I'm trying to get bitcoinjs-server working under Windows 7. Where is bin/bitcoinjs supposed to find module "step"?
63  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [PATH] On How to create an decentralized exchange on: April 13, 2013, 12:13:25 PM
Could you eloborate and give examples? I'm working in a p2p exchange project but I have no clue what you're talking about. From what I read I would say that people would voluntarily report their purchases into the app, so other people can know the price (and that's it).

Hi Dansmith,

Some brainstorming here:

Thanks for taking up my "hijacking-attempt" positively. Sorry for not reading your project details better before.

Is your project related to bitcoins? I can imagine it is if it is used to buy bitcoins. That could indeed also be exchange-related.

So what I'm now trying to figure out is if your project would be suitable as a plugin for bitcoinx. The issue with p2p exchanges is that you CAN safely exchange bitcoins, but not other entities such as dollars (as you need a third party: a bank, or be georgraphically close to the counterparty). a bank is ok but it is open to fraud, as the bank is not part of your protocol.

- You provide a solution to this by having an escrow.
- The way bitcoinx works is that it uses "colored" satoshi as a proxy for dollars.

Both solutions have an advantage and a disadvantage.

Your solution:
adv: You get the real dollars on your bank account and are not dependant on some entity that will in the end provide dollars for your colored satoshi.
disadv: It's not entirely decentralized. If all banks collapse, p2p bitcoin exchange would not work anymore.

Bitcoinx:
adv: it's more p2p.
disadv: In the end it comes down to that you need trust that you can change your colored satoshi for dollars.(or other fiat)

... and the synthesis is ........:
Bitcoinx should use your service. In case someone wants to sell his bitcoins for dollars, but does not have a bank account, your escrow service would buy colored satoshi at an issuer that at least the receiving party trusts and send them to the receiver. as far as I know the colored satoshi vs. dollar rate of a single service should be constant (the negation of which also might be possible but gives me headaches when I'm trying to think about it. defaults etc. let's not think about this right now.)

It might be possible to couple (as in un-decouple) your escrow service and the colored satoshi issuer.

Maybe I'm running to fast, but I do see the value of your project as a potential addon for bitcoinx.

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies and pm's. I decided to join the bitcoinx project. It would btw solve the ddos issues koin is talking about.

Cheers,
Albert

I'm glad that you found out the issue with fiat currency. I'm sorry for spamming the forum, but I hate to have 10 different startups with the same goal. So I'm saying again what I'm saying everywhere, I think it would be good if we all joined the same p2p exchange project; and for me personally I think bitcoinx has the best chances. I'm joining them!

Many p2p exchange ideas are popping up on this forum. I did research on them yesterday. You'll find my conclusion in most of those topics.
68  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: P2P Exchange for bitcoin on: April 11, 2013, 01:25:54 PM
Guys, the forum is overflowing with topics that initiate a p2p bitcoin exchange. I'm not kidding. Yesterday I investigated them all, and I chose help developing bitcoinx (2nd place was darkexchange, at a distance). You can do your research and you'd probably end up joining bitcoinx as well Smiley. See user killerstorm, project armoryx, project bitcoinx.

edit: I meant user "killerstorm" (on this forum).

Nice. I'm now starting to read the google mailing list and the docs.
70  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: ArmoryX (colored coins): issue and trade private currencies/stocks/bonds/etc on: April 10, 2013, 11:50:35 PM
Some things here. If it's really about transactions that don't make sense economically, they should adjust the patch. Colored satoshi ARE economically sensible. I didn't read that topic though. I've just read THIS topic.

Ok, so this is a brilliant topic, but let me first address some issues I see.

