621  Other / Meta / Re: A letter to the members of Bitcointalk forum... from a member... on: April 17, 2015, 03:45:13 PM
Another campaign, DaDice, is having users are wear the same, entire-avatar, avatar which is kind of annoying I can imagine.

That's not entirely true, the DaDice avatar design competition is still ongoing and there will be the option of having partial dadice avatars as you can see here:  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=973949.msg11092737#msg11092737

Add-ons (To be worn added to the current Avatar)
5% Avatar bonus over total pay excluding any bonus every week.

I chose to have a full avatar, if it does become a major issue (which I doubt) I'd be more than happy to have just a partial or non dadice avatar.

I hope our set of Avatars and add ons is less intrusive that most out there. Smiley

Are these the official avatars now?

Well, yeah. If you wear it, you are in.

The contest is going on, so the avatars will come only after the winners are declared. Smiley

ok no worries, I'd like to start your avatar campaign if possible (just changed my avatar to a dadice version Wink)
thanks

623  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How would you introduce Bitcoin to your friends and family? on: April 17, 2015, 02:51:56 PM
Well, title say all to be honest. How would you introduce them to Bitcoin? Let's say they don't exactly have the technical know-how. I've been with Bitcoin for a while, but still don't understand it fully either, so this will help me as well along the way.
Thank you

It's a tough question, I think the best way is to keep it simple and not use too much technical jargon. I struggled in the past to explain it to non-tech friends (some of them hadn't even heard of a ledger before), in the end I just emailed them a few links to some bitcoin videos on Youtube.
624  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: US Presidential Candidate Rand Paul to Appear at Bitcoin Event on: April 17, 2015, 02:41:56 PM
Not a massive fan of Rand Paul but I appreciate the legitimacy (and good PR) it gives bitcoin by him attending the event.

His stance on the war on drugs should also be applauded, not many politicians these days tell it like it is. Interesting times if he does become the next president Wink
625  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: "Better than bitcoin" altcoin sellers arrested for stealing $340 million on: April 16, 2015, 12:25:55 PM
340Million  Shocked i haven't even heard about this coin. People should realize that its not easy to get rich fast and stop losing there money in these scams.

Problem is greed blinds people, that's how scammers like this keep pulling the same stunts over and over again. The positive part of the story is that it will hopefully deter more scams like this in the future.
626  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Which Bitcoin Exchange do you use and why ? on: April 16, 2015, 12:06:33 PM
for alcoin, i use bittrex(really fast and it work good for me, i like fast exchange) and poloniex(also really fast, their new front is awesome, was not very good in the past but now is a very attractive exchange and the dev is working hard every day)

for bitcoin/altcoin cryptsy is ok but too slow for me, the only good thing is their huge volume

for bitcoin only, i use kraken, which i find the best exchange, altough the deposit is a bit slow(6 confs) they use basically no fee and and their sepa is super fast

I used to like cryptsy back in the day before it slowed down to a snails pace, gave up exchanging there due to frustration (way too many delayed deposits and frozen buy/sell orders).

BTCe suits most of my needs now - hardly dabble with alts anymore so there's no need for me to try any other exchanges. I heard good reviews about kraken so I'll to check it out at some point.

628  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What Do You Think of Hillary's Campaign Logo? on: April 15, 2015, 07:57:57 PM
The 'H' is very bold and prominent, my guess is that it's meant to represent strength/confidence

I'm wondering whether the arrow pointing to the right is symbol for more rightwing policies...

Overall not that impressed with it though it's still better than this:

629  Other / Meta / Re: Suggestion: Disable new user registration, Invites only on: April 15, 2015, 07:44:46 PM
Think it would send out the wrong message, we want to encourage new members to the forum not make it into some exclusive geek fest.

Determined people would still be able to abuse the invite-only system so I can't see how it would deter scammer/spammers etc
630  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Where to sell Bitcoins on: April 14, 2015, 12:04:56 PM
Hi guys.

I've been buying bitcoins bit by bit and eventually when the price rises up again I'd like to sell some of them.
Is there an exchange that is trusted kinda like MT.Gox where I can just put them into when I want to cash a few of them out for fiat?

I'm buying off of localbitcoins at the moment however when I am eventually ready to sell a few I won't have any 'trust' to sell them.

If someone could help me out it'd be appreciated.

Cheers,
Merve.

You could always sell small amounts on localbitcoins so you gradually build up feedback. The alternative is to trade with some trusted members on here (use an escrow!) or sign up to some of the other exchanges (bare in mind you will need to get verified to cash out to fiat).

PS: Avoid Paypal Wink
631  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: is this the end of bitcoin? on: April 14, 2015, 11:55:32 AM
OP , by that same logic you could say many US companies went bankrupt , is this the end of the dollar?

Only time will tell, I've heard lots of terrorists and criminals use dollars so I'm a bit reluctant to carry round any fiat in case I get arrested and put on a watchlist.

@OP Fear not my pessimistic friend, the moon cometh....

