6081  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: ELECTRUM WALLET on: July 23, 2016, 08:29:09 PM
Please do not make duplicate posts as you just did by creating another thread that describes the same problem.

Your question is hard to understand. There is no such thing as "portfolio". Can you please explain the issue with more detail and less caps?
6082  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wallet suddenly empty on: July 23, 2016, 07:44:33 PM
Is it normal that my Mac nearly overheats from downloading this Blockchain?
The fan is meanwhile blowing full speed and still I can nearly bake an egg on the alu housing...
Bitcoin Core is pretty hardware intensive, especially when it has to index the blocks (as with downloading or reindexing). I wouldn't say that this is normal per se, but it certainly is not uncommon nor unexpected.
6083  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Problem with Bitcoin Core Wallet, I can't get my coins on: July 23, 2016, 05:48:24 PM
Hey there knightdk! Thanks for that! It worked, Bitcoin Core restarted perfectly and was able to resync again! Great news, hahahahaha! I tried your "Prunning" solution though but the system gave me: Error: Cannot parse configuration file: the options configuration file contains an invalid line "prune". Only use key=value syntax.
Try
Code:
prune=550
6084  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wallet suddenly empty on: July 23, 2016, 05:46:51 PM
I started the program after following instructions.

Now the program started with "synchronizing with network"
That means it has to download again the whole amount of GB's of data like the prog done it before?
That is correct. Because the "blocks" folder was missing, it needs to redownload the entire blockchain since that is stored in the "blocks" folder.

B.t.w. this time I got a question when starting Bitcoin Core, It asked if I wanted to store on Desktop or custom location, Application Support.
I have chosen Application Support.
Yes, that is good.

This program Bitcoin Core is not for faint-hearted...

Of coarse I keep backups!

Now see how long it will take to pull in the whole Block chain.

Should I keep all debug files, etc that are still on Desktop?
After removing Bitstamp, it's files stayed also on my desktop... I don't know which ones belong to Bitcoin Core and/or to Bitstamp?
No, you don't have to. All of the files I told you to copy earlier can be deleted from the desktop.
6085  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wallet suddenly empty on: July 23, 2016, 04:53:52 PM
Hello Knightdk,

There is nowhere the file 'blocks' on my desktop? continue anyway?
That is a problem, but sure, continue anyways. Did you happen to delete anything between the time when this problem happened and now?
6086  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Problem with Bitcoin Core Wallet, I can't get my coins on: July 23, 2016, 04:29:10 PM
That looks like a great solution! I'll try it, but for now my bitcoin core wallet has the following error:"No block source available..." How can I get Bitcoin Core wallet to work again?

Thanks guys!!!!
Did you delete any files? If you did, you will need to delete the the entire blocks folder. Otherwise, you just need to start Bitcoin Core with the -reindex option. In windows, right click the shortcut for Bitcoin Core and choose "Properties". Then in the box labeled "target", move the cursor all the way to the right and type -reindex. Make sure there is a space between that and what is already in the box. Click "OK" then double click the shortcut to start Bitcoin Core. When it fully starts, you can do the same thing again to remove the option so it doesn't do that every time you start.
6087  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wallet suddenly empty on: July 23, 2016, 04:27:44 PM
Hello Knightdk,

I send it to you by mail.
Got it.

So the data directory that Bitcoin Core is using (for some reason) is /Users/test/Desktop. This is where you should put your wallet.dat file. If you have multiple wallet.dat files, make sure that you use the one that has the older creation date as that should be the one with your Bitcoin.

I highly recommend that you copy the data directory files to the default directory. First, go to Settings > Options and then click Reset Options in Bitcoin Core. Then shut it down. Then copy the following folders and files from /Users/test/Desktop to /Users/test/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin:
Code:
blocks
chainstate
database
banlist.dat
bitcoin.conf
debug.log
db.log
peers.dat
wallet.dat
If some of those files don't exist, that is fine. The only files and folders that matter here are blocks and wallet.dat. If the Bitcoin folder doesn't exist, make it.