There are currently only 1100000000000000 satoshi available. That may sound like a lot, but it's really not (as SilverShire already pointed out). Every single share consumes a satoshi. I don't know how many shares there are worldwide, but I do know there are 1.1 bln MacDonalds shares. But stocks are still doable. How about $1 that says that Chelsea will beat Rubin Kazan tomorrow? There are about 30,000 of them. And believe me, that color is really cool to trade on an exchange. The ownership of the mox ruby magic the gathering card that once belonged to Bram Snepvangers? There goes another satoshi. You get the idea. There's too much to color. This thing will drown in its own success.
71  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Dark Exchange: a 100% decentralized p2p exchange on: April 10, 2013, 09:56:56 PM
Hi all,

Don't get too enthusiastic yet. I've done some research today on p2p exchanges. Indeed, the dark exchange is brilliant. I've read all pages today. They do run into some trouble though: how can you make sure the dollars for the btc are transfered. And how do you do that decentralized? My conclusion, which I'm discussing with user "ConceptPending", is that there are p2p bitcoin exchange projects that solve this. Yes, there are other projects that have the same goal as this topic. One of them is p2px. It doesn't have any code yet but the concept is right. The other one is bitcoinx. It has code, a website, and an hour ago I decided to join them (I'm going to spend 2 months of fulltime coding). So don't forget to explore your options before joining anything!
72  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: P2P Cryptocoin Exchange (P2PX) on: April 10, 2013, 09:47:43 PM
Hi all,

I have done some research on p2p bitcoin exchanges. As far as I understand, the project of this topic does not have any code yet. There's another p2p exchange project which does have code: DarkExchange (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=27055.140). However it's running into troubles and they haven't figured out yet that coloring is the solution. Actually the bitcoinx project did find that out, AND it has code AND it has a website. I've discussed matters with user "ConceptPending" and it looks like we're joining the bitcoinx project. I'm sorry if I'm stealing away people now, but at least you should be aware of similar projects.

Hey Fireball,

Do you need some help? I'm not sure if that question has been answered before in the previous 39 pages, I didn't read through them. Please check my request at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=172378.msg1793556

I can imagine you're already earning enough to not need to share anything, but I thought it's worth a shot anyway.

I'm intrigued by this idea.
78  Bitcoin / Project Development / Let me program for FREE on your #bitcoin related project (2g2bt?) on: April 10, 2013, 02:10:55 PM
Hi,

Recently I got fired by my boss. Not yet actually, because I'll get paid until the 30th of June but I'm not welcome anymore.

So I can do with my time whatever I want and I would like to spend it on bitcoins. I would like to hear about your projects. So will I work for free, really?

Well, I'd like a share of your future bitcoin returns. For the first couple of weeks I will work for free to prove myself, but then to continue I'd like a reward if it will all work out, in the form of a share in the project (/bitcoin returns). So basically I'm looking for a business partner in some bitcoin related project.

I'm open to anything, but I will be sceptic to any project as in "do I think it will succeed"?

What do I have to offer?

- expert in Java and PHP (7+ years experience in both).
- experience in a financial high frequency trading firm with currencies
- earns coins in daytrading
- mensa iq: 139
- Msc in computer science (Utrecht University, the Netherlands)

I'm looking for someone who preferrably already has a project running and is already earning some coins but not enough to pay for a(nother) programmer. Who will pull the project and will continue his project even if I fall away.
The project I'm looking for would be a bitcoin hedgefunds, a bitcoin exchange, maybe a bitcoin marketplace, or maybe something else.... with bitcoins.

The other day someone asked for help on bitcoinj on this forum. The point is that helping him would probably establish my name in the long term as a bitcoin core programmer; however I don't see how it's going to earn me coins directly.

Please ask for more info and/or tell about your project.
79  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Buying 5000 USD worth of btc in the next few days on: April 09, 2013, 01:49:02 AM
Note that Bitcoin markets are currently unlike regular markets. Prices are increasing more than exponentially. You could spend a day figuring out how to get a fair price while that fair price increases 50 percent. I bought my coins for myself and my father a week ago at bitonic.nl, who are now sold out all of the time. I would go for any coins you can grab at the mentioned exchanges, and seriously consider the offers done above.
80  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Building a rig, which of these cards are best? on: April 09, 2013, 01:37:45 AM
As far as I know you need to consider your GHz. First generation was graphics cards, then came FPGA's and now Asics will come. When you calculate your profits here:
http://www.bitcoinx.com/profit/
you will soon reconsider mining (at least that's what I did).
