We need to stop calling our daughtercoin "nodecoin" TODAY and call it something COOL.  Coolcoin.  Unicorncoin.  Rainbowcoin.  GoldNuggets.  Charitycoin.  Greencoin.  GermanShepardCoin.  CollieCoin.  IceCreamBar.  RainForestCoin.  SOMETHING.  COOL.  NOT.  TECHNO.

Think POPULARITY and COMMUNITY.

I agree, there are different points of view, but it seems to me that there are many, many ideas thrown around in this community and finishing of the stuff is going slowly. This is why CIYAM left the thread, man just doesn't have time for endless discussions and CFB lately made couple of times comments how there is no that much time for discussions that he needs to speed up implementation. Don't get me wrong, ideas are essential but we need balance between ideas and work/ finishing, releasing things.

I couldn't agree more.
But I think this has to do with the fact that we discuss *every single detail* here in this thread.
We don't need to, we don't have to.

Consensus on that level is harmful, not beneficial *at all*.

I have no idea where this idea that consensus is needed even for the layout of an application is needed for.
That kind of consensus is reached by the market. You take some opinions, or even use your own judgement, implement and then see what the market/user does.

Sometimes right is right. If I *know* I need to post something on my blog (because I actually have the experience) I don't go ask here in the thread if it's OK. Chances are almost 100% that some people would disagree. Chances are also good that some of those people have never written a post in their life, so they are not even qualified to comment with any degree of accuracy. If I then would start to doubt myself, I'd get nothing done.

This doesn't mean that experts need to take over, but it does mean that experts should do what they do best: make the calls about the topics where they are best to do so.

623  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 13, 2014, 11:03:00 AM
Again, this is all irrelevant if it never reaches mainstream.

It will just crash and burn.

You guys really need to focus on reaching the average user, not just the computer super nerds.

It will be great technology only if the mainstream adopts it.

Otherwise, we have another fail tech that could have, would have, but didn't.

I think no one is actually saying we should go mainstream without these.
I have also not seen anyone mentioning that Nxt be confined to "nerds"

However: do you seriously expect mainstream functionality in four months, when most of the developers have only seen the full code starting january and now the full code in March?

All your points can be answered in the affirmative. Yes, we are still groping towards a goal. Yes, we don't have everything in place. Yes, we cannot expect the average user to use Nxt at this moment.

Even with all this, we seem to reach opposite conclusions. You that Nxt is doomed and lagging and will fail. I that Nxt is young, in development and full of potential, whatéver the competition does.

With the same information that you had access to, and not being a "geek" or "nerd" or a coder, I never saw Nxt as a "coin", but as a "system". Otherwise I would never even have stepped in. I find coins boring, and not something I would invest in.

I can seriously see your point, and cannot argue against your personal conclusions from your apparent perspective. That doesn't mean that your perspective it the only one. I sincerely dislike being painted like some idiot that múst be wrong because he doesn't share your conclusions, and some other people probably do, too.

It is very possible to have access to the exact same facts and reach completely different conclusions.
624  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 13, 2014, 08:45:31 AM
I fully understand you, but I also believe that knowledge should be rewarded. People are not working for free, at least not the successful ones.
I am still not 100% sure if I should give away this knowledge for free or wait for some BUG-Bounty program to come up?

Asking for something that hasn't been seen and getting paid for it only works if you have a large trust rating.
No one in their right minds in any business would ever give money up front without either some form of surety or a sample of the goods.

The fact that you have apparently been in business with people who actually take things on complete trust says nothing about how business should be conducted, but only something about the fact that your previous business partners are apparently risk takers who will at some point will get severely burned.

There is a place for risk in business, but some form of collateral is standard practice.

In short: I have no idea why you get snippy at the fact that people would demand to see proof. The trust issue in this case is reversed: this community already has proven to reward and appreciate people uncovering weaknesses.

Edit: yes, I need to catch up with reading the thread. Wink

Can someone send me TestNxt: 11446113085114330181

Thanks!

so we will hire Fatih87SK then

If he is up to it, great. Smiley

Damelon,

What we're they supposed to deliver?

