601  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: KFC to accept Bitcoin! on: January 26, 2018, 03:39:09 PM
Everyone is praising this as if it’s a good thing. Do any of you realize bitcoin isn’t ready for this? This thread is a joke thread to me because the fees are way to high to buy chicken. It takes too long for a confirmation which means some BitPay business will need to be a middleman and all they do is immediately cash out the sale for fiat. The immediate volume would crush the network and increase fees while overloading the mempool. None of you know a fucking thing about bitcoin.

I don’t have much Merit to give but I’m going to give it up until it’s all gone. I’m not sure if this is the right section for this thread because I’m not really selling anything. It’s about accounts so I’ll just leave it here until someone decides to move it. I don’t know if this is wrong to do. I don’t care if I get negative trust for doing this because I don’t buy anything here, sell anything here, join signature campaigns or post routinely in threads that even show the trust rating. Essentially I don’t make money here so I don’t use trust anyway.

I felt sorry for SOME of the members that posted in the merit thread. They seemed to be fairly articulate, fairly knowledgeable, rational and really trying to be members of this group of dreamers (community).

Here’s how it’s going to work. You’re not just going to beg for merit and I give it. Do not PM me and offer to pay me for merit points. Your money means nothing to me. I have given away more bitcoin than you will likely earn while on this forum (just ask Gleb Gamow if you don’t believe me). I will report you to a mod that will give you negative trust for being a potential scammer. You will ask me to research your post history and direct me to 10-20 posts that you believe show you have a deep desire to learn about, use, and support bitcoin. I will then ask you a couple of questions about how bitcoin works and you will answer them. I don’t care if you take some time to research the answer if you come up with the correct answer. That just means I’ve made you learn more about bitcoin than you knew previously.

Bitcoin does not mean altcoin. I know altcoins are more popular on this forum than bitcoin. I don’t care. I will only help bitcoiners level up. If most of your post history is in altcoin threads I won’t help you. I do not consider Bitcoin Cash to be bitcoin. If you don’t know what the real bitcoin is then you haven’t been here long enough for me to help you. Which leads me to the group I’m willing to help.

New members, Newbies, Jr Members and Members don’t need any merit. They don’t have enough post history to judge so I won’t be helping them.

Full members, Sr. Members and Hero Members really got screwed with the merit system. Some of them were really close to leveling up and now have to wait until they’ve impressed the right person to probably get only one merit point from them. The most extreme case of this is Hero Member. They may need hundreds of merit points to level up which could take a very long time to get.

You will be working for 20 merit points. Good luck to all. I will announce when they’re gone and lock the thread.

If you don't care about the things i care about, just go away..
Wow! How..er..um..Legendary?
Sheesh.

I still believe this is a bitcoin forum. When I first came to this forum there were no altcoins. I believe every time another altcoin is born it dilutes bitcoins user base slightly. You are asking me to give you something for free. You're not paying so you can’t modify the rules. Maybe someone in the altcoin section will do the same thing someday. If you borrow my car for free instead of renting it you can’t bitch because I won’t let you smoke cigarettes in it.

I gave you a merit for clearly showing people that their fear of bias (as to how merit will be distributed) is warranted

+1

Thanks, and I will pass that on to someone that needs it. I agree with you. The system is unfair to some people. That’s what I’m doing with this thread. I’m leveling the playing field. I’m sure you will get to the level you want someday. I’m not against lower ranks. Some of the better people here are below Member status from what I’ve seen. They just aren’t as hurt by the merit system as the upper ranks are.

606  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is the relationship between bitcoin and blockchain? on: January 26, 2018, 06:43:07 AM
The ideas behind the blockchain data structure have been around for a long time. Bitcoin wasn't a bolt of lightning from the heavens. There is a long history of people working on digital cash going back 20+ years. Some work as early as 1991, for instance. But at that time, the cryptography required to make it viable was embargoed in the US (classed as munitions). Then in 1996, executive order 13026 demilitarized strong cryptography, unleashing a lot of work in this area; Nick Szabo’s papers followed in 1997–1998, for instance. I’d say it’s reasonable that it took a decade, from 1998 until the bitcoin white paper in 2008, for the community to try a bunch of different approaches, finally discovering a combination that would work well enough to attract enough interest.

