6181  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Do poker and sports betting skills correlate? on: August 09, 2021, 01:07:18 PM
What are your thoughts on this, guys?

The "sample size" is too small for the "survey"  Wink
The fact that some people are more active, pretty good at poker and got lucky once at sports betting doesn't prove much  Wink
I don't think that there's any correlation. The main link is probably their activity.
6182  Economy / Speculation / Re: People are panic buying right now! on: August 09, 2021, 01:00:48 PM
It's amazing how people refuse to understand some things and constantly make the same mistakes - and most buy BTC only when the price goes up, instead of doing the exact opposite.

Psychologically people are more inclined to buy the trend than buy low.
In many cases this ends up by buying high and selling low, but.. yeah...  Roll Eyes
6183  Economy / Speculation / Re: People are panic buying right now! on: August 09, 2021, 11:17:31 AM
Haha now people are panic buying now as you can see bitcoin price already bounce back from $43,000 and back to $45,000 now just within a day. Those who saying bitcoin already end when it was fallen to $30,000 will regret it to didn't buy on that time.

LONG LIVE BITCOIN! TO THE MOON!

...and this how a new FOMO phase starts  Smiley
I was hoping for it for some weeks ago; I was "realistically" expecting it in September. We're in the middle. It's OK  Grin
6184  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Failed to Run Electrum after Updating on: August 09, 2021, 10:38:22 AM
One solution would be to get Electrum portable version, copy it somewhere you know and try to use that one.
You may want to make a copy of the wallet and use the Open from the portable electrum to get to your known data; you will also have to make the settings again. But I think that it should work.
Also in case you want the daemon too you may want to read https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/issues/5511
6185  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What do you think is the relationship between Bitcoin and blockchain? on: August 09, 2021, 08:55:01 AM
To be honest, I haven't learned to search for old posts on the forum.

This was internet search. But since you don't know how to search on the forum, I'll explain shortly:

1. There's the search offered by the forum, either from the search "tab", either the top-right quick-search box. Frankly, I'm no good friend of those  Smiley

2. You can use one of the search engines you like and do for example: "how to search" site:bitcointalk.org

The site:bitcointalk.org will make it search only in this forum.
If you use quotation marks you search for exact phrase; you will most probably search mostly without the quotation marks.
6186  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Home mining for non-KYC Bitcoin on: August 09, 2021, 08:48:51 AM
I'm  mining  bitcoin at home till now  and it's still profitable for me. To cover the cost of electricity I'm utilizing  the heat produced by ASICs to to heat my house and to calorify the  water for every day needs. This way I have no needs to pay for municipal heating and hot water supply (yeah, in my country those are still the municipal duty) .  Sure home mining put some duty on me on  support of the whole system including mining equipment, noise isolation, proper ASIC cooling etc. but if everything is done wisely it doesn’t take much time.

Impressive! But I hope that you can agree that people like you is a minority. One need certain knowledge (to make good use of that heat) and certain (very good) price for electricity to do this.
I didn't say that's unprofitable everywhere. I am aware that (few) people like you do exist.
6187  Economy / Economics / Re: China - everything is fine! But everything is bad ... on: August 09, 2021, 08:21:52 AM
China is implementing the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics. In China’s eyes, there is actually not such a strong class struggle. China needs to develop, and China will use all methods suitable for China to develop.

~snip~

Interesting theory. Perhaps that could make Chinese's "suffering tolerance" extremely high, thus revolt only happened at the very last.

“suffering”?If it makes my life better and better, I would rather “suffer”.Not unemployed at home.

You tell half-truth here, you conveniently forget people from certain regions and people who don't agree with the views of the party. And that is called shameless propaganda.

...And then you go on Meta and cry about discrimination?!
That's not nice. Not at all...
6188  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What do you think is the relationship between Bitcoin and blockchain? on: August 09, 2021, 08:11:42 AM
OP, have you done a quick search on the history of blockchain?
I've came easily to this page: https://www.icaew.com/technical/technology/blockchain/blockchain-articles/what-is-blockchain/history
Blockchain and digital coins too have a history from before Satoshi. He just put the pieces together perfectly and the result is a great implementation of blockchain and bitcoin as we know it. Blockchains can probably exist in different implementations too and they also clearly don't have to be public and hold bitcoin.

