Just a password to send....The function can be optional.

Nxt is decentralized, u can ask the password million times but it won't make ur account more secure if u use a weak master password.

For the record, I hereby vote for implementing an optional 2 factor authorization scheme via cellphone SMS as soon as possible.  All in favor, say aye?

Oops, wrong key on edit.

Well. Thought for sure it couldn't happen to me. but just had all of NXT stolen out of my account. yey..

Complete NIGHTMARE!   Sad Angry Sad

It's a nightmare I have often.

I am terrified of keystroke loggers.  The more widespread NXT becomes, the more keystroke loggers are going to be deployed to steal it.  That's a fact.

I am only running my main NXT account on an old XP laptop that I sanitized by doing a zero bit overwrite of the hard drive and reinstalling the OS from a Dell reinstall disk followed by the minimal add-ons like Java etc being brought over on a CD instead of via online downloads.   This laptop is now used for NXT and that's it.  I'm working on creating a second identical sanitized laptop as a backup.  I have a hidden and uncommented local handwritten copy of my random password generated offline on the laptop using Awesome Password Generator 1.4 from Google (you know, the guys that are secretly partnered with the NSA) and another handwritten copy in my bank vault safe deposit box.

I still worry.

I understand that the user space is unimaginably huge at something like (I think I remember seeing) 10^70 - but still.  One lucky hit by somebody else miskeying their own password under the current scheme, and it's all over for you.  That's a fact, too, mitigated only by just how much luck the thief would need to have.  I've got a degree in math and I understand probability and it still doesn't do much to calm the reptilian fear in my brain.

Is there a separate white paper PDF someplace that goes over in detail from scratch / first principles the entire NXT security scheme and just the security scheme?  If not, there needs to be.  We are going to have to point specifically to that information over and over and over as more and more people come to risk larger and larger sums that the security scheme is adequate - particularly when single colored coins are made that could be worth millions of regular NXT.

So, bottom line, I think we need a security whitepaper PDF and a link to it.

We could also tie it to the actual price to buy a cup of coffee or a big Mac for example. If we want NXT to be used in a widespread scale like buying food, gas, coffee then the fee has to be proportional. If a cup of coffee cost generally 2-3$, the minimum should no be over 10 cent. Basically tie the fee to purchasing power.

Funny you should mention Big Macs as a standard price index...

Trying to get 0.4.8 going...can somebody tell me the current correct block number / height?
608  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: December 30, 2013, 04:19:31 PM

1. create an aliases with the uri: "acct:YOURACCOUNTNUMBERHERE@nxt"
2. wait a little bit for propagation
3. check http://22k.io/YOURALIAS

When I created my alias for my main account, I left the uri blank.  How do I change it now?

Assign it again with the new URI and 1 nxt fee.
I did so and see you have paid the bounty, thx.

When I reassigned the alias with a new uri, the alias page never came back with the transaction number in the response box.  I got tired of waiting and just closed it.  There were already three confirms by the time I logged back on.

BTW, am I missing something?  Is there a way to page back from someplace like an alias page back to the main account page without having to enter the whole long passcode again?

I heard there is a work in progress to maintain the site nxtcrypto.org as the official voice for Nxt project, but until then (and maybe even after that)
all Nxt core communication will remain here (at least for me)!

I have made a deal with Intel to try an post NXT news stories regularly at http://info.nxtcrypto.org/ for a while to build up readership at his new news site there.  Blabbing seems to be my main contribution I can make to NXT....

Here's the first two I posted:

613  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: December 29, 2013, 11:44:00 PM

Oh, so X is price and Y is amount of NXT?  I'm not much on technical analysis.  Is that bullish or bearish looking?

I would say bearish because there are a lot more people looking to sell than to buy, and some of them may jump the gap and "hit a buy" ahead of the others.

But you can never be sure.  A big buyer can keep his desire off the bid and unknown to let sell orders pile up, then come from nowhere to gobble them all up if he's looking to establish a big position.

I lost a bundle a long time ago daytrading stocks.  Remember what Obi Wan said about Mos Eisley?  That's an exchange.
614  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: December 29, 2013, 11:39:44 PM

Once more: we should separate all Nxt core-global activities and reputations from all third-party sites-forum-exchanges , these sites are welcomed, but there should not be a legitimacy relation between them and Nxt as the core project.