When you next start Bitcoin Core, it should be using the default data directory. To check if it is, open the debug.log file and look for the line with today's date and "Using data directory". The path listed should be the default one (/Users/test/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin)
6088  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wallet suddenly empty on: July 23, 2016, 04:07:39 PM
Hello Knightdk,

There is also other folders on the desktop, Log files, debug.log, peers.dat.
That should confirm my suspicion that the data directory is your desktop. That is a problem though and I still need to see the log.

I tried to post the content of the debug log file, it contains more then 64.000 characters and can't be posted for that reason.
(limitation to the forum software.)
How can I send the log file?
Go to http://pastebin.com/. Paste it into the box, click "create a new paste" and then share the link of that paste.
6089  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Problem with Bitcoin Core Wallet, I can't get my coins on: July 23, 2016, 04:04:59 PM
Hey there guys!

This is definitely going to be the post of a total newbie so please keep up with me!
OK, just so you've got the context:
  • I was able to buy 0.081 coins from an exchange (so far so good)
  • I wanted to transfer it to my wallet (which is Bitcoin Core's wallet) and to do that I clicked "Receive" in the wallet app (Win 7, 64 bits just FYI).
  • I hadn't read all the Bitcoin wallet description (that you need at least 80Gb of free space to install fully the Bitcoin core wallet). I know, first newbie dumb step... but you already know how we are.
  • As you can imagine my HD rapidly went full and I couldn't access my bitcoin wallet anymore. Once I clicked on the wallet it gave me the error: "Not enough free space" and immediately shut down...
  • So like any other newbie I tried to fix it myself.... I figured, the wallet app is just downloading all the past bitcoin transactions, I simply delete all these downloaded transactions, well I'll be able to access my wallet again and import it in my new online based wallet (I created an online based wallet in the meantime).
  • Now I know that the transfer was done (I can trace the transfer on Blockchain.info) and I could import that into my online based wallet but as "Watch only", I can't seem to get to funds or use them. (I would like to transfer the funds from the address I generated with Bitcoin Core Wallet to my online based wallet).[

Can you help me?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best!
First of all, I highly recommend that you not use an online wallet. You had the right idea that the historical transactions (they are actually blocks) can be deleted, but you need to tell Bitcoin Core that that is happening. This is called pruning. You have to enable pruning. To do so, go to the Bitcoin data directory (see https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Data_directory#Default_Location for defaults). Find the file named "bitcoin.conf". If it does not exist, create it. Just make a text file, but make sure that the extension of the file is .conf and not .txt. Then just put
Code:
prune
into that file, save it, and restart Bitcoin Core. It will delete part of the blockchain for you, and continue syncing. It should only be using a few Gb, not the full 80 Gb. Once it is done syncing, you can use the wallet as normal.
6090  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory to show full blockchain (workaround) on: July 23, 2016, 01:09:32 PM
I see, I looked around and found some info about all that.

So, the place to go for now in order to get 0.94 is https://github.com/goatpig/BitcoinArmory ?
Yes. That is also where all future releases of Armory will be hosted.
6091  Other / Meta / Re: Question about Forum finances on: July 23, 2016, 02:39:27 AM
This means that the money to cover the expenses of the forum comes from advertising and donations?
Yes. AFAIK most of the money for expenses come from old donations that the forum has had for several years.

I see that Forum project software cost $ 1,151,595.23 in 2014. this means that in 2016 the cost to keep the forum will be higher.

As the forum intend to pay many expenses this year?

Who are the developers forum? are members of the staff or theymos program alone?

Excuse me for asking so many questions I'm just curious.
Err, why do you say that the cost to keep the forum will be higher? Once the software is done, there will be no need to spend any money on Forum Software.

You know looking at the simple design of this forum, it is almost hard to believe that a sum as large as that flows through on a daily basis.
What does the design of the forum have to do with the amount of money that the forum makes and spends? I'll tell you: NOTHING!! Please stop spamming
6092  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wallet suddenly empty on: July 23, 2016, 01:32:49 AM
which should be ~/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin

Unfortunately there is no such folder in Application Support named Bitcoin.
Now what to do?
Well that is a problem. That is the default data directory for Bitcoin, and when it first runs, it should make the folder there. However, because Bitcoin Core did run, that means that the data is going elsewhere.

Since you mentioned that the wallet.dat file was on your desktop, do you also see any folders named "blocks" "database" or "chainstate" on the desktop? Any files named peers.dat, banlist.dat, or debug.log? It may be possible that the desktop somehow became Bitcoin Core's data directory.