Blockchain is a special database. There are plenty of uses for blockchain and it can clearly exist without bitcoin.
Bitcoin runs on a public blockchain. Without the blockchain Bitcoin cannot exist. Period.
6189  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: About the popularity of Bitcoin on: August 09, 2021, 08:04:02 AM
For payment, with the Lightning Network, this is also more convenient, and novices will see it at first glance. But the popularity of Bitcoin is not so comprehensive. Half of the cryptocurrency people are just investing and do not consider using Bitcoin for payment because they feel that payment is a loss for them.

I think that you see only half of the glass...

Most people invest into bitcoin. One will not spend his investment just for the sake of it....
Bitcoin ecosystem is still small, but there are people who also earn bitcoin. Some mine for it, some work for it in various ways. Those earning bitcoin will see it as a currency and will more likely also try to spend some.
6190  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: About the popularity of Bitcoin on: August 09, 2021, 07:45:44 AM
I think that we keep forgetting that the number of people using bitcoin is still extremely small...

Bitcoin wallets are not even properly newbie-friendly. Making wallets and services friendly with blind people would be a step even farther. But I somehow tend to believe that it's not financially viable for somebody to invest that much time into developing such wallets (although really good newbie-friendly wallets is something I also think that we should have already and - arguably - we don't). And hobbyists will make the programs in the way they can use it (i.e. rather advanced and most probably not for blind people).

So I guess that more time has to pass (and with it adoption grow greatly) until we'll see the software and services you'd like.
6191  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2021-08-08] Elon Musk, Jack Dorsey, and Ted Cruz are among those criticizing pl on: August 09, 2021, 06:54:28 AM
Critics jumped on the idea. They said the tax rules would apply to a larger-than-planned group of crypto companies — some of which wouldn't be able to meet the reporting requirements.

And they're basically right. That law can easily make the industry move to more friendly countries.
Jack Dorsey made a tweet thread yesterday, quite well written imho, asking for better law and coming with proper arguments too.

Small change with great effect:

let’s simplify the definition of broker to what really matters: where digital assets are exchanged for fiat currency.

Broker = Fiat-to-Crypto Exchange.

Argument:

Forcing reporting rules on Americans who develop software and hardware, who mine and secure the network, or who run nodes to build resilience and efficiencies, is an impossible ask that will only drive development and operation of this critical technology outside the US.
6192  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help me differentiate this thought, teach a man how to fish or give him Bitcoin. on: August 08, 2021, 08:03:26 PM
The original of the parable says: "Give a man a fish, and he will be fed one day. Give a man a fishing rod, and he will be fed all his life."
It goes on to speak of a lazy student who also hoped to receive fish every day.

There was then a newer saying, some sort of mockery towards those who love to go fishing and it tells:
"Give a man a fish, and he will be fed one day. Give a man a fishing rod, and he will be gone all day long drink beer and pretend to be fishing."

Back to OP, it depends on the person you "give Bitcoin". Some will live long and will always have money to feed their family (selling some satoshi when in need and maybe even buy them back when possible, or get the taste and trade or simply earn/work for bitcoin), some others will sell all the coins at the first occasion they get (or first time there's a dip and some FUD).
6193  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Best Hard Drive for Bitcoin Node? on: August 08, 2021, 07:39:38 PM
WD Red (non-pro version) is good option, it's widely available and some enthusiast use it (usually people who hoard data or run their own physical server). It has 3 years warranty.

Especially at the non-pro drives, there's quite a problem with some of them (especially older) being CMR and many becoming SMR (cheaper and not that good).

I've bought a WD red (non-pro) for my NAS some 7 months ago and I've done some research back then, although I'm not that good with hardware. And I've seen back then a chart showing how much slower was a SMR compared to the "equivalent" CMR WD RED.
I've done a search now, I'm not 100% sure it was exactly this page, but will do (just check the EFRX vs EFAX comparison). Full story and images: https://www.servethehome.com/wd-red-smr-vs-cmr-tested-avoid-red-smr/

All in all, picking a non-pro WD Red (or Seagate Ironwolf - same story) may not be that easy.

Opening up the economy to create wealth and using the wealth created strategically to acquire more power in the world is what has made them so strong.