Huh - I thought that WAS the official NXT forum.  So...is THIS THREAD on Bitcointalk considered the OFFICIAL thread?  Are there others that are recognized by the paid dev team as official?

I keep popping in and out here because this dang thread is so hard to keep up with continuously, but I always keep coming back because this is obviously where The Cool Gang hangs out.

Oh, and CfB too, of course....  Smiley
615  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: December 29, 2013, 04:24:17 PM

This is true.  It can only be "positively" identified as being sold when it is withdrawn from Dgex by the buyer.  That's the criteria I was using to say "20% had changed hands in 30 days at Dgex".  I was assuming 200M had been WITHDRAWN.  Now I find out that 75M has been shuffled into a Dgex storage account.  This means only 125M has been withdrawn, or around 12-13%, not 20%.  This matters because salsacz has a very bold "30%" claim front and center in her video.  That number needs to be researched and corrected a single time now, not explained as an error to critics a million times a month from now.

You don't suppose a new video with new numbers should be made after each 1% is withdrawn or deposited back to the exchange just to respond to the critics, do you?

No, I suppose that a video should be as accurate as possible on the one day it is issued for general public consumption.  After that obviously it will be OBE (overtaken by events).  But if the video overstates the progress made to date about redistribution of NXT into widespread use, it's gonna get labeled as false propaganda instead of a factual introduction.  This would be bad and is to be avoided at all costs.  Particularly if "all costs" = "prerelease fact-checking".
616  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [BOUNTY] Announcements for Nxt (the first pure POS coin) on: December 29, 2013, 04:14:04 PM
Scenario for corrections:

1.   What is Next?

2.   In past you could barter, pay by gold or paper money, such as American Dollar. Recently people started to use digital currency called Bitcoin. But it was too slowly, unsecure and needed too much of the computer power. After Bitcoin and his clones experienced some ups and downs, the second generation cryptocurrency was born. Fast, secure and green Nxt.

3.   Nxt focuses on decentralization. All transactions and wallets are decentralized and kept on the network. With decentralized peer to peer exchanges you don’t have to pay high fees to the providers. Decentralized DNS improves the security and protects you from censorship. Alias is a very cool function that brings us to the whole new level. Don’t be just a number! Welcome to the 2014!

4.   Never forget, that Nxt is brand new software. This is no fork of Bitcoin!

5.   The initial Nxt distribution process was completely fair and very public. People were advised to send Bitcoin to the genesis address in exchange for NXT. All NXT coins were sold to the original stakeholders. Now they are selling, donating or using Nxt to pay for work on the coin. 30% of Nxt money has changed the owner after three weeks. Do you know, only 22% of all existing Bitcoins have been transferred in 4 years of Bitcoin existence?

6.   As a first cryptocurrency of the second generation, Nxt has a lot to provide. There is no such thing as Bitcoin mining in Nxt. The system of next mining is very green in power consumption, since Proof of Stake mechanism doesn’t require massive amounts of hashing power. Selfish proof of work mining problem was finally solved. The price of NXT will never be affected by miners! Users gain transaction fees for maintaining the next network. The more coins you have, the more blocks you will generate, but the amount you get per block is dependent on the transaction fees included in the block. Remember: Everyone gets the same return of investment.

7.   Nxt’s code supports colored coins, - a way to designate specific coins - and tie them to physical property. How it works? You send your currency to the gateway.  The gateway issues the asset on the next network via colored coins.  That asset is then transferable on Nxt.  All kinds of virtual currencies or other commodities will be able to be traded via the Nxt network!

8.   There will also be many socializing features, not only an Alias. You will be able to chat and send messages to other users – always via peer to peer connections. Because of no central leadership, people will be able to vote about some important events, such as releasing the whole source code to the public.

9.   Nxt brings a new revolution for crypto currency. Next generation of crypto currency. Now we will have a currency and infrastructure which is based on a 100% original code base, 100% green, accessible to anyone on the planet, truly secure, and fast.

[/quote]

Salsacz, below is how I would edit your script.

One note about your visuals - when the prisoner sees his number change into a name, he should smile and his clothes should change into something happy.

I still think you need to verify the 30% claim in the video.  There is new information; apparently Dgex is keeping 75 million NXT in a seperage account for storage.  I recommend you message Graviton and discuss it with him - he is the owner of the Dgex exchange.