608  Other / Meta / Re: Nominating DannyHamilton for a Merit Source (Quoted 10 Posts Inside) on: January 25, 2018, 07:13:00 PM
DannyHamilton would be a great merit source but it’s hard to choose that because DeathAndTaxes was equally as helpful and knowledgeable until he scammed a bunch of people and ran away. At one point, I would have sworn on a stack of bibles that Gerald Davis was a god among men.

No offense Danny, I’m just saying it’s impossible to ever really know what anyone here is willing to do in the long run.

Technically merit has nothing to do with scamming. A scammer should get neg trust regardless of their merit and vice versa. Not sure if being a merit source would make anyone seem more trustworthy. Not to me for sure. But then again, there has always been confusion between rank with trustworthiness here, especially among noobs.

Of course not, I wasn’t implying that it did. If someone that was knowledgeable and helpful like DnT became a merit source he could use being a source to upgrade his supporters (shills). Whether you want to believe it or not, newbies trust Legendary members way more than they should. TradeFortress is the perfect example of a thieving asshole that was trusted way more than he should have been based on his rank and experience. Merit is now the way to gain rank. It will be abused.

I nominate OgNasty for president and holder of the sMerit.

While I’m here, I would also like to nominate Stephen Gornick and MoonShadow who obviously lost their accounts to a hack or sold them outright a few years ago.

611  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: criminals:more use btc or dollar? on: January 25, 2018, 05:52:21 PM
Of course not, because at this price point there are simply more dollars than there are bitcoins. The value of each coin needs to increase exponentially for bitcoin to overtake the dollar in illegal transactions.

Here’s the way to ask that question. As a percentage of the total amount of available dollars and available bitcoins are bitcoins used more than dollars for illegal activity? As an example, do people use 2% of the available dollars for illegal activity and 20% of the available bitcoins for illegal activity? Which one would be a higher percentage of criminal use?

I would answer that question by saying that bitcoin was invented to allow people to send money to each other without the need for a trusted third party. Illegal activity wasn’t why it was created. However, it also bypasses normal banking, oversight and government regulation as an ancillary benefit (or drawback, depending on your perspective). Because of this bitcoin is more useful for illegal activities than the dollar is and is probably used more to that end. Silk Road at one point was almost the entire bitcoin economy. So that was provably true in the beginning.
612  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: January 25, 2018, 05:24:44 PM
Interesting idea. So this merit system is similar to a social media like correct?

I like the idea because it will make it harder for individuals to farm and sell accounts.

Now they sell not only accounts, but merrits as well

Not easy to sell merit points, anyone can check from where you got merits and it will reveal identity of merit giver and if it's look suspicious can be easily caught.

I think you’re assuming status helps only scammers. Jumping in ranks helps you get on a sig campaign and determines how much money you make. No one will “check where you got merits“ if you're not trying to scam them.

Wow, begging for merit in the merit announcement thread. Thanks for that! I just laughed so hard I shot the chocolate milk I was drinking out my nose.

You have framed an historic moment. The first merit-beggar begging right in the middle of the Temple of Merits! We can now expecting Merit-Begging to become one of the major standard behaviors of the forum, until it will have to be forbidden, just like begging for coins.

Just like with beggars on the street, I would be willing to give to a beggar that’s creative. I would give this guy $10.

The best I can do is tree fiddy and as collateral my first born(not yet born, tbd).  Also as an added bonus I can include this bag of beans I've been holding onto which may or may not be magical.