Concerning posting the log file data here, I don't know what private data it holds, so i don't wanna put it online.
What to me looks like abracadabra could hold vital info.
I guarantee you that the debug.log file contains absolutely no information that puts any of your Bitcoin at risk. It is intentionally designed to be shared with others in order to diagnose issues. The only "vital information" are the paths to the data directory and the wallet, which is what we are looking for right now. If you don't feel comfortable posting them publicly, feel free to PM me the file.

No way I can reconnect the .dat wallet file back to the correct place on my mac?
The issue is that we cannot do so without knowing the data directory. Right now the only way (that I can think of) to find the data directory is to use the debug.log file.
6093  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory to show full blockchain (workaround) on: July 22, 2016, 09:58:44 PM
I have it all working now with 0.93, but I'll try a clean 0.94 install just for fun.

You guys  could consider pushing 0.94 on the Armory website, currently it's pointing to 0.93.3

https://www.bitcoinarmory.com

https://www.bitcoinarmory.com/download/
goatpig doesn't control that website.
6094  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum "Error: Could not import PyQt4 on Linux systems" on: July 22, 2016, 07:12:41 PM
Did you try
Code:
sudo apt-get install python-qt4
6095  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wallet suddenly empty on: July 22, 2016, 12:38:14 PM
Immediately, while trying to make the recommended back ups, I am lost...

You write: Also, backup any wallet.dat stored in here: ~/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin/

This path I can't follow, cause there is no support folder?
The folder is called "Application Support". It should be there by default on all Macs.

When I do a search for wallet.dat files on this mac, I find those 2 files under Applications/shared.
I now only hope I have the correct files backed up?
I took the ones I found on my desktop to back up.

I can't make these files visible?
Back those up, just in case.

Another problem is that I installed a Multibit wallet which is not used.
But this program created also .dat files and I can't distinguish which files belong to multibit and which ones to Bitcoin core...
Multibit does not use wallet.dat files

What do you mean by an "external drive"?, the only drive that I can point to as external is my Time machine.
Do you mean that by "external drive"?
An external drive means anything that is used for storage that isn't any of the internal hard drives. This could be a network share, a USB flash drive, a USB hard drive, your Time machine, etc.

2:

By: "The wallet.dat file is still present but the wallet doesn't read the content of it as it looks like.",

I meant: The file wallet.dat is still physically available on this mac but the program Bitcoin Core doesn't recognize it, or cant find the file.
In this wallet.dat file the content of the wallet is stored I suppose? a piece of Blockchain?
So If this file is still there, why doesn't Bitcoin Core program read it??
Could the file be in the wrong location? I did not tell the mac to put the wallet.dat file on the desktop, Bitcoin Core done that by itself.
The time I opened the wallet and the BTC's were still there, the wallet.dat file was also located on Desktop.
So before the program found the file in first instance and then later not any more. For me hard/not to explain.
This is not how Bitcoin Core, or most software for that matter, work. Software do not just search the entire computer for certain filenames (unless they are viruses). They will only look for the filename in specific folders, folders that usually the software made itself. Because the wallet.dat files were not in the data directory (which should be ~/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin), it does not see those files.

When you first started Bitcoin Core, you should have seen something that asked where you wanted the data directory. Did you change that to something other than the default location?

Did you, at any point, go to Settings and click on the button for "Reset options"? (Don't do that now, we just need to know).

Can you please provide the contents of the debug.log file? If you go to Help > Debug Window in Bitcoin Core, you should see a button labeled "Open" under something like "debug file". Click that and it should open the debug.log file. Copy the entire contents into a post here. If it does not fit, go to http://pastebin.com/, make a new paste, and post the link here.
6096  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin address on: July 22, 2016, 03:31:11 AM
Many services offer an API for receiving payments. These APIs give you an address to give to the buyer and then the service forwards the payment to an address that you set earlier.

Or you can use a local software such as Bitcoin Core or Electrum and use RPC calls to get the addresses.