1.   What is Next?

2.   In the past you could barter, pay by gold or use paper money such as the American dollar. Recently people started using a digital currency called Bitcoin. But it was too slow, too insecure, and needed too much  computer power.  After Bitcoin and its clones experienced ups and downs, a second generation cryptocurrency was born: fast, secure and green Nxt.

3.   Nxt focuses on decentralization.  All transactions and wallets are decentralized and kept everywhere on the network, not isolated offline. With decentralized, integrated peer-to-peer exchanges you don’t have to pay high fees to service providers.  Decentralized DNS improves  security and protects your privacy.

4.   This is no fork of Bitcoin!  Always remember that Nxt is brand new software.

5.   The initial Nxt distribution process completely fair. People were asked on a public forum to send one Bitcoin to the genesis address in exchange for NXT.  All NXT coins were divided among the original stakeholders who responded. Now they are selling, donating or using Nxt to pay for further work on the coin. 30% of Nxt money has changed hands  after three weeks. Did you know only 22% of all existing Bitcoins have been transferred in 4 years of Bitcoin existence?

6.   As a second generation cryptocurrency , Nxt has much to offer. There is no such thing as Bitcoin mining in Nxt, so the price of NXT will never be affected by miners!  Bitcoin's Proof-of-Work mining problem has been solved by the Nxt Proof-of-Stake system that doesn’t require massive amounts of hashing power and so is very green in power consumption.   To maintain the Nxt network, users are rewarded for generating transaction blocks and claim the transaction fees paid by others that are embedded in the generated blocks.  The total number of blocks generated by a user is proportional to their owned share of all Nxt coins in circulation, so everyone gets the same return on investment for their support of the Nxt network.

7.   Nxt’s code supports colored coins,  a way to designate specific coins  and tie them to physical property. How does this work? You send your asset to the Nxt exchange gateway and the gateway issues the asset on the Nxt network via colored coins.  Your asset is then transferable on Nxt.  All kinds of virtual currencies or other commodities will be able to be traded via the Nxt network!

8.   Nxt also has many socializing features.   Alias is a very cool function that brings cryptocurrency into 2014: be identified by any name you want, not just a long number!   You will also be able to chat and send messages to other users from the Nxt client interface– always via peer to peer connections.  With no central leadership, Nxt users will be able to vote about some important events such as releasing the whole source code to the public.

Turned out it's the DGEX reserve account with 75 mil  Cool
What is your source for this statement?  If true, it totally invalidates salsacz's video claim that 30% of NXT has changed owners in 21 days or my analysis that 20% had done so thru Dgex in 30 days...

why would it invalidate anything?
reserve account doesn't mean DGEX necessarily owns all of NXTs in it, it's just users of DGEX store their NXTs there, it's their trade money.

Same goes for bitcoin exchanges, some of the biggest bitcoin wallets are actually exchanges' wallets with thousands of users owning bitcoins in those wallets.

If it's still in storage at DGex it hasn't changed hands yet on the exchange and still belongs to the depositor.  It can't be counted as NXT that has found a new owner yet until it's actually sold.

We don't know what fraction of that 75 million belongs to buyers and sellers. If I deposit 1 million NXT, sell it on dgex, and the person who bought it hasn't withdrawn it from the exchange it will remain in the dgex reserves. Yet the 1 million NXT is now belonging to and controlled by the buyer not the seller. etc

The real solution here is that Graviton and salsacz need to have a talk.

Someone is very rich & very interested in NXT:

Dgex' Account Went Down 20mil LOL
https://nextcoin.org/index.php/topic,1658.0.html

Rocket launch countdown?

Winklevoss twins?

It's an interesting spin to the discussion a few hours ago that Dgex has distributed 200M NXT to new owners.  While that is still probably true, that doesn't mean 200M has flowed down to the little guys to start smooth cash flow among many users in jumpstarting the NXT economy.  Those new owners can be just a few people interested in hoarding and a power grab.

In fact, the top 51 accounts (out of only 5829 total) are currently holding just under 787 million NXT.   Thus the average for accounts 52-5829 is under 37,000 NXT each - and you KNOW that's not a flat distribution, either.

Long way to go to get this currency spread.  We should think about helicopters (see: http://www.thestockenthusiast.com/opinion/how-bernanke-got-the-nickname-helicopter-ben-why-it-matters-right-now/).