Can you write down what you want? Maybe some examples.
Then I can tell you guys if I can deliver what they supposed to do.

Hey Fatih,

What they were supposed to do was something like this: http://www.slideshare.net/GrahamRobertson/how-to-write-a-brand-plan

So: not the áctual promo material and brandéd material, but the underlying brand itself.

The slideshow gives a pretty good impressing of what a brand actually is.
A brand represents the "vision" and strategy for Nxt and includes, but is not limited to the visuals.
That's why I made that questionnaire. I still have them and think they can be of use.
I also still think we need a "branding" as it will force us to define at least á vision instead of the "all over the place" approach we have now. Smiley

By the way, they called me tonight and at least will give us a business card and their plan for a landing page.
Apparently they feel bad, too, mainly towards me. So when I get these, we might still be able to use it.

627  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 10, 2014, 03:34:21 PM
I bring forward a motion for Jean-Luc to modify the NRS client to check string length of the passphrase and reject it if less than 15 characters AND it has zero transactions. (dont want to lock out any people that do have NXT with a 15 char password)

Here's my new logic for my client http://nxtra.org/nxt-client (to be available later today, not yet uploaded)

Thoughts?

Thoughts: Implement this ASAP, and sort out the wallet.dat discussion later.

Do not get sidetracked into that discussion and then wait Smiley

It may not be *perfect* but it's WAY better than what we have.

WARNING !!!!!

I have stopped looking at NXT and you should consider the same.
It seems to be possible to generate NXT out of thin air  Huh

Take a look at this account: http://87.230.14.1/nxt/nxt.cgi?action=3000&acc=1739068987193023818
He sends around millions of NXT that he does not have. No problem doing this, because his account balance is able to become negative without any restriction.

If I would hold NXT i would feel betrayed.

Funny for those who know, for those who don't: That is the ID of the genesis account. No, NXT cannot and will not be created out of thin air.  Tongue

Also, to make it absolutely clear: this account cannot send out "anti-Nxt", in case you are wondering. Accounts with a negative balance cannot send.

Thanks for highlighting this. I am not here to flame NXT of course. I like the innovation, and met a few NXTcoin representatives in Berlin recently, and also know of some upcoming development plans. I have always kept my NXTcoins in DGEX since I first bought them, but since DGEX removed the NXT fees, I decided to move them into a local client. Explained at the bottom is why I used an 8 character password.

I'm just here to say 1 thing; security is a huge issue with cryptocurrencies and I understand that, and take necessary precautions to protect my funds. I'm not a developer designer or anything, but I consider myself a rather tech-savvy person that could navigate around websites, software, and hardware without reading a manual. But this is the first time I've ever used a login process which only requires a password and acts also as a username.

On hindsight, I am surprised the client does not automatically prevent you from using a non secure password. If a website requires a secure password, they implement several restrictions to help their users save themselves in case they are careless. As much as this version of the client is a "beta" version, I am still disappointed that the system allows users to make such a simple error, knowing very well that creating an account and sending NXT into any account w <20 chars password will get hacked immediately.

Like I said, security is #1 priority in crypto. I just find it amusing that the client has such a big loophole to leave users vulnerable.

Hello,

I REALLY appreciate you even posting here. I don't know if I would have taken the time for that, had I taken such a loss. Over 400,000 Nxt is a big number!

To me that shows real commitment and character, and I want to thank you for that.

There is still much to be done and we all hope and work that this will be done soon. It is a real pity that people like you have to go through this...

Conference is looking good, though:

Is our speaker completely confirmed, Damelon?

I've sent the stand billing to Salsacz, but how many more passes do we need?

Looking into RaspPi building, Ebereon will help, but is AFK for the next 10 days or so.

Need to get promo material. Do we recycle stuff from Berlin and Texas or make our own?

If Damelons camera dude can get press accreditation, we can get him in on a media pass for free.
I could also try to get an extra media pass by engaging evil, sneaky mode.