That’s not a really good offer. Why should he take that? He did offer to throw in a ball cupping after all. I wouldn’t have gone higher than an ass cupping myself.

Wow, begging for merit in the merit announcement thread. Thanks for that! I just laughed so hard I shot the chocolate milk I was drinking out my nose.

Two years from now? Could you imagine the schizophrenic seizure the blockchain and current system of mining farms would have with that level of transactions happening every day? LOL

Think about it logically, bitcoin couldn’t keep up with a $20k value which caused more than a 200k transaction backlog in the mempool. At that rate bitcoin was making roughly 5 transactions a second. At a $1mil price, all other things equal, that would be a 50 fold increase in the number of transactions. That’s 250 transactions a second with 10 million transactions stuck in the mempool regardless of the fee. ROFL

I checked a lot of topics again, and didn't noticed any received merits for a good posts, although I have noticed a lot of merits received for the high rank member posts like "You want some merit bro? Here you go hehehe" and responses to such posts like "Oh, thank you, I have sent some merits for you as well hehehe". What can I say about it, I don't think, that this system will stop spam and shit posting, and I'm pretty sure, that high quality posts will be rewarded with a merit, although I have already found a telegram groups, where merits are sold for 1$. Why do you need to send your merits for free if you can sell it, right? So this system is not solving the problem, but it already added some corruption and it gave many advantages for a senior members, and gave a lot of disadvantages to the newbies. This forum is not facebook, why it is necessary to have "likes"? And I'm just curious, what was the motivation to put such ranking system - to get a full member rank, you need to gain 10x more merit, than for a member. I don't think it will stop creation of multiple accounts, as some strange activities were noticed already:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2439743.msg28861940#msg28861940 - 7 merit points were received for the question "How much merit points newbie need to receive, before he can post in other section?"

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2770539.msg28896442#msg28896442 - 50 merits for "Right, yesterday he told, that he saved 9% of coins"

High quality posts, huh?

I have few thoughts regarding this. First of all, this could be implemented with purpose to raise the price on the accounts with senior ranks. Admin informed us, that moderators will not moderate merits, than why do we need this? I find it quite suspicious. Secondly, it will help hero/legendary members to save their profits in the bounty campaigns. Now it will be difficult to reach senior ranks, and new rivals will rarely appear. That's my point regarding this new system. Embarrassed
Totally agree with most of the ideas. The current merit system will tie up the opportunities to be Members, Full Members and Senior Members. Those old accounts dont worry about that, but the new ones have to face harshly with those new rules, with merit ranking.
Personally, I think admin and moderators of the forum should focus on how to release new, more strictly screening system for investigating spamming accounts, which post non-sense, shit posts most of the time. After that, banning those accounts permanently. That's rule might be better than the current merit system.

Please consider about the idea. Tie up spamming discovering system, and more strict banning rules (permanently bans)

Jesus Christ, “investigations”? Really? They don’t have time to do all of that. What you’re suggesting is the reason they’re trying the Facebook solution. Even taking into account all of the multiple users that belong to one person there’s still around a million members (1 to 7 thousand online at once) making thousands of new posts a day. Seriously dude, how is any group smaller than an army of mods supposed to do that. This is the automated system you want that can screen shitposters without automatically banning the wrong person by mistake.

Wow, this thread proves that all men are brainless Neanderthals. The sexism in this thread goes way above and beyond my wildest expectations. I’m surprised all women aren’t lesbians.

Hey, all of you important moderator type peeps out there. You wanna check out this thread? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2819169.0

Google translate sucks but it was good enough for me to get the gist of that’s happening.

Note that it's not stated anywhere yet by the mods that you can't sell/buy (s)merit points, so they aren't actually infringing any rule yet. I'm taking the first post of this thread as reference of course, not some n-th reply.

It’s not that I think it’s wrong (check my signature). I pointed out in my first post in this thread that it would be interesting to see how long it would take for someone to game the system. It took less than a day. LOL
