http://www.businessinsider.com/meredith-whitney-on-detroit-2013-7Meredith Whitney: ' Detroit Will Start A Wave of Municipal Bankruptcies' There are five more towns like Detroit in Michigan alone. There are many more municipalities across the country in similar positions. At the root of the problem is the incentive system that elected officials used to face. For decades, across the US, local leaders ran up tabs for future taxpayers; they promised pensions and other benefits for public employees that have strong legal protection. That has been a great source of patronage for elected officials: they can promise all sorts of future perks to loyal supporters (state and local workers) with very little accountability on the delivery of those promises.

That is cheap but dont you have to wait 4 days to get coins? and dont they cancel orders when the market conditions change?
nope, I have level 2 verification and can and have done instant bitcoin purchases, and have yet to see an order cancellation.

For me it is 1% plus 0.15 bank fee, I consider this fair.
To purchase 5 bitcoins right now, it would cost me $4.65 plus the cost of the bitcoin itself.
Even if you are buying the max per day of 50 btc that is around $45-$50 for instant btc purchase.
If they choose to keep the 1% fee when the price of btc goes to 10,000 then I would say that is a little hefty but we have a little bit before that happens.

http://ubuntuforums.org/announce.htmlUbuntu Forums is down for maintenance
There has been a security breach on the Ubuntu Forums. The Canonical IS team is working hard as we speak to restore normal operations. This page will be updated with progress reports. What we know
Unfortunately the attackers have gotten every user's local username, password, and email address from the Ubuntu Forums database. The passwords are not stored in plain text, they are stored as salted hashes. However, if you were using the same password as your Ubuntu Forums one on another service (such as email), you are strongly encouraged to change the password on the other service ASAP. Ubuntu One, Launchpad and other Ubuntu/Canonical services are NOT affected by the breach.
Progress report
2013-07-20 2011UTC: Reports of defacement 2013-07-20 2015UTC: Site taken down, this splash page put in place while investigation continues. 2013-07-21: we believe the root cause of the breach has been identified. We are currently reinstalling the forums software from scratch. No data (posts, private messages etc.) will be lost as part of this process. 2013-07-22: work on reinstalling the forums continues.

Hello,
You are receiving this message because you have an account registered with this address on ubuntuforums.org.
The Ubuntu forums software was compromised by an external attacker. As a result, the attacker has gained access to read your username, email address and an encrypted copy of your password from the forum database.
If you have used this password and email address to authenticate at any other website, you are urged to reset the password on those accounts immediately as the attacker may be able to use the compromised personal information to access these other accounts. It is important to have a distinct password for different accounts.
The ubuntuforums.org website is currently offline and we are working to restore this service. Please take the time to change your ubuntuforums.org account password when service is restored.
We apologize for any inconvenience to the Ubuntu community, thank you for your understanding.

In total I have purchased 100 GH/s of mining gear due to be delivered* sometime between September and October.
I am estimating that 1 GH/s in September/October will earn ~0.01 btc per day, do you guys feel that this assessment is high or low or about right? This estimation is based upon my own gear earning .0175 @ ~850 MH/s up until about last week, when I shut it down.
Is it reasonable for me to expect that 100 GH/s will earn 1BTC per day in September/October? Or do you expect it to be more like 0.50-0.75 per day? Or even less?
*The devices will not be delivered per say but hosted and hashing.
Your thoughts and math are appreciated.

Really? another at least BFL... post? And you call THAT shady? Well, I am out for two weeks, I am brimming with confidence that this thread will be wasted with stupid/lazy/troll posts up to page 300 when I come back.
Stupid is pre paying 6 months of hosting for a device which may or may not exist 2 months from now. I'm still optimistic about KNC, but am trying to be realistic. Sorry about the comparison with BFL but what other providers offer hosting services? Last I heard, steamboat is offering hosting, same with terratrash, but... see any of my posts about them to see what I think.

The only question is: where is the money? Someone obviously took it, and IMO pirateat40 was just a poor sucker, in all this scam.
Didn't he ''invest'' the coins in another ponzi? You know what? That's a valid point! Maybe not a ponzi, per se, but a business. I believe that Trendon Shavers was the VC that funded BF Labs Inc. I think the SEC should look into Butterfly Labs to make sure that wasn't the case. It sure would explain why BFL never stated who the VC was, in spite of many request. Phinnaeus, You need to try harder on this crusade youv'e got going on bfl, do something that really affects their business and then you've got something! Maybe a couple of websites, some adwords campaings etc.

What do you think about the chances they will charge everything on BTCT as illigal investment offerings?
I think they are pretty good, actually. From the attendant Investor Alert: " the fraud may also involve an unregistered offering or trading platform" and, here's the real kicker: " Any investment in securities in the United states remains subject to the jurisdiction of the SEC regardless of whether the investment is made in U.S. dollars or a virtual currency. In particular, individuals selling investments are typically subject to federal or state licensing requirements." I have, of course, counseled my clients on this point for some time. Looks like I was right. Attention Unregistered Exchanges, Perpetual Mining Bonds (PMBs), REITs, and other members of the Bitcoin investment space: The SEC has explicitly indicated its intention to apply the already-existing laws to your security. You are selling securities in violation of the Securities Laws. Come into compliance, and do it quickly. any comment for those of us on the investor side of the equation? i.e. folks that are purchasing stocks, bonds, etc on these exchanges?
