6301  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: "CVE-2021-31876 Defect in Bitcoin Core's bip125 logic" on: July 25, 2021, 01:53:12 PM
Can anyone explain to me what this means and how this effects the client and how critical this vulnerability is?

The money is safe.

This only affects certain RBF transactions, which most people most probably don't do. From what I understand a transaction marked as replaceable may not always actually be replaceable (in the client) although it should be.
6302  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Unintentional plagiarism on: July 25, 2021, 01:28:14 PM
Personally, I don't believe in anything called unintentional plagiarism.

There's one case that comes into my mind: people telling "I've read somewhere that <this> and <that>".
Is that (unintentional) plagiarism or not? Is the source important if only the general idea is passed?
I'd say that there's no general answer for this and it depends...

So I'd go by the same statement as said just before me:

Its case to case basis actually.
6303  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Options to Purchase Bitcoin in the U.S. and transfer to a wallet on: July 25, 2021, 01:14:31 PM
I successfully purchased Bitcoin in Coinbase Pro and sent it to my Electrum cold wallet.
Thanks to o_e_l_e_o's #6 post, it only cost 0.5% instead of 2%.
If someone else wants to do this, you should be aware that Coinbase blocks you from sending Bitcoin for at least a week.
I was blocked even though my Settings show that I had: 1) verified my ID, 2) been verified to "Send and receive cryptocurrency" and that "Send cryptocurrency" was "Enabled".
I was able to perform the "Withdraw>BTC>Crypto Address" action, and it looked like it had succeeded. But a few minutes later, I got an email from Coinbase stating "Your transfer was canceled". The message said unhelpfully that the transfer "… has been canceled for the following reason: You are currently unable to send Bitcoin. Please contact support."
Contacting support turned out to be difficult, but I eventually got this answer: "Your account is temporarily suspended from sending cryptocurrency off the Coinbase platform - this is to protect against loss, because once funds are sent off our platform, we have no way to reverse those transactions."

Thank you for the feedback, this should be of use for others too from US.

This is especially great because you've done it right:
* did some research/asked around first
* had the patience to discuss with support (instead of crying "this is a scam")
* withdrew to own wallet (instead of keeping the funds in others' hands)
* came back to tell us

6305  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Krux DIY Hardware Wallet on: July 25, 2021, 12:54:21 PM
In my experience, those requirements don't work well together. I've spent a lot of time creating and signing a transaction offline, and ran into several problems (wrong version of Electrum and later a fee of less than 1 sat/byte). It took a while to get it all right, and considering how little I do this, I already forgot which Live CD eventually worked.

I've done that successfully for a short while before moving to the convenience of a proper HW.
After writing the latest Tails OS onto the USB stick it's all good, no need to look for "what was the CD"? Or at least for me that was it all.

I do have spare netbooks though, but they're old (1GB) and slow, and I never set them up for offline usage.

Smiley and here comes the difference. While I do have plenty of spare USB sticks, I literally have no old laptop for this. My oldest laptop (12 years old) got a RAM update and was used lately by my kids even for online school.

(until they enter their seed words on a phishing site).

LOL!
Those who don't read the very basics do deserve their fate though...

Until they come with their own data connection. Prepaid data isn't that expensive anymore, and could be worth it in a targeted attack. People have already been sent fake hardware wallets by post.

I've read about the fake ledgers on bitcointalk. I don't think though that general purpose development devices like this worth such an attack, since the vast majority will not be used as HW.

It's fun as hobby, but creating your own Jade (Blockstream's hardware wallet) is more practical. Jade also use similar hardware (on price and physical size), but the source code available for free and thoughtfully tested.

Imho the more the variety to choose from, the better. I expect Jade be less easy to buy than this M5StickV in some countries.
6306  Other / Meta / Re: Is Bitcointalk.org losing user base? on: July 25, 2021, 12:41:01 PM
Bitcoin community moved from bitcoin talk to Reddit, then Twitter and now is looking for a new platform.

Then I guess that I've done it wrong?  Tongue
I started with Reddit, although it was /r/dogecoin (where I was disappinted by their algo to bury older topics). Then I came to Bitcointalk and I'm still here.
I do check twitter when I'm bored, but not much, since I find it more a place for shilling and shouting than discussing ideas; so I can't really say that Twitter has a chance to "get me".
6307  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Will the IRS deem Bitcoin a currency if more companies accept it? on: July 25, 2021, 12:23:03 PM
the increased demand from many people will force them to adopt more legislation and move forward, the first of which will be the acceptance of ETF and then we may see a change in the tax mood but I do not expect it to be recognized as a currency.