The problem lately seems to be that the party decided that they're too open and they need to enforce control in more places / companies.
And yeah, I am not convinced on how opened they were for real either, since the news that reach us are "filtered" so we are told almost only what makes them look good.
6195  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Home mining for non-KYC Bitcoin on: August 08, 2021, 07:05:31 PM
For now, from what I know, there are 2 problems here:
1. Home mining is in many places unprofitable.
2. "Clean" coins are overrated. From what I know there are far too few who want to pay for something as close as possible to freshly mined coins.

If one has too many solar panels on his roof then yes, it may worth to take a look, but otherwise the better chance is that's not economically viable at this point.
6196  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: HELP HERE on: August 08, 2021, 01:40:43 PM
provide a Bech32 address

If you want to provide a exchange bech32 address (as I've seen in your other post), keep in mind that most probably not all exchanges/services offer that.
One of the exchanges everybody heard about is Binance. They have 2 deposit addresses for bitcoin, one called BTC and one called BTC(SegWit). The second one is a (bech32) bc1* address.
If you (want to) use another exchange you have to ask specifically and people may be able to help you. Again, keep in mind that the service of your choice may or may not offer Bech32 address.

If you change your mind and just install a wallet locally, Electrum has Bech32 addresses and can afterwards send to any kind of address (1*, 3*, bc1*). Just make sure you download it from Electrum.org and verify its signature too.
6197  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: U.S. infrastructure bill and Bitcoin on: August 08, 2021, 01:06:51 PM
Does printing money in the US affect Bitcoin? So what if $3.5 trillion is passed, will we see an increase in the price of Bitcoin?

Probably the individuals won't do much, but institutional investors, which tend to be sensitive to the signs of inflation, may invest some more into Bitcoin.
Also if Bitcoin won't go up, then US dollar will go down. The result on the ticker will be a rise.
6198  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: F1 Formula Sports Racing - Sportsbet.io promotions & discussion thread on: August 08, 2021, 04:48:01 AM
On Vettel's disqualification, Aston Martin have now appealed it, claiming there was enough fuel in the tank.

Hm, I don't see that appeal to be ending in a success if there just wasn't enough fuel in the tank. I would be quite surprised because that's just an objective measurement which has to be in conformity with the rules right? If they appeal now, are they seriously appealing that the amount of fuel was measured wrongly? Or are they arguing on moral grounds?

They weren't saying that it was enough fuel. What they were saying is that the sensors have shown that there's enough fuel.

Since the team's data indicated that there was more than 1.0 litre of fuel in the car after the race – 1.74 litres according to the data

As much as I'd like to see Seb getting that place #2, I don't have much hopes for the decision get reverted.
6199  Economy / Economics / Re: Why would people ever use bitcoin if its expected to always go up? on: August 07, 2021, 05:41:51 PM
After reading several posts on this forum many people seem to think that Bitcoin will always go up. If this were to be the case, why would people spend Bitcoin at all? In this theoretical time, wouldn't it just be a poor financial decision to do?

1. Bitcoin goes up and goes down too. It has quite a wild range of price fluctuations. In general though, it goes up. But: I expect that after not too many more years the overall appreciation curve will no longer be this stiff and the "price going up" will not be such a big thing (it may go up at a rate similar to what current fiat goes down).

2. On short term, let's say from the monthly paycheck to the moment you'd spend (like for fiat) the price difference is quite often insignificant.

3. Although Bitcoin looks great now as long term investment, we don't live forever and we have to also "eat" today too. Hence:
- People who invested in the past does sell, at least now and then.
- People who earn bitcoin may sell now and then.
- Mining is a business. Miners pay for electricity and may have other expenses too. They also obviously sell.

So there are valid scenarios for also spending Bitcoin. And as I said, after more time will be passing, it should start making even more sense to spend too, not just hodl.

Thanks,NeuroticFish. Can you tell me what your name stands for? Wink
this-a good question.
What this fits into a definition of Neuroticfish, quite classic.

Quote
Neuroticfish is a German musical project whose styles are borrowed from electronic body music, futurepop, and synthpop, as well as other types of electronic music. It has released music on the Dancing Ferret Discs record label.

This is the one. It's a band I enjoy listening for decades.
Plus the fact that I was born under the sign of Pisces.
