@Yun9999 I was shocked it happened as well. I've trusted EVGA products for years, and knowing that the 1200W plat is literally the best possible, having it die on me on very first power on was pretty shocking. Could it be that I had it plugged into a surge protector with a monitor and box fan as well? I really don't think so since I did hear the pop in the PSU and the smell, plus the fan/monitor stayed on and constant, just trying to figure out how it would have passed EVGA's inspections on their devices and still pop instantly on me. And thanks for the heads up on the 1 fan variants, I'm running just an open air build on a homemade wooden setup, so I'm guessing it'll be fine. Ambient temps are always around 70, maybe 80 highest in the summer.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I just got in my order from Hawkfish today, and my TB250, so I was making my first real rig. Went to power it up for the first time, heard a pop, a burning smell. PSU was DoA, 1200W Platinum EVGA Sad

Now have to wait until Monday amazon says to get my replacement. Hope it didn't hurt any parts I had plugged into it...

Does anyone have an experience with 1 fan variants of cards for mining? (XFX, PowerColor). Do they run a lot hotter than others because of the 1 fan, or is it okay? Also the MSI Armor RX470's, how's their cooling? I've heard that they run hot because they only have 2 heat pipes, but I don't have one to confirm. I have an RX480 Armor with 3 heat pipes and it runs fine.

No Problems here with Powercolor 470 Red Dragon (single large fan) but of course undervolted so one card draws around 100W for ETH from outlet (ZEC mining needs 14% less). The open air rig has a quite large distance (ca. 2 inches) of cards - maybe this helps.

I have single fan XFX rx 470. No issues with it, very silent compared to reference cards. But I'm worried if the fan dies, the card will overheat. If one fan in a dual fan gpu die, it won't overheat as bad.

okay thanks guys, that's what I wanted to know, I have my cards undervolted as well, just never tried a 1 fan variant. Do you dual mine with the 1 fan variants?

470 Armor OC 4G have 2 heatpipes
480 Armor OC 4G have 3 heatpipes

that's what I thought/said, I was wondering if anyone knows how big of a difference on cooling it makes.

Just purchased my first riser pack from Hawkfish on Amazon, everything to make my rig should be here by midweek, I'll post pictures when I'm done. Thanks for this thread being so informative even to littler guys like me.

Glad I grabbed that TB250 when I did, Newegg is already out of stock of them already.

Does anyone have any information about this board? It looks like a brand new Biostar board for a 6 GPU rig.

I just purchased one for my first rig, so I guess I'll find out how it works.

Hey guys, after reading through the entire thread, and been monitoring it for a while, you've made me want to take the jump into a real first rig. I currently run a 3GPU rig in my main computer, just using a whole regular computer setup to power/run it, with an added box fan to cool since it's in a semi closed (1 side panel off) case. I want to make the jump into a full 6 GPU rig, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what to buy. I know GPU's well, so that's not an issue. I searched for all the boards that are in this initial post, and none of them are available for any decent prices anymore. So I'm stuck right at the gate with what motherboard to go with. It would be nice to get some information on a mobo and risers to use, plus a power supply. I see this talk about using a server supply and a pico, but honestly I'm lost with that. My thought would just be a 1200W EVGA platinum for PSU.

So I guess my question is, what mobo + risers do you suggest for a first full rig, and is a 1200W EVGA platinum a good PSU to go with it? I plan to use 6x RX470's for it, with undervolting. Currently I have 2 RX470's both running at about 110W each.

I would also like to build my own open air case for it, does anyone have any suggestions for designs or where to look to go find some?

I love the seeing everyone's builds, and hope I can get one to show off here as well. Thanks for any help guys.

Edit: This is my current board in my regular PC, from my understanding, this thing can run 5 cards with the expresses and risers?

So 480 4g vs 480 8g... Do they mine the extra 20% in worth?

From what I've read and seen other people say, a 4g can get about 28-30 Mh/s, I'm getting 28.5 on my MSI armor 4g. A 8g can get 30-32 Mh/s. I'm not that experience in it yet, but I have 2 8GB's on the way, so I can report back what I find then.
73  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Claymore's Dual Ethereum AMD+NVIDIA GPU Miner v8.1 (Windows/Linux) on: March 20, 2017, 01:48:50 AM
So what's better? 470, 480, or 480 8GB? I've been checking around and can't find a definitive answer on this one.

For the ETH, there is little difference between the 470 and 480. However, the RX 480 has faster memory.

Not what I heard when it comes to duel mining.

So what's better? 470, 480, or 480 8GB? I've been checking around and can't find a definitive answer on this one.
480 8GB for me.  Sold all 470. There is big difference. And AMD is stopping production of 4xx...

As far as AMD stopping production of the 4XX series, source for that? That seems highly unlikely considering they haven't introduced the high end model, which is Vega. They'll produce them the same way they produced the 3XX series and Fury. They use a word name for the high end parts and just normal numbers for the mid and lower end parts.

Anyone have any actual comparable numbers or something they can point me towards for benchmark numbers? CMB doesn't usually benchmark duel mining for some reason.
From what I understand AMD is doing a rebrand of the 4xx cards to be 5xx with negligible performance increases, similar to what they have done many times in the past.(280 to 380, 290 to 390 etc. ) The high end Vega 11 cards should be available in May, with the Vega 10 landing late this year.
From my experience with ASUS and GIGA 470's it is no brainer they are closing them down.
My info is not from internet.
No rebranding anymore. 2 new cards May. Will go out same way as ryzens. Or not, if they change their minds.

