quit my job 5 months ago to get back to my hardware/software engineering root. Got sick of having meetings about meetings in the corporate world.

Seen some of the hardware stuff you've created (and others in this community) and it is awesome. My dream would be to create small miners like how you and the likes of jstefanop do and help the community, open source it but most of all, walk into high schools and universities down under here (NZ/AUS) and share the knowledge and increase awareness.

Sourcing chips seems to be a nightmare though. Sad
69  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Who Are The Manufactures Currently Selling Chips ? on: May 25, 2016, 01:16:05 PM
If you mean a small scrypt miner, no I won't. If you mean a small BTC miner, I've got a few designs already in progress.

Can I ask where you source your chips from? Or is that like asking how much someone earns? (If so apologies in advanced) Smiley

Whats wrong with vid card mining rigs Huh Lots of coins to mine & make pennies a day  Cool

Cheap & anyone can get them & mine with them. Most everyone has an decent PC in the house.

Good point. Hadn't considered of that. I might go down that route as well. Reason is that part of the theory I want to demonstrate the evolution of CPU, GPU, FPGA and then the ASICs. And it seems ASICs are so common these days that it's grabbed more attention.

Cheers.

Thanks. Appreciate it.

An updated news release on the progress of the A4 chip. They are taking preorders for shipment in 2 months time.

"The A4 Dominator ASIC, priced at discounted $12 per chip for early birds, will continue the fantastic A2 Terminator legacy in serving our mining community. With the unbeatable price and performance, A4 Dominator ASIC/Miner will revolutionize how we mine coins for the years to come."

Ref: http://www.innosilicon.com/html/news/14.html

After reading the SFARD saga I'm not sure what to think now.
73  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / How/where can I get hold of old, used miners? on: May 25, 2016, 06:01:47 AM
I'm looking to start a project where I want to go to local high schools and spread the knowledge on cryptocurrencies. More specifically I want to show them practically how mining works as a starting point. I think it is more beneficial to "do" in conjunction with listening to a whole bunch of theory.

I want to source old and hopefully inexpensive scrypt miners and supply them to schools (either free or very cheaply) so that each student can have their own little miner and learn about bitcoins/litecoins, software and hardware. My son was part of the hour of code and this is where I got the idea from.

The reason for scrypt/litecoin is that I think it will be more interesting for kids because the bitcoin hashrate is insane. At least with litecoins, they could maybe earn a few cents a day to keep their interest. (Although old btc miners would be fine as well).

Does anyone have (or know of anyone that has) old scrypt miners lying around that need a new home? Or are there websites that offer cheap old (1st gen?) miners?

Or is it the case that anyone with a miner, no matter how new or old, would have it running 24x7 themselves?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I saw this from Innosilicon re A4: http://www.innosilicon.com/html/news/13.html dated Mar 30 16 so relatively recent. I'll say hello to them and see what they say.

I've seen the MoonLander from jstefanop which looks awesome and the last he wrote was that he is looking into the A4 so I assume it's not impossible. Maybe the ordering quantity needs to be huge to get in the door?

edit: Bicknellski may have gotten banned from this forum - try reaching him through social media.

Is it still possible to source chips nowadays? Updates from Googling:
Avalon: https://ehash.com/product/a3222-20pcs/ doesn't work. Seems like they only sell actual miners.
Bitmain Tech: Seems like they only sell actual miners.
InnoSilicon: Looks like they might. Has anyone obtained new or old gen chips from them?
SFARD: Read the entire 82 pg drama filled thread. Seemed promising but a dead end?
Spondoolies: These guys have shut up shop. http://www.spondoolies-tech.com/blogs/news

I'm a hardware/software enthusiast but it seems like a mission and a half to trudge down this path.

I'll eat my hat if anyone can show me the maths that makes cloud mining profitable/worthwhile. When I did the maths, it just never worked out.