I'm off back to INF.....

chanc3r is confirmed, yes.
He took days off work for this.

Do we already have a speaker spot, or is he there as technical question guy for now? If he has to speak, we need to know on what. Wink

I don't know about others, so can't comment on passes, except to say that if we add others we must have passes.

Good that Ebereon will help. So that means we have a RaspPi. Let's get that confirmed as soon as he is back.

Can you take care of the press accreditation? Or do we need to do something else. Just give me the word if you need anything from me or him.

Update on the branding:

- I have been terribly frustrated this week, because the people I asked didn't deliver
- Today, I decided to call them again and give them a last chance to come up with something to actually show and use.
- The agreement I have with them now is that I decide if it's good enough to form a basis to continue work, or to stop.
- If I think it's good enough, I will show it here. If it is not, i will inform you here.

I find it very frustrating to work with people who don't deliver and am quite angry right now.

This weekend we wíll have an answer to this and I sincerely hope it will work out.
If not, my commitment stands, and I will continue in a different way to work on this, as it ís important!

 Angry

Well, two days since this post ánd their promise to deliver and ZILCH.

Tomorrow, I am going to call them and tell them I am cancelling this and to express my disappointment with their attitude.

I will also compile the questionnaires that you all have sent in, so at least that work won't be for nothing.
I still think we need resources like this, so will be thinking on how to get these. If anyone has any ideas on that, the field is once again wide open.

I am ashamed that this has come to nothing and am truly sorry for the fact that this has fallen through.

Pretty good, thank you. And you?

Hey, Emule. Want to jump in? Just a chit chat, no Nxt talk Smiley

I'm good, having a quiet evening in, watching a movie, relaxing before the start of the week...

Yeah, Emule, pull up a virtual chair! Let's get to know each other.  Smiley

Guys, relax!

Password generator will get implemented in Wesleyh's installer (NRS + nice GUI). And now, move on.

Please read this monster thread before you post Wink

Thank you.

But of course, if you have nothing better to do, just go on with the discussion Roll Eyes

We can also start our own conversation.
It'll be like a pub!

How've you been, Paul? Wink
636  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 09, 2014, 09:31:14 PM
He has 2100 followers...

https://i.imgur.com/fud4JGC.jpg

We know that a weak password is the user's responsibility, but it's also true that the current base client is not user friendly in that sense, at all. Regardless, in this case, contacting @onemanatatime, finding the related blockchain information and trying to perhaps partially or fully compensate the leeching would be a VERY smart PR move.

Edit: I just saw the amounts. 400K+. I'm sorry for him, but buying and transferring that amount without doing your homework is beyond reckless.

I agree his actions are beyond reckless, but HIS ACTIONS ARE KILLING NXT.  When one guy loses 20% of his portfolio on NXT due to poor password security and tweets it out to *** 2100 *** followers, WE JUST LOST 2100 PEOPLE WHO WON'T TOUCH NXT NOW.

THIS IS A DISASTER.

WE COULD HAVE AVOIDED THIS DISASTER  IF WE HAD IMPLEMENTED INTEGRATED AUTOMATIC STRONG PASSWORD GENERATION IN ALL CLIENTS A MONTH AGO.

ARE WE IN AGREEMENT TO IMPLEMENT IT ACROSS THE BOARD NOW?

Actually, I just looked at his account and he is very open about using a short and unsafe pass.
He isn't attacking Nxt at all and acknowledges he wasn't smart to do it.

I don't see it as a major PR problem. The reactions he gets are good, too. Most of his followers are traders themselves who had losses, too.

I'm not saying I think we shouldn't care, but he did this himself and knows it was stupid. If people want to help him, that's cool.

And we should get it sorted, but that will be done.

I didn't checked yet. For sure I bought two. In worst scenario, I will own 4 Cheesy.

Why 4?

NSFW http://s6.pikabu.ru/images/big_size_comm/2014-02_3/13923014986204.png

Cheesy

After Asset Exchange launch, what will be #1 example I could buy there? Coins, I know. Shares of some startup firm?