They are rebranding though, the 4xx series is getting rebranded to the 5xx, available in April.

Another update: Up to 28.5 Stable with Mem clock at 2000, pushing pretty much anything past that doesn't seem to work, but I am VERY happy with that speed. Thanks once again @fr4nkthetank.

I'm going to have to chip in here about the msi armor.  Its actually a great card for mining.  Now i'm talking about the 470 4g as I dont have any armor 480s, but still should be similar.

So you get anywhere between 27-28.5 mhs with your memory clock between 1925 and 2025.  Core clock is down to 1050 to 1125 depending on the card.  Voltage is way down, around 0.88v should be pretty stable (again, this depends on each individual card).

So DDU your rig. Install 16.11.x drivers as an example.  Then Polaris Bios Editor.  Open it, and change your memory straps from 1500mhz, or 1625mhz, all the way up to the max.  save the original (dont forget).  flash bios with atiwinflash.  Reboot.  Install msi afterburner, set core clocks and memory clock, voltage.  Reboot again (important).  Run claymore.  And you should get good results.  This applies to hynix and samsung, maybe elpida but i havent done elpida memory in a little while, so i dont know if you can change it with polaris bios editor.  Anyways its pretty straight forward, win10.  set virtual mem to over 20gigs.  dual mining pascal, set -16 or something like that.  have fun and im not responsible for your bricked cards, neither am I for spilled beer on rigs.

Quoting you again. I followed this exactly, and it worked. I'm up to 25+ already, and that's without any major tweaks, just upped mem clock to 1825. Thanks so much, I've been working on this for over a week. I think what happened last time was when I did the modded bios I didn't take the value the correct way. Also using DDU was probably helpful, I hadn't used it before just manually uninstalled it all. Thanks a bunch man.

When you say change the memory straps, do you mean copy the value from one of those points and put it on the memory ratings to keep the timing lower them while it's running at a faster mem speed?

Can someone help me figure out why I can't get anymore than 22 MH/s on my MSI RX 480 4g Armor? I keep seeing people say how they're getting 28-30 on a similar card, but I can't figure it out. I've tried a different Bios and Overclocking, but it really doesn't seem to do much. Is there a specific Bios for this card that I need to us? It has Hynix memory. It just feels really weak to what everyone else is getting.

Good luck getting much more than 24 Mhs on those cards.  I believe the ones that claim 28-30 are full of shit.  I accidentally bought a rig with a 6 Sapphire rx 480 4g set up early in my mining days when I didn't know what I was doing and it seemed real cheap and I have screwed around with them only to finally give up and I now just mine the hell out of DCR because they are good for that.  I run the cards with DCR at 90 and get 22-24 Mhs and accept what I get.  Anything I try with them to increase ETH prodcution causes the cards to drop out or get the OpenCL failure.  I can get the 8g versions to work just fine and mine at the levels you state, but the 4g cards just don't have enough ass to get it done.  If you do figure it out, please let me know the trick, and in the meantime, good luck.

That's what has me so confused, because I keep reading all over the place that people say they get it, but I can't figure out for the life of me how. On here and the Eth forums people say they can push their 4g's to 28 pretty easily, and I've used Wattman and modded Bios's and can't find a way to do it.

I'm having issues with an RX 480 mining. Firstly I'm only getting a max of 22H/s, which I know is low for it, and secondly I keep getting these spikes that go down to like 17H/s, and it stays there for a bit then goes back up. Currently I'm just running base with base bios, but I tried a different Bios, and overclocking with Wattman, and I couldn't get any more performance out of it or make it more stable, does anyone have any ideas? I tried only mining Eth and not using the Dual mode, but it didn't help at all.

It's an MSI RX 480 Armor 4g on GPU0 that I'm talking about.

the 4 GB cards have slower memory, 22 is what they will do. 8 GB cards usually have the faster memory and will do 24.5. Bios modding will yield about 24.7 and 28 respectively. Core clock has very little to do with speed on Ethereum, but it will affect dual mining. Overclocking memory sometimes makes the minor slower because the card will use looser timings if it is not bios modded. To help with tips you can set the minor process to a higher priority in Windows task manager, or experiment with -dcri.

Okay, so that solves that issue. I tried a Bios mod and it didn't seem to help at all, stayed at 22. It seems like I get 21 on average. Do you have any idea's about the fluctuating of the speed though?

I'm pretty sure that with a RX 480 4GB 1750mhz memory you should be doing about ~27 mh/s eth with modded bios and a bit higher mem speed. Modded 8gb cards with 2000mhz+ mem speed are capable of ~30mh/s. Depending on the coin, dual mining can take the speed down a bit as seen from my rx 480 1200/2100mhz dual mining eth/sc: https://gyazo.com/42527769f77e8672d3e85b61df651082 vs eth/pascal: https://gyazo.com/6024bbe014d3542edd0e41601ee73a5b(i'm running lower intensity with eth/pascal so that's why its still pretty fast with eth).
So i would say that something is wrong, and you should try troubleshooting it. Try changing drivers to the latest ones or Catalyst (Crimson) 15.12, try changing the settings on the miner and try other clock/mem speeds on your GPU to see if it gets faster...

I tried a different Bios, but I couldn't find many that looked promising for a 4gb card with Hynix memory. I've also OCed the Mem speed to 1825, but didn't see a difference in the speed, I can't figure that out, or why the speed fluctuates like it does.