ETF is no longer wow and the laws related to usage of crypto by common people may not be much related to ETF (companies), hence I am rather afraid to hope too much yet in that area.
Bitcoin recognized as currency in US would be a very big step. I think that they'll delay it for now, since the implications are... big. And far beyond US.

So (back to OP), we will probably still see it as commodity for a while...
6308  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ukraine's roadmap of crypto adoption on: July 25, 2021, 12:18:49 PM
There are detailed time frames in the full report in Ukrainian.

Then this becomes interesting... Also the ideas that Ukrainian politicians own big amounts of crypto gives all this a better weight.
It worth keeping an eye on it then and see how it'll go. September 2021 is not that far away, so it's a (impressingly) rather tight schedule too. Wow.
6309  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin is key to the future of Twitter, Jack Dorsey says on: July 24, 2021, 02:01:08 PM
Jack Dorsey is simply pushing his main investments - Twitter and Bitcoin -, I see nothing odd here.
He believes in both hence he has his money in both.
He tells it loudly since it's in his own interest too.
Making them work together was just a new step in a direction that's basically expected.

It's clearly good news. But I would not just open a champagne because of that  Wink
6310  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Krux DIY Hardware Wallet on: July 24, 2021, 01:56:47 PM
Again: I'd trust a standard netbook with standard Linux distribution more, especially when kept offline. If USB cables can be used to access your computer, how long will it takes before "offline" devices come with their own hidden internet connection?

It's not even needed to have an old notebook. An USB stick with Tails OS and a few reboots actually can do all you need for pretty much all the safety you need and an easy to use cold storage.
But some do prefer the convenience of HW, some do prefer to use it together with their smartphone, ... and this kind of setup may be OK for them.

And those devices can have their own "hidden" internet only if they get connected through wires (which you should clearly not do) or you enter there your WiFi password (which would be even more stupid to do).
6311  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ukraine's roadmap of crypto adoption on: July 24, 2021, 01:45:37 PM
I'm sure that with the community's efforts, in regard to development of the area of virtual assets, Ukraine will not only be able to compete on the global crypto market, but also become the leading example for other countries.

I find this as a politician-type announcement that rises your hopes, but doesn't actually tell anything.
He doesn't tell what they want to do good, he doesn't tell what will be that leading thing they'll do, no time frame, nothing.
For now it would be safer to have no expectations at all from that announcement.
6312  Economy / Economics / Re: ECB starts 24 month digital euro project. on: July 24, 2021, 01:33:17 PM
It is my opinion that the UK left the EU not only because the citizens wanted it

Many were tricked into "wanting" that. Clearly US and Russia too wanted a weaker EU and they've got it.
Both EU and UK will have more troubles than benefits from this, although on the long term it may end up as UK back into EU as a proper member (not a special one like before) and maybe with metric system too (for easier transfer of goods). But it will be painful until that is reached and we may have also troubles with (at least) Northern Ireland in the process.
COVID and non-EU borders are already visible for the lack of cheap workers to harvest UK crops, I've just read today in the news...
6313  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Will the IRS deem Bitcoin a currency if more companies accept it? on: July 24, 2021, 01:26:10 PM
Tesla has accepted Bitcoin, and we note that some banks are talking that more customers want Bitcoin, so if many companies accept Bitcoin, will every purchase or sale be taxed?
I do not think that companies will be imposing such taxes on them, otherwise they will accept payments in cryptocurrencies, especially for small transactions.
Do you expect the IRS to adjust the way taxes are calculated if we see more predictions or classification of Bitcoin as a currency rather than a commodity?

From what I know Tesla was doing some accountancy tricks (handle like they'd buy crypto from you) to accept bitcoin payments, so you probably have to pay tax for the fiat gains there.

But as long as more and more companies accept crypto as payment (whether directly or through payment processors who give them fiat), I would expect FED/IRS come to their senses and see crypto as money. I don't know though if this will happen sooner or rather later. El Salvador (and others to come) should also leave FED/IRS out of possible schemes that deprives crypto from it rightful place in the economy.
6314  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's up with all the not-full blocks lately? on: July 24, 2021, 01:19:04 PM
Average fees are super low and even 1 sat/vbyte seems to get you in the next block a lot of times. The last block only had 48 transactions! Maybe I just haven't payed much attention in the past but this seems really low. Any ideas why transaction volume is so low?

Since a big chunk of transactions is made by traders, trading bots, arbitrage bots, ... and since the market was not appealing for some while, yes, the number of on-chain transactions is small.
The fact that the hash rate is recovering also means that the transactions are processed fast enough.
And the result is that lately the blocks are mined without being full with transactions (the mempool is also basically empty).

