Gambling, neither drugs were responsible for his choices in life. He was responsible for his own actions. That is how things work in real world. Inanimate objects or activities can't be blamed for individuals' decisions. He decided to do drugs, and then to gamble in order to afford his initial addiction. Consequently, he suffered the consequences for his choices. You can't expect to sow apples and gather oranges... Evil seeds will develop into evil fruits. So, I don't think he ruined life is pointed at holding the gamble responsible for his waywardness.
