6081  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: So, where did my bitcoins go? on: October 10, 2012, 02:58:34 PM
It was taking a while so I exported my private key and opened a virtual wallet through blockchain.info, and it says I do not have any bitcoins. It says that, when I sent the 1.45, it sent the rest to a different address at the same time, within the same transaction.

The "rest" was sent to a "change" address (which is part of your wallet but not something you normally can see) - provided you haven't deleted things you will be able to retrieve your coins.

(you did keep a backup of the wallet?)
6082  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to securely spend coins from a compressed offline private key? on: October 10, 2012, 04:24:58 AM
I think the -22 error is actually detecting a "double spend" so presumably the tx was actually sent out (via blockchain.info) but perhaps it is just taking a while for it to be processed (even with the fee being paid).
6083  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: how do i see who/what deposited btc into my wallet? on: October 10, 2012, 02:38:08 AM
If the deposits are all to the same address then it's not likely you will be able to work it out - you need to use a different receive address (which you can then label) in order to properly organise your wallet.

I have played with bitaddress.org but AFAIA it doesn't let you create raw tx's.
6085  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Other uses of blockchain technology on: October 09, 2012, 05:24:27 PM
I just blame my own topic wandering on lost braincells due to abuse or age, but BenRayField works too. Smiley

Actually "er guo tou" is a pretty damn good excuse when you live in China also. Cheesy
6086  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Other uses of blockchain technology on: October 09, 2012, 05:16:44 PM
It's not. It just fits with the thread's topic.

Okay - maybe went a bit off topic then (must have spent too much time on that stuff before - that especially happens when you actually read a BenRayField post too closely).

Wink

Thanks for the link - as I suspected it in no way shows how a voter is actually limited to one vote (or even identified at all).

Sorry but this to me doesn't really seem like anything even slightly groundbreaking (just another IP money making exercise really).
6088  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Other uses of blockchain technology on: October 09, 2012, 05:01:39 PM
Ian, I believe the blockchain only figures into about 5% of their scheme. Per the author's idea:

Quote
It is used to commit to some election auditing data that must have been generated before the election starts for the audit to be valid.

Am sure this is correct but I simply could find no information regarding how the rest of the system is supposed to work (I actually did work out a system for doing voting on this forum that was publicly posted a long time back).
6089  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to securely spend coins from a compressed offline private key? on: October 09, 2012, 04:59:21 PM
I think that you've already got the basic idea (create/sign/send) - the "brainwallet.org" page I mentioned (stored offline) will just make the process easier for you (rather than using the low-level API for everything) although what you'll want to finally use is it's "raw tx" output.
6090  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Other uses of blockchain technology on: October 09, 2012, 04:52:56 PM
I think it's proof of concept rather than being a stab at implementation.

Well - I did read it and I can't see that it is actually a "proof" of anything.

It's not that I don't want such a thing to work but that paper does really nothing to show how it could work.
6091  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Other uses of blockchain technology on: October 09, 2012, 04:48:59 PM
The concept of a provably fair voting system is a great idea but I found nothing in that link to demonstrate that this has been achieved.

(the problem really comes down to being able to identify an individual without disclosing their identity)

I actually think the real change that the blockchain can make is to provide an "open accounting book" for non-profit organisations (which will be appearing in my own project soon).
6092  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Nefario on: October 09, 2012, 04:24:44 PM
If the exchange was in fact illegal, not disclosing this to all affected parties is by itself justification for a Scammer tag IMO.

Although not interested so much in the scammer tag discussion I am not quite sure how would such an exchange *know* it's being illegal without there being any actual legal precedent (AFAIA bitcoins are still legally undefined)?
6093  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Scammer tag question on: October 09, 2012, 03:59:15 PM
Indeed - I have started to wonder if all members of this forum will eventually end up labelled as scammers.

Cheesy
6094  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Scammer tag question on: October 09, 2012, 03:55:39 PM
Perhaps they are "Hero Scammers" Huh
6095  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: can i make bitcoin-qt to make more than 8 connection? on: October 09, 2012, 02:53:51 PM
is there a way to get more connection's

As was stated - this won't increase the speed of your blockchain download at all.

If you want to download it faster then better to download it as a file (that can be done from various sites) - although I guess it's now two files not one.
6096  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: CryptoXChange.com on: October 09, 2012, 02:41:33 PM
Hard to say exactly what went wrong but I never really saw any large volume trade there at all (even after the Tradehill collapse).

The website has always been slow (and the trading engine even more so) - it is my guess that they had hoped more volume would have produced more profits which would have let them employ more people and improve the software.

There are no other Aussie BTC exchanges that have really worked so I think the problem is simply that there is not enough demand for bitcoins down under.
6097  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: CryptoXChange.com on: October 09, 2012, 02:27:38 PM
Hopefully it hasn't become the next WBX yet.

It really is a pity that running an exchange in Aus seems to be perhaps just an unprofitable business at this stage.
6098  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: CryptoXChange.com on: October 09, 2012, 02:15:51 PM
Am not entirely sure if I follow that either, however, certainly it looks as though the bitcoin that you put in was moved out (perhaps along with other deposits).

If your second purchase has not been sent to the same address (which I'm guessing is likely assuming that the address they give you is only for depositing) then it is not really possible to determine your *actual* BTC balance (it is only a figure in their DB).
6099  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: CryptoXChange.com on: October 09, 2012, 01:57:39 PM
Certainly if their website contains false information it should be corrected ASAP (might be nice if one or other of the businesses concerned could comment). As for your withdrawal issue is the balance amount visible in the bitcoin address assigned to your account or only in their DB?
6100  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: CryptoXChange.com on: October 09, 2012, 01:47:32 PM
It does seem (from several recent complaint posts) that they are having some troubles recently but I haven't seen any evidence of any "scam" so it might be a little too soon to be posting in this board, however, as I stated in another thread the obviously small volume of BTC traded on their exchange makes it fairly understandable that they might be low on available human resources.

Hopefully they will soon be addressing these recent issues and more hopefully their trade volume will increase. Smiley