I guess that this situation won't last long, hence best is to take advantage of the low fees and consolidate your small inputs if needed.

Also, what's up with the "best change" thing I see on so many people's avatars?

BestChange is an aggregator containing many crypto exchanges with many means of payment. They have an active signature campaign here, meaning that they pay people to advertise them.

BestChange.com is a free Internet-service intended to help finding electronic currency exchange services with the best exchange rates. Please read more here: https://www.bestchange.com/about.html and https://www.bestchange.com/help.html
6315  Economy / Economics / Re: ECB starts 24 month digital euro project. on: July 24, 2021, 12:49:11 PM
If the ECB comes out with a proposal for a CBDC, then it has to be disseminated to 19 (or is it all 27?) member states, any one of which could veto it. They need to be sure they get it right or it'll never pass.

O, clearly. That was part of doing it good. But I have a feeling that's more than that.
But time will tell - whether they do any real step before or after the FED.
6316  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Krux DIY Hardware Wallet on: July 24, 2021, 12:42:43 PM
Since Ledger/Trezor is not available in certain countries or there could be trust issues there, with this kind of setup you should be basically risk free.
Are those two brands specifically prohibited in certain countries or are HW wallets in general prohibited?  If it's the latter, then owning this device--even though it's not officially a HW wallet--would be kind of risky, wouldn't it?  Also, I know this is straying from the topic, but what countries have banned HW wallets?

I think that it was about not being available (no way to buy it, no resellers, nothing), not straight banned.
There was a thread from a guy (iirc he was from Arabia somewhere) who had this issue and wanted a solution.

The problem is that a HW I would not buy from just anybody. It has to be the producer or a certified reseller.
On the other hand, this hind of hardware may be safe since you flash it yourself with the software you probably check first.

Judging by the address at the bottom of the page, these products are shipped out of China.

Indeed, AliExpress has its share of M5Stack sellers, so it's most probably from China.

>>>
And while it's not a HW per se, it's actually a development kit, like RasPi or Arduino, it seems to have all you need to build something with HW capabilities off it.
6317  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2021-07-22] JPMorgan Opens Crypto Trading To All Clients on: July 24, 2021, 12:32:23 PM
At least Dimon had the insight to admit he was wrong and the foresight to see what is coming next. People want access to bitcoin, and they will take their investments to whoever is willing to offer that to them. The institutions which refuse to change are the ones which will lose out.

However, I have no doubt that as time goes on Dimon will continue to be an enemy of bitcoin. He can see where things are going, and so he's changed his mind for his own profits. They will give you access to bitcoin, but only if you store it with them. They will lobby for more regulations to benefit themselves. They will continue to be anti-bitcoin and anti-decentralization. They just want their profits.

Clearly. Just the change of optics from such a company, such a pillar of the banking system, is imho a huge step forward in Bitcoin gaining legitimacy exactly between the old style banking dinosaurs. And if they want a share of the profits, they'll have to stop the idiotic rhetoric less and less people believe and start following the trend (i.e. join us and no longer fight us).

And I don't expect that the interaction between crypto world and banking system can go forward without more regulations/legislation. I don't know how good/bad will they be, some signals from EU are quite concerning for example, but well... we cannot simply expect that the old system will give up easily, right?

Doar ca ori nu stiu cum sa formuleze o idee calumea, ori ignoranta e prea mare...
https://www.coindesk.com/no-the-european-union-is-not-banning-anonymous-crypto-wallets

Oamenii astia habar n-au ce-i aia crypto.

Undecided
6319  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you accept hackers’ Bitcoin donations to charitable organizations? on: July 24, 2021, 12:11:22 PM
in other words, I personally would not accept some of the illegal proceeds of hackers for charity.

If one receives cash for charity, there's a huge chance that the money has drug traces on it.
With Bitcoin the problem is rather similar: hacked money can get to you, sooner or later, but, as already said, most probably it will be mixed first.
Expecting to get only "clean" coins is like expecting to use only freshly printed dollars in all your life.

Of course, if you receive directly hacked/stolen money, you'd better report it and let the authorities take over. They may have access to specialists and tools to actually do something (depending on the country of those authorities though)

You cannot block money to reach you, but you can use coin control and don't spend that input.

...when for about the same price I could buy a Trezor or Ledger?

Since Ledger/Trezor is not available in certain countries or there could be trust issues there, with this kind of setup you should be basically risk free.
Although indeed that warning is somewhat concerning... (I'm not sure what are the actual risks though if one did save the seed properly; are there any?!)