What?
Half an hour and no one made a "firm startup" joke?

I'm appalled!

(I'm taking the night off of being serious, so it's allowed)

up of talented people who can get things done.

If you want to buy into Emule's playing on your fears, you can. He's very good at that, and a skilled thermometer of where the communities' fears are: that we actually have jack shit, that we will fail, that all your investments will be worthless, that we will be taken down by hoarders, that we will be left standing out in the cold and laughed at.

These are all fears, and people like him are extremely skillful at playing on that. As said: feel free to agree with him. All things he says MAY come to pass. Let's be honest about that. MAY!

Great job on getting that investor involved Damelon! This is what we need.

But why do you lump the concerns of the community together with a troll? As far as I can see noone really pays attention to Emule. The concerns we have come from rational analysis of the situation and Emule tends to just echo it.
I don't think it's fair to the NXTers to claim that they are brainwashed or scared into something by this troll that noone even responds to anymore.

I get your point, but it's not what I meant.
I tend to use him as a skilled thermometer for our (also mine) fears.
It's his strength.
I don't want to imply people are just echoing hím. He echoes ús!

As you say: he is the echo, but the fears are real. I also think that, on balance, they are well-founded.

The things wé (in here, specifically) are afraid of, are enlarged by a complete focus on something other people couldn't care less about.

I disagree that this is totally rational. There is a big amount of frustration and fear mixed in, which skews our view to a decidedly negative side.
That doesn't mean that things are hunky-dory, but it does mean that it's not completely shit.

The fact that someone with no knowledge of these issues, but who looks at what we have, doesn't care.

And yes, he knows about testing, problems etc. because you always need to be completely candid about what you have.

Hope that clear it up.
639  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 09, 2014, 07:08:48 PM
Dear people,

In the light of all doubts and frustration, I want to give a view from the other side.

Today, I had a follow-up meeting with the co-owner of the following projects, which I have already posted before:

https://trackprotect.com
http://www.soundframework.com/
http://www.rhosmovement.com/

I was introduced to this person a few days ago and he we had some exploratory talks.

In today's talks, we discovered that what Nxt provides with its framework is exactly what he wants from a digital asset system.

Talks are going well, and all involved are satisfied.

This investor does NOT care about the technical side: he has people for that.
He does NOT care to explain to his users how the software works, just THAT it works.
He also does NOT care about the doubt of others: he cares about what hé sees as the potential.

We are four months old. We have an amazing potential: not just as a "coin", bit as a group of talented people who can get things done.

MAY!

I, however, am bolstered once more by a real investor, with a project worth millions of euros and five years of development and a working system, who after only two days and talks with me and some other big Nxt people (developers ánd stakeholder) and who already runs a business, and who thinks what we have is both promising and useful and wants to use it!

I choose to go with that, and also keep in mind that we are young and still very much a developing system.

We have people testing and developing, and that comes with delays and changes of plan when things don't work out the way we thought they would.
NOTHING ever does!

We will be having another talk on Wednesday. I will keep you up to date.
640  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 08, 2014, 10:31:49 PM
Since there's no username/password combination, a hacker does not need to target an account to crack it. They can set up a cracker to log into http://localhost:7875/ and start with A, then AA, Then AAA and so on. They can run this cycle continuously. If your password is halfway decent maybe it takes them a couple of years to break it, but since you can't change your secret phrase you are a sitting duck. You can send to a new account once in a while but you lose your "coin age" and have to wait 1440 blocks to forge again every time you do this.

I typed in 'password" and instantly gained access to an account that had a couple hundred NXT there at one point. Who's  NXT indeed.

I did some checking on such claims a few days ago for this thread: https://nextcoin.org/index.php/topic,4290.msg40035.html#msg40035

For the "password" account it's the same. You can see they moved the money in and immediately out.
The only other Nxt in there was from the faucet. It was NEVER a serious account!

Most weak password accounts, and you can check, are from december, when this issue wasn't known that well, or were faucet thiefs.

I really would like people to not only state facts, but also interpret them.