Unbelievable, shows the true mindset of intelligence agencies: WE WANT ALL YOUR DATA NOW!!

The more they push this agenda, the more companies are (hopefully) going to develop, and encourage their customers to use, encryption.

There is no respect for privacy. The argument 'if you have nothing to hide you shouldn't worry' is quite bad. Just because you want to hunt down terrorists doesn't mean that you should have access to all my private stuff. Just imagine the private conversations, documents and pictures (!) that people keep on a phone.
There are things that are meant for just 1 person to see.

The next person who says to me 'if you have nothing to hide....' is going to get a punch in the face lol

I don't buy any of their terrorist scaremongering, which is all it is. Can't remember a single time when a ISIS member got caught updating their Facebook profile, it just doesn't happen. Glad I spent all of my childhood without mobile phones and social media.

634  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Could obsolete ASICs become expensive antiques one day? on: April 12, 2015, 09:55:38 AM
I don't see why not, can imagine seeing all sorts of mining hardware in a museum one day. Going to be a few years til they're considered antiques though, I've got a small collection of unused usb miners that might be worth a bit in a few decades (collectors always pay a premium for mint goods).

If you are married, this is an impossibilty Smiley

Best bet is to buy a small island (assuming you had the money), that way you would have no worries about violating local/national laws etc, you could do what the hell you like.

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2015/03/envoy-car-mosque-destroyed-war-150318072200714.html

Quote
Almost all of the 436 mosques in the Central African Republic have been destroyed by months of vicious fighting between Christians and Muslims, the US ambassador to the United Nations said.
Samantha Power spoke to reporters on Tuesday after a Security Council visit last week to the country, calling the devastation "kind of crazy, chilling".

Quote
417 of the country's mosques have been destroyed. She visited the one remaining Muslim neighbourhood in the capital, Bangui, and described the residents as "a terrified population". Some Muslim women, afraid of leaving the community while wearing their veils, are choosing to give birth in their homes instead of hospitals.

I hope there are Christians here ready to denounce their religion for such widespread violence....

Slighty off-topic but relevant, I'd think we'd be better off we destroyed all forms of religion then we wouldn't have so many excuses for violence.

637  Other / Politics & Society / Re: cop shoots man in the back on: April 11, 2015, 09:43:57 AM
cop's saying the guy took his taser and shot him with it, evidence still looks pretty daming either way

I'm sure the cop would say anything to cover his ass, shooting that guy running away in the back is one of the most cowardly things I've ever seen. There's no way the cop could have felt threatened it that situation, at very most he could have fired just a warning shot.

The worst part is if the bystander didn't come forward with the video, this cop would have gotten away with murder. He was only charged because video showed his version of the events to be fabricated.

Body cams. Every cop, no exceptions.

Exactly, cop cams should be compulsory. Ideally all video recorded would be stored and monitored by a trusted third party, maybe even a non-profit organisation (wouldn't put it past the cops to delete vital evidence if it suited them). They would also has to pass laws preventing police from covering their cameras, I've seen plenty of cops at protests covering their ID numbers so they can't get reported for beating up activists.
638  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Paypal wants to accept BTC now?? on: April 11, 2015, 09:04:56 AM
Well they keep talking the talk, if they do end up accepting btc maybe they'll return the $1000's stolen from me by their chargeback system Wink

I wont be holding my breath....
639  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Africa May Leapfrog Traditional Banking on: April 11, 2015, 08:33:26 AM
Africa needs to leapfrog a way to grow enough food eat instead of having 30 countries supplement their diets. While they're at it maybe they can figure out how to grow some birth control so they won't need so much food. Bitcoin would be great for them to store their fifteen cents of disposible income per month.

Africa already grows enough food according to the World Bank:  http://www.theguardian.com/world/2012/oct/29/africa-can-feed-itself

Quote
In a new report, "Africa Can Help Feed Africa", the World Bank looks at how the continent can prevent food shortages and unlock its massive agricultural potential. The general recommendations might be predictable for the institution known for its support of neoliberal policy, but they offer key recommendations to achieving food sustainability. The report looks at how opening up cross-border trade will increase Africa's potential food production, increase food security by improving access to food, and raise returns for small-scale farmers.

Quote
It begins with the basic premise that regions have natural food surpluses in certain staples and deficits in others; the key is to maximise output and get the food to where it's needed. Attempts at national self-sufficiency haven't worked and the effects of climate change will only make production more volatile, says the report. "Removing barriers to regional trade presents benefits to farmers, consumers and governments." Farmers will make more money from meeting the rising demand; consumers get cheaper access to food and benefits such as jobs from a growing agricultural sector; governments can better deal with food security.

640  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why would DPR hire a Hitman through a bank transfer? on: April 10, 2015, 03:17:33 PM
I very much doubt he tried to hire any hitman, it's more than likely part of a character assassination by the feds to make sure he's locked up for a long time (and sends a powerful message to any future wanabee DPR's).

Guess we'll never know the truth unless he gets released from prison.