Most API services, Bitcoin Core, and Electrum have documentation on the API or RPC that will help you with implementation. Sometimes they also have examples.
6097  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: This is a shame, but I would like to know what BIPs to read for my project on: July 22, 2016, 03:28:38 AM
BTW all BIPs are hosted at https://github.com/bitcoin/bips

What I'm looking for is to implement the feature of addresses generation, either from a seed or a master public key,
Look at BIP32 and then BIP44. If you want to also see the seed generation stuff, look at BIP39

sending coins to other addresses and addresses validation.
These are part of the original Bitcoin design, so there are no BIPs for them. For address encoding and validation, look at https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Base58Check_encoding. For spending Bitcoin, you should read https://bitcoin.org/en/developer-guide#transactions for how transactions work.

Also, it may be a good idea to take a read through guide, reference, and examples on https://bitcoin.org/en/developer-documentation
6098  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Another BTC Transaction.... Predicament? on: July 22, 2016, 03:11:53 AM
I'm using Windows 10 Home x64. I'll wait for your guys' responses before I proceed with the commands. I'm guessing I should back everything up prior, which I'll do now.
Yes, you should always backup your wallet.

To start Bitcoin Core with -zapwallettxes, first shut down Bitcoin Core. Then right click the shortcut on your desktop and choose "Properties". In the box labeled "Target", click it and move the cursor all the way to the right so that it is past what is already in there. Then type -zapwallettxes. Make sure there is a space between what is already there and what you typed. Then click "OK". Then double click the shortcut and it will start Bitcoin Core with that option. When Bitcoin Core has started, you can remove that option by repeating what you just did but remove instead of type.

So after this command, the unconfirmed transactions will disappear from "Recent transactions" and the BTC will return to my wallet balance?
Yes. You will now be able to spend your Bitcoin as if those unconfirmed transactions had never happened.
6099  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Another BTC Transaction.... Predicament? on: July 22, 2016, 02:52:25 AM
I sent a transaction on 7/14/16 without any tx fees (which was my fault, I admit). I actually opened a thread for that as well:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1552274

Since then, I have made some successful transactions that went through without any issues at all. It figures the biggest transaction I've ever sent would get stuck like this...

What to do?? I'm totally lost now.
The transaction you talked about in that thread is the same transaction which is blocking the transaction you are trying to send now. Do you still see that transaction (the one in the other thread) in your transaction list?Do you still need to send those Bitcoin?

I think the solution for you would be to start Bitcoin Core with the -zapwallettxes option. This will clear all of the unconfirmed transactions from your wallet. At that point you can then redo your transactions. It will be as if those two transactions had never happened in the first place.

Starting with -zapwallettxes is dependent on your os. What os do you use?
6100  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Another BTC Transaction.... Predicament? on: July 22, 2016, 02:04:26 AM
The problem is that it is spending from a transaction that doesn't seem to exist, d890605be31f55e0ce8e748b4b056bc7841aecf51bc95d5d3445799606f85df1. This transaction appears to have been dropped, and because of this, your transaction cannot confirm.

You will not lose any Bitcoin. If the transaction confirms, then it goes to the destination. If it is dropped from the network, then it will be as if that transaction had never existed in the first place.

Thanks knight. Do you know what would cause this even though I paid the recommended fee and "did everything correct," per se? At least, I hope I did.

I'm seriously thinking about switching to another wallet... but not exactly sure if it's the wallet's fault. It's all kind of confusing and not very user friendly.

Also, do you have any idea of a brief ETA on how long the transaction will either reach its destination or drop and be refunded? It'll be refunded right? I'm trying to figure out what "...then it will be as if that transaction had never existed in the first place" means.

Ugh, sorry for all of the questions. This is just frustrating.
It has nothing to do with the fee, although this should not have happened with Bitcoin Core. This is happening due to the way that Bitcoin works.

In order for a transaction to confirm, all of the transactions that it spends from must also be confirmed. What happened here is that one of the transactions you are spending from is unconfirmed, in fact, it has even dropped from the network. Because that transaction is not confirmed, your transaction cannot confirm either, regardless of the fee and priority.

The issue here is that your wallet let you spend from an unconfirmed transaction. This should not happen with Bitcoin Core. The only way that this could happen is if it were spending from the change output of that transaction. This means that one of your recent spends must have not confirmed. Double check your transaction history and see if you see any recent spending transactions that has a low fee.
